A new year brings with it some great new shows on our local stages.

Theatre lights are burning across Southwest Florida, and box offices are waiting for you to call and reserve your seats before things sell out.

So, let’s begin our whirlwind journey to see what’s on stage in January.

TheatreZone in Naples brings us I Love My Wife Jan. 13 - 23 at the G & L Theatre. florida Repertory Theatre will keep us laughing with Morning After Grace on its main stage Jan. 7 - 26 in downtown Fort Myers.

In Cape Coral, Cultural Park Theater presents Nunsense 2: The Second Coming Jan. 13 - 26.

Singin’ in the Rain pays Dec. 31 through Feb. 12 at the Broadway Palm in Fort Myers.

Laboratory Theater of Florida will stage Killer Joe Jan. 14 through Feb. 5 at its downtown Fort Myers location.

Quartet (not a musical) is on stage at New Phoenix Theatre in Fort Myers Jan. 6 - 23.

The Charlotte Players open up the new year with Exit Laughing. It will play Jan. 6 - 16 at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte.

The Naples Players presents the Savannah Sipping Society in Backburn Hall Jan. 12 through Feb. 6.

At the Off Broadway Palm Theatre in Fort Myers, catch Over the River and Through the Woods Jan. 13 through March 5.

Driving Miss Daisy will be presented in Florida Rep’s ArtStage Studio Theatre Jan. 21 through Feb. 13.

Joey & Maria’s Comedy Wedding is now being staged in Bonita Springs and Naples starting in January.

Naples Artcrafters have their monthly show Jan. 8.

The Cape Coral Art Festival & Marketplace will be Jan. 8 and 9.

The Naples New Year’s Art Show is Jan. 8 and 9 on 5th Avenue South.

Bonita Springs Invitational Art Festival is Jan. 15 and 16 at the Promenade at Bonita Bay. The Center for the Art Bonita Springs will hold its annual Bonita Springs National Art Festival Jan. 15 and 16 at Riverside Park.

The Sanibel Invitational Art Festival will be held Jan. 21 and 22.

Art Festival at Mercato in Naples is scheduled for Jan. 29 and 30.

Hot Works will host its Estero Art Festival Jan. 29 ad 30 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.

Cape Coral Art League will host its 11th annual art fair Jan. 29 and 30.

ArtFest Fort Myers returns Feb. 5 and 6 in the River District.

Although it’s indoors, the Southwest Florida Wood Art Expo is Jan. 7 and 8 at the Charlotte Harbor Event Center in Punta Gorda.

Hilarious new comedy at Florida Rep Theatre

Florida Repertory Theatre’s 2021-2022 season continues with Morning After Grace by Carey Crim.

Morning After Grace follows retirees Angus and Abigail, who after hooking up at a funeral, find themselves wrapped in sheets and questioning their choices. Enter next-door neighbor Ollie, a former Detroit Tigers player who’s traded his mitt for golf clubs and a yoga mat, and all bets are off for a peaceful retirement. Nothing is as it seems with this trio, and every revelation brings new laughs!

Florida Rep ensemble member Chris Clavelli returns to Florida Rep after directing Ken Ludwig’s A Fox on the Fairway and A Doll’s House, Part 2 in the 2019-2020 season.

Clavelli is joined by an Marvin Bell expert creative team, including set designer Kim Powers (Florida Rep debut), costume designer Charlene Gross (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder), lighting designer Rob Siler (Alabaster), sound designer Adam Trummel (West Side Story), and ensemble stage manager Janine Wochna (The Woman in Black).

Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. for the opening night gala performance on Friday, Jan. 7.

Florida Rep's parking lot opens 2 hours before each performance and offers guests free parking across the street from the Arcade Theatre.

Nunsense 2 on stage

at Cultural Park Theater

Cultural Park Theater is thrilled that the original cast from our 2019 production of Nunsense is back again in Nunsense 2: The Second Coming.

Opening on Jan. 13 with performances through Jan. 23, this sequel takes place six weeks after the sisters have staged their first benefit.

The sisters are back presenting Joy Ursillo a "thankyou" show for all the people who supported them in the past. But now, they're a bit slicker, having been "bitten by the theater bug." Things get to off to a rousing start as the sisters sing “Nunsense, the Magic Word” but before long. chaos erupts. Two Franciscans come to claim Sister Mary Amnesia as one of their own.

At the same time, the nuns hear that a talent scout is in the audience to see them strut their stuff. From the riotous bingo game run by Sister Amnesia to the hilarious duet “What Would Elvis Do?” to the rousing finale “There's Only One Way to End Your Prayers and That's to Say Amen,” this show will have you rolling in the aisles!

Bingo Cards will be handed for patrons to participate in Sister Amnesia’s bingo game – who will win? You’ll have to play to find out. Tickets are on sale, and they’re selling fast, so reserve your seats soon.

Quartet at New Phoenix in Fort Myers Jan. 6 - 23

New Phoenix Theatre’s next show of the season is Quartet and will be on the Fort Myers stage Jan. 6 - 23.

Quartet is a beautiful and funny play, that is also very touching. The story takes place in a home for retired musicians. It focuses on three old friends: opera singers. Their peace is destroyed with the arrival of Jean, an old friend of theirs who worked successfully with them on a Quartet many years ago.

Charlotte Players comedy opens Jan. 6 at Langdon Playhouse

There’s a play whose title is a promise to its audience.

You’re guaranteed to exit the theater laughing after Exit Laughing, Charlotte Players’ January offing at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte.

In bridge, an exit card is strategically played by a person to give up the lead, knowing the opponents will win the trick. In life, making an exit could mean many things. Exit can also be a euphemism for death, along with demise, departure, passing, resting, etc.

Playwright Paul Elliott brought all this together in Exit Laughing, a play about death, bridge, and laughter. The story concerns Connie, Leona, and Millie, three southern ladies from Birmingham whose weekly highlight for 30 years was their bridge game with the “girls.” After one of their foursome, Mary, dies, they decide to continue the tradition.

At their first weekly card game since Mary’s “exit,” the slightly ditzy Millie decides to “borrow” Mary’s ashes from the funeral home and bring the urn to the game. What evolves is the wildest, most exciting night of their lives, involving a police raid, a stripper, and a whole new way of looking at all the fun you can have when you’re truly living.

Exit Laughing was a winner of the AACT New Play Fest, a national new play festival that takes place over a two-year period. At its premiere in Missouri, the play broke all records for a nonmusical in the Happenings Magazine

Springfield Little Theatre’s 50year history.

"This show was very well received by our audiences,” said a community theater reviewer in North Carolina.

“Audiences absolutely loved it,” enthused a reviewer in Iowa.

Elliott’s plays are produced all around the world. “Finding the Burnett Heart,” an awardwinning comedy-drama, made its Hollywood premiere following a successful run at the historic Detroit Repertory Theatre. Gentle Passage was the flagship production of the 2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival before winning Best Gay Play of 2014 at the Chicago Pride Film and Theatre Awards.

His musical Dula, written for international recording star Jeanie Cunningham, received a staged reading at Northwestern University before moving to a full workshop production in Atlantic City and becoming a TNT Pops!

Playwriting Competition winner, premiering at the OhLook Performing Arts Center in Texas.

Hamilton star joins Gulf Coast Symphony Jan. 15 at Mann Hall Best known for her role as Angelica Schuyler in the musical phenomenon Hamilton, Renee Elise Goldsberry will be appearing at the Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Saturday Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Renée’s performance in Hamilton earned her a Tony Award, Grammy Award, Drama Desk Award and Lucille Lortel Award. Renée Elise Goldsberry is a multi-hyphenate actress and singer who has delivered award winning performances both on Broadway and onscreen. Simon & Garfunkel, Sinatra concerts at TheatreZone

TheatreZone in Naples launches 2022 with three January productions: a 1970s satire of the sexual revolution, Simon & Garfunkel’s epic Central Park concert, and the world premiere of a little-known Frank Sinatra life event.

First up is I Love My Wife which plays Jan. 13 – Jan. 23. Praised by TheatreZone’s founder and artistic director Mark Danni as “the most wildly funny show I have ever seen.” It is a hysterical satire of the sexual revolution of the 1970s.

The musical takes place on Christmas Eve in suburban Trenton, N.J., where two married couples contemplate a menage-a-quatre. The musicians are on stage as a Greek chorus, commenting on the action in multiple elaborate costumes for a truly innovative performance.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. from Jan. 13 through Jan. 23, and 2 p.m. on Jan. 16, 17, 22 and 23.

I Love My Wife plays Jan. 13 - 23.

The Feud was written by Dennis DelleFave, Roselli's cousin and road manager, in collaboration with TheatreZone's Mark Danni. Sinatra, 10 years Roselli’s senior, achieved success first, reputedly with mob backing, which Roselli refused, opting to represent himself at smaller nightclub venues. Roselli achieved great renown in the Italian American community. “The Feud’s got it all: the great Sinatra songbook, Italian songs that Roselli made famous, and much more from the ‘40s through the ‘70s,” said Mark Danni. The performance is staged at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29.

The cast of Joey & Marias Comedy Wedding will be running from Naples to Bonita and back again.

Gulfshore Playhouse breaks ground on Baker Theatre & Education Center in Naples

Gulfshore Playhouse officially celebrated groundbreaking on its long-anticipated state-of-the-art Baker Theatre and Education Center Dec. 1.

This celebration gathered vanguard donors, city officials, and other guests to kick off the next stage of the project with speeches and performances from Broadway star Lora Lee Gayer, Nick Duckart who currently stars in the national tour of Come From Away, and music director Michael Hicks.

The event, held on the Gulfshore Playhouse Baker Theatre and Education Center site, was attended by more than 300 people. Among those in attendance were city and county officials, including Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann, vice mayor Terry Hutchison, and county commissioner Andy Solís.

Additionally, lead project donors including Patty and Jay Baker, Glenda and Rich Struthers, Sandi and Tom Moran, Joanne and Karl Wyss, Susan Regenstein, John and Carol Walter, and Patty and George Kraus were in attendance.

The groundbreaking comes on the heels of the momentous achievement of raising over 90% of the building’s funding thus far.

Located at the corner of 1st Avenue South and Goodlette-Frank Road. at the gateway to downtown Naples, this new building will boast two performance venues, an educational wing, and a host of other spaces. The projected opening of the new Baker Theatre and Education Center is fall 2023.

It will feature an intimate 350-seat main stage with a Broadway-sized stage, a 125seat flexible studio theater, and Struthers Hall, a combination rehearsal and event space. Additionally, the theatre will include an education wing to house the theater’s robust and ever-growing educational programming.

Cape Coral Art Festival Jan. 8 - 9 The Cape Coral Art Festival & Market Place, presented by the Rotary Club of Cape Coral, has announced the list of artists and exhibitors taking part in the 37th annual event set for Jan. 8 and 9 on Cape Coral Parkway.

A strong lineup of juried artists and crafters from across the country will be joined by new and returning exhibitors.

While ‘Art on the Parkway’ will showcase the work of K-12 student art submissions across the county.

Two of the festival’s featured artists this year include Craig Dietrich of Oceans & Africa photography and Scott Macklin of Fantasy Jewelry. This year’s poster artist is Girard J. Moravcik of Colorful Creations By GJM. Moravcik is a full-time resident of Cape Coral and a part-time resident of Medina, Ohio. He is the father of two and grandfather of four. Moravcik has been in the printing industry for more than 40 years, specializing in color theory, and is the owner of a digital imaging company in Sharon Center Ohio supplying printers across the country. He has patents on special screening to bring vibrant photos to the dry-offset printing industry such as aerosol cans and plastic containers.

When the COVID pandemic started, Moravcik found himself confined at the house and decided to start creating tropical images from the photography and images he had purchased. He utilized artistic techniques, surrealistic techniques, specialized lighting and color retouching to create unique and extremely vivid

images with a unique depth of field. With his knowledge of color theory, he was able to combine massive amounts of pigmentation and print contrast on unique substrates to create unparalleled vibrancy. Moravcik’s goal is to create unique images that come to life with depth and extremely vivid color.

Dietrich served as a Naval photographer during the Gulf War where his thirst for adventure was born when he was given the opportunity to travel. After leaving the Navy, Dietrich became a scuba instructor and later put together his two great loves of photography and scuba by venturing into the world of underwater photography.

Recently Dietrich returned to his roots of topside photography and in 2020, after his first trip to Africa, introduced his "Safari Collection". Dietrich’s photography has won multiple awards and has been sold in upscale galleries from Carmel, California to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Collectors from around the globe are counted among Craig’s clientele, and each piece is presented in the unique medium of high-quality aluminum, creating unmatched vibrancy and mastery, making them a worthy addition to any collection. Craig lives in South Florida with his wife Julie.

Macklin is a professional artist who started his career in 1977. All of Macklin’s pieces are original designs that are hand sculpted in wax then centrifu-

gally cast using the lost wax method in either sterling silver, 14ct gold, or jewelers’ bronze. Once that is complete the custom piece is antiqued and then hand polished to show its beauty and detail.

David’s paintings are in many private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad.

In the month of January, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of various artists participating in the first invitational exhibition of the year, Pequeño Formato (small format). Annual fine art festival in Bonita Springs Jan. 15 & 16

The Center for Visual Arts in Bonita Springs will hold its first national art festival of the season in January.

The first of three Bonita Springs National Arts Festivals will be held Jan. 15 and 16 at Riverside Park, 10451 Old 41 Road in Bonita Springs.

Subsequent juried outdoor festivals will be held Feb. 12 and 13 and March 5 and 6.

The festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The art festivals are free, but a $5 donation is suggested.

Hot Works art show Jan. 29-30 at JetBlue

Hot Works 27th Estero Fine Art Show returns to JetBlue Park in Fort Myers on Jan. 29 & 30.

This boutique-style art shows features quality juried fine art and fine craft artists with all discipline for sale – paintings, clay, glass, sculpture, fiber, wood, jewelry and more. All artwork is original and personally handmade by the artist who is present at the show. There is something for everyone, in all price ranges.

A total of $1,500 in professional artist awards will be presented with criteria based on technique/execution, originality and booth appearance.

Institute for the Arts & Education is the associated 501c3 non-profit organization with focus on visual arts, cultural diversity, community enrichment and fostering art education among youth.

While at the show be sure to visit metal artist Ron Schmidt of Tequesta, Fla. Ron creates his work from ordinary steel cut nails as well as hand-painted lawn and plant sculptures made from brass and cop-

per. He uses a welding/cutting torch and brazing alloys such as nickel silver and silicone bronze in creating both of these types of sculptures. The pieces are then finished with a multiple step process utilizing fine glass beads, high air pressure and wire brushing. The finish is then protected by

several layers of a metal coating preservative that prohibits tarnish or corrosion.

The result is a finish that is maintenance free.

As part of the commitment to bring art education into the community, Hot Works integrates a Youth Art Competition or Budding Artist Competition within the art shows. This unique and one-of-a-kind program encourages students for ages 5-13/9-19 or grades K-8/6-12 to enter his/her original art that is publicly displayed in the art show the entire weekend. On Sunday at 3 p.m., $250 Youth Art Awards wil be presented at the show as young artists are exposed to the rules and entrepreneurship of doing art shows for a living. Each youth art winner also receives the same, two-foot long colorful gorgeous ribbon that the professional artists receive.

Event hours are Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Great food from local area restaurants and music add to the ambiance of this beautiful show.

Lucid exhibit at Cape Coral Art Center features 8 FGCU alumni

The Cape Coral art Center will host the Lucid exhibit Jan. 7 – 27 with a gallery reception set for Friday, Jan. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Lucid is a contemporary exhibition concentrating on the complexities of the subconscious mind. During a lucid dream, the brain becomes aware that it has entered a dream-like realm, allowing the dreamer to feel everything as if it were reality.

Those who have achieved this state of mind can either replicate astonishing fantasies or be trapped in a waking nightmare. This phenomenon has kept dreamers in a constant state of suspense, never truly knowing what they will experience when the lights are off.

Created through the collaborative efforts of eight FGCU alumni, these artists celebrate the freedom of exploring their imagination and the intrusive thoughts that run wild throughout.

Participating artists include Farrah Alkhadra, Jessa Barone, Meg Brunner, Joshua Coe, Brennon Huseman, Maddy Huseman, Marcela

Pulgarin and Michael Santacroce A dizzying eccentricity permeates through each artist’s work, generating daring creations reflecting the subliminal mind. Through a vast array of mediums ranging from two-dimensional and threedimensional practices, the artists stray from the traditional and create works that are innovative, perplexing, and thrilling.

This exhibit invites the artists to explore distorted realities and warped perspectives that transport the viewer into the deep folds of the human psyche. Each piece delves further into the very fabric of different dreamscapes, creating new expressive worlds for the viewer to fathom. At times jubilant and others distressing, Lucid encompasses the full spectrum of the subconscious mind and perpetuates the question: When we all fall asleep where do we go?”

Husband, wife collaborate as art gallery owners, printers & framers in Cape Coral ART

Lorne's Gallery is situated at The Westin and next door to Pinchers Crab Shack at Tarpon Point Marina.

Gallery owners Barbara and Lorne Hosack have spent most of their lives producing and selling coastal art. This family operation located at Tarpon Point Marina is an extension of their imagination.

Aside from being extremely interesting to pass through and look at all the sundries at Lorne's Gallery the view of all the wonderful boats and restaurants is something that looks like it should be in Naples. If you spend five minutes sauntering through the 3,000 square-foot gallery, you won't have seen it all. There's so much to see. With over 500 pictures stacked here in there and over 20,000 images in print exclusive to Lorne's Gallery and their other gallery, Frame Gallery and Gifts, there's too much to comprehend.

Additionally, the galleries offer high end printing. They have thousands of images that are exclusive to them. “That means that we own the originals, we own the printing rights, and we do the printing ourselves,” says Lorne. “The newest process is called giclee printing. After scanning the original and color correcting it in the computer, we are able to change the size and color of anything that they print. And then after printing, they are the framers we frame small we frame big and we frame with our customers in mind. We are picky with our art and with the framing process.”

He adds, “For example, we do small things, we do big things, we do the hard jobs that most people shutter about doing; we make it easy.

Barbara is excellent at color matching. She can find the right color blend of mats to produce a wonderful extension of the artwork that you want framed.”

Lorne says, “One of our favorite pieces of art that we do is our local charts. These charts are nautical charts that we put artwork on. … It's not just a map, it's a piece of art then we print and frame this wonderful piece of art. The end result is something that is informative because you can show your guests where the names are of all the places you want to go and it still decorative.”

The main gallery, that's been located on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral for over 30 years, is across from Wal-mart and approximately 5,000 square feet. For those customers who have a hard time deciding what image they will like in their home, they offer something called a 24 hour check out. This allows the buyer to take a framed piece of art home or several and look at that them in their own environment. This really helps an individual find the perfect piece for their home.

Naples Art Studios ready for new year of exhibits

Naples Art Studios provides a unique artistic experience uniting three gallery spaces which showcases the working studios of several resident artists including artist/owners Richard W. Rosen, sculptor, and Tracy Magen Rosen, painter/mixed media.

Artistically, Richard Rosen finds inspiration in the works of Calder, Hofmann, Kandinsky and Miro. His artwork combines sculpture and painting and, in the case of wall pieces, woodworking as well. Rosen’s varied life experiences are reflected in this art. His travels, the people he’s met and world events help form the themes in his work. Rosen’s hand-built clay and mixed media constructions are affected by his observations. His work evolves intuitively and is inspired by shapes, textures and colors in nature and in man-made forms.

In 2006, Richard W. Rosen founded what is known today as the Naples Art District. Art Alive events are held the first Wednesdays and third

Saturdays monthly from November through April at galleries and studios throughout the Naples Art District.

Rauschenberg, Pottorf exhibits at Davis Art Center

Two exclusive exhibitions will be on display in January at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center.

A Darryl Pottorf solo exhibition will be featured in the Grand Atrium. Featured in the Capital Gallery on the second floor, is the collaboration exhibition Quattro Mani by Darryl Pottorf & Robert Rauschenberg. The opening night reception takes place during Art Walk on Friday, Jan. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The solo exhibition of Darryl Pottorf will be a representation of 30 years of his work.

Demonstrating an overview of the world through his eyes, the many colorful artworks combine, enmesh, and collage symbols, photographs, and imagery. Each piece possesses its own narrative. Pottorf will also feature his iconic Money Series and September 11th series as well as his Links series.

Collaborating with Rauschenberg was an easy transition for Darryl Pottorf.

The two were in Venice, Italy, at a Venetian evening celebrating Art for the World, its sponsor, Adelina von Furstenberg, suggested a RauschenbergPottorf collaboration. By coincidence, two pianists began playing on the villa’s grand piano. “Quattro mani” someone announced. “Quattro Happenings Magazine

mani, four hands,” Pottorf translated. He turned to Rauschenberg. “That’s us!”

And the idea was born: to make art as partners, looking at the same scenes, Bob photographing in color, Darryl in black and white, then combining the two in one piece.

Returning to Captiva, they began their collaboration.

They created four large paintings for the Cloister of San Lazzaro, an Armenian monastery in Venice, which were exhibited at the next Biennale, such as Quattro Mani I (1996.) These pieces captured the historical and contemporary spirit of the city.

These four-handed paintings won the highest award given by the Venetian mayor’s office.

Sidney Felsen of Gemini G.E.L., the famed studio of master printers in Los Angeles, came to the Biennale, and saw the Quattro Mani works at San Lazzaro. Fascinated by their depth and complexity, he invited the artists to create a Quattro Mani edition in his city, featuring Los Angeles from two merged perspectives.

Both shows will be on display through Friday, Jan. 28.

Lesley Morrow at ACT Gallery Arts for ACT Gallery will feature Lesley Morrow in January. An opening reception will be held Friday, Jan. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. during the monthly Fort Myers art Walk.

Lesley Morrow is an artist whose paintings are bold, raw and sensitive to the eye. She expresses the feminine experience, and the mystique through contemporary portraiture that has included both celebrity and iconic women. Capturing not only the strength, she sees in these women and their faces but also the chaos behind the façade as she sets a mood. Through the body of her work, you can see a roadmap, almost a narrative, of the pieces of her psyche in such a way as to find her own core strength.

Lesley Morrow’s art is a door to a world of colors where the blues and purples accentuate the images of her subjects. Many of these, cre-

ated under the detailed inspiration of her psyche, act as guides and partners on our journey - one that they

live, feel and breathe. Witnessing her work, automatically one feels as if you are becoming part of the portraits she creates. These are similar to the faces of familiar people in our lives.

Her color palette provides the perfect balance of strong and weaker hues, creating a state of contemplation, forcing us to be part of the subject’s history, brought to life by the power of the artist’s mind. With her creativity and skilled hand, she produces beauty, thought, strength, wisdom and over all, the power of portraying the human spirit.

Lesley is an artist in residence at the Union Artist Studios in Fort Myers, where she now breathes her passion through acrylic, oil, airbrush and mixed media. She has exhibited in many SW Florida galleries.

Art exhibits returning to Cape Coral Library The Cape Coral Library art gallery, which had been closed for nearly two years, has now reopened. The gallery will again feature bimonthly exhibitions by local artists and is sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. The library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace, and the current exhibition may be viewed during their regular business hours Jan. 5 through Feb. 27.

Norman Cannon’s photographs will be exhibited on all the walls of the gallery. His subject matter is varied, and he operates on the premise if it looks good shoot it – and shoot it again. Photo-shopping is not in his vocabulary, since he believes nature should be captured in its ultimate reality.

Cannon has been jury-selected for multiple arts and crafts festivals and has been a featured artist at the Harbor View

Tom Higgins’ brightly colored boats made from repurposed wood will be on display in the large case in the gallery.

The inspiration for the salvage ships came from a simple driftwood wall hanging he saw on the Internet. He took the concept and created his own designs using discarded wood from construction sites and adding recycled or little-used items and found objects. He utilizes items resembling working parts of ships such as rubber washers for life preservers and grommets as portholes.

Higgins is a self-taught artist who has worked in a wide variety of mediums over the past 50 years.

Stardust Memories Big Band starts new season

with Bonita, Naples shows

The Stardust Memories Big Band has returned for its eighth season, performing outdoor, evening concerts in Cambier Park in Naples and Riverside Park in Bonita Springs.

The band plays the music of the legendary American big bands including Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Doc Severinsen, and many more.

The 2022 outdoor series consists of five different theme-based shows, each of which is performed at Cambier Park (Monday nights), and at Riverside Park (Tuesday nights).

A total of ten performances are planned: “Big Band Classics” will be performed Jan. 24 & 25 “Sinatra” – featuring Walt Andrus is the program for Feb. 7 and 15 “Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey” will be featured on Feb. 21 and 22 “The Andrew Sisters and Glenn Miller” will be performed March 21 and 22 “The Gene Krupa Story” featuring Arthor von Happenings Magazine

The Center for the Arts Bonita Springs has four concerts planned for January at Hinman Auditorium.

Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Matt Schofield will perform Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Schofield is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and innovative British Blues artists Matt Schofield - Jan. 15 of his generation. He has been rated in the top ten British Blues Guitarists of all time by Guitar & Bass Magazine, alongside legends Eric Clapton and Peter Green.

Bridging the gulf between rock n’ roll and classical music, Gulf Coast Symphony performs The Music of Led Zeppelin at the Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. Amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by singer Randy Jackson’s screaming vocals, creator Brent Havens guest conducts the ensemble as they capture Led Zeppelin’s “sheer blast and power,” riff for riff while churning out new musical colors.

“My concept for The Music of Led Zeppelin was to take the music as close to the originals as we could and then add some colors to enhance what Zep had done,” says Havens. “The wonderful thing with an orchestra is that you have an entire palette to call upon. The band is reproducing what Led Zeppelin did on the albums, verbatim, and then having an orchestra behind the band gives the music a richness, a whole different feel, a whole different sense of power.”

Delivering a note-for-note interpretation, vocalist Randy Jackson (lead singer of the rock band Zebra), shrieks brilliantly, acting as a window between the audience and reworked material. “The music itself is one thing, but Jackson more than captures the spirit of legendary Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant,” says Havens.

Why the music of Led Zeppelin? Havens felt Led Zeppelin’s intricate rhythm patterns and unusual progressions contained within straight-forward rock n’ roll makes them an ideal choice for scoring.

“I was quite impressed with the complexity of the rhythms,” says Havens. “I’ve asked myself if they actually sat down and said, ‘alright we Happenings Magazine

need a three-eight bar here, or we need to go from fourfour to seven-eight and back…’ I don’t think so. I think they just banged it out and it worked and it felt good.”

The two-plus hour concert features 18 Zeppelin tunes, including “Stairway to Heaven,” “Heartbreaker,” “Black Dog” and “Immigrant Song.”

“On Immigrant Song I have the violins doing that ‘Ah-ahah part,’ up an octave from Jackson, and the French horns are doing it with him in the same register,” says Havens. “Then we have the brass kickin’ in the back, doing the accents. It rips.”

The symphonic rock hybrid has met with approval on both sides of the podium.

“When we first came on stage, the audience gave us polite, almost classical applause,” says Havens.

“Then we hit the first note and they realized it was a rock show.”

Classical musicians also enjoy the change of pace; “In one concert, during “Stairway to Heaven,” the entire string section pulled out Bic lighters,” laughs Havens.

The Gulf Coast Symphony programming continues in January at the Music and Arts Community Center in Fort Myers.

The Gulf Coast Chamber Orchestra welcomes in 2022 with a concert Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. featuring some of the most powerful compositional voices of America of today and yesteryear. The program includes Peter Boyer’s Silver Fanfare (2004), James Lee III’s Sukkot Through Orion’s Nebula (2011), Gabriela Lena Frank’s Three Latin American Dances (2003), Adolph Hailstork Epitaph to a Man Who Dreamed (1979), and William Grant Still’s “AfroAmerican” Symphony No. 1 (1930).

At the heart of the Gulf Coast Jazz Collective’s mission is to present new music that you won’t hear anywhere else in Southwest Florida. For the Jan. 13 concert, the Gulf Coast Jazz Collective, (who are all top jazz musicians and composers in their own right), is joined by two sought-after jazz composers and performers. Gold Entertainment and Paradise Coast Sports Complex present Air Supply in an outdoor concert at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex Stadium in Naples on Saturday, March 26.

Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. Charlotte Chorale welcomes Steinway artist Tianshu Wang The Charlotte Chorale will host a special concert event “Enchanting Music at Twilight” performed by internationally acclaimed pianist Dr. Tianshu Wang.

Recognized as a “superbly talented pianist,” Steinway artist Tianshu Wang has graced the concert stages of Europe, Asia and North America, including a solo performance in Carnegie Hall. She will appear on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in Punta Gorda.

Tianshu's program will feature some of the most beloved masterworks by Mozart, Chopin, Liszt,

Originally from Birmingham, Ala., Banditos is a group – more like a gang, actually – of five 30-somethings, nowadays operating out of Nashville, close to, and simultaneously very far away from, the gleaming towers and industry hustle of Lower Broad and Music Row. From backwoods bluegrass, to slinky nods to Muscle Shoals soul and unexpected bits of doo-wop sweetness, the Banditos recall many, but sound like no one but themselves.

The City of Fort Myers invites you to “don your tartan” and bring your family and friends out to enjoy the Annual Caloosahatchee Celtic Festival in downtown Fort Myers.

The weekend festivities include: FRIDAY, JAN. 21 - First up is the Kick-Off Party at Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers at 5 p.m. with performances by Albannach, The Screaming Orphans, and Seven Nations.

Admission is only $5 in advance, $7 at gate.

SATURDAY, JAN. 22 - The gates at Centennial Park will open at 11 a.m. with many hours of non-stop Celtic music from Albannach, The Screaming Orphans, Seven Nations, The Byrne Brothers, West of Galway and the Kellyn Celtic Arts Irish Dancers.

Reading Festival returns March 5

More than 20 acclaimed and bestselling authors are coming to Fort Myers to showcase their books and meet fans at the 23rd annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival will be held on the downtown Fort Myers Regional Library campus located at 2450 First St. The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is a free, all-ages, annual outdoor event. Fans have the opportunity to listen to and meet a diverse line-up of bestselling authors, participate in contests and activities and find the latest and greatest in books and technology. In addition to author appearances and autograph sessions, there will be food truck vendors, storytelling programs, arts and crafts, youth writing contests and a free book for every child and teenager.

The lineup of award-winning authors scheduled to attend the next festival includes adult authors Alafair Burke, Tim Dorsey, J.A. Jance, Nathaniel Philbrick, Kate Quinn and Brad Taylor, among oth-

ers. Some of the youth and teen authors include Adrianna Cuevas, Stacy McAnulty, Jenna Evans Welch, Alex Willan and Adrienne Young. “We are so excited to be able to introduce a new, mobile app for the festival this year,” said festival organizer Melissa Baker, manager of programming and community outreach for the Lee County Library System. “We encourage everyone to download the app to learn more about our fabulous authors and stay up to date about the event as it develops.”

In addition to the daylong community event, Lee County Library System will offer virtual components for festival participants to enjoy. Among the activities planned are virtual author presentations, an online book discussion, grab-and-go festival bingo and virtual reading and activity challenges through the READsquared app.

“However people choose to engage with our event, in-person or virtually, we hope they will find the Reading Festival to be a fun and memorable experience,” Lee County Library System director Mindi Simon said. “Having the opportunity to meet an author, learn about the writing process, and the story behind the stories is a centerpiece of our festival.”

Attendees who want more exclusive access to meet and mingle with this year’s festival authors can participate in An Evening with the Authors, a fundraising dinner scheduled to take place at the Edison Restaurant, Bar and Banquet Center on March 4. Carol sing nets food and funds for soup kitchen Beverly Cox sings “Deck the Halls”

Residents who attended the Christmas Carol Sing at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers Dec. 7 contributed plenty of food and funds to help The Soup Kitchen of Community Cooperative feed the hungry in Southwest Florida.

In excess of 1,300 pounds of non-perishable food along with $6,340 in cash contributions were collected at the 30th Annual Christmas Carol Sing, which was sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships “It is so gratifying to see our community coming together to help those less fortunate, especially during

these economic times. The need has never been greater,” said the Rev. Dr. Paul deJong of First Presbyterian Church.

About 1,000 people attended the two performances, which featured members of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Carol Sing was dedicated in memory of the late Sam Galloway, Jr., who founded the Christmas Carol Sing.

Community Cooperative is an innovative nonprofit organization made up of social service entrepreneurs fighting to end homelessness and hunger in the community.
