The Cake is served at The Naples Players studio theater

Legendary North Carolina baker Della (Linda Mizeur), finds herself in a true crisis of conscience and faith when her late best friend’s daughter, Jen (Emma Covert), asks her to make a wedding cake for her upcoming marriage…to another woman. From Feb. 2 – Feb. 27, The Cake by playwright Bekah Brunstetter, is in the Tobye Studio Theater at The Naples Players. Della’s life is turned upside down by this turn of events - she can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? Normally, she leaves judgment calls like this to her husband, Tim (Brad Brenner), but this time she has to think for herself. As if this wasn’t too much for baker Della to handle, Jen’s fiancee, Macy (Makayla Davis), furthers the cultural divide by avoiding gluten and sugar altogether and dismisses Della when she excitedly tells her she’s going to be on a baking show. Family and ideology collide in this touching play in which the main characters have to face their differences and work through them. There are no clear answers to life’s toughest questions, and this play invites audiences to join Della on a journey of curiosity and humanity. CEO and artistic director Bryce Alexander says, “The Cake gives audiences an opportunity to explore a very current ideological issue from multiple perspectives. This play is a true reflection of a real-life challenge that doesn’t have one simple answer. In this performance, and in life, what we can hope to gain is insight and empathy, which oftentimes gives more clarity and a deeper understanding than cutand-dry answers.” Directed by Christine Cirker, with stage management by Adam Garcia, costume design by Dayne Sabatos, lighting design by Abby May, scenic design by

Cultural Park Theater

feeling the love in February

By Joy Ursillo Cultural Park Theater begins February with the hilarious comedy, Play On – a play by Rick Abbott. Opening Feb. 3 and running through Feb. 13, this hilarious story is about a theater company desperately trying to produce a play, in spite of maddening interference from the haughty author Joy Ursillo who keeps revising the script. As the actors move from scene to scene, our final act is the performance of the actual play, where anything that can go wrong does! When the author decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theater during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax and a thoroughly hilarious romp. Even the sound effects reap their share of laughter. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m.. Johnny & Patti Russo We’re excited to bring Johnny and Patti Russo back to our concert stage with their Valentine’s Day Concert for Lovers and Others. Live on our stage for just one performance on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m., Johnny and Patti will perform lovethemed tunes as well as other favorites as they entertain. Tickets are $25. Call the box office today to reserve your seats. This duo is a favorite of our patrons and always draws a big crowd. Happenings Magazine

Volunteer Fair Our 2022 Volunteer Fair is being held Feb. 22, and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers to join our existing crew. Join us from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and find out where your special skills can be put to good use for us.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Rounding out the month, we open The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Feb. 24. This classic production follows an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents as they vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made up) words, hoping to never hear the soulcrushing, pout-inducing, lifeunaffirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box! Performances run through March 6, with shows Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Cultural Park Theater strongly suggests that all staff, volunteers and patrons wear a mask when inside our building. Social distancing is still being practiced and we continue to take temps of anyone entering our facility. The Cultural Park Theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral. Call the box office for more information at 239772-5862. Joy Ursillo is executive director of the Cultural Park Theatre Company.

THEATRE

Driving Miss Daisy at Florida Repertory Theatre through Feb. 13

Florida Repertory Theatre’s season continues with Alfred Uhry’s modern classic Driving Miss Daisy. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a timeless story about the power of friendship and the endurance of human connection. Driving Miss Daisy runs in the ArtStage Studio Theatre now through Feb. 13. “This classic story chronicles a decades-long friendship, and is a love-letter to how affirming a strong friendship can be in our lives,” said artistic director Greg Longenhagen. “It is the perfect piece to kick off the new year in the ArtStage Studio Theatre. The production brings a dream-team of our ensemble members and recent guest artists, and you won’t want to miss it. This season was meant to celebrate stories that lift us up and bring us together, and there isn’t a play that does those things better.” Driving Miss Daisy tells a hopeful, funny, and heartfelt story that explores the transformative power of friendship. What begins as a clash of wills between a stubborn Jewish matriarch and a proud black man evolves into a generation-long friendship as the two navigate Civil Rights-era Atlanta. The play premiered at Playwrights Horizons in 1987 8 - FEBRUARY 2022

starring Dana Ivey and Morgan Freeman, and went on to win the Pulitzer for Drama. The now-classic film adaptation starring Jessica Tandy alongside Freeman took home the Best Picture Oscar in 1990. Recent London and Broadway revivals have starred James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave, and Angela Lansbury in the groundbreaking roles of Daisy and Hoke. Florida Rep’s production stars ensemble member Sara Morsey as Daisy, guest artist Mujahid Abdul-Rashid as Hoke, and ensemble member Jason Parrish as Daisy’s son,

Boolie. Morsey returns to the stage after playing a string of iconic women in Florida Rep's The Glass Menagerie, August: Osage County, The Little Foxes, Dividing the Estate and Steel Magnolias – as well as originating the role of Bib the Goat in the National New Play Network Rolling world premiere of Alabaster in 2020. Abdul-Rashid returns to Florida Rep after his acclaimed performance as Troy Maxson in Florida Rep’s production of August Wilson’s Fences. No stranger to August Wilson’s work, Abdul-Rashid’s career includes multiple appearances in six of Wilson’s American Century Cycle plays all over the country. Associate artistic director and frequent director Jason Parrish returns to the stage in Driving Miss Daisy for the first time since appearing in Cabaret and How the Other Half Loves in 2018, and is also wellknown for his work in six seasons of the snarky holiday comedy The Santaland Diaries. Tickets start at $59 for regular performances and $39 for discounted previews, and are available online at www.FloridaRep.org and through the box office at 239332-4488. Happenings Magazine

Avenue Q

at Laboratory Theater

The Southwest Florida premiere of Avenue Q by Jeff Whitty, Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx opens at The Laboratory Theater of Florida on Feb. 25 and plays through March 27. Winner of the 2004 “Triple Crown” of Tonys for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical and featuring puppets and human actors, this is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the story of recent college graduate Princeton as he struggles to find his purpose. Though inspired by Sesame Street, these are R-Rated puppets with warnings for adult language and situations. Director Carmen Crussard says, ”If Avenue Q were a book, it would be called Adulting for Dummies. It grapples with some very real and serious issues, like sex, racism, money, and the discovery that hey, maybe I'm not as important as my younger self thought I was. But presenting all that through puppets makes it all a little more palatable. I think this show is hilarious because we see so much of ourselves in these characters. Sure, we all deal with all kinds of problems as adults, but as long as we can still laugh at ourselves, I think we will all be okay, even if we still haven't found our purpose.” The cast features Steven Michael Kennedy (Princeton), Ruthgena Faraco (Kate Monster), Robert Barner (Gary Happenings Magazine

Music direction by Earl Sparrow. This play contains adult language and discussions on sexual situations, drinking, and internet pornography. It is recommended for ages 13 and older. Bright Star on stage at TheatreZone Feb. 10 - 20 TheatreZone in Naples is in full swing in February with three engaging productions that each have deep roots in musical history and the powerful talents of renowned musicians. Bright Star, with a Tony-nominated score and lyrics by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, is inspired by a true story set in the mountains of Asheville, N.C., and involves a disappearing infant. The musical is inspired by Martin’s and Brickell’s Grammy-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album Love Has Come for You and the folk story of the “Iron Mountain Baby.” The plot re-tells the “Iron Mountain Baby” legend and creates a new sequence of events that reimagines the ending. Bright Star will be on stage at Feb. 10 – 20. The story involves the meeting of literary editor Alice Murphy and a young soldier just home from World War II. He awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. The musical received critical acclaim from its Broadway performances and a national tour. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote, "The shining achievement of the musical is its winsome country and bluegrass score. The complicated plot is divided between two love stories that turn out to have an

unusual connection. The songs are yearning ballads and square-dance romps rich with fiddle, piano and banjo.” USA Today noted that the 2016 Broadway production “holds its own in what may well prove to be the richest Broadway season in decades.” Cast members include Kimberly Doreen Burns as Alice Murphy, Robert

Koutras as Jimmy Ray Dobbs, Jim Ballard as Mayor Dobbs, Rachael Lord as Margo and Quinn Corcoran as Billy. Others in the cast are Brent Kuenning, Adolpho Blaire, Laura Wittenberger, Brittany Halen, Brooke Rosenbluth, Robbie Rescigno, Paulette Oliva and Peter McClung. Mark Danni, founding artistic director of TheatreZone, comments, “Audiences will be treated to extraordinary music with Martin’s banjo wizardry reflected in the score. They will be carried through an emotional roller coaster of calamity and comedy before arriving at a happy ending.” Bright Star tickets are available for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 through Feb. 12, and Feb. 17 through Feb. 20. Matinees are staged at 2 p.m. on Feb. 12, 13, 19 and 20. TheatreZone follows up Bright Star with two February concerts, The Mersey Beatles - Favorites of Naples (Feb. 22) and Mack is Back: The Music of Bobby Darin (Feb. 24). TheatreZone tickets range from $50 to $65 depending on selected seats, with premium seats available at $85. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.Theatre.Zone or call 888-9663352 x1. DAAS Co-op features ART

art of Ilya Stolyar DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of Russian artist Ilya Stolyar in the month of February. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display through Feb. 27. Stolyar was born in a small town by the Baltic Sea called Kaliningrad which, prior to World War II belonged to Germany and was known as

Koenigsberg. The artist moved to the United States in 2001, spending the last seven in Southwest Florida. “I’ve changed a lot of addresses in 21 years of living in United States. I have done different types of work, while studying a variety of different subjects,” comments Stolyar, who spent 15 years living in New Jersey before moving to the sunshine state. “I also have met a lot of different people. All of those experiences shaped

me into the person I am right now.” The definition of Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. As well as the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance. Stolyar’s definition of art is a bit different. “I create for the sake of living, for the sake of selfexploitation and an internal conversation with God,” says the artist. Over the last 20 years, Stolyar has explored a lot of mediums and techniques, some self-taught. His earlier 24 - FEBRUARY 2022

pieces started with dark colors, and self-conscious subjects affected by depression. Overtime, the artist has learned more about himself, as well as cultures, beliefs and traditions of others. “My work progressed into bright and vibrant colors, with open minded concepts, and filled with love.” – concludes the artist. DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the venue and how to become a member can be found online at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645. Diana Ripoll ART

Valentine reception Feb. 10 on Sanibel Island

at Hirdie Girdie Gallery

26 - FEBRUARY 2022

Hirdie Girdie Gallery invites everyone to a Valentine wine and chocolates reception on Feb. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m., in participation with Tower Gallery and Suncatchers’ Dream. The gallery’s February guest artist Diana Ripoll will be in attendance to discuss her art techniques and inspiration. Diana Ripoll is a mixed media acrylic and resin painter who relies on optimism, experimentation, and intuition to create her work. She was born with a natural fascination with brilliant color and abstract ideas. Her world travels have contributed to a mental reservoir of snapshots and experiences that her subconscious mind draws upon to create her paintings. Diana rarely paints with a subject in mind, but instead chooses a color that excites her at the moment, then continues to add colors, and watch them flow, mix, and move. The painting begins to paint itself. She stands back, discovers what is hidden, and consciously brings it out. Only when the work is completed does she find the true meaning of the piece and what inspired it. With each completed piece Diana looks forward to revisiting the story it tells. Diana’s goal is to constantly improve her skills and set a lighter tone in a tough world through color, and often humor, for herself and viewers of her paintings. Diana considers it a great privilege to paint and be heard above this noisy world without speaking. Hirdie Girdie Gallery is located at 2490 Library Way on Sanibel. A UNIQUE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE UNITING 3 GALLERY SPACES WHICH SURROUND THE WORKING STUDIOS OF RESIDENT ARTISTS

Make Neenie’s House your next event space

Wanna throw a party, but don’t want to mess up your house? Neenie’s is the place for you. An Art Emporium, Neenie’s House in the East Palm Neighborhood of Fort Myers, has evolved into the – everyone’s saying it - coolest event space in town. A few years ago, Janeen Vanko, the retired steel sales woman from Chicago, bought a vacated old Florida cottage. Her vision was to make the neighborhood the new bohemian funky town, by creating art and music events. Neenie needs help. Calling all event planners. Calling all citizens … rent this space. There’s nothing too outrageous. Neenie’s has had drag shows, fashion shows, karaoke parties, girls’ nights out, and a quinceanera.

The outdoor Peace Plaza would be the perfect spot for plant shows, kid parties, or band practice. And the inside, more intimate space, which has housed storytelling, and artist spotlights, would be a great space for poetry readings, or a jazz night club act. So how bout it? There’s plenty of seating, a dance floor, gazebo stage, a standup bar and refrigerators. The Christmas lights stay on all year. And the moon and stars rise right over the peace sign dance floor. So make Neenie’s House your house for the day or night. Neenie’s House is located at 481 Marsh Ave., just of Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers. Three exhibits at Davis Art Center

celebrate women

Three thought-provoking, educational and celebratory exhibits by women and about women using quilts, mixed media and paint will be featured at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center Feb. 4 – 23. The “Women Take Issue” exhibit features the work of Patricia Anderson Turner, Fran Gardner and Beau Wild. In the conservatory; Her Story and the Our Story collections, will be featured showcasing two nationally traveling quilt collections that illustrate strong women throughout history, curated by Susanne Miller Jones. Featured in the Capital Gallery on the second floor will be highlights from the “Female Spirit” exhibit featuring Linda Hoffmeister and Katty Smith. The opening night receptions take

place during Art Walk on Friday, Feb. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. Adding to the female talent that evening, Sheena Brook will be performing live music at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden from 7 to 10 p.m. The shows will be on display through Friday, Feb. 23. Like women around the nation and across the globe, Patricia Anderson Turner of Charlotte Harbor woke up four years ago to a reality that women’s voices were not being heard. Determined to change that, an idea began to form to find a platform where women could speak loudly and be heard clearly. Using art as this voice, Turner called on her friends, female artists of all media from many locations, to make pieces that express their concerns, their pride, and their history. From each of their studios in multiple states from Florida to Ohio, the artists accepted Turner’s challenge to explore the slippery landscape of American politics, own-

Social injustice and the economic and political structures that perpetuate oppression, racism in America, the refugee crisis and the current global political environment, are all issues that have been subjects in Travis Somerville’s work. He often uses stereotypical and confrontational racial imagery for its nostalgic familiarity, asking the viewer to confront their internal feelings about racism and class struggle. Somerville grew up in the Southern United States in the tumultuous 1960's and 70's surrounded by the Southern gentility that harbored underlying racism and hostility. These social dualities, contradictions and hypocrisies are exposed in his work paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations.

Live entertainment will be provided by headliner Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers, and The Porch Dogs will perform. This singer/songwriter and accordionist has performed all over the world since debuting his band, Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, at age 19. The knowledge of Dwayne’s musical ability along with Zydeco Hellraisers band members are combined to have over 100 years of experience playing Zydeco music and it shows in every performance. His first fulltime gig as a musician was an extended engagement in Orlando, Florida, at a piano bar called Blazing Pianos.

Happenings Magazine

In January of 1999, Michael received an offer that would unknowingly change his life: an opportunity to play Las Vegas at the famed New York, New York Hotel and Casino. It was there that Billy Joel spotted Michael and joined him on stage one fateful night of February 2001. It only took two songs before Billy was convinced that he had found his new Piano Man: Michael Cavanaugh. Michael closed up shop at New York, New York and moved to New York City to work alongside Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp to shape the Broadway Musical that would be called Movin’ Out. In the lead role, he received both Tony and Grammy nominations. “We are so excited to bring “Michael Cavanaugh to Fort Myers. Among those she has performed/recorded with are Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Victor Wooten, Tommy Emmanuel and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. Her obvious joy of music, humor and her facility across the genres of folk, classical, bluegrass, popular and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. An

engaging performer, Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, a Spanish classic. Muriel’s multimedia show takes you on a journey in music and stories, with a backdrop of visuals artfully projected behind her. It is a musical journey through space and around the world. Truly an experience of all the senses, her show often incorporates aspects of her new project Acoustic Chef with visuals by celebrated photo-artist Bryan Allen. Her new TrueFire channel brings her in-demand teaching to a wider audience. Ray Cerbone will open for Muriel Anderson. The Feb. 20 concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Lipbone incorporates American Roots,

Blues and Jazz with world influences including Indian, Middle Eastern, African and Latin styles. An uncanny vocal range, a nylon string guitar, a wooden spoon duct-taped to his foot and a lifetime of stories are all he needs to get the party started. His natural human sounds of throat singing, bass and beat-boxing, and his astonishingly realistic lip-tromboning are a must-experience. Ralph Leesburg will open the show for Lipbone Redding. Tickets for the Feb. 26 concert are $20. For more details, visit online at www.americanacma.org

Air Supply in Naples March 26

Gold Entertainment and Paradise Coast Sports Complex present Air Supply in an outdoor concert at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex Stadium in Naples on Saturday, March 26. “We are excited to work with the new management team (The Sports Facilities Company) to bring this major concert to Naples and SW Florida,” remarks Jay Goldberg, president of Gold Entertainment. The concert will be presented in the new sports stadium. “The set-up for this concert will be amazing, with reserved seating for everyone, a major concert stage, sound & lighting and large video screens on each side of the stage for everyone’s enjoyment. I can’t imagine a better setting for an outdoor concert under the stars,” adds Goldberg. Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, "Love and Other Bruises" and "If You Knew Me" and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style.

Happenings Magazine

Clive Davis signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980, "Lost in Love" became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Now Air Supply was on their way. The second single was "All Out of Love," and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles' run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. "Lost in Love" was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies. All seats for this outdoor concert are reserved. Ticket prices begin at $49. Various seating locations and prices are available. All ages are welcome. Tickets are on sale online at www.playparadisecoast.com, www.goldentertainment.us or call TicketSearch at 888-483-8762. Doors open at 5 p.m., and show time is 7 p.m. Food and drinks will be available from the newly upgraded concessions. VIP viewing skyboxes and sponsorship opportunities are available. Annual Mrs Edison’s Hymn Sing on Feb. 8

Celebrate the Edison Festival of Light and help feed the hungry by attending Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at The First Presbyterian Church in downtown Fort Myers at the corner of Second and Lee streets. It’s the 32nd anniversary of the hymn sing, which is sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, two performances are planned at 1 and 7 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. Admission is free, but because of the increased need for food for the hungry, organizers are requesting that those who attend bring cans of non-perishable food and a voluntary cash donation, if possible, to benefit Sam’s Community Kitchen & Cafe of Community Cooperative. “We need to help The Soup Kitchen by donating as much canned goods and cash as we can to help families who most need it in our community,” said the Rev. Dr. Paul deJong of First Presbyterian Church. Community Cooperative is an innovative nonprofit organization made up of social service entrepreneurs fighting to end homelessness and hunger

in our community. It provides more than 22,000 meals each month through its Community Cafés, Meals on Wheels programs and school programs, distributes more than 750,000 pounds of groceries through its Mobile Food Pantries, and serves 9,000 individuals and families with homeless and comprehensive case management services through its Social & Education Resource Centers. Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sing was founded by the late Sam Galloway, Jr., who made feeding the hungry part of his life’s work and was one of the founders of Community Cooperative. Cash donations are especially needed because Community Cooperative can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores. This year’s event will feature the First Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir and many other singers, along with a piano-organ combination. For more information or directions to the church, call 334-2261 or visit www.fpcfortmyers.org. For more about Community Cooperative, call 239-332-SOUP or visit at communitycooperative.com.
