Music cruises return

Kathy (my wife) and I recently embarked on our first music cruise since the pandemic shut down the cruise industry. We sailed out of Fort Lauderdale for the annual Malt Shop Memories Cruise featuring Gladys Knight, Gary Puckett, Little Anthony, Jay and The Americans, Darlene Love and more (including some great tribute artists). This cruise was one of the first major themed charter cruises to safely set sail in the restart of the industry. Three cheers to the StarVista Live team who put it all together with Holland America Lines and their crew aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam. Fully vaccinated and double tested, about 1,500 music loving cruisers made it through the week without incident. It was wonderful to be back on a music cruise and to hear some fantastic songs from yesterday. As newbies on this particular cruise, the slightly more mature cruise mates made us feel right at home. A special highlight was when Gary Puckett was being interviewed by cruise host Jerry Blavat about his hitmaking past ... pause ... Gary gave a shout out to SW Florida’s Ben Allen as someone to watch. (They recently collaborated on a project.) Moving forward, the next Malt Shop Memories Cruise is now on sale to the general public. The Oct. 30 Nov. 6, 2022, sailing will include Dion, Frankie Avalon, Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, The Dixie Cups, Brooklyn Bridge and so many more. Now, this cruise sells out every year and fast. If you want to experience the music of the 50s and early 60s with the artists who made it great, buy your cabins now. Use promo code HAPPENINGS and you will save a few hundred bucks. (see page 62 for details)

And finally .... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our readers, advertisers and partners.

Celebrate holidays with Charlotte Players THEATRE

Charlotte Players gets you in the mood for a happy holiday with a family friendly Christmas play to begin December, then later in the month bids a musical adieu to 2021 with a New Year’s Eve celebration. Both events take place at the Langdon Playhouse, 1182 Market Circle, Port Charlotte. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever makes a return to the Langdon stage on Dec. 1, following a successful run in 2020. The hilarious holiday classic asks the question: What happens when a family of troubled and troublesome kids find their way in to the local Christmas pageant at church? “Both mayhem and fun collide as Grace Bradley struggles to do her best at directing the annual pageant,” said director Bill Olson, “while the local church elder, Mrs. Armstrong, in charge of all important events, is stuck in traction in the hospital. Of course, that doesn’t stop her from micromanaging everything from a telephone at her bedside.”

10 - DECEMBER 2021

Everyone is doubtful that the awful Herdman kids can do anything but make the pageant a complete disaster. To everyone’s surprise, though, the magic of the season and the power of Jesus’s birth create a miracle for all, and the misfit family of kids end up teaching the town the true meaning of Christmas. Based on the children’s book of the same name by Barbara Robinson and published in 1971, the play is being presented as an extension of the Players’ Kids Onstage program in collaboration with the standard productions in the Langdon. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” brings together a mixed cast of adult actors and child performers. Directed and designed by Olson with musical direction by Marti Koch, and costume designs by Jan Westin and Jean Howard, the charming holiday musical has five performances during the first week of December. Evenings at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 - 4 and a matinee at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for students and may be ordered at www.charlotteplayers.org or by calling 941-255-1022. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever started out as a short story, first published in McCall’s magazine. Robinson adapted her story into a book, which sold over 800,000 copies, then into a play. Charlotte Players invites you to ring in the New Year with some of Charlotte County’s talented singers and musicians. Share a champagne toast while enjoying a 90-minute concert style musical program. Designed and directed by the multi-talented Ken Crisp, this concert has something for everyone – a whole lot of old, some new, country, pop, Broadway hits and standards. There are performances at 6:30 and 9 p.m., featuring Crisp on piano and Bob Cook on drums accompanying vocalists Rachael Dalangauskas, Meegan DeYoung, Kelly O’Donnell, Debbie Brandal, Pam Seay, Valorie Holden, Randy Mennella, Kirk Roberts and Bill Depew. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for students. To order, visit www.charlotteplayers.org or call 941-255-1022.

A Live Radio Play starts month at Cultural Park

By Joy Ursillo Cultural Park Theater is proud to present It’s A Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Play opening Dec. 9 and playing through Dec. 19. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the beloved classic holiday movie with a clever twist Joy Ursillo thrown in: the story is staged as a live 1940's style radio broadcast, with the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the life and sound effects done live on stage through Foley artists. Before television, the largest popular form of entertainment was the radio. Families would have their dinner and then sit around the radio waiting to hear either the news or their favorite radio program. Radio shows were usually done by just a few actors playing multiple characters and there were people responsible for all of the live sounds created during the show. “Commercial Breaks” were done by the same actors that enacted the plays. It’s a Wonderful Life is about the life of George Bailey, a generous and wellmeaning man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. It will take help from a lovable angel to show George what life would be like if he wasn’t born for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Evening performances are Thursday and Happenings Magazine

Friday at 7 p.m., matinees are Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. Michael DʼAmore Joining us for one performance only, the amazing Michael D’Amore brings his Christmas show to Cultural Park Theater. Volunteer Fair Cultural Park Theater is hosting its 2021-2022 Volunteer Fair on Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Volunteer opportunities exist in areas like selling in our gift shop, ushering and hosting patrons in our lobby and serving refreshments from our concession counter. We also are looking for volunteers to train to assist in our lighting and sound booth, as well as to help with set design and construction. There are so many ways to volunteer at Cultural Park Theater - come on out to see us on Dec. 11 and see where you can make a difference in our community by volunteering! You'll be glad you did. Cultural Park Theater strongly suggests that all staff, volunteers and patrons wear a mask when inside our building. Artistic director Annette Trossbach says, “History has never been this fun. Or so very deliciously butchered! This roller-coaster ride will both entertain and educate as it travels through the ‘great experiment’ that is the United States.” “I love comedy. I don’t love history and politics. But poking fun at history and politics? That’s why I chose to direct this show. Our ability to laugh at ourselves and our history levels the playing field. It allows us to deal with the uncomfortable and challenging things we are facing today, even if it’s only for 90 minutes at a time,” says director Heather Johnson. ART

DAAS Co-Op Gallery

welcomes Dom-O-Nick

In the month of December, DAAS CoOp Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the artwork of Dom-O-Nick, aka The Glass Wizard. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition, also featuring the jewelry of Sandra Coyle, will be on display through Dec. 26. Dom-O-Nick has been restoring and repairing crystal and glass items ranging from everyday glassware to precious pieces of Waterford and Lladró figurines for many years. The pieces damaged beyond repair are used to create new, fascinating original works of broken-glass art. When creating a newly inspired piece of art, it is often necessary to break a sound piece of glass in order to obtain the proper color, shape or size. As Dom-O-Nick would tell you, “Each piece of glass I place on the canvas is equivalent to a single stroke of a brush.” He’ll also say that many times the glass “speaks” to him and guides its placement to reveal what it wants to become. The newly created art piece then lends itself gracefully to the pleasure of its viewer and to those lucky to own a special piece of his unique broken-glass art -- a lifetime of enjoyment. In this cheerful, holiday-inspired exhibit, Dom-O-Nick will showcase a select collection of his signature floral arrangements made from an assortment of colorful pieces of broken glass. The appreciative eye will detect the hundreds of glass shards delicately placed to create a floral bouquet that will last forever. Also on exhibit will be his classic depic-

tions of landscapes, sunsets and even a doorway to paradise! These unique works of art provide the viewer with an explosion of color, depth and dimension that satisfy one’s love of nature while creatively capturing events that occur everyday. The Queen of this show, “The Lady in the Jeweled Hat” will be featured in a trilogy of her glass and crystal-studded adventures. Jewelry lovers will also be able to treat themselves to pieces of the hand-made repurposed crystal jewelry, made by Sandy, that inspired the creation of this lovely lady. Dom-O-Nick is an award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited over recent years at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers, the Centers for the Arts in Bonita Springs, The Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers, Marco Island Center for the Arts, the COCO Art Gallery in Estero and Neenie’s House Arts and Cultural Emporium in Fort Myers. DAAS invites all Southwest Florida art collectors, supporters and enthusiasts to join them for the opening reception to meet the artist.

DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 1815 Fowler St. in the Butterfly Estates complex in Fort Myers. The gallery’s temporary business hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information about the venue and how to become a member can be found at www.daascoop.com or by calling 239-590-8645.

Laurie is a mixed media artist — she uses various mediums to break the boundaries between different art forms. She paints with acrylics and adds embellishments to create unique, memorable and whimsical feelings for the pieces she creates. She moved back to the Nashville area in 2004 and began cowriting with country, bluegrass and folk artists (Donna Ulisse, Mike Richardson) and writers. Louise had a major creative breakthrough in 2007 when she had a fortuitous co-writing session with famed Americana producer and writer, Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams). They wrote the song, "Doubling Back," for a documentary film by IU professor Ron Osgood, called “My Vietnam, Your Iraq” which was broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. Audience members would tell her that they enjoyed the stories between the songs as much as the songs and her strong expressive voice was described as “…like listening to Patty Griffin and Susan Tedeschi at the same time.” She’s played at The Bluebird Café in Nashville,

Annual Christmas Carol Sing returns on Dec. 7

Celebrate the holidays and help feed the hungry by singing at the 30th Annual Christmas Carol Sing sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships, First Presbyterian Church and Susan Bennett Marketing & Media. The Christmas Carol Sing will be Tuesday, Dec. 7 at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second St. in downtown Fort Myers, between Lee Street and Royal Palm Avenue. Admission is free, although organizers request voluntary donations of at least two cans of non-perishable food for The Soup Kitchen, operated by Community Cooperative, and a voluntary cash donation, if you can. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the event, two sing-alongs are planned at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to show time. Community Cooperative is an innovative nonprofit organization made up of social service entrepreneurs fighting to end homelessness and hunger in the community. The Christmas Carol Sing was founded by the late Sam Galloway, Jr., who made feeding the hungry part of his Happenings Magazine

life’s work and was one of the founders of Community Cooperative. “On this 30th anniversary of the Carol Sing that Sam founded, it seems only appropriate that we continue the tradition in his memory,” said First Presbyterian Pastor Dr. Paul deJong. Cash donations are especially needed because Community Cooperative can buy five times as much food for the same amount of money that residents spend at local grocery stores. The Christmas Carol Sing is a festival of holiday music and family fun. This year’s 90-minute performance will feature the First Presbyterian Church Choir, soloists and other special guests singing favorite holiday carols with audience sing-a-longs. There is a strong rumor that Santa Claus will be making a surprise visit for the “children in all of us.” In 2019, Community Cooperative received 2,800 pounds of canned goods and other non-perishable items from the Christmas Carol Sing. The food was immediately distributed to those in need. For more information, call First Presbyterian Church at 239-334-2261 or visit www.fpcfortmyers.org.

We offer only the freshest seafood, certified Angus Beef, and other local unique innovative entrees. We also feature an extensive wine list, with over thirty wines by the glass. We even grow our own house herbs and spices in our courtyard garden, which is available for private parties and events. The Barrel Room (next door) offers live music also.
