AugustWilson’sThePiano LessonwillbestagedApril20-30 attheAlliancefortheArtsinFort Myers.

ThePianoLesson,setin1936 Pittsburgh,focusesontheconflictingwillsofbrotherandsister,Boy WillieandBerniece,regardingtheir family’smostimportantheirloom,a piano.Butthisisnoordinarypiano asitcontainsintricatecarvingsby theirgreat-grandfatherdepicting themanystrugglesintheirfamily history.Thepianowasoriginally ownedbytheslaveownersoftheir family,withcarvingsoftheirgreatgrandmother,grandfather,andthe likenessoftheirwholefamilytree.

BoyWilliewantstosellthe pianotopurchaseaparcelofland inMississippi,apieceofthevery landonwhichhisancestorshad beenslaves.Thiswouldallowhim tofinallyachievehisdreamofmakingalivingfarming hisownproperty.ButBernieceholdsstrong,viewingthe

pianoasanintegralreminderof wheretheycamefrom,whothey arenow,andasalegacyfortheir futuregenerations.

AlbertoChailoskyisoneofthe nation’sleadingminiaturists,nowworkingfull-timeatthiscraftafterservingfor elevensuccessfulyearsasaset designerinNewYorkCityforvarious BroadwayshowsandSaturdayNight Live.For“StyledSteel,”Chailoskycreatedthreeminiaturesportraying,in exactingdetail,gas-stationcultureofa pastera.Theseinclude“TexacoGas Pumps,”“MohawkGasStation,”and “SinclairGasStation,”alldepictedas

rustedversionsofwhattheyonce were.Theminiaturestestifyto theartist’sabilitytoseeand presentthebeautyindecayand neglect.

TribbycuratorMargeLee emphasizesthat,although “StyledSteel”willundoubtedly interestthosewhoappreciatethe beautyofautomotivedesign,the exhibitionalsowillappealtoanyonewhoadmiresexactingskills intheartsofwatercolor,photography,andminiatures.

Interestingly,ifnotironically,inordertoaccomplishthisnewwork, CrystalandPeteDamore hadtosetasidethework they'ddonepreviously,as aveterinarycardiologist andacomputerprogrammer,respectively.Thetwo metatanopenmicin CollegeStation,Texas,in2009andsoonmovedtoHouston together.Withheronacousticguitar/leadvocalsandhimon clawhammerbanjo/harmonyvocals,theworkofmusiccontinued onthesideasbothhadfull-timejobs,untiltheythrewallcaution tothewindandhittheroadinanRV.

OpeningtheApril8showislocaltalentBarbaraChamberlin. Herpassionforplayingtheguitarandsingingharmonyatevery chanceshegetsledhertobecomingoneofthefoundingboard membersoftheACMA.

MaryJames,theyoungestof6children, learnedtoreadmusicbeforeshecouldreadwords andwasanofficialsinger/songwriterbeforeshe’d startedherfirstdayofkindergarten.Withthehelp ofhermom,shewroteherthemesong“Mean MaryfromAlabam’.”

Thepressimmediatelybaptizedherwiththis handle,andshe’sbeenMeanMaryeversince.It wasclearthatMaryhadtheappetiteandtalentfor musicandwriting.

Marywasnowplayingguitar,banjoandfiddle. Sherecordedherfirstalbumatagesix,andspent fivehoursadayoninstrumentalandvocalpractice alongwithherliveperformances.Attheendofthe secondgrade,shewentintohomestudyandalso startedappearingdailyontheCountryBoyEddie Show,aregionalTVprogramoutofBirmingham, Alabama.Duringthistime,shealsoappearedregularlyinNashvilleattheNashvillePalace,onthe NashvilleNetwork, theElvisPresley Museum,andon Printer’sAlley.
