Florida Rep promo photos by Joe Dafeldecker

6 - APRIL 2022

Florida Repertory Theatre’s 2021-2022 Season continues with the rock ‘n’ roll sensation, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story by Alan Janes. The musical tells the story of Buddy’s rise to stardom and how he transformed popular music almost overnight, and plays in the Historic Arcade Theatre now through April 13. Sixty years ago, a young man with thick black glasses changed the face of popular music. “The Buddy Holly Story” tells the story of the three years when Buddy became the world’s top

recording artist and a musical legend! The musical follows Buddy’s meteoric rise from country star to a pioneer of early rock ‘n’ roll. In just a few short years in the 1950’s, Buddy’s music revolutionized the industry, this musical takes audiences along for the ride – with all of Buddy’s hits along the way like “Everyday,” “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day” and so many more. The ensemble cast all plays multiple roles and multiple instruments – and they are all making their Florida Rep debuts, though many are “Buddy” veterans.

THEATRE

When We Were Young and Unafraid at Naples Players From March 30 April 24, When We Were Young and Unafraid is in the Tobye Studio Theater in Naples. The story is set in the 1970s and examines the harsh realities of life before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, and before women had places to turn in times of distress. Smart and exciting, it will leave you on the edge of your seat with a renewed appreciation of a woman’s rights. Sarah Treem, writer of the edge-ofyour-seat Netflix series House of Cards, created this powerful play about an unassuming, cozy bed and breakfast that moonlights as a battered women’s shelter. Agnes (Paulette Oliva) lives on a remote island off the coast of Washington with her 16 year old daughter, Penny (Gigi Kirton) where she upholds an ironclad set of rules and boundaries to protect her B&B guests and the women she shelters. To Agnes’ dismay, her latest runaway, Mary Anne (Amy Hughes), is beginning to influence Penny. Hannah (Shelley Gothard), a radical searching for a man-free commune, somehow winds up in Agnes’ house as does Paul (Bernardo Santana) who’s a placid songwriter and a paying guest at the bed and breakfast. Associate artistic director Jessica Walck says, “The Tobye Studio

Theater is the perfect place for thought-provoking pieces like When We Were Young and Unafraid. We chose this show because it has something to say about the strength of women, where they have been and where they are headed. The history of women is mired in challenges that have been overcome by bravery, persistence, hope, and sisterhood. This play explores what it was like to be a woman in 1972 and asks us to consider how much has changed in 50 years.” Directed by Emma Canalese, the

production team includes stage management by Alivia Cross, costume design by Dot Auchmoody, lighting design by Davis Parker, scenic design by Starlet Jacobs, sound design by Sean McGinley, and deck management by Manda Smith. Regular price tickets are $42 per person and flex season ticket holders can purchase additional tickets at $35. Greater Tuna brings the laughs at Off Broadway Palm Theatre

The Off Broadway Palm Theatre presents the laugh-aminute comedy Greater Tuna playing now through April 30. The New York Posts said, “The audience all but exploded the theatre with laughter.” The Washington Post said it’s, “Hilarious, a tribute to the art of acting.” Greater Tuna is a comic satire that launches into side-splitting amusement when the residents of the fictional south Texas town of Tuna come hysterically to life. Just two actors portray 20 men and women (and a dog) in a tour de farce of quick-change artistry and the audience is taken through all the quirks, foibles, and downright insanities of the citizens of Tuna. Greater Tuna began as a simple party skit based on a cartoon in Austin, Texas, and by 1985 it

became the most produced play in the United States, finding an instant audience coast to coast. A successful New York run led to an HBO special produced by Norman Lear. Directing Greater Tuna is Off Broadway Palm’s artistic producer Paul Bernier. Portraying the over 20 roles will be Michael Santora and Michael Weaver, who will have many quick costume changes, use inventive voice work, and pull off some very creative timing. Whitney Hackett exhibit

at DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery

In the month of April, DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts is showcasing the art of visual artist and local business owner Whitney Hackett. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, April 1 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the monthly Fort Myers Art Walk event. The exhibition will be on display through Sunday, May 1. Whitney Hackett grew up in Fort Myers, where she currently lives and works as an artist. She is currently the owner of Quartz and Clover – an eclectic store in the heart of downtown. Her paintings are full of vibrancy, with a vintage feel. She explores memory and nostalgia through her body of dreamy and celebratory paintings. Her innocent appreciation for everyday life encourages a childlike playfulness in her work. Through the enshrinement of simple things, she elevates the ordinary to extraordinary. The juxtaposition of her imagery speaks to the interconnectedness of all life, the way we assign meaning to the material world, and the honoring of our existence. Three exhibits on display at Visual Arts Center in Bonita

The Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs will host three exhibits in April. Romancing the Stone exhibit features more than 80 works by students and faculty of the Centers’ Stone Sculpture Studio. The exhibit runs April 1 – 28. ter of the National Association of Women Artists and will be on display April 11 through May 27. The mission of the National Association of Women Artists, Inc. ArtBeat Studios spreading

the love for PACE in April

ArtBeat Studios Gallery and Gifts, located in Royal Palm Square, is the perfect place to begin decorating, or redecorating your Florida home. With over 23 local artists from which to chose, you will find that perfect painting, sculpture, glass or ceramic piece to make your space truly unique. April is “Spread the Love for PACE” month at ArtBeat Studios. PACE Center for Girls’ vision is "a world where all girls and young women have power in a just and equitable society; that each one deserves an opportunity to find her voice, achieve her potential and celebrate life defined by responsibility, dignity, serenity and grace.” An art contest for 5-15 year olds, each participant will have a wooden heart to paint, collage, glitter, etc., with an underlying message of PACE Center for Girls. The young artists will be divided into age groups and winners will be chosen by a panel of ArtBeat Studios’ artists. Participants will have their hearts on display at ArtBeat Studios for one month and the hearts will then be auctioned, with all proceeds benefitting PACE Center for Girls. Call Barbara at ArtBeat Studios for more information at 239-225-9770. New artists at the Fort Myers gallery include Lisa Fitz-Gerald of She Shells Charters. Lisa’s florals made from shells are beautiful, permanent specimens, and never need watering. Lisa will teach two classes at the gallery in April. Kate Swanstrom, a certified gemologist and accomplished painter, brings her passion and story-telling abilities to her work. Kate’s paintings reflect the joyous triumphs and the struggles of the journey we all are on. Debi DeCampos is ArtBeat’s macrame wizard—her exquisite necklaces and wall-hangings show her artistic gift for home decor and fashion. Bob Tabolt’s photography draws one into the natural scene, whether it is on the beach at sunset or in the watery marshes. What’s happening at Neenie’s House?

A lot. And more to come. Why not break out of the box, and check out East Fort Myers. Neenie’s House is an arts and cultural emporium. A sweet little Florida house has evolved into Love Your Rebellion’s Zine Library, a hip gift shop, and a fancy coffee café. And don’t forget to get your Loveboat Ice Cream creations. The back yard is an event space called Peace Plaza, that Neenie rents for parties, rallies, fashion shows or whatever. Currently, there is Sunset Yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. outside in the Peace Plaza. The second Friday of every month is ArtSmack, from 6 to 9 p.m. A blend of the artistic, spiritual and musical. Live DJs,

artisans, and cool vibes. The next one will be Friday, April 8. Every Saturday and Sunday is the East Palm Mercado, the neighborhood fleamarket, where anyone can sell anything. Coming up at Neenie’s on April 23 will be ZineFest, The Love Your Rebellion Celebration. Coming soon will be more fashion shows, live music, and displays of the works of the hottest local artists. So stay tuned – turn on - to what’s happening at Neenie’s House. Neenie’s House is located at 481 Marsh Ave., just of Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers. Roger Deering, Kim Carioto-Krugle art at Cape Coral Library

The art of Roger Deering and Kim Carioto-Krugle is on display at the Cape Coral Library in April and part of May. The library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace, and the current exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours April 2 through May 14. Southwest Florida’s natural beauty is Roger Deering’s favorite subject. He creates his gorgeous oil paintings by employing a brush as well as a palette knife to achieve

Roger Deering

the desired effect. Although Deering took some art classes way back when he was in college, he didn’t’ have the time to enjoy painting during the decades he was busy working. It’s now been twenty years since he retired, took some more art courses, picked up the brushes, and started winning awards in several art organizations first in Maine and later here in Florida. Roger is currently an active member of the Cape Coral Art League. Kim Carioto-Krugle’s art is primarily created using either of two different media: oil paint or paper. The paintings are on canvas and executed using brush and/or palette knives. The paper pieces are a combination of cut and torn papers. Some of her paper “mosaics” are so intricate that viewers often believe at first glance that they are actually paintings. Kim Carioto received a Bachelor’s of Science in Art Education and a Masters in Humanities with a Fine Arts concentration. Her art teaching career spanned 36 years in four states and included all grade levels.

After retirement, Kim is living in Florida and is a member of the Cape Coral Art League, where she has won many awards in the monthly shows. In 2017, she had a solo exhibit at Cape Coral Library. Her work has also been displayed at the Cape Coral Art Center, COCO Gallery in Estero, the Annual Cape Coral Festival of the Arts and the Slidell Cancer Center.

AMERICANA COMMUNITY MUSIC ASSOCIATION

Annie Wenz, Rod MacDonald start a month of music

The Americana Community Music Association welcomes Annie Wenz and Rod MacDonald on April 2 at 7 p.m. at the ACMA listening room located at All Faiths Unitarian Church, 2756 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. Annie Wenz's music has been heard on ESPN, as independent film scores, and from major league ballparks & Harley dealerships around the U.S., to TV and theater productions around the world. Annie Wenz After many years of loving a career as nursing supervisor at a psychiatric crisis shelter in Massachusetts, (while doing music for her patients and on the side), Annie's music career called her to the road... (though she is still an RN) Now Annie's muse-a rama leads her from brilliantly poetic watercolor story songs about life, love and backpacking through jungles & villages around the globe... to vivid gritty & tattered hard ridden road songs penned during long distant blue highway

trips on the 2 wheels of her motorcycle & 4 wheels of her camper as settles & travels & shares her music. Rod MacDonald is a singer-songwriter, novelist, and educator. He was a "big part of the 1980s folk revival in Greenwich Village clubs," performing at the Speakeasy, The Bottom Line, Folk City, and the "Songwriter's Exchange" at the Cornelia Street Cafe. He co-founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival, now a non-profit, and is still the president and Rod MacDonald co-producer of its events. He is perhaps best known for his songs "American Jerusalem," about the "contrast between the rich and the poor in Manhattan" (Sing Out!), "A Sailor's Prayer," "Coming of the Snow," "Every Living Thing" and "My Neighbors in Delray," a description of the Sept. 11 hijackers' last days in Delray Beach, Fla., where MacDonald has lived since 1995. Door donation is $12 for ACMA members and $18 for the general public.

George Worthmore & the Dive-bombers April 16 George Worthmore & The Dive-bombers will perform Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the ACMA listening room. The sound this trio puts out is toe tapping, foot stomping, good old American music. Front man, George Worthmore has played backup guitar for Bo Diddley, Ben E. King, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Lou Christy and The Platters. He is also a Blues Hall of Fame inductee.

Rounding out this trio is Nat Langston, Sarasota's fingerpickin' Whiz-Kid and Chad Clifford, veteran rock and roll bassist. The show is interlaced with humorous comments and amusing stories about the songs. They have been called "the cool side of the pillow." Opening the show are ACMA members Pete Bensen and Glen Sabatka. Cost is $12 for members and $18 for nonmembers.

thought-provoking and comes straight from the heart. David also enjoys performing obscure covers and also songs by local songwriters. Ross has been writing songs since he picked up a guitar at age 10. He went on to study music and classical guitar at Rutgers University. His songs reflect the regional influences from all of the parts of the country that he has lived from New Jersey to the West Coast to the Mid-West and now Southwest Florida, His songs feature catchy tunes and lyrics and audience members can often be seen dancing and swaying and singing along while he performs. Choral Artistry, under artistic director Dr. Trent Brown, presents the Southwest Florida premiere performance of “Considering Matthew Shepard” on Sunday, April 10 at 4 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church at 4544 Coronado Pkwy in Cape Coral. Jonathan Edwards among April concerts in Bonita

The Center for the Arts Bonita Springs has three major concerts planned for April. Jonathan Edwards will perform Friday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Hinman Auditorium. You’ll hear his classics, such as “Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy,” “Sometimes,” “One Day Closer,” “Don’t Cry Blue,” “Emma,” “Everybody Knows Her,” “Athens County” and everyone’s favorite ode to putting a good buzz on, “Shanty.” And the anthemic “Sunshine (Go Away Today),” that fierce proclamation of protest and independence that resonated with thousands of frustrated young people when it was released in 1971. Almost 40 years later, the songs and the artist continue to be embraced by faithful followers and new fans alike. Tickets range from $32 to $42. The Dan Miller-Lew Del Gatto Quintet will perform the music of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn on Saturday, April 16 at Hinman Auditorium. Join them to celebrate the genius of Ellington and Strayhorn, whose compositions are an integral part of the Great American Songbook and form the backbone of modern jazz. Hear favorites such as “Take the A Train,” “Caravan,” “Do Nothing ‘til You Hear from Me” and more. The quintet includes trumpeter Dan Miller (Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman), tenor saxophonist Lew Del Gatto (Saturday Night Live Band & Frank Sinatra), NYC pianist Roy Gerson, bassist Paul Shewchuk and drummer Tony Vigilante. Partnerships for this grand scale production of Tosca include the Naples Philharmonic as the orchestra and the Fort Myers Mastersingers as the chorus. The plot entails a tragic and political love triangle involving Mario Cavaradossi, a painter, who is deeply in love with Floria Tosca, a famous opera singer. This full scale production with original sets and costumes will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Featured in this opera are two of the most famous power-

The title role will be performed by Robyn Marie Lamp, whose voice has been described as “robust, easily produced, golden but warm rather than metallic.” She is this year's winner of the D’Angelo competition and has appeared with Boston Lyric Opera and made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2019. Roman native Alessio Borraggine, tenor, will portray the heroic painter Mario Cavaradossi. He is consistently praised for the beauty of his tone, his musicality and the physical embodiment of his roles. Upon his New York City debut with Teatro Grattacielo in the lead role of Marcello in Leoncavallo’s La bohème, “of particular note were those of Borraggine, who carried us away with Marcello’s love” (Opera News).

Corey Crider, baritone, will portray the jealous Baron Scarpia. He joined the Metropolitan Opera roster in February 2022 and recently made his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Malatesta in Don Pasquale. Other recent highlights include Marcello in La bohème with the Munich Philharmonic, Sharpless in Madame Butterfly with Dayton Opera, and Escamillo in Carmen with Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Southern Grand Slam

Music Festival April 22-23

Get ready for two days of country music, all in a beautiful major league ball park. The Southern Grand Slam Music Festival is set for April 22 and 23 with headliners Dylan Scott on Friday and Justin Moore on Saturday. The music festival will take place at the Charlotte Sports Complex, 2300 El Jobean Road, Port Charlotte. Tickets are $55 per day or $95 for two days. VIP tables are available for $800 and include 10 wristbands for both days of the show. Buy tickets online at www.eventbrite.com. Parking opens at 11 a.m. both days and is $10. RV parking and overnight parking is $55. Gates will open at 1 p.m. both days. The Friday, April 22 music schedule includes Dylan Scott, Jon Langston, Tobacco Road Band and Texas Hill Band. The music on Saturday, April 23 includes Justin Moore, Jack Michael Music, Tom Jackson Band and Jim Brown. Justin Moore has built a loyal following over the past decade with his traditional country sound and captivating live shows. Those fans helped boost

his fifth studio album, Late Nights and Longnecks, to the top of the charts upon its release. Lead track “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” and follow up “Why We Drink” both peaked at No. 1 on both Mediabase and Billboard bringing the Arkansas native’s tally to nine chart-toppers. Moore’s previous project, Kinda Don’t Care, earned the singer his third consecutive No. 1 album debut and features his chart-topping singles “You Look Like I Need A Drink” and “Somebody Else Will.” It served as a follow up to his second No. 1 album release, the Gold-certified Off The Beaten Path. Over his 10 plus year career, Moore’s No. 1 hits have also included “Point at You,” “Lettin’ The Night Roll” “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,” “Small Town USA” and “Till My Last Day” as well as seven Top 10 hits and Platinum-certified albums Justin Moore and Outlaws Like Me. Dylan Scott - April 22

Happenings Magazine

Justin Moore - April 23 early on. Chief among them is this: If you want something done, you’ve got to make it happen yourself – even if it’s becoming a bona fide country star. Just ask Curb Records talent Dylan Scott. “You have to work at it if you want it,” the hitmaker says. “You can’t sit back and expect someone else to make it happen for you, you’ve gotta do it yourself.” Scott has lived by that mantra his whole life, and lately he’s been rewarded for the effort. With his romantic, platinum-certified #1 hit “My Girl,” gold-certified Top 5 smash “Hooked,” and Top 5 breakout album Dylan Scott, he’s transformed real-life experience into chart-topping success, sold out some of the nation’s most famous venues on headline tours,

and performed for millions on national TV. And now with his electrifying Nothing To Do Town - EP, a new chapter begins – one that proves no matter how far Scott comes, he won’t forget where he started. After a blistering rise through the country ranks, his bootstrap-pulling work ethic paid off. “My Girl” shot to the top of the radio charts in the summer of 2016, earning Scott his first-ever platinum certification and revealing an artist with a knack for hot-and-heavy sensitivity plus a strong connection to fans, having surpassed 200 million views on YouTube alone with intense social media support. lead guitarist Ryan Smith and bassist Winston Roye. Soul Asylum initially formed in the early '80s under the name Loud Fast Rules when Pirner was still in high school with friends Dan Murphy and Karl Mueller, and became part of the celebrated Minneapolis local music scene alongside fellow indie bands the Replacements and Hüsker Dü. This success led to the band entering the majorlabel mainstream with 1988's Hang Time and its 1990 follow-up, And the Horse They Rode In On, before achieving a commercial breakthrough with 1992's triple platinum Grave Dancers Union. That album spawned several international hits, including "Runaway Train," which won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and "Black Gold," and led to steady alternative radio and MTV airplay. Soul Asylum continued to enjoy mainstream success with 1995's platinumcertified Let Your Dim Light Shine, which featured the hit "Misery," and 1998's Candy from a Stranger; the group also appeared on the soundtrack for multiple Kevin Smith movies, including Clerks. Since returning to action with 2006's The Silver Lining, Soul Asylum has recorded steadily, and become a reliable presence on the road. Joan Osborne is an eight-

time Grammy nominee and multi-platinum selling recording artist. A native of Kentucky, she moved to NYC to attend NYU Film School, but dropped out after becoming involved in New York’s downtown music scene. Her 1995 album Relish was a critical and commercial success and spawned the international hit single and video “What If God Was One Of Us.“ She directed the video for Relish’s second single St. Teresa and created the artwork for the album’s physical package. The Spin Doctors are best known for their early 1990s hits "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong", which peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 7 and No. 17, respectively. The current members are Chris Barron (lead vocals), Anthony Krizan (guitar and vocals), Aaron Comess (drums) and Mark White (bass). All concerts are free and held outdoors. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs and all ages are welcome. Coolers, backpacks and pets will not be permitted. For more information, visit www.moreinparadise.com.
