Laboratory Theater extends

Botticelli in the Fire

The Laboratory Theater of Florida has extended the run of the wildly popular regional premiere of Jordan Tannahill’s multimedia extravaganza, Botticelli in the Fire, which opened on Feb. 26. The theater has added eight performances: March 25, 26 and 27 and April 1, 2 and 3 at 8 p.m., and two Sunday matinees on March 28 and April 4 at 2 p.m. This extension is possible thanks to a combination of the play’s overwhelming popularity combined with the reduced seating capacity to keep everyone as safe as possible. Sandro Botticelli is a hedonist and the promiscuous life of the party. While painting his masterpiece, The Birth of Venus, the plague rages outside, and a conservative preacher is blaming the sodomites. When the political tension comes to a head, will Botticelli sacrifice his painting or his young apprentice, Leonardo da Vinci? Botticelli in the Fire is a historical re-imagining of the legendary artists Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci’s private lives. The story unfolds from the point of view of Botticelli himself, who says, “It’s not just a play, it’s an extravaganza!” Director Annette Trossbach says, “Sassy, sexy, funny, heartbreaking, timely - Botticelli in the Fire is the most revolutionary theater I've read since Hamilton. Author Jordan Tannahill excavates the queer history of Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci to tell the story of the creation of The Birth of Venus with all the

political machinations, fear, urgency, hysteria, and privilege experienced by the main actors at the time. Set in the 15th century, Tannahill employs casual vernacular and modern elements (cell phones, skinny jeans) as well as dance, 15th and 20th-century music, and audio-visual elements to tell this historically-based story, which is a masterpiece in modern theater. Guests will see parallels to today's world in the plague, the rise of extremism, classism, and the scapegoating of sex and sexuality for political agendas.” This show features Steven Coe as Sandro Botticelli, Steven Michael Kennedy as Leonardo da Vinci, Madre Maria (Renee Freeman) dishes some facts to young Daniel Sabiston as Botticelli (Coe) while death rages around them

Hotbed Hotel opens April 15 THE CHARLOTTE PLAYERS

Welcome to the Hotbed Hotel, which is the title of the Charlotte Players’ April offering at the Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte. The title establishment is the “one-star” Turtle Beach Hotel in the Florida Keys, which is going through hard times and is on the market. When the husbandand-wife owners hear that a prospective New York buyer has flown to nearby Miami and is coming to inspect the hotel, they hurriedly put together a plan to make the place seem busier than it is. Their staff will masquerade as paying guests, giving the impression that the hotel is overflowing with loyal customers and vacationers. “When I select a play to direct, the first rule is, it has to be funny,” said director Jerry Jones. “Actually, that’s also the second and third rule. It must

Happenings Magazine

be funny, funny, funny. And that’s the best way to describe Hotbed Hotel.” Jones said, “Even better, the play is also sexy, which you kind of figure out from the title. It’s written by Michael Parker, who also wrote plays with his wife, Susan, who described their works as ‘naughty but nice.’ That certainly holds true for this play.” The Parkers met when Susan acted in some of Michael’s plays. They were married on South Venice beach in Florida in 2004 and began writing together. Their collaborations included two Charlotte Players hits, “Sin, Sex & the CIA” and “Sex Please We're Sixty.” Sadly, Michael died in 2019, but he left a wealth of plays that will continue to set box office records in this country and abroad.

“Not only does a Parker play pull in an audience, it also pulls in great actors,” Jones said. “This is a big cast – nine roles – and I was amazed at the large turnout at auditions. Not only did we get a lot of people, we got a lot of very talented people. Some of them I’ve seen in other Parker plays and they had me rolling on the floor.” Jones also complimented set designer Chris Smith, who “did a fantastic job with a very complex set,” and costumers Richard Itczak and Pam Jones. “We’ve got a big cast with multiple costume changes,” he said. “We probably use enough costumes for a handful of plays.” Hotbed Hotel opens on Thursday, April 15, for a nine-show run through April 25. There are evening performances (Thursday through Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees on April 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. Purchase tickets at www.charlotteplayers.org or by calling 941-255-1022. Hit musical opens April 15 at Broadway Palm

Broadway Palm presents A Bronx Tale playing April 15 through May 22. This streetwise musical is based on Academy Award nominee Chazz Palminteri’s story that The New York Times hails as “A Critics’ Pick! The kind of tale that makes you laugh and cry.” This hit crowd-pleaser takes you to a working class Italian American neighborhood in the Bronx in the 1960s where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he would love to be. Bursting with high-energy dance numbers and original doo-wop tunes, A Bronx Tale is an unforgettable story of loyalty, love, respect and most importantly, family. The musical was adapted by Palminteri’s 1989 oneman show and that same show was also made into the 1993 Robert De Niro film in which he made his directorial debut.

Into the Woods on Florida Rep outdoor stage

Florida Repertory Theatre presents Into the Woods and Into the Woods Jr. as part of the Education Department’s popular Conservatory Program. Both productions feature a professional creative team and star local teens on the theatre’s outdoor stage. Into the Woods plays April 14 – April 24 and Into the Woods Jr is on the stage April 28 – May 2. All performances begin at 8 p.m., and tickets range in price from $60 to $100 for a socially distanced six-person square on Florida Rep’s lawn. “Producing live theatre has been a tremendous challenge, but these students haven proven, time and time again, to let nothing get in their way of creating live theatre. Their professionalism and sense of responsibility never cease to amaze me,” said education director Kody C. Jones. “Into the Woods can’t be timelier for 2021 as the piece showcases characters facing unprecedented challenges but through the lens of fairy-tale characters. In many fairy tales, we often see our characters find their happy ending, but this story presents challenges for our iconic characters that parallels the

Happenings Magazine

everyday challenges of real life,” Jones continued. “our production centers around the concept of setting ‘the woods’ as a metaphor for ’life,’ and as we know life can present joy and laughter but also challenges and pain. Each character navigates through the woods in search of their destiny, and through the joys and challenges of their journey grow into the person they are bound to be.” Into the Woods is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s modern classic that looks at all the famous fairy tales in one spellbinding story. Cinderella, Rapunzel,

Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, a wicked witch, and a pair of handsome princes are just some of the characters who appear in this musical where everyone has a wish and everyone wants a happy ending. Into the Woods follows a baker and his wife on a journey through the forest as they try to break an evil witch’s curse. Together they discover just how far they’ll go to make their dreams come true and how their actions have consequences they never intended. The Spring Conservatory features two different versions of the modern classic. The older students will perform the full version of the musical, but the younger Conservatory students perform Into the Woods, Jr., which is shorter and ends with the first act – where all the fairy tale characters have found their happy endings. The full version of the musical takes a darker turn in the second act when the realities of wishes come true come to haunt some of our heroes. Seating is limited and Florida Rep asks that tickets be purchased in advance, online at www.FloridaRep.org or by calling 239-332-4488.

Cuban art exhibits at Davis Art Center ART

The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center offers two unique art exhibitions for the month of April. Remodeling by artist Norlam de Leon will be featured in the Grand Atrium. In the Capital Gallery on the second floor, Radial Pilgrim by Alex Lago will be showing. The opening night reception takes place during Art Walk on Friday, April 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. In the immense custom of establishing a work of questions and answers with “reality”, the questions are imperative. Answers only come with time, the living advancement and a host of experiences that may give an ambiguous meaning of existence. Norlam de Leon was born in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba. At the Provincial Culture House, Norlam began classes with the self-taught painter, Humberto Cuervo and was forevermore committed to the world of the fine arts. Upon arriving in the United States in 2013, he has been shown in many exhibitions, a few private show-

ings, as well as in the permanent collections of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Florida International University at Miami. Through Norlam’s Remodeling exhibition, he hopes to reflect the thoughts of the human condition. Norlam takes cues from the roughest organic surfaces creating unique works of earth elements such as rocks, water, and fire to carry the essence of Cuban flavor into his pieces. Norlam’s tridimensional compositions are created with an unsurpassed originality via engravings, wood carvings, metal cuttings, sculptures, paintings on canvas as well as on paper with great complexities and smart use of colors. Cuban American artist Alex Lago studied painting at the prestigious San Alejandro School of Art, in Havana after graduating as a biochemist from the University of Havana. His work has been exhibited in personal and group exhibitions in Latin America, Europe and North America. Alex’s Radial Pilgrim exhibition represents the true connectedness of everything. Alex’s idea of a walking island is a paradox itself, just a starting point, to speak visually of the experience of growing up in motion, it is a personal evocation of the origin and the path, of a perennial process of self-knowledge and reconciliation. His use of watercolors and oils takes the viewer into a dream phase and brings them back to the reality of one’s self reflection once again. These pieces selected for this showing have become a path on the way to no longer avoid his own self confrontations and he hopes the viewer will feel the challenges a man faces as he leaves the past behind to live in the present. ART

Anita Putnam at Hirdie Girdie Gallery

Hirdie Girdie Gallery announces contemporary acrylic artist Anita Putnam as April’s guest artist. Anita worked in the insurance industry, but has created art all her life. She attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and studied with nationally known painters. She currently paints in a minimalist style that distills her subject matter into its simplest forms. She reduces a complicated subject into a few basic shapes that capture its gesture and character. The large flat

shapes are made interesting by subtly varying their hue and intensity. Expressive gestures fill the paper and asymmetrical positive shapes create interesting negative shapes. These works of art are full of life and energy. Anita has the ability to find the exact gesture that tells a story and imparts a sense of warmth, intimacy and friendship. Her paintings make seemingly unimportant experiences and unnoticed subjects awaken all our senses. She creates a world of figures,

patterns, questions, and fun, brimming with a multitude of active shapes and colors. Formerly a resident of Connecticut and Sanibel and now living at Shell Point, Anita participates in the juried shows at the community’s Tribby Art Center, winning many awards for her unique art. Hirdie Girdie Gallery is located at 2490 Library Way, Sanibel. For more information, call 239-395-0027 or visit online at www.hirdiegirdiegallery.com

ACT Gallery welcomes Barbara Gage Mulford

Arts for ACT Gallery will feature the work of realist painter Barbara Gage Mulford in April. An opening reception will be held Friday, April 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk. Scratch off an outer paint layer, revealing multi colored crayon below, leaned on a chalkboard ledge among 20 or so others…A floral bouquet piece winning first prize in first grade class. Barbara knew then that there was something very different about her art and that she would be a professional artist some day. “Art won’t pay the bills,” she was told over and over. Supporting herself at 18, she found employment in business building a lucrative career for the next few decades, raising a family, putting art on hold. Following a mentor’s advice and lifelong dream, 2016 saw Barbara make the leap to career artist, first teaching art classes and moving to Southwest Florida, then exhibiting her own work. Barbara taught classes simultaneously at eight senior centers in Massachusetts and moving to Florida, at Arts for ACT Gallery and the former Art League of Fort Myers. Barbara is an active participant of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Art Poems projects. She exhibits regularly at the Arts for ACT Gallery and performs live painting demonstrations during Art Walk in front of the gallery. Barbara said she is excited to bring her love and appreciation of Florida’s birds, boats, and everglades to her first solo exhibition at the Arts for Act Gallery. Barefoot Movement - April 9

Bluegrass concerts coming to Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center

The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center presents two high energy bluegrass concerts this spring. The Barefoot Movement will perform on Friday, April 9, and the David Mayfield Parade will be performing on Friday May 21, both in celebration of bluegrass American roots music. When the stars align to team a fresh, young acoustic quartet with a pair of legendary studio wizards whose credits include projects by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles, the saying about “big shoes to fill” might be cause for concern. But not for the two men and two women who make up The Barefoot Movement. Just as their name suggests, the band that earned the International Bluegrass Music Association's prestigious Band of the Year Momentum Award in 2014 wants live audiences to be inspired by the casual, organic nature of their energetic live shows. But they also take that same philosophy with them into the recording studio, turning out instantly memorable tunes built around silky smooth bluegrass/Americana harmonies and laced with tantalizing flecks of bluesy grit. With their latest EP, Rise & Fly, Happenings Magazine

the Nashville-based musicians comfortably dip their bare toes into everything from the high-energy of “Doin’ Alright,” and the deceptively cheery but acerbic break-up tune, “Every Little Thing,” to the gutsy “Lonely Mississippi Blues” and the stirring call-and-response of the traditional “Early in the Morning.” The phrase “rise and fly,” from that tune, “captured very simply the theme of the whole project,” says singersongwriter fiddle player and chief songwriter Noah Wall. “Not only in that we’re

Davcid Mayfield Parade - May 21

bringing traditional stuff back to life, but also in that it’s been so long since we’ve had a new release of original material. With this batch, it’s the first non-holiday offering from our current line-up. So, it feels very much like rising from the ground up and letting these tunes finally take flight.” Grammy & Emmy nominated producer David Mayfield on guitar, mandolin and vocals joins two-time National Bluegrass Banjo Champion Steven Moore, and former member of The Railsplitters Christine King on fiddle and vocals, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bonnis on bass and vocals and former member of Cadillac Sky. Together, they parade into town for a light-hearted, funfilled night of harmony, hot licks, and laughs the whole family can enjoy. David Mayfield grew up playing bass and touring with his family’s bluegrass band. As a teenager he established himself as a hot picker collecting national awards for his dexterity on guitar and mandolin. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concerts start at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www.sbdac.com or call 239-3331933. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. APRIL 2021 - 37

Divas & dinner April 15 & 18

Gulfshore Opera has adjusted to these challenging times by offering an “Opera al Fresco” concert series which, by popular request, is continuing to add open air events. The Divas & Dinner concerts will have an Italian flavor at The Club at the Strand in Naples on April 15 and Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante in Punta Gorda on April 18. Each ticket purchase includes a lovely outdoor concert and a delicious dinner with social distant spacing between tables. GO Divas is Gulfshore Opera’s exciting, new, all female, vocal group. Comprised of six beautiful young ladies with finishing degrees in music, they perform a variety of classical vocal ensembles featuring rich harmonies, with piano accompaniment. Their repertoire spans the centuries from sacred works to lovely opera duets and trios to a cappella Swingle Singers arrangements of Beatles songs. For our Divas & Dinner concerts, you will classical favorites like the Cigarette Girls Chorus from Carmen, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, and familiar songs like “Stayin Alive” and “In My Life.” Gulfshore Opera is committed to keeping their patrons safe. Touchless check-in will be utilized, including mobile or electronic tickets. Masks are required for all indoor and outdoor locations. There will be limited and staggered seating to allow for social distancing. To reduce crowding, the concerts are one hour without intermission. The area will be

Marshall Tucker Band at The Ranch May 14

Gold Entertainment announces that the Marshall Tucker Band will be performing live for one show only at The Ranch Concert Hall & Saloon in Fort Myers on Friday, May 14. The Marshall Tucker Band is Doug Gray – lead vocals, B.B. Borden – drums, Tony Black – bass / vocals, Marcus James Henderson – keyboards / saxophone / flute / vocals, Chris Hicks – guitar / vocals and Rick Willis – guitar / vocals. Whenever you drop that proverbial quarter into the virtual jukebox of songs that always manage to reach down and touch your soul the exact moment you cue them up, you inevitably find certain artists have a deeper resonance than others when it comes to providing the soundtrack that mirrors the highs and lows of your own life. The Marshall Tucker Band is one such group that continues to have a profound level of impact on successive generations of listeners who’ve been searchin’ for a rainbow and found it perfectly represented by this tried-and-true Southern institution for over five decades. “I’ve been in tune with how music can make you feel, right from when I was first in the crib,” observes lead vocalist and bandleader Doug Gray, who’s been fronting the MTB since the very beginning. “I was born with that. And I realized it early on, back when I was a little kid and my mom and dad encouraged me to get up there and sing whatever song came on the juke-

box. It got to the point where people were listening to me more than what was on the jukebox!” The Marshall Tucker Band came together as a young, hungry, and quite driven six-piece outfit in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1972, having duly baptized themselves with the name of a blind piano tuner after they found it inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space — and they’ve been in tune with tearing it up on live stages both big and small all across the globe ever since. Plus, the band’s mighty music catalog, consisting of more than 20 studio albums and a score of live releases, has racked up multi-platinum album sales many times over in its wake. A typically rich MTB setlist is bubbling over with a healthy dose of indelible hits like the heartfelt singalong “Heard It in a Love Song,” the insistent pleading of “Can’t You See” (the signature tune of MTB’s late co-founding lead guitarist and then-principal songwriter Toy Caldwell), the testifying travelogue warning of “Fire on the Mountain,” the wanderlust gallop of “Long Hard Ride,” and the unquenchable yearning pitch of “Ramblin’,” to name but a few. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m. Special guest is Jack Michael. Tickets are available by phone at 1-800514-ETIX or online at either www.theranchfortmyers.com or www.goldentertainment.us.

Songwriters fest in May

It’s official, the Key West Songwriters Festival will return May 5 - 9, according to festival founder Charlie Bauer. The 25th annual festival will feature about 100 artists over the five days of events. Many of the veteran songwriters are expected to return this year, Bauer said. They include folks like Jeffrey Steele, Scotty Emerick, Dean Dillon, Steve Crawford, Robert Randolph and more. Most of the performances will be in open air venues like Smokin Tuna Saloon (festival headquarters), Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon, Sunset Green Event Lawn at the 24 North Hotel and other outdoor resorts. There will not be a massive street party concert like in years past, Bauer said. As always, events will be divided between ticketed and free admission. Bauer said artists are being added every day and schedules are getting firmed up. The festival website will begin posting artist and performance information soon. Bauer suggest attendees join the mailing list to get the most up to date info. Since 1997, the festival coordinators, the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) and

Bringing the music, fans, industry and business back to Key West will be a major factor on the road to recovery. Our festival has not only become a benchmark for songwriters but also an important part of the local economy,” added Bauer.
