BY MIKE MARIN

in Roger Miller By now, anyone who has a television set and a cable hook-up or satellite dish has probably seen that unbearably adorable commercial with the odd pairings of animals set to a great little ditty about Robin Hood and Little John. What that has to do with cellphones, I have no idea, but it has quickly become my all-time favorite commercial. It’s not because of the animals, however; it’s the music. Some of you, especially those with kids or grandkids, may have immediately recognized the theme from the 1973 Disney movie, “Robin Hood.” Much of the music for that movie, including the song (“Oo De Lally”) used for the ad, was written by the late Roger Miller, one of the best singer/songwriters of the 20th century.

Mr. Miller, who could turn a phrase like no other, is best known for his iconic “King of the Road,” but he was so much more than that. His lyrics range from humorous (“Just sittin’ ‘round drinkin’ with the rest of the guys. Six rounds are bought and I bought five.”) to serious (“Such a waste of two lives. It’s my belief pride is the chief cause in the decline in the number of husbands and wives.”) to downright silly (“My pappy was a pistol, I’m a son of a gun.”). And while I’ve never tried to roller skate in a buffalo herd, I have tried changing film with a kid on my back. Not easy to do without flipping the child over your head. Lest anyone think he was just a hokey country singer, in 1985 Mr. Miller received

Broadway’s Tony Award for Best Score for the musical “Big River.” His lyrics remain as picturesque as ever: “River in the rain. Sometimes at night you look like the long white train.” Roger is rightfully enshrined in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
