This one is really going to tax some of your memory cells. Do you remember shows you used to watch as a child? I have fuzzy memories of shows like “Romper Room” with Miss Nancy and that “magic mirror” of hers. Man, what the NSA wouldn’t have done to get their hands on that! Quick ... who was Capt. Kangaroo’s sidekick? Yep, Mr. Green Jeans! If you grew up in the ‘50s, ‘60s, or ‘70s, Bob Keeshan and his cast of characters was a morning staple. Speaking of sidekicks (of sorts), how about Shari Lewis and her glorified glove, Lambchop? Of course, there was “The Mickey Mouse Club” and, for our children, “Sesame Street.” Those last two programs highlight arguably the two biggest proponents of quality children’s entertainment who ever lived, Walt

Disney and Jim Henson both, sadly, gone much too soon. It is barely necessary to mention the legacy Mr. Disney has left behind. The entire world knows of Mickey the mouse, Donald the duck, Pluto the dog, and Goofy the ... umm, whatever. Movies like “Snow White,” “Cinderella,” and “Mary Poppins” are unqualified classics and his amazing theme parks have set the standard throughout the world. Carrying on Walt Disney’s tradition of original and iconic children’s programming for the next generation was Jim Henson. His Muppets appealed to both young and old alike. I dare say, children learned more from Bert and Ernie and Cookie Monster on “Sesame Street” than they ever did from kindergarten or first grade. Years later, “The
Muppet Show” was one of the best variety shows ever produced, for children and adults alike, starring both humans and felt. One example of Mr. Henson’s impact: the nominees for the People’s Choice Award for favorite television children’s program” in 1984 were, “Sesame Street,” “The Muppet Show,” and the great “Fraggle Rock.” I have no idea who won, nor does it really matter.
