“After visiting the show room and receiving some brilliant help and advice from Barry and Laura about what we could achieve with our galley style kitchen (simply by changing the cupboard doors, worktops and a new sink). The work was booked in and before we knew it, we had our amazing new look kitchen! “We are so pleased with the overall result and couldn’t recommend Dream Doors more. From the moment we walked into the show room to job completion, we received a brilliant service. The work was completed in a day which we couldn’t believe and meant that disruption was minimal too.

EXTINCTION REBLLION BIRMINGHAM Launched in October 2018, Extinction Rebellion wants to rally support worldwide around a common sense of urgency to tackle climate breakdown, citing inspirations from grass roots movements such as the Suffragettes and Martin Luther King. The message we have been hearing from our young people is begining to strike a chord with older generations as we fall deeper into the climate crisis. Extinction rebellion have been making headlines for hunger strikes, clashes with the police, defending their rights to protest, and are a group made up of people from all ages and walks of life. Speaking passionately about positive change at festivals, meetings and marches through the summer has spurred on the group’s action in Birmingham, and seen peaceful protests outside Primark, marches through Birmingham city centre and meetings to strengthen its growing community, with more activity planned in the near future. @ExtinctionRebellionBirmingham

The proposals include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom properties, with a range of private car parking spaces. The scheme is a key aspect of the wider New Garden Square masterplan being developed by Calthorpe Estates and U+I. Alex Neale, managing director at Court Collaboration, said: “As well as delivering stunning properties, Court Collaboration is committed to creating developments which support local communities and their economies, so we’re very much looking forward to building these new homes and working in collaboration with Calthorpe Estates as the mixed-use New Garden Square project comes forward. “Work is set to begin next spring, when we’ll be applying a range of modern construction methods to make the most of sustainable building and the highest quality product, with completion anticipated by Q2 2022.” “Calthorpe Estates are excited by the architect’s, Glancy Nicholls, innovative and landmark design for the residential scheme, which excellently complements our New Garden Square regeneration masterplan, alongside our partner U+I’s recently approved NGS1, the first commercial phase designed by Glenn Howells Architects. insidermedia.com

BREWERS SOCIAL OFFERS PEAKY BLINDER THEMED, DOG FRIENDLY GORGEOUSNESS!

LANDMARK SCHEMES CELEBRATED AT WEST MIDLANDS PROPERTY AWARDS

Sadler’s Brewing Company has announced the launch of Brewer’s Social Harborne, the third of its venues in the West Midlands.

Landmark projects such as the redevelopment of Birmingham’s Centenary Square and Stoke’s Tunstall Arrow were in the spotlight at the West Midlands Property Awards, with architecture practices, commercial developers and housebuilders across the region also celebrated.

Described as “a place to be social no matter what time of day”, Brewer’s Social is now a permanent fixture in the High Street of Harborne – after initially being a temporary pop-up restaurant.

Insider business editor Ian Griffin said it is “the most exciting time in a generation” to be involved in property in the West Midlands.

Locals can pop in any time of day for brunch, coffee and cake, lunch, dinner, craft beers, cocktails and more. The menu includes delights such as Mud City baby back ribs, smoked brisket in Sadler’s ale sauce, and truffle mac and cheese.

Billions of pounds are being pumped into our region by investors from across the UK and overseas to seize a slice of the superb opportunities which will come from an expanding Metro, Coventry City of Culture 2021, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 and HS2,” he added.

For vegetarians there’s a few options too, with crispy halloumi and mushroom, and the vegan Brewer’s salad.

EMBRACING YOUR SHAPE... Style gurus like Gok Wan and Trinny and Suzannah have talked a lot over the years about body shapes and shown us endless programs on how to dress - but do you know which body shape you are?

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, DECEMBER / JANUARY 2019/20

WHICH BODY SHAPE ARE YOU? This issue Dawn Marriott shares her expert advice on how to dress for your shape, embracing all the variety our bodies offer! Here’s my guide to the 4 basic body Shapes.

Apple

Celeb – Catherine Zeta Jones

Our bodies come under a lot of scrutiny and we are usually our own biggest critics. “My arms are too fat, my tummy too squidgy, my legs are too short” are just some of the things I hear when I’m with my clients. We can be so hard on ourselves focusing way too much on the bits we don’t like whilst forgetting about our good bits! This is why I share my knowledge on body shapes and how to dress your shape confidently with all of my clients. Understanding what shape we might be and why some things just don’t work on us is key when it comes to knowing exactly what to wear in order to feel your very best. Style gurus like Gok Wan and Trinny and Suzannah have talked a lot over the years about body shapes and shown us endless programs on how to dress - but do you know which body shape you are?

16

A slash neck or wide neck is perfect for creating balance across your slimmer shoulders. You can go wild with top details, big shoulders, puff sleeves, ruffles, embellishment you can have it all.

If you are an Apple you will carry your weight around your bust and tummy. You will probably have great legs and good bust too! Draw attention away from your middle area by layering but do avoid patterns across your tummy area where possible, a plain block of colour is way more flattering. Size up in a shirt or top, as clingy fabrics will only make you look bigger across the chest.

Going for a darker colour on your bottom half is the perfect way to balance your top half, keeping the focus on your upper body. Wider leg and boot cut trousers are ideal to add balance to your curvy hips.

Emphasise your great shape bust by opting for V-necks, plunging necklines and scoop necks, this will not only enhance your shape but also draw the eye upwards.

Try to avoid adding volume across the hips where possible, steering away from pleats, pockets and thick fabric.

A-line dresses and swing shape tops are the perfect style for you. And lastly show off your legs they are one of your best assets!

Pear

Celeb - Holly Willoughby If you are a Pear you will carry your weight on your hips and thighs. Your hips will be notably bigger than your bust. You may have a flat tummy and this must be enhanced. Ensure your dresses and tops are nipped in at the waist, Bright colours and bold prints work great on your top half.

An A line skirt or dress nipped in at the waist is perfect for showing off your shapely figure.

Rectangle Celeb - Zoe Ball

You will measure pretty much the same across your bust, waist and hips if you are a Rectangle. Your waist although it may be small usually isn’t very prominent. There are only a couple of rules here and the biggest one is to avoid anything belted. Belted garments won’t enhance having little waist definition; it will simply make you look shapeless. Dresses are best suited in a straight shift shape showing off your slim physique.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, DECEMBER / JANUARY 2019/20

FASHION

Trousers can be skinny, crop, or wide and the same goes for tops any shape will work well for you. You can create the illusion of a smaller waist by adding a tuck into your trousers or skirt, showing a glimpse of your waist drawing the eye to this smaller detail. High waisted is usually a no no too and this can make your tummy area look wide (even though its not). Instead opt for defining arm or legs (not both together), as these are usually one of your best assets.

Nipping in at your waist is the hard fast rule for you. Showing off your tiny waist is paramount. Hiding behind shapeless items of clothing will only make you look square and ultimately bigger.

accept the ones we don’t love so much is a great place to start!

Opt for V-neck, boat neck and scoop neck tops, avoiding high necks and polo necks as they can create a block feeling across your chest. Fit and flare dresses are perfect for the hourglass fitting in all the right places.

x Dawn

Hourglass

Celeb Kirstie Allsopp

Lastly the belt is your new best friend – belts on skirts, trousers, belted dresses and belted coats, highlight that tiny waist!

The Jessica rabbit shape. Your hips and bust will be of similar measurement and your waist much smaller if you are an Hourglass - highlighting your waist is key.

Just remember though that whatever shape you are, we are all different - very different, understanding your body shape and identifying your best assets along with having the confidence to

KIPPER’S SNOWY DAY Kipper’s Snowy Day is the heart-warming Christmas show at Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) this year. This Slot Machine Theatre production will be a real treat for children, showing right through until New Year’s Eve. Kipper is an all-time favourite who’s been a storybook friend to generations of children – and now starring in his own original, musical Christmas stage show, perfect for children aged 3+ and their families. Kipper and his best friend Tiger go on an adventure in the snow - but on the way they lose their friend Arnold in a terrible storm. Will they find him? And will they find their way back home? Based on the award-winning ‘Kipper’ stories by Mick Inkpen, this is the first stage adaptation of these well-loved books. This warm-hearted Christmas show is filled with original songs and music, gorgeous puppetry and gentle humour.

“Kipper’s Snowy Day is the perfect family show for Christmas, and it’s one of our favourites,” says Nick Tigg, Artistic Director at Slot Machine Theatre. “We always make shows that are really fun for a whole family to see together, so there’s plenty of silliness that will make your kids laugh as well as your granny and grandpa, plus amazing music, puppetry and adventure. “The books are beautifully illustrated - the writer Mick Inkpen is very particular about the pages of his books not being too cluttered, and we worked closely with Mick on the design and script of the show.

Tickets are selling fast! Book now to secure your spot online at macbirmingham.co.uk, or call our friendly Box Office team on 0121 446 3232. #kipperatmac

“Kipper is such a well-loved character, we wanted to be really faithful to the books, particularly as this is the first of Mick’s Kipper books ever to be adapted for the stage. And we’re very proud that Mick loves the show! “Kipper’s Snowy Day has had sell-out seasons at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, the Curve in Leicester, and the Connaught in Worthing, and we’re super-excited to bring the show to Birmingham this Christmas. We hope you love Kipper as much as we do!”

fter the depths of winter, when snowdrops first appear at the beginning of the new year, we are reminded that the hope and warmth of spring is not far away. Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston has a long held tradition of remembering lost loved ones through an annual snowdrop memorial. Judy Dyke, chairman of Tyndallwoods said: “As we move into 2020 we will hold a service in which we plant snowdrops in memory of those we have lost. This year we will remember our good friend Elaine who was an important member of the Tyndallwoods family. Through words, music and silent contemplation, we will join together in remembrance.

“Our Snowdrop Memorial Garden at Tyndallwoods provides a lasting memory that comes back year after year, reminding us of those we have lost who remain forever dear to us. Judy added: “For us here at Tyndallwoods - as with many other businesses - environmental, social and governance issues are climbing up the agenda. “In our garden at 29 Woodbourne Road we are pleased to host 5 beehives surrounded by a fruit orchard. And we are proud to be part of the Birmingham Trees for Life programme.”

SERVING UP

HAPPINESS Family bonding time for psychological wellbeing. Creating an intimate moment in the day where the family comes together and feel peaceful in each others company works wonders for the family bond. These little moments have a huge impact on the broader picture of mental wellbeing. Here are some easy and simple components to setting the tone for a beautiful family moment.

SET THE TABLE Setting the table brings family together before the food is ready, and gives you a chance to communicate without the spotlight being on any one of you.

CENTREPEICE Make it feel like you’re always celebrating with a decorative centrepiece. A small flower in a vase or small potted candles, it sounds so simple but these little touches make us feel special when we eat out, and will too when we eat in.

SERVING UP Sometimes, for no reason in particular, it’s fun to get out the fancy bowls, or perhaps just plate up the food in an unusual way to keep things interesting. Try serving up pizzas on a wooden chopping board, or popping your pasta on slate plates.

MUSIC The music shouldn’t be too disruptive to the flow of conversation but will keep the evening feeling lively and fun. There’s nothing worse than a silent restaurant, so why would a silent dining room be any different?

June receives an early

Christmas present

“It is amazing how just being able to brush your own hair can change your whole outlook on life,” according to great grandmother June Shakespeare. Eighty-four-year-old June had been gradually losing the use of her fingers over the past few years until it reached the stage where she could hardly use her hands at all. But, following surgery to reattach tendons that had become worn away by wrist arthritis June, who lives in Great Barr, has been able to grab back the many day-to-day skills that most people take for granted. “Opening doors, taking lids off jars, holding a cup or taking money from my purse – even brushing my hair, had become almost impossible. You can’t imagine just how much that impacted on my daily life,” she explained. As the condition continued to deteriorate June met with specialist hand and wrist surgeon Mr Gunaratnam Shyamalan at Spire Hospital. He explained that not only could he help her get movement back to her hands but he could also perform the surgery while she remained completely awake. He said: “Years of arthritis in the bones of her wrist meant that the tendons to her fingers had been severed or ruptured – it is not an uncommon condition in elderly patients. “What I did was use sections of healthy tendons to repair the torn ones while carrying out repairs to the badly damaged ones. I used a technique called WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet) which meant

June was able to stay awake throughout the entire operation." “Not only does this seem to put patients at their ease, it also means they don’t have to recover from the effects of a general anaesthetic which speeds up their actual recovery process.” Now, following a series of physiotherapy treatments, June is delighted to have ‘excellent movement’ back in her wrist.

She said: “The operation went very well and I was delighted to be able to chat to people in the operating theatre as Mr Shyamalan carried out his work. It really put me at ease both before and during the actual surgery. “It really is beyond my expectations to be able to do some everyday things that most people take for granted and, as a bit of a bonus, there is hardly a scar to show for the surgery he carried out.” June is delighted with the results of her wrist surgery.

NURTURING CARING CHILDREN - by Susannah Palmer, Headmistress at Norfolk House School At Norfolk House School we are firm believers that a happy and nurturing environment brings out the best in children. Keeping class sizes small, focusing on the individual needs of each child and promoting good manners and mutual respect, are among the things we do to create a close-knit, mutually supportive community with a family atmosphere. However, our community extends far beyond the school grounds. Last half term, Year 6 held a hugely successful coffee morning in aid of Macmillan, the charity that prides itself on providing physical, financial and emotional support to people who find they are suffering from cancer. Mrs Stone (Head of Art) helped Year 6 publicise the event to the whole community by decorating the façade of the school with giant cupcakes, which looked good enough to eat! This half term, Warwick Charity, led by Mrs Hifle (Head of KS1 and EYFS) and the two House Captains, Amrit and Siyam, will be encouraging the whole school to support their fundraising activities in aid of Edward’s Trust. Edward’s Trust provides holistic family bereavement services supporting children, young people and parents across the West Midlands. This time, all children in Key Stage 1 and EYFS will be making kites to decorate the school. The children in Kenilworth House have started raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Mr Champs (Head of Teaching and Learning) felt inspired to support Kenilworth House by donating money he raised by running The Birmingham Half Marathon to their charity.

Norfolk House School

Again, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the whole school community when we held our Harvest Festival led by Reverend Tomlinson, Vicar of St Augustine’s Church. These projects are just a small part of all the work our children do in the community. Throughout their time at Norfolk House, children are encouraged to think of the needs of others, whether by taking part in the choir tour of residential homes such as Ryland Place, Henbury and Hagley Village, helping Mrs Meehan keep the library tidy or by looking after the younger children at playtime. Some children have taken on their own personal challenges. Jeevan (Year 1) ran the Great Birmingham Mini Race and raised £300 for Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice. By developing this sense of community, we believe that our pupils will become supportive and charitable young people.

Rose Apple Pie

Mini rose apple pies with cinnamon & powdered sugar INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 roll shortcrust pastry 2 pink lady apples 100g brown sugar 60g unsalted butter 3 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp cinnamon 1 tbsp icing sugar

1. On a well floured surface, roll out the pastry and use a biscuit cutter or cup to cut it into small circles. Butter the cupcake dish and push your circles of dough into each hole. Chill in the fridge while preparing the filling. 2. Pre heat the oven to 190 degrees

3. Using a mandolin or very sharp knife, cut the apples to remove the core and then slice the apple into very thin half moon slices. Toss the apples with the lemon juice. 4. Melt half of the butter and combine with half of the brown sugar, and cinnamon. Toss the apples in this mixture and put in the microwave for about 1 minute (until apple is soft enough to roll). 5. Melt the remaining butter and combine with the remaining brown sugar, dust the bottom of each dough cup with this mixture.

6. To form the roses, lay about 10 apple slices on a flat surface horizontally with each overlapping the next one by half. Tightly roll from one end to the other and place into the dough cup, adding extra ‘petals’ where you see fit.

7. Put an apple rose in each cup of the muffin tin and bake for 25-30 minutes, when you remove, glaze the roses with jam and a dusting of icing sugar.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Who Died First - Does It Really Matter?

The saying goes that where there’s a Will, there’s a way. However, when it comes to succession planning, there’s a little known rule which could lead the way to complications and even a legal battle. The recent case of John and Ann Scarle, has brought into the limelight the question ‘Who died first?’. Sadly, the married couple died of hypothermia in their home in Essex in October 2006. Their bodies were not found by neighbours until a week later. Mr and Mrs Scarle owned their family home and bank account jointly. This meant that these assets passed to the survivor of them. All of this would have been fairly straightforward, had it not been for the fact that both Mr and Mrs Scarle had children from previous marriages. If Mr Scarle had died first, his share of the joint assets would have passed to his wife, and then on to her beneficiaries. If, on the other hand, Mrs Scarle had died first,

40

then her share of the joint assets would have passed to her husband and then on to his adult daughter. Determining who died first is therefore absolutely crucial to establishing who inherits the house. The Commorientes Rule When two or more people die at the same time and in circumstances where it is uncertain which one of them died first, the Law of Property Act 1925 introduces an assumption that the elder died before the younger. This is known as ‘the Commorientes rule’. This means that Mr Scarle (as the elder) would have died first. His share of the property would then be

deemed to have passed over to Mrs Scarle, and then down to her beneficiaries on her death. This order of events would clearly disinherit Mr Scarle’s daughter, who was arguing that the rule should not be applied in these circumstances. The High Court has ruled in favour of Mrs Scarle’s beneficiaries, who are now set to inherit the entire £300,000 estate. Due to a lack of scientific evidence allowing to reach a safe conclusion about who died first, the judge invoked the Commorientes rule. This means that Mr Scarle died first, so that Mrs Scarle’s beneficiaries will now inherit joint assets. Meanwhile Mr Scarle’s daughter will also face substantial costs.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Reflections on wills and lasting powers of attorney Judy Dyke, chairman and head of the private client team at Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston reflects on two key issues as the end of the year draws closer. Judy said: ”As we move towards the end of 2019 I can’t help but reflect on a busy and interesting year. “On a personal level my family has been blessed with a marriage and the safe arrival of a grandchild this year. On the bigger stage, our society has been challenged by political uncertainty which affects us all whatever our walk of life. “And what about in business terms? I am so fortunate to enjoy my work at Tyndallwoods and I want to consider two key issues: “Firstly, an area of considerable interest is the use of Lasting Powers of Attorney. These are documents of enormous power that merit professional advice. There is concern about the abuse of power given. In particular, people drawing up an LPA should seek professional advice if they wish the attorney to be able to make gifts.

If you would like any further information on Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney please contact Judy at Tyndallwoods: jdyke@tyndallwoods.co.uk Direct Line: 0121 243 3025

w www.tyndallwoods.co.uk

“We are all aware that Wills are becoming the subject of increasing challenge. This may involve challenge to the mental capacity of the testator at the time of signing the Will. Thus the importance of the role of the solicitor in certifying mental capacity is increasingly important. Careful file notes are made and retained. These may later be essential in rebutting any challenge to the Will. It is not a tick box exercise.”

THE BIRMINGHAM AWARDS 2019 On Saturday 9th November the Library of Birmingham was sparkling with red & blue – the colours of The Birmingham Awards. And we were there as a finalist! The competition was tough and the team was proud to be up against the likes of Balvinder Sidhu from ITV Central (who took home the prize for our category) and Sunny and Shay from BBC WM. This was the 5th Birmingham Awards and the organisers felt such a milestone should be marked by celebrating in one of Birminghams most iconic buildings, the Library of Birmingham. The night kicked off with a sparkling drinks reception hosted by Bottega Birmingham, in the Rotunda of the library. The organisers were proud to see so many new organisations and individuals which is a testament to their original vision. Founder Anita Chumber said: “We created the awards because we believe that a city of ambitious, vibrant & inspirational people & organisations needs a platform to highlight and celebrate the incredible work being done.” Amy Watson, managing director of The MY Magazines said: “We were thrilled to be shorlisted with such an impressive group - we feel like winners getting this far. Congratulations to Balvinder Sidhu and all of the other winners announced during the evening. A BESPOKE SHOWER AND LUXURIOUS BATH MAKE THIS FAMILY BATHROOM PERFECT Making the most of available space to create a bathroom that has room for everything can be a challenge, as was the case for Stan and Dawn. With several en-suites in their home they wanted a family bathroom with space for both a shower and a bath.

“We knew that space was limited so we were happy for Caroline to put forward her ideas,” says Dawn.

“Our neighbours had recommended Roman Bathrooms so we did not even visit the showroom, we were happy for Caroline to visit our home and prepare a design and a quote. We then went to the showroom to talk through the proposals and have a look at the displays which helped us refine the design.”

Although space was limited Roman Bathrooms were able to provide everything that Dawn and Stan wanted, a bath, spacious walk-in shower, vanity unit with a surface mounted basin and WC.

The bespoke shower is built into the back wall, next to the bath, which provides a generous area for showering. Recessed shelving in the shower and above the bath provides a neat solution for displaying everyday items. Low level lighting in the plinth of the wet deck and two generously sized mirrors keep the room bright and make it feel more spacious.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street gets insight into the fight to save Royalty Cinema “There are lots of buildings like this around the West Midlands, but here in Harborne it is clear that the community is motivated to protect it. Places like this are valuable for their architecture and heritage, but also because they represent a little bit of the soul of a community. “The challenge is often finding a viable use and business plan that will secure a future. From what I have seen, there are plenty of people in Harborne who are determined to do just that.” West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says he is ‘hugely impressed’ by efforts to save an iconic Harborne building – and the public’s determination to see it brought back into use. Mr Street, who heads up the West Midlands Combined Authority, visited the Royalty Cinema with Harborne councillor Peter Fowler to see first-hand the challenges faced by the Grade II listed former cinema and bingo hall on the High Street. Mr Street said: “I wanted to come along and see the Royalty so I could fully understand the challenges that it faces, but also to get a clear feel for the way it is viewed by local people. I have to say I was impressed.

50

Built in 1930 to the designs of Horace G Bradley, the building was listed for its special architectural qualities, which include art deco features. It became a bingo hall in the 1960s but has stood empty in recent years. The Harborne Royalty Trust was set up by local volunteers with the intention of not only securing the future of the building but turning it into multi-use community facility. However, the disused building has been plagued by vandalism and fires. A survey carried out by the Trust, and funded by Birmingham City Council through a Local Innovation Fund grant, found that 90% of local people

want to see the Royalty restored as a community facility, while 93% believed a restored listed building can add to the vitality of a High Street. Mr Street said: “It’s clear from the impressive work carried out by the Harborne Royalty Trust that this building has a special place in the hearts of local people and that they are keen to find an acceptable new use for it. “It was fascinating to see the building and hear about the work that is being done to carve out a future use for it – because it not only gave me a glimpse of Harborne’s past, it also gave me an insight into how energised the local community is today.” Earlier this year the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) agreed to provide £4,520 to pay for a Conservation Accredited Architect to prepare a Heritage Statement and Impact Assessment to accompany any proposals for the restoration and redevelopment of the Royalty. The statement will provide valuable information about what can and should be saved and restored at the Royalty. Keep up to date at

YOUR WINTER GARDEN

It’s the season of goodwill, with Christmas just around the corner and 2020 knocking on our door.

HOME & GARDEN

GARDENING TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS at Birmingham Botanical Gardens Even though daylight is reduced, there are jobs you can do in the garden, even in the depths of winter. Here are some tasks to consider:

* * *

We’ve had a lot of rain recently, so you may have noticed if you need to improve drainage and aeration in your garden. If you do, spike your lawns with a garden fork. If we get a mild, dry period, it’s fine to continue cutting the lawn but just make sure that the mower blades are raised.

If, like us, you’ve been cleaning up the shed and greenhouse, you might have noticed that some of your tools aren’t as good as they once were. So, if you haven’t made your festive wishlist yet, you may want to drop hints about replenishing some of them! You can never have too many pairs of good gardening gloves. If and when the weather’s really bad – sometimes even the hardiest of gardeners prefer to stay inside with a cup of tea – have a browse through the gardening catalogues to see if there are any flowers or shrubs that take your fancy for next year. And if you’re a vegetable grower, plan your scheme so that you introduce essential crop rotation.

There’s still some pruning to be done: fruit trees, climbing roses, acers and wisterias can all be pruned in December. Leave any faded hydrangea flower heads, though, as they provide protection for the new buds.

* * *

You can also take hardwood cuttings from dogwood, mock orange, viburnum and climbers including honeysuckle in December. In January, make sure your pots and tools are all clean, ready for the new gardening season (if you haven’t done them already). Start to force rhubarb – just think of the amazing crumble you can make!

* * * *

Tidy up the old stems on perennials, but be careful not to disturb new growth. Deadhead winter pansies to stop them setting seed. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses to about a few centimetres from the ground. Make sure you keep your bird feeders topped up with much-needed nutritional goodies, including fat balls and seeds. They really need our help at this time of year. Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2020! Here’s to a great gardening year.

LIGHT UP YOUR

LIFE

When the days are so short and gloomy, lighting up our homes in beautiful ways becomes more important than ever to happy home life. Here are some tips inspired by the lives of our incredible ancestors, the hunter gatherers... - Written by Ruby Prosser

HOME & GARDEN

LET IT GLOW FIRE

DAWN TILL DUSK

Such an alluring element, fire is undeniably inviting! What kind of idyllic winter-home scene is complete without a fire to huddle around?

The sun was once our wake up call, a great ally in the midday hunt, and our timepiece to help get us to safety before dark. Our connection to the sun is still embedded in our consciousness which is why we should endevour to follow its lead as much as we can.

Fireplaces offer more for our inner primal being than we give them credit for, they’re our natural focal point for social gatherings. Our species has spent more time as hunter gatherers than doing anything else, for nearly 2 million years! It was when we were at our most connected within our societies from time spent huddled together around the fire at night, gossiping about the day’s events. We’d do well to bring that into our living spaces.

60

Low, soft lighting eases us into the day with table lamps and ground level spotlights. Mid level lighting ushers it in further with floor lamps and low hanging ceiling lights. Bright overhead lighting brings us to the sun’s apex with warm spotlights and bright ceiling lamps. And then the day slowly eases back down to sunset. If we want to wake up gently, be productive and alert through the day, and feel relaxed and ready for sleep in the evening, this is how we tell our bodies.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, DECEMBER / JANUARY 2019/20

SETTING SUN After sun set is such an important time for family, especially in winter when daylight is so limited. With the lifestyle of our ancestors in mind (as speculative as it is!), the low peaceful glow of fires would light the evening, the smells of cooking on the fire would fill the air, and even the distant twinkling of the stars and white light of the moon would be shining down. We can create this kind of effect in our homes with festive lighting! The twinkling of the candles, the warmth and delicious smells radiating from the oven, and the gentle effervescence of a gorgeous lantern hanging from the ceiling!
