If they could, they would - a better understanding of ADHD

My name is Annette Ingrid, and I am a Family Coach with an in-depth understanding of ADHD. I am working with either parents who have a child with ADHD or adults who have ADHD themselves. My mission as an ADHD Coach is supporting people and families forward from where they are now to where they want to be.

ADHD seems to “run in families”. It is a brain disorder that has a number of different causes, including genetic factors. When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, there is a strong possibility that it will be found in other blood relatives too. Studies show that ADHD has a high heritability of around 70-80%.

If you have a child with ADHD, you may experience life as a bit of a roller-coaster because of the manifestation of ADHD. It may take forever to get out the door every morning with them, and you might find it challenging that they have no concept of time even though you

provide minute countdowns. It may make you upset that they lose homework assignments before they get home. It might feel like entering a war with them all the time about household responsibilities, and you try to understand why they give up if something is hard or challenging.

Many parents who raise a child with ADHD experience high levels of stress and lose control over their temper sometimes, which can result in them saying things they are not proud of. It is common to get negative comments about a child’s behaviour from a family member or another parent. Or being frequently called by a teacher to discuss the child’s disruptive behaviour in class. There are social stigmas that come with ADHD, and most people do not understand that it is not caused by poor parenting or a chaotic home environment.

You are not alone with these experiences, and I understand you! You know how much impact you have on the child’s development as a parent.

That is why you read articles about how the ADHD brain works and why your child is struggling to clean their room, complete tasks or find friends.

I, as an ADHD Family Coach, collaboratively work together with parents to strengthen family dynamics, improve relationships, be able to enjoy parenting and create a happy home.

What I am offering is not another therapy. It is a practical, goal oriented approach. If you join my program I can also teach you how to be your child’s coach. You will learn by listening to your child’s own experiences, as well as coaching skills that you can use to engage and guide them.

Moseley Chiropractic Studio

Access is shared with Moseley Tennis Club on Billesley Lane. The Moseley Chiropractic Studio is found at the end of the tennis club drive. “I am allowing more time for patients since Covid, and that helps with the unhurried calm approach that I favour. Patients want to be heard, understood and want clear explanations with detailed advice. It is great to be still enjoying my work after 26 years as a chiropractor.”

Kevin Grant has moved his chiropractic practice to the new Moseley Chiropractic Studio. “My patients tell me that they love the tranquil setting under the trees, next to Moseley Tennis Club,’” said Kevin. He also said how much he is enjoying the calm atmosphere, “I believe it helps the therapeutic process. Although most patients come with back pain, the treatment seems to be appreciated better when there is a relaxed atmosphere. I hear the sounds of my chickens gently cooing and the occasional call of a tennis player, as the soundtrack to my work and not the noise from traffic.” The studio is a wooden chalet style building with all the necessary modern facilities that stays cool in the summer and is cosy in the winter.

Kevin also uses Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy, which is an effective treatment for a range of conditions such as tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and handily for the tennis players, tennis elbow! Shockwave is ideal alongside chiropractic. Chiropractic focuses on structural balance issues. Injuries treatable with shockwave, often disturb the structural balance. “It is a great way to really get to the nub of a problem that may have been niggling for years,” said Kevin.

Kevin has been helped to set up the studio by his wife Barbara, who has been a chiropractor for over 40 years.

Whilst Barbara is not practising at the moment, she instigated the preparation of the studio during the Covid lockdown.

Plantar Fasciitis - by Happy Hill, Chiropodist I bet you’ve googled heel pain, and been diagnosed with this!

Plantar Fasciitis is a very common complaint at some point in people’s lives. More common in women, and can occur at any age.

In our foot we have a taut, thin piece of muscle that inserts into the heel bone (calcaneus) and runs up through the arch of your foot, then splits into 5 and inserts into to the metatarsal joints that make up the ‘ball’ of your foot.

Plantar Fasciitis occurs when you overuse, or overstretch this muscle repetitively, whether it’s a change in weight, exercise, or a change in footwear.

MAYOR WELCOMES £15MILLION CASH FOR HISTORIC MOSELEY ROAD BATHS West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has welcomed £15.5 million in funding to regenerate Moseley Road Baths, the city’s historic swimming pool.

The huge sum of money for the much-loved historic baths is one of 11 smaller projects across the West Midlands to share in £196 million of funding announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his budget.

The funding, from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, comes on top of a separate grant of £100,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund.

Mr Street, who leads the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Moseley Road Baths has been given this significant sum of money in the budget, which will help ensure this brilliant facility for future generations.

“I have always said that Moseley Road Baths is a perfect example of how social enterprises are helping local communities to thrive, and the many local people who have campaigned to save it over the years deserve huge credit.”

The baths is a Grade II* Edwardian swimming pool which opened in Balsall Heath in 1907 and, according to Historic England, is the oldest surviving swimming facility of its kind currently operating in Britain. However, they have been on the Heritage at Risk Register for many years.

Moseley Road Baths Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) took over the day-to-day running of the historic building in 2018 to save it from closure, with the support of Birmingham City Council. Trustees of this social enterprise are members of the local community and regular swimmers at the pool.

Since then the CIO has been working with the Friends of Moseley Road Baths, Historic England, the National Trust and the World Monuments Fund, focusing on keeping the pool open for swimming conservation-led building works to halt deterioration, and developing a masterplan that will secure the long-term future of the baths.

He said: “This new funding will allow us to kickstart the next phase of the Hagley Road metro line – looking at detailed planning and building a business case to extend it further and serve more communities in Edgbaston, Harborne and Quinton.

“After an incredibly challenging 18 months, the Chancellor has today delivered a budget that will make a real difference to people’s lives in the West Midlands.”

Birmingham St Mary’s and John Taylor Hospices ‘Treecycling’ campaign will see volunteers collect thousands of used Christmas trees from across South and West Birmingham, North Birmingham and Solihull.

If you are a client of Tyndallwoods, chances are you have spoken to Sarah or Victoria Smith on the phone on many occasions, so we felt it high time they were introduced properly!

The Twins

Spotlighting the faces behind the telephone voices.

Sarah and Victoria are sisters, twins in fact, and between them they have been with Tyndallwoods an impressive 50 years and they wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. This is their life. The family that is Tyndallwoods take mutual support as seriously as they take client care.

And this is an environment in which the twins have been able to thrive. They love the team spirit, and the charity work, as well as the satisfaction of knowing they are playing important roles in providing an excellent personal service to their clients.

Sarah joined Tyndallwoods in 1994 and has worked in several roles within the firm. She is currently a secretary supporting colleagues in conveyancing and litigation. She is a self taught

excellent touch typist and an amazing cross stitcher. A passion which she shares with Victoria. She also loves baking and gardening and is the supplier of the seeds for the annual Tyndallwoods tallest sunflower competition. Sarah said: “I love what I’m doing, I’ve enjoyed working in lots of different roles here... accounts, conveyancing, costings, office junior, post room. It’s all about being with people you like. I feel comfortable and happy here.”

Victoria works in the accounts team doing various jobs including managing the purchase ledger, dealing with land registry statements, bills and transfers, and taking care of bacs payments. She joined the firm in 1998. Victoria said: “I love the variety. Things vary from day to day. I get on well with people and enjoy all aspects

of the job. Sometimes it gets really busy coming up to month end, but other times are more relaxed and steady. There’s always some kind of charity project going on which is really rewarding to be part of. We love getting involved in cake baking for Children in Need and doing things for Comic Relief.”

Judy Dyke, who heads up the private client team at Tyndallwoods said: “Sarah and Victoria are so important to the inner workings of Tyndallwoods. The huge amount of support they provide for the team enable the client facing colleagues to focus on their own roles and so as a company we can provide a seamless service. SANTA’S SENSATIONAL CHRISTMAS COOKIE RECIPE You may not know this, but Santa can be a bit fussy when it comes to sweet snacks! Luckily, we managed to swipe this super tasty recipe from one of his elves, and we want to share it with you!

METHOD

(Makes about 30)

Grease two baking trays. Beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy, then beat in treacle and egg. Fold in the combined sifted flours, spices and bicarbonate of soda. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.

Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 140g butter cubed and softened 115g brown sugar 90g treacle 1 egg 250g plain flour 30g self raising flour 3 teaspoons ground ginger 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Icing 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice a splash of water 125g icing sugar assorted food colourings writing icing for the finishing touches!

Divide the dough into two halves and roll out between two sheets of lightly floured baking paper to a 4mm thickness. Lay the dough on the trays and chill for 15 mins until just firm. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Cut out the dough using your Christmas themed cutters. Lay on the trays with a small gap between each shape, and bake for 10 minutes. Leave for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.

To make icing, sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in lemon juice and a dash of water. Divide up the icing into separate bowls to make your different colours and add a small splash of the food colouring at a time to get the desired shade. Then spoon into piping bags, seal the end, cut off the tip and decorate the biscuits.

Martineau Gardens receives the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Martineau Gardens is open Monday to Saturday, 10am until 4pm for visits and is free to enter.

One of the longest running Community Gardens in Birmingham, Martineau Gardens, has been recognised for its commitment to the community, receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. Awarded during lockdown when gatherings were not possible, representatives of Martineau Gardens received the award from John Crabtree, OBE, Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, on Sunday 17 October at the awards ceremony at Birmingham Hippodrome.

Martineau Gardens supports volunteers on the therapeutic horticulture programme to look after the 2.5 acre free-to-enter community garden, many of whom have mental health issues and learning disabilities.

A team of volunteers welcome over 10,000 visitors each year who come to enjoy its peace and tranquillity and a further team helps out with special events and courses.

Hundreds of school children visit the outdoor ‘classrooms’ to learn about the environment. The Gardens have been described by visitors as ‘an oasis of calm in the bustling city’ and as ‘Birmingham’s hidden gem’ – all thanks to the dedication of the wonderful volunteers.

Martineau Gardens, Edgbaston, Birmingham is one of 230 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations remains high year on year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

When the City Council-run environmental centre closed, a group of local people came together to create a community garden that would stay open for free, for the public of Birmingham to visit and care for.

Established in 1997 as a volunteer-led organisation, today Martineau Gardens is a thriving independently-run registered charity.

Claire Perry, volunteer at the Gardens for over ten years said “Martineau Gardens means the world to me, to be around nature makes me calm and happy. I came here to boost my confidence, and now I’m here, I feel I’ve come out of the darkness and into the light.”

Munsab Kahn, volunteer at the Gardens said “Volunteering has given me a role - there was a massive hole in my life but when I began volunteering here, I could see there was light at the end of the tunnel.”

Gill Milburn, outgoing CEO for Martineau Gardens said “We are delighted and honoured to receive the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. Volunteers are the beating heart of Martineau Gardens. Whether supporting our work week in week out, or rising to the challenge when needed, each one makes a difference.

The Award is testament to hundreds of volunteers past and present, who have given selflessly to care for our beautiful community space. We look forward to being able to have everyone back at the Gardens for a well-deserved celebration.”

Birmingham Hippodrome announce cast of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

After a year of absence, Birmingham Hippodrome will be bringing Pantomime back to the city with Goldilocks and the Three Bears from Saturday 18 December, and have announced the exciting cast line-up who will be joining Jason Donavon in his panto debut and Birmingham Panto favourite Matt Slack.

The UK’s biggest regional panto follows Dame Betty Barnum and her daughter Goldilocks’, who are battling to save their Big Top circus from the Evil Ringmaster who is intent on stealing their three loveable bears and leave them in ruin.

Alongside Jason – who will be playing the Evil Ringmaster – and Matt as Ringmaster will be Doreen Tipton as Doreen the Lion Tamer, Andrew Ryan as Dame Betty Barnum, Alexia McIntosh as Candy Floss and Samantha Dorrance as Goldilocks.

Chief Executive of Crossroads Pantomimes, Michael Harrison, said: “I am really delighted to be announcing so many returning cast today alongside the addition of local Midlands’s talent in the form of Alexia and Samantha.”

Michael, who will be producing and directing Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the Hippodrome added: “The audiences are going to truly love Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the first circus-themed pantomime at the Hippodrome for 24 years! The show will incorporate the very best of the production I created for the sell-out London Palladium panto in 2019, alongside lots of new material created especially for our Birmingham cast and audience.”

Alongside the headline cast, the Hippodrome have also revealed a spectacular line-up of circus acts including the magnificent magician Phil Hitchcock, awe-inspiring motorcycle act Peter Pavlov and The Globe of Speed, the Death-Defying Gemini Sisters and international circus artist Pierre Marchand.

This will be the first pantomime back in the Hippodrome since the venue recently reopened after almost 18 months of closure.

CUTTINGS POTTED Anyone who has received a plant as a gift and hasn’t squealed like a happy little child is a person I do not understand. Plants are adorable. So personally I think this is an awesome idea. Regular gifting of plants is something we all need to happen.

Well, then you already know that keeping money in the the local economy is better for the planet as independent shops have a teeny tiny carbon footprint, and they also keep money circulating amongst the people who need it.

So if you were waiting for a sign that you need to have a nose around your local independents, this is it!

MODERN HEIRLOOMS Buying in a planet conscious way can also mean choosing based on longevity. And while it’s not always possible, we should choose the gift that will last, and be loved by many.

Passed from mother to child, father to son, and become practically a family heirloom. So, be it a ride on toy for your toddler, or a garden bench for your dad, it’s kinder to the planet (and to your pocket in the long run!) to find one that is well made, sturdy and wont need throwing away in a couple of years! *Handy tip* sometimes charity

AN ARTIST’S IMPRESSION This is the one I’ve loved to do the most. Paintings, posters, mosaics, I’ve done all sorts over the years, and gifted them to friends. And while it has always felt like quite a vulnerable thing to do, to create something with your own hands (and ask someone to share in your imagined reality that it is in fact art!?) it has all the elements that make a gift special. Sometimes it can be an ongoing joke, a failed attempt at a likeness, or a Phoebe (from Friends) esc nightmare creation! But it is the type of gift that tightens the bonds of friendship, because it’s thoughtful, creative, it took time, it took love and you bared a bit of your soul.
