Second issue back and we are really starting to feel like we’re making it through the wilderness! Not gonna start singing the song yet though, still a few hurdles to cross.

We want to welcome in Autumn, enthusiastically! You’ll see what I mean as you flick through. It’s a gorgeous time of year, and as the landscape turns orange and brown, our lives are continuing to blossom from their somewhat doment state. I mean, there are events in our what’s on page! We feel very lucky to have such a wonderful community rallying around us, for our regular customers to have returned to our pages, and some very generously sponsoring editorial pages, giving us every chance to come back in a lasting way. LOCAL TEEN INSPIRATION Hi, my name is Jeremy Maclean and I’m a 16 year old triathlete from Moseley.

My journey in triathlon started just under 2 years ago when I set the long term goal for myself of doing an Ironman triathlon in my late teens.

It wasn’t until the February of 2020 that I started training with my coach Damion Littlewood. The trust in the process mentality was what I swore by and just seeing the rapid gains I made out the gate spurred me on even more.

Joining local clubs such as Gorilla Coffee CC and Birmingham Running Athletics and Triathlon has also been instrumental in my journey. This has allowed me to meet so many more people in my local community who share my same interests... and great coffee!

Local bereavement charity wins national award for innovation

OUR STORY...

Local family bereavement charity Edward’s Trust wins Innovation award for their wellbeing work from ScottishPower Foundation.

One of the services that make Edward’s Trust unique is their wellbeing service, which includes therapeutic massage, aromatherapy, reiki as well as the more traditional talking therapy of counselling.

During the pandemic when hands-on wellbeing treatment was not permissible, they came up with an innovative approach to their wellbeing support that has been nationally recognized by the ScottishPower Foundation.

‘Take A Moment’ was a way of providing wellbeing support safely. It consisted of a wellbeing pack that included a stress ball, herbal tea, lavender soap and other aids to relaxation. This was accompanied by the offer of socially distanced outdoor or online wellbeing support in the shape of yoga, a health check-up, mindful walking or personal training.

Melanie Hill, Executive Officer and Trustee, ScottishPower Foundation says, ‘‘We’re proud that with the help of

the ScottishPower Foundation, Edward’s Trust will be able to provide crucial support to families facing loss and bereavement. The help Edward’s Trust offers to teachers and the toolkits created to enable them to assist children and teenagers going through the most difficult of times is invaluable.

I’m pleased our funding will support the charity in its outstanding work to help young people in the West Midlands.’

Yvonne Gilligan Chief Executive of Edward’s Trust says, “We know from 31 years of experience supporting those who have been bereaved that our physical health is inextricably linked with our emotional health and in a time when people’s wellbeing has been particularly challenged due to lockdowns and social isolation. ‘Take a Moment’ has been particularly valued by our families and we are delighted that this project has been recognized by the Scottish Power Foundation and thank them for the support of our work.

It costs over £580,000 for Edward’s Trust to provide our bereavement services to the thousands of families we support each year. In order to do this, we rely on the generosity of our supporters, foundations and Trusts.

Edward’s Trust was founded by Peter and Hilary Dent in 1989 in memory of their son, Edward, who died of cancer when he was 7 years old.

Over the past 31 years Edward’s Trust has evolved from an organisation providing home from home accommodation in Birmingham, for families who had a seriously ill child in hospital, to what it is today – a holistic bereavement support service for bereaved parents, children and carers across the West Midlands.

The Trust offers support through counselling and a ‘Wellbeing in Bereavement’ service that includes complementary therapies.

Edward’s Trust also provides specialist support groups and social activities as part of its holistic bereavement support service. We are building our face to face support back up but also continuing to offer all our services online or via telephone support.

A MODERN BATHROOM FOR A GEORGIAN HOME When Bob and Lynda wanted to renovate their bathroom, they made it a family affair, choosing Roman Bathrooms after several other family members had recommended them.

Their beautiful listed Georgian home was never built with a bathroom, so the space they had to renovate was not ideal, having been formed out of a few smaller rooms some years ago.

“The long and narrow room, was making it difficult for us to have the products and layout we wanted,” says Bob. “As the room is the main bathroom in our home we wanted the luxury of a bath and the practicality of a shower. Caroline’s design solved all of the issues, moving around the previous arrangements to accommodate the spacious, freestanding style bath with a shower over.”

Sometimes, commonly with warts on the hands, the virus can spontaneously disappear. When on the feet, because they are consistently irritated by pressure and wear and tear, the plantar warts are encouraged to grow and become more keratinous and uncomfortable, and rarely resolve without intervention.

Verrucas or plantar warts are part of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as are warts on hands. We are trained and insured to treat both areas.

A verruca is classified as a “Benign Epithelial Tumour.” Although a verruca may sometimes feel very deep, it never grows deeper than the epithelial layer, and your immunoreceptor cells sit in a different layer below, and so consequently remain unaware of the viral presence.

The basis of any treatment is basically to cause damage to the viral mass (the verruca) and controlled damage to healthy tissue, and to break down the barrier between the two layers, so that the viral fragments can fall into the immunoreceptor cells. This then should trigger your immune system into making antibodies, and fighting the virus.

So, if you have a verruca, and have tried everything, and really want to get rid of it, do get in touch!

What lies around the corner?

- by Judy Dyke, Tyndallwoods Solicitors I reflected on my article last month exploring ‘Zoom or face to face?’ as we move towards the new normal.

The pandemic has taught us that none of us knows what lies around the corner, especially when it comes to our health.

Clients have consulted us in relation to making their Wills or updating existing Wills. They have also considered setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) for Property and Financial Affairs and also separately Health and Welfare LPAs. The Property and Finance LPA enables you to appoint someone to make decisions in such financial matters, acting in your best interests. Your attorney needs to be someone you trust as they will have access to your finances and savings, even to manage your bank accounts. Without an LPA in place, managing someone’s finances is far harder and can become very costly and time consuming in the long run.

The Health and Welfare LPA enables the appointed attorney to make decisions about your medical care and can give authority to make decisions in relation to life-sustaining treatment. This is vitally important in terms of ensuring you continue to receive the best level of care possible. And where difficult decisions are concerned, such as a request not to resuscitate, they are very useful in reducing anxiety in an upsetting situation.

Over the years we have developed an Advance Statement that we can then tailor to your particular circumstances and proves very helpful to the attorneys.

INGREDIENTS 3 tbsp pumpkin puree (or a small baking pumpkin and follow puree making steps below) 400ml milk (or vanilla almond milk for vegans) 2 tsp honey (or maple syrup for vegans) 1 sprinkle cinnamon 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, ginger & nutmeg) 1/2 tsp vanilla espresso shot (or small coffee) Whipped cream (optional)

METHOD PUMPKIN PUREE: 1. Cut the pumpkin in half, remove the seeds and pulp. Place the halves cut-side down onto baking paper and roast until the flesh is soft and coming off the skin.

2. Once the pumpkin has been roasted, peel the skin off and put the flesh into a food processor, and whizz it up! Should keep for up to 5 days in the fridge.

PUMPKIN SPICED LATTE You can now make THE best pumpkin spiced latte at home in less than 10 minutes! It’s healthy, it’s homemade and it’s the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season.

3. (Optional step!) For a stronger pumpkin flavour you can simmer the puree in a saucepan until it has reduced down by 1/3.

PUMPKIN LATTE: 1. Start by heating the milk, pumpkin puree, honey, pumpkin pie spices, and vanilla extract on the hob for a few minutes.

2. Then mix with the coffee. Divide it between two mugs and add whipped cream. Simple, quick, and delicious!

YOU WILL NEED: • 1 Wire coat hanger or a ready-made stick wreath.

• Lots of autumn treasures; twigs, leaves, berries, whatever you can gather without disturbing living plants.

MAKING THE WREATH This part will require adult supervision.

Also, it may get a bit messy so you may want to sit out in the garden to make the wreath.

1. Bend your wire coat hanger into a circle, keeping the hook intact. Tie handfuls of twigs around the metal wire to create the basis of your wreath. Or buy a ready made twig wreath.

2. Trim what you have gathered into manageable sized cuttings ready to decorate the wreath.

3. Pick out small handfuls of your leaves or berries or whatever you have gathered and tuck them into the twigs, tieing them in with string.

MAYOR’S BID FOR CASH TO EXTEND HAGLEY ROAD METRO LINE

The Tube -style map that sets ou Street’s vi sion for th e region’s t Andy transport network in 2040 Andy Street visiting the first stretch of Metro line on the Hagley Road, which is due for completion soon.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says a bid for a share of more than £2billion Government cash can kickstart the next stage of the Metro line along Hagley Road.

Mr Street leads the West Midlands Combined Authority, which has approved bids to the Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement fund and Bus Service Improvement Plan fund, which could secure investment of around £2 billion over the next five years.

He said: “Since I became Mayor, spending on transport has increased seven-fold, and this latest bid will provide funding to take our plans forward to provide a world-class network for the region.

“The progress we have made so far is there for all to see. Wolverhampton’s new station is now open, Coventry’s is about to join it and there are many more to follow – including Perry Barr in Birmingham, which will serve the Commonwealth Games.

“The Metro extension on the Hagley Road is set to open this year and our teams are powering ahead with brand

new routes through Sandwell into Dudley and in Birmingham linking the whole network with HS2.

Mr Street said: “This bid for transport funding will enable our region to complete some of the huge projects we have already started, but also to crack on with other exciting developments to the network, which will create opportunities for local people, bring in investment and help us achieve our green ambitions too.

“We’re talking about new cycle routes, charging points for electric cars across the region and ensuring lower fares on greener, better buses.

“Starting to explore how the Metro can extend further along the Hagley Road is another big step towards competing my transport plan.”

LOCAL INDIE CAFE ROUND-UP It’s here! Finally. That cosy, kicking up leaves, cafe dwelling time of year. Some of us have been waiting a while for this, and I’ll tell you why.

It’s mystical. It’s magical. It feels like a rom-com! So in true MY Magazine fashion we wanted to shout about some of our local independents, which happen to be great places to soak in the season (and the coffee!).

Kicking off with the gorgeous (and incredibly well hidden) The Milkcake Man. Locacated on that little allyway next to the church on Kings Heath High Street, this cafe serves amazing interior decor as well as delicious cakes, milkshakes icecreams and more.

You know a place has got to be good if there are queues out the door, and there very often is at The Earlybird Bakery!

The presentation of their sweet and savoury foods is honestly a work of art.

Everything is baked daily in house, often useing locally sourced ingredients.

The Milkcake Man has been getting some fantastic reviews online, and it’s not surprising with such a uniquely dazzling menu of desserts! I bet you never even knew you needed a candyfloss tree planted in a delicious two tone ice cream, but good luck trying to live without one now!

The Earlybird Bakery truely is an experience whether you eat in or take out, well worth a trip to the highstreet.

Whether you pop up for lunch and a cake or just to grab a pastry on the go, you will certainly be spoilt for choice by the wonderful range on offer.

On a scale of ‘entirely hidden’ to ‘practically in Narnia’, this place would rate at ‘a myth’. But luckily, it’s one of those myths that is very much a real, tangible place! Just above Grace + James (another fabulous local spot) is a place they call ‘Upstairs’. Legend has it they serve spectacular breakfast, brunch, lunch and evening food, as well as a particularly impressive sunday roast.

Lyons Boatyard, established in 1958, is a peaceful haven tucked away at the back of Kings Heath on the Stratford-upon-Avon canal. It’s so hidden that lots of people don’t even know we’re here. But we definitely are! And we love to see new people. We pride ourselves on being a friendly family-run business and offer a number of services which might appeal to local people. These include our lovely day-hire boat which can be self driven or skippered and makes for a really good day out. Especially great for birthdays, anniversaries or just a relaxed day on the canal.

Opening hours: Tuesday - Saturday 9am - 5pm changing to 10am - 4pm when the clocks change for the winter.
