Will the turkey be alright?

Barbara Nice, Kings Heath’s beloved home-grown comedy housewife, is crossing her fingers and toes this year for the turkey to be alright.

“I try a different technique every year”, she says “last year I cooked it upside down by accident and it turned out fine so I’ll be doing that again.

“It is nice to be at home on Christmas day isn’t it? Although there is quite a lot of washing up.

The Wetherspoons in Kings Heath has a big appeal - but they are already booked up on Christmas Day so I’ll be at home again this year.

Instead of the spoons doing my washing up I’ll be washing up my own spoons.

“I always say it is good to shop local at Christmas. That way you don’t have far to go when you want to return anything. You don’t even have to get on the number 50 bus let alone try and work out how to post something back to Amazon.”

My Moseley and

Kings Heath This wonderful part of Birmingham is home to people from all walks of life who experience it in many different ways. This issue we hear from Ben Colleran, age 13, a pupil at Bishop Challoner Catholic College, who tells us about his own version of Moseley and Kings Heath.

I am writing from my English classroom in Bishop Challoner Catholic College; I have had a tiring day but am relieved because half-term has finally arrived. It is great going to a school in Kings Heath because all my favourite shops are only an arm’s length away: Off the Scale, Maison Mayci and Blue Ginger. I love Off the Scale’s diverse range of clothes from flares to floral trousers and the stunning prices!

The most special idiosyncrasy of Moseley is the beautiful architecture manifested in Cambridge, Greenhill, Woodville, Prospect and Oxford Road. Some houses have gables or fake facades while some have hand crafted cornices.

My favourite, however, is Clarence road. Every time I walk through it my heart skips a beat.

Another attribute of Kings Heath is the expansive variety of restaurants and cafes such as Maison Mayci, Blue Ginger and Carters. All of these places share one thing in common: they produce highly delectable food and drink, ranging from delicious patisseries to Chinese sausage. One of my oldest memories is of ordering a pear and lime tart on a wintry morning in Maison Mayci - I can still remember the taste.

Regardless of all these great things, by far the best part of Kings Heath is Bishop Challoner.

This secondary school is situated on Institute Road. It specialises in sports and art but my favourite subjects are mathematics and science (physics to be specific).

Birmingham ladies declared “masters of the

There will be a change at the helm for Warwickshire next season as Dougie Brown departs.

What did he do wrong? Maybe that glorious season of 1994 hung like a spectre over him with memories of being a matter of minutes away from winning the grand slam!

The hot gossip is around the return of Ashley Giles, a man who may be tiring of life in a Manchester flat and of managing a painfully inconsistent Lancashire team, who only just survived relegation. With a home in the Midlands, contract negotiations will be key for Ashley Giles, but no one is closer to Edgbaston in spirit.

I should have sought the views of Jonathan Trott when we met at Euston Station in September. It was a remarkable encounter involving the tie I was wearing. As I walked towards him, having never met previously, he looked up and said; “Did you go to Bishop’s Stortford College?” It transpired that as a South African

schoolboy he had played against my old school and never forgotten the school colours which he said he always liked.

On a recent visit to Birmingham’s MAC and without a taxi in sight, I hopped on the number 45 bus back to the station and was able to get a good view of the redesigned Edgbaston ground. What a remarkable piece of architecture!

A recent Nobel Prize winner once wrote; “The Times They Are A Changin,” and Bob Dylan’s link with Warwickshire is forever, thanks to Robert George Dylan Willis, one of his greatest fans…

A great Moseley cartoonist remembered His name is not known by many, but Moseley cartoonist Bert Hackett deserves to be remembered as one of Britain’s great cartoonists.

In 40 years of cartooning for The Birmingham Post in its days as the leading West Midlands regional daily newspaper, Bert, who died in April, produced some 11,000 cartoons under the pseudonym Gemini before he finally returned aged 75 in 2008.

“Bert Hackett’s major cartoons retain a prophetic resonance,“ says Ross. The Chilcot report finally publishing this year completely vindicated Bert’s memorable 2003 cartoon showing Tony Blair recklessly staking everything on Iraq at a roulette table.

During the summer, mac Birmingham as a tribute repeated its successful exhibition displaying 130 of his works, originally staged to mark his 80th birthday.

“The habits of his newspaper days remained until those final months when illness finally took its toll,” recalls Ross. “Invariably most evenings he would find his way to the pub for a pint of his favourite ale after 10pm, which was when he finally got back to Moseley after ending his evening’s work for the Post.”

As a follow-up to the exhibition, former Birmingham Post feature writer Ross Reyburn along with Bert’s daughter Rosie Hackett, a successful London based designer, has produced a superb booklet titled The Gemini Years - The Career of Cartoonist Bert Hackett (1933-2016) detailing why Bert ranks as one of the country’s leading post-war cartoonists. It is available to purchase at mac Birmingham and Village news on St Mary’s Row, Moseley.

It’s fascinating listening to her animatedly recalling that special time when the night ended with a walk across the Palace Gardens with Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Peter Kay and Tom Hanks’ daughter, the Royals having gone to bed many hours earlier.

Before injuring her knee, Ruby enjoyed playing badminton in the little spare time she treasured, and still belongs to a local Solihull club, participating socially with quizzes and curry evenings. She can sometimes be seen with her 76 year-old mum, enjoying Touchwood’s shops.

Ruby is currently touring with The Jools Holland Orchestra. And it’s her continuous travelling that cements Ruby’s decision to live in Shirley.

The Birmingham Cook Book A new cook book has been published which celebrates the culinary delights of Birmingham. Here’s a recipe from the book, showcasing the talents of the hugly sucessful Miss Macaroon.

Lightly fold almond meal into shell mixture while gradually adding whipped egg whites, being careful not to over mix and beat out too much air.

Place mix in a piping bag fitted with a plain 7mm piping nozzle and pipe perfect circles onto lined baking tray.

Leave for 20 minutes to form a skin, the duration will depend on what time of year it is due to room temperature and humidity. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 150°C.

Bake macaroons for 11 minutes. Make the ganache by boiling the cream in a small pan, while gently stirring to avoid it catching on the pan.

Place white chocolate in a heatproof bowl and pour hot cream onto white chocolate and mix quickly to melt the chocolate. Add compound and mix until incorporated. Cool in fridge until it is of piping consistency.

To make compote, put the sugar in a pan and enough water to dissolve it.

Heat on high heat until it comes to a rolling boil, then add blueberries. Cook until fully broken down, should take about ten minutes. Cool in fridge.

Method You will need a sugar thermometer to make the macaroon shells. Recipe makes 35.

Line heavy baking tray with baking parchment.

To make the shells, mix the water and granulated sugar in a pan and set over full heat.

To assemble the macaroons, match two half shells for shape and size, and pipe a 5p-sized amount of white chocolate ganache onto the flat side of one of them.

In the middle, pipe some of the blueberry compote. Top with other half shell and leave to set in fridge. Repeat with remaining shells and filling.

Add sugar thermometer to pan once it comes to the boil – will only work with exact measurement of the temperature.

While sugar is boiling, mix ground almonds and icing sugar. You can sieve larger pieces out for a less refined finish.

Once sugar gets to 109°C, whip 40g of egg whites on full speed.

Once sugar boils to 113°C and egg whites are at stiff peaks, pour sugar onto the egg whites while continuing to mix. Turn speed down while Italian meringue cools to about 40°C.

At request, they even brought along some fairy lights to jazz up some of the other decor in the room.

Jerome Prosser (Sundown’s director) DJ’d the event and made sure that there were tested microphones for the speeches, he calmly juggled playing the music requests, powerpoint and corporate video throughout the night.

Father and son set new Guiness World Record!

Dr Jeff Allan, and his son Ben Cottam-Allan from Birmingham have won a Guiness World Record for the shortest charging time driving an electric car from John O’groats to Lands End. They drove there and back again in the record times of 19 hours 46 minutes and 18 hours 53 minutes in Telsa PH5D. The Guiness World Record is for the charging time of just 3 hours and 43 minutes achieved on the 860 mile southbound journey. More than £1000 was raised for the Alzheimer’s society.

Carolyn McDonald, community fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society said: “We are really grateful to Jeff and Ben for their fundraising efforts as the money raised will help to fund valuble services for people living with dementia. It’s brilliant that their novel take on the John O’Groats to Lands End challenge has brought them a Guinness World Record and I hope it stands the test of time.”

“We are thrilled to have won a Guinness World Record” Said Jeff: “ Our next trip will be much longer - from Norway to Spain,” added Ben.

Tyndallwoods Tree of Light At Christmas the team at Tyndallwoods invites clients and friends to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a Light on their Tree of Light.

The Tree stands in the office garden at 29 Woodbourne Road during the Christmas season.

This year all funds raised will go to Edward’s Trust. The Trust supports children and families facing loss and surviving bereavement.
