8 1 0 2 The Head of Primary says... "PROGRESS is impossible without change, & those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything" - George Bernard Shaw

Bernard Shaw’s quote epitomises 2018 where parents and staff managed financial and personal challenges. It was a time of refining and we will enter 2019 with worthier priorities. God’s presence was tangible with the arrival of Mr Guthrie, who has quietly supported and guided us. The staff covered the many roles that are expected of them with excellence and earned a gratifying rest. They are appreciated more than they realise. The scholars were a pleasure to work with. Many achieved personal bests in diverse areas. Disciplinary matters, for the most part, were minor. Our scholars are complimented on their behaviour wherever they go and live up to the proverb ‘manners maketh the man’. Parents gave of themselves and their time assisting at many events. The Interhouse Athletics, Wine Auction, Creativity Evening, and interactions alongside the sports fields built community and goodwill. Building activities at the Primary School have moved along a trajectory, like never before. The staffroom renovations left staff feeling appreciated with a morale boost. The tireless work of the tuckshop parents, together with the PPSG and parent body, has provided the finances to facilitate the changes to the tuckshop, building the PPSG store, providing outdoor lighting and making the Grade 5-7 outdoor a reality far earlier than thought possible. Thank you to those who have driven the projects. Thank you to the members of the Board, PPSG, PTFA, and parents who pray, serve, support their children, and work with the staff. You are valued more than words can say. 2019 is a year to harness our purpose and to place God at the centre of all we do. We are a great school because we are a great team.

Avihe Tjivau My highlight of the Etosha trip was the obstacle course because it helped us work together better. My team, the Jellyfish, won. I also enjoyed the food, it was delicious. I learned how to make different knots. We made potjiekos and it was delicious.

65

On the Etosha trip I found everything fun and exciting. From when we drove there, until the day we came back, I loved every second of it. We could bond with each other and do fun things together. I loved the Etosha trip.

Lorenzo du Raan For my trip to Etosha, what I loved the most was the fire-making. For that part I chose carefully, because some of the equipment did not work! I chose a knife and a block of magma. We scraped lots of magma and then used a metal rod. The fire lit very quickly and we won!

Benjamin Hendrickse Rodrigo Acebes

My favourite part of the trip was the food it was so good and my mom packed me a tasty sandwich for the bu trip. Breakfast was the best. I also shot a BB gun. I liked the obstacle course as well.

My favourite things about the Etosha trip were the fire-making competition and when we were swimming by the pool and at night my friend and I played games and talked. The food was also very good.

Theresa Beukes My trip was amazing. The food was delicious. My favourite was dessert. The swimming pool was gigantic. The rooms were beautifully decorated. I slept like a baby in those rooms. The game drive was fascinating. I loved the nice dinners at Etosha. It was awesome. Nevaeh Thomas

Erin Moffett My highlight was the obstacle course. We all worked together and supported each other through the obstacles. I loved when our team completed the whole course and even though we did not win, we were still so happy that we did it as a team and had so much fun. I will also never forget the food there!

At Etosha, I had so much fun. We did an obstacle course and the Jellyfish won, which is my team. They had delicious food and desserts. My favourite was the breakfast, it was fantastic. In the morning we went hiking. One night we had a potjiekos competition and the girls won. Later, we had a concert.

Izak Kanime For my Etosha trip I enjoyed the obstacle course. We were losing at first and then we came first. In my opinion we did really well with the blow pipe, BB gun and the bow and arrow.

Ueri Tjitemisa

The hightlight of my Etosha trip was when we had the Potjiekos competition. Before we started, we had to choose a group captain. We started off with cutting all the vegetables that we needed for the potjiekos. When we started cooking, the whole tube of black pepper fell into our pot. We tried our best to take most of it out and somehow succeeded. We then had a group chat and we decided to have dessert for the judges. The boys stole our idea! I honestly thought the boys’ food was better, even though we won. I had an amazing time and I thank all the people who made it possible.

Imani Chaduru I loved going to Etosha! It was such fun. We did a lot of things, but my favourite was the obstacle course. The food was delicious, but I did not like the dessert. I also enjoyed making potjiekos. I hope I can go back again.

Mekere Katjiuongua

My Etosha trip was wonderful. I loved it when Miss Johnston pushed me into the pool! The food was so good. I loved staying in a tent because I camped for the first time in my life. The girls kept on spraying perfume everywhere.

Lara van Rensburg D’Angelo Beukes

My highlight of the Etosha trip was when it was night. My friend and I talked about things. My favourite part was swimming. Our teacher pushed us into the water and it was extremely cold.

One of my highlights was seeing the two snakes. The one was a zebra snake and it was more than two and a half feet long. The other snake was a young whip snake. We only saw his head. I loved hearing the lions roar at night and the knot-making were so much fun. The obstacle course was one of the best. My last highlight was going on the gamedrive and seeing the baby zebra! I loved everything.

66

Karie van Schalkwyk On the way there my best friend and I had an amazing time building guns and playing “aliens were going to catch us.” When we arrived there, we settled in and ate lunch. The food was delicious. The obstacle course was fun and I had to do the balancing. I did not know how to switch my feet while I was on the pole, but Connor told me it’s like jumping on a grenade. That evening was the potjiekos competition and the girls won, two against one. The next day was sad because we had to leave!

Ezekiel Hans We arrived at Etosha and ate lunch, then we went to the tent. At dinner we watched Portugal play soccer against Spain. The first morning we went on a walk. On the last day we learnt how to tie different knots and later did a potjiekos competition. Lastly, we had a campfire concert.

Conner McNamara My favourite part of the Etosha trip was making a fire and doing the obstacle course. The fire was one of my favourite parts becauce it was challenging and fun to light it. My second favourite part was the obstacle course, because I love to do obstacles and it was interesting to try each obstacle out.

Chevonne Shepherd

I enjoyed the obstacle course because we were able to shoot with a BB gun. I also enjoyed making fire. It was fun, interesting and we used a flint to lit our fire! I also enjoyed the pudding, it was delicious.

Lauren van Niekerk

What I enjoyed the most was the food. It was delicious. I enjoyed the game drive and the walk. I also enjoyed the obstacle course because I did the locks. The concert was lovely and that was the hightlight of what I enjoyed the most.

My Etosha highlight was when we made fire. It was fun because we were working as a team. The girls were collecting dry grass and the boys started the fire. We could choose two tools and as the “captain” of the team, I had to pick them. I chose what I thought was most useful. Thankfully, I chose well and we started a fire.

Tuvoje Vilho The highlight of the Etosha trip was when my class and I learnt how to make fire. That was fun because I never learnt how to make fire that way. The other highlight on the Etosha trip was the food. It was cooked perfectly and was really delicious. The obstacle course was also fun because we did fun physical exercises.

Michael Raad On the way to Etos ha we drove in the bus which was grea because we could t talk to each other and six hours felt lik minutes. The food e thirty was great and we also did a obstacle which was fantastic course . Thank you Mrs Ra ll and Miss Johnsto the great trip! n for

Rautandavara Kaumbi

My favourite part of the Etosha trip was when we swam and when we went to the dining area. I found the swimming fun because we did relay races. I found the dining fun because we ate good food and had lots of fun playing. My second favourite part of the Etosha trip was the concert and the potjiekos competition. I enjoyed the concert because our group did well. I enjoyed the potjiekos competition because the food was delicious.

Sara De Jesus

For our trip we went to Etosha. The thing I enjoyed the most was the obstacle course! We were divided in groups and then the groups competed against each other. First, there was someone from the group who had to open locked gates. The next person had to build a puzzle. Then I had to take a loop through a wire and each time the loop touched the wire it would make a noise. After that, the rest of the people had to balance on one leg, shoot arrows and do other things. I really enjoyed this trip!

The Science Fun Day on the 20th of February 2018 is a day we as scholars look forward to because as it says in the name, it is a fun day. On Science Fun Day we are usually shown different science experiments. However, this year it was different for the Grade Sevens. The Science Fun Day started as usual, as any other Wednesday morning, by writing a test. After the brain teasing test, one Grade Seven class went to art as we went to watch a video about different science experiments and how they work, for forty-five minutes. The video was funny as it was virtually realistic because we put up our hands to answer the questions which the presenter posed to the audience in the video. After the video, we had a quick break and met up with our teachers in front of the classes. During the break we saw a man who had brought snakes to school, to show the Grade Fours. This was scary. The teachers took us to the high school hall, where we met the French Ambassador. She came to tell us about studying in France and learning French, which was very interesting to us, the Grade Sevens, since we are still deciding on what language we want to do next year. After the visit, we returned to the primary school, had a quick break, and then went to the Art class. My class then made ice-cream outside. We learnt the easy ice-cream process, which was exciting as everyone waited patiently to see if their efforts would be rewarded after juggling an icy mixture in a bag between two salivating scholars. Fortunately, my partner and I had a perfect mix, which we could not eat because we had both given up sugary food for Lent. Otherwise, the Science Fun Day was awesome, as always, and I am sad to know that was my last one. However, I am happy for the Science experiences I am yet to have in high school.

Please note: All the entries by the children are unedited. Thank you for coming on Monday it was a honour meeting you. Sir you opened a new door to me of nature it was just AMAZING. I was shocked when I could not even see these spectacular creatures! And the photos were wonderful! Do the warning colours give away scents? Are there more of these creatures? If there are would you, please send me a picture. Sir did you know that these were creatures when you first saw them? THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN MR JORDAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KIND REGARDS Karie van Schalkwyk Grade 5B Your presentation was brilliant not only that but it razed my attention for animals a lot. My favourite part was at the end because of the Baby’s bum and also your pictures are excellent and maybe you could teach me how to get excellent pictures and there is only one word to describe you as SPECTACULAR! Andrea Nambahu Gr 4A It was exciting and adventurous. I learned new things that I never knew about nature and that anything in the wild can camouflage. I loved that a butterfly could protect itself by having a similar look of a poisonous butterfly as a descise. I was also kind of sad during the talk because my puppy had currently been stolen and I am still a bit sad about it. I thought the house of the birds were very clever because they have a false entrance which looks like a real entrance and they have a landing spot where if they land the entrance opens which so cool and very clever. I feel that I would like to be a bird living in a house like that because it would be so cool. I love nature especially the animals and I want to be a vet when I grow up. I think that what you are doing is fun and amazing. I loved the demonstration of nature it was so amazing and I hope that you could come again and demonstrate more about nature. That boy Micah who answered that looks like a honey badger really loves nature and he always answers a question when our teacher asks us and he won a prize for his knowledge at a snake demonstration . Aiden Mandy Grade 5B I found your presentation very interesting. I learnt how many animals camouflage in nature. On some pictures I did not even see the insects! This is the first time I actually found these things interesting. I found this very interesting on animals. How they can change colours and how they hide. Some even warn their enemies! This is the first time for the past five years that I have been here when somebody came to tell us something about nature! Thank you for the interesting presentation. Anna Verchusa Grade 5B I found the nature talk yesterday very interesting, I loved it when we had to try and spot the animals or insects in the pictures, which was surprisingly difficult! I thought Louis Jordaan was very brave to go so close to the spiders and strange insects just to make pictures of them. (I personally am not a big fan of insects.) These insects, however, were quite incredible because of their amazing colours to warn predators that they are poisonous, to camouflage so well in their habitat and even to look similar to other insects! (Such as the spider that looked like an ant to hide from its own predators, and then to ambush one for its own meal!) It was amazing to watch the incredible techniques of the and animals to protect themselves and their babies, such as the bird that put fungus on its nest to make it look old so that predators would leave it alone. He made an excellent point about how people think that because they are at the top of the pyramid of life, they are most important and are more valuable and special than the animals or plants but actually, nature would do just fine, even better without people who cut down trees, throw litter everywhere and create air pollution. In conclusion, it was a great talk which made very good points and will make us aware of the small creatures around us. It will make us look at nature differently. Annabelle Zekveld 7A I enjoyed the talk very much. I want him to come back next year but hopefully with a lot of new information. It was one of my favorite talks since I started at grade 1. I want him to come to our school more often because I enjoy going down to the high school and this was the time I enjoyed most. I loved how we had to try and find all the grasshoppers and other bugs and plants that were camouflaged. I also want him to come back because he was very kind and fun. Anthony Jacobs 6B My I enjoyed your presentation it was interesting how you can learn so much in just an hour. How animals camouflage in the wild just to protect them. I only thought that 1 one animal that could camouflage till you came to our school and told us more. Thank you so much I love it I hope you can come back and teach us more. You took your time so that we could understand. The thing I found the most interesting was how spiders can camouflage so well and I learned new animals that camouflage and about plants that was very interesting I hope you can come back and teach the whole school when I grow up I would love to teach children about plants and animal it was a great hour learning about an animals. THANK YOU SO MUCH COME AGAIN! Avihe Tjivau Grade 5 B It was amazingly AWESOME!!!!! I hope you comes back very, very soon. I loved the legless lizard. It looked like a short, and fat snake. I think the nature talk was really cool! If you come back, can you please talk more about animals? Thanks for coming!!! Ben Grade 4A The PowerPoint was very interesting. I learnt about animals I never knew existed, and how these animals can hide in just plain sight. It was really brilliant. This PowerPoint opened up my mind to new journeys and adventures and I would love to go on a journey similar to this one day. The PowerPoint wasn’t too long or to short it was the right amount of time and it didn’t lose the attention of the scholars because it was very interesting. I hope you come again and teach us more about these wonderful, iconic animals.

Mr Jordaan 's nature talk

Thank you for taking the time to come and teach us about these amazing animals. Caitlin Coetzer 7A It was the best presentation I have ever heard in my life. The way how he knew so much about nature was incredible. He found animals that I have never ever seen in my entire life. He taught us so much the natural life before the talk I did not know very much about nature and nature was very boring. But after the talk I knew so much more about nature and I also learnt that nature is not boring after all . Mr Jordaan inspired me to care more about nature. I hope he comes soon again. Carnalito GR 4A Thank you MR Jordaan for the wonderful speech I enjoyed it very much! I liked the part where there was a camouflaged lizard and the one about the butterflies. It was very interesting and I would for you to come back and do another brilliant nature talk. I would like to learn more about the camouflaged animals so do not walk into their trap or hurt them. It would be fun if you could bring one of a camouflaged animal and show us. I would want to come and visit if I could and experience it myself that would be awesome. I look forward on seeing you next time! Chevonne Shepherd Grade 5B I would love to hear more about nature again! I really enjoyed the talk because I did not know about all those amazing animals. What that I think was one of the most interesting facts to listen to was all those insects. The spider that changes colour was beautiful and those other insects that hide away in rocks and plants was amazing. The one about the cameleon was really wonderful to listen to, and I also did not know that a few butterflies are poisonous. It must be an amazing and fun job to find and learn about so many different animals and insects. I think that listening to someone like you would really inspire people to look after the wonder kinds of nature and I really hope that you will come and talk about animals, insects and plants again. Christina Hugo Grade 5A It was fun listening and seeing the amazing pictures I would love him to come back I love Nature I knew of the honey badger and the cheetah cub’s mimicry. But I let Micah my best friend answer. I loved the presentation that Jordaan made. I loved seeing a person who loves Nature. And someone who for Nature. My favourite animal is a crocodile and I hope he loves where he lives and I really hope he comes back and tell more I loved the way he spoke about Nature. Colin Grade 4A Thank you for coming and teaching us more about animals and plants. I loved it because I think it is amazing to see all the animals and all their different colours and different strategies to protect their selves from their predators. My favourite animal was the insects and the lizards because they were camouflaged so well. My favourite plant was the one that shakes when an animal eats it and the one that looks like a rock. I really enjoyed it. Connor McNamara Grade 5B The talk we had on Monday was a very interesting talk. I enjoyed it very much. Mr Louis Jordaan explained to us so many things and told us that animals can camouflage with instinct. I would enjoy having him come with us on the hike and to Gogabib so that he can explain all the rest to us. He taught us things we didn’t know about yet. He also made it fun so that it will have our attention. Connor Murphy 7A Mr Jordaan thank you so much for your spectacular talk about nature I never knew that butterfly was poisons. I really learned a lot of things. What I found very interesting was all those birds and insects I never knew that spiders could change colour I don’t really like spiders some of them scare me but I love the daddy long legs spiders you really inspired me to take care of animals so hopefully you can inspire people to stop littering it hurts the animal’s environment Kind regards Danielle Hillinger Grade 5A

could come visit you and talk more about all of these things so that I can learn more about nature and its meanings so that I can show my parents how much I learned from you. You’re the best person in Namibia. I would love it if you come to our school again. Dieter Setzkorn Grade 5A I think the talk was really amazing. It was so interesting. I hope he comes back again. I enjoyed seeing the different types of animals. Some of the creatures freaked me out but it was something different that I did not know about. I enjoyed looking for the creatures when they were camouflaged to the leaves or the stones or the grass. I loved seeing some plants I have never seen before. One day I would really like to visit his farm one day and see all these creatures myself. Their habitats were really awesome. How the animals made them and how the habitats looked? I never knew that an ant could look just like a spider that was really cool. The baby cheetah was really cute. Next time I think there should be some videos of the creatures so we can see what they do. Emma Landman 6B I really loved the talk that we had with you I would love to have another talk. The photography was beautiful. It was fun when you showed us the pictures and we had to try and spot the little animal that was camouflaged in the background. I have a leopard tortoise at home and it was interesting to find out that he can swim. At least I now know he won’t drown. My favourite animal was the trapdoor spider it interesting to see how it builds It house. All so the butterflies with their beautiful winds. It was really great. Emma van Rensburg Grade 5A I think the talk about the animals and nature was very inspiring. It showed us this world truly is worth saving and caring for! The habitats that humans have destroyed and the animals man have killed for the simple reason of fun is wrong and cruel. The speech that you gave yesterday was fascinating and amazing, as it showed us how much of this wonderful world we miss and don’t see. The animals always have an acceptable reason for killing or destroying, but us humans, we simply kill and destroy without a second thought and that is not wright. You should carry on showing people the wonders of the world as it might prevent them from being wiped out completely! You are saving lives and homes! Thank you for your speech yesterday Wendy-Lee Milne 7A Thank you Mr Jordaan for the presentation it was very interesting. The camouflage was the most interesting for me especially the spiders also enjoyed the salamanders and the plants .I would really enjoy it if you would visit us again. The presentation was well prepared . The poisonous butterflies were really interesting as well as the bird I really appreciate the effort to fly from SA just to come and speak to us than you very very much sir good day. Ezekiel Hans Grade 5 B The thing I enjoyed most of all was hearing you talk to us about how beautiful Nature really is. I loved listening to you talk to us about all the tiny things in Nature that you usually wouldn’t keep an eye on, it’s just as if you were talking about life. As if you were talking about all of the tiny things in life that you should be thankful for. I also loved trying to find the animal in the picture. I find it quite cool that the animals could camouflage so well in the picture. It’s also quite cool looking at how the animal looked a long time ago, then comparing it to how it looks now, and how it has adapted to the wild. I absolutely loved that you came! I learned so much from you and I would love seeing you again. Grace Magnun Grade 5A The slide show was really interesting. I never knew that there were so many small animals, I never really see any of those animals, well that’s probably because they can camouflage so well. I have only seen the Honey Badger, the bird that can camouflage between the rocks, the cheetah and some others. I thought that only a chameleon could do it , but now I know that chameleons aren’t the only ones, I know now that also other insects and plants. I would like to learn more. Henry Grant Grade 5A I want to thank you for visiting us on Monday and telling us about different types of animals and telling us facts about them. Thank you for telling us to watch out for certain animals that are poisonous [now i know that it’s animals that are black and orange] thank you for showing us different types of plants. Thank you for showing us animals that camouflage in plants, trees and on the ground I really enjoyed and thought that it was really cool when they camouflaged. I found your presentation very interesting. Thank you for visiting us. Izak Kanime Grade 5B The Nature Talk was very interesting. I love animals and very much enjoyed the talk. We learnt a lot of things we did not know, such as: how animals camouflage, as well as different animal species. It was fun to try and guess where the animals were hiding. I would definitely recommend the talk to anybody who loves nature. I think everyone enjoyed it and would like to thank you that you even came to talk to us! It was very early in the morning and I can’t believe you knew all that about nature! It was very prepared and organized and was a very different approach then I thought (in a good way) It was very kind of you to share your knowledge with us. As I said I love animals and would love if you did it one day to another school that is not as fortunate as St Paul’s. My favorite animal was the ant spider (I can’t remember it’s real name) Kind regards, Jasmine Rennie Grade 5A P.S. It was so interesting! The talk that Mr Louis Jordan gave to us about nature was a funny and interesting. I learned a lot about animals and their abilities to hide, change colour and worn predators. I also enjoyed all the weird and funny looking insects and other animals but my

most favourite part was at the end when the we had to look for the camouflaged insects and animals. I wish for Mr Louis to come back and tell us more interesting facts like: man is not number one. Joel Hiveluah 6B Mr Jordaan I really enjoyed the presentation we had about nature on Monday . I like it that you came all the way here to tell us about how important nature is to us. I liked that animals are just as important as humans and also thank you for teaching us all about camouflaged insects and all the names of different insects and also how the spider tries to hide from their predators and how it pretends to be an ant. Also how insect webs look like. I also enjoyed the talk about the plants and what type of animals go to which plants. I must say the presentation was well prepared. I cant wait to see you again thank you so much. Joyeuse Gahutu Grade 5 B Thank you for coming on Monday it was a honour meeting you. Sir you opened a new door to me of nature it was just AMAZING. KIND REGARDS Karie Van Schalkwyk Grade 5B It was really interesting how much things can hide in nature. I loved it when you showed what some birds make their nest out of and how prey confuse their predator. I wish you just told us more about seed dispersion, because it was really interesting and you only told us a few seed dispersions. You have been a great inspiration and have inspired me to become an animal Scientist thank you for coming and taking time of your work. I loved your talk and I hope you make it longer in the future. Hope you can come again and thanks Mr Jordaan. Keaira GR 4A

Mr Jordaan 's nature talk

It was one of the best talks I have ever heard. Before this I thought that Nature was not so important, but when Mr. Jordaan showed us how important Nature was, I was amazed! Even though most things he showed us didn’t look very nice it was still very interesting, like the one butterfly that looked poisonous, but was not. I think many people were inspired by Nature and Mr. Jordaan. Some insects were looked very nice, but others weren’t. I want Mr. Jordaan to come back and teach us more about Nature and the inspiring things all the insects can do. My favourite insect was the Spider that looked like an ant. I can’t wait until we have another talk about Nature. Thank you for coming to our school. Keegan Gr 4A

It was amazing! Could talk more about caracals? (caracals are my favourite animal) Could you come back? Where do you find star bushes and the plant that looks like caracal feces? I love nature! Most of all I love mimicry it is so cool!!!! How long are you in Namibia for? Have you ever seen a real life caracal if you have how many times have you seen one? What is your favorite animal? Could you talk more about mimicry? What is your favourite tree? Kian Gr 4A I thought that your work was lovely. It inspired me. I never knew any of those animals could change colour and especially the way one type of beetle changes colour to prevent it from being eaten for it is poisonous. And a harmless butterfly who does not want to be eaten, because it is poisonous as well I would love to hear more about nature because I love the outdoors my friend has a pet squirrel because she loves animals I bet she would want to learn all about nature and I wish I teach her all about you and your work but sadly I cannot for you are not in Rundu where she lives and where I used to be a scholar. It would be a dream come true to see you again you have always been a great inspiration and will always be. You make me feel like the happiest person on earth may God bless you, Bless you until the day I die. You make everybody experience the good attention they do not want to experience in class you’re the reason people pay attention to nature it is amazing for you to teach everybody abut nature they hate nature and think it is trash but you make them see how amazing and important nature can really be God has given you the gift to see the little parts of nature he said “I know this lovely young ma will see that nature is important and not everyone will but I know very well he will.” You make me go hooray just hearing your friendly nature voice I love you so much you are the fifth best person I know in the world. Kiara Gr.4A Lara Van Rensburg 5B Thank you for coming last Monday, I loved it so much! I would love it if you could come again and talk more about animals. I never knew that other animals could camouflaged like that. I did not know that geckos could mimic snacks like that, but know I do. I think your presentation was amazing. I just have one question did you take those photos? I just want to say that you have been a great influence on me. Thank you so much for coming it mend a lot to me. For Lara Van Rensburg I loved your beautiful presentation about nature. I love nature and I learned so many new things I hope you come and visit again soon and show us some new pictures you took. And I was wondering if those animals were from Namibia.

Please come and visit us again. Our school loved that presentation and my class couldn’t stop talking about it after that. My favourite part of your speech was the spider that looked like an ant. And I wanted to know if you’ve gone to a farm before because there’s lots of nature there and I once saw a sand lizard on my farm and I was hoping if you come back can a sand lizard be something you talk about I love them and I love nature thanks for the nature talk. It was an amazing experience I learned that nature is our responsibility, and we must make sure all the animals are safe. I also learned many facts about animals, like how spiders can pretend that they are ants so they can eat the ants and also so the ants could protect the spider. My favorite part was when you talked about my favorite animal a cheetah. I really hope you could visit soon. The nature talk because I learned that there are many animals that people do not know about and we have to keep them safe. Makda Shepard Gr 4A Dear Mr.Jordaan , today I will be writing to you about what I thought about your speech about nature. I thought it was brilliant you expressed your feelings so well about nature and that is what I loved about your speech. For the first time I began to love nature more then I used to love it. I loved how you showed us animals that we haven’t seen before. Your speech was really inspiring to listen to!!! In my head I thought “Mr. Jordaan came a long way to present his presentation I really love the way he is expressing himself and telling us why he loves nature” That is what I thought. I loved how you showed us the pyramid and all the different things that matter in nature. I really want you to come back because your speech was very inspiring to watch and to listen to!!!! You made me love nature and play outside every day I get back from school. You are really inspiring. I also loved how you found all those animals and got to take pictures of them… You were very confident to present your wonderful speech. I really want to say thank you for coming to our school and telling us wonderful things about nature that we haven’t heard before. Your speech was beautiful and I admire the way you spoke; you really gave us a beautiful speech about nature!! I think your very special I hope you have a wonderful future and please come back to St Pauls!!! I would like to hear another speech about nature and I also want to give you a huge hug and say THANK YOU one again!!!! Martina 4A I loved the talk. I want him to come back some day because it was encouraging and interesting. I think it was interesting because I liked the speech, the photos and all the details. What I liked the most was the nature and the animals. I would like to go out into the wild and see some of the animal. I would also like to find a new species of animals and test the D.N.A of the animals. I want to help all the animals in the world and save the endangered species in Africa. Thank you Mr Louis Jordaan for encouraging me. Max Magnun 6B My favourite part was when you asked why the baby cheetah had an almost black body and I said so that it looks like a honey badger the honey badger is my favourite animal because they so tough and never give up. I have loved animals ever since was about six and you coming to talk about the one thing I love so much was fantastic and the first animal I think about is the octopus. They can not only change their colour but even the texture of their skin. I hope you come back real soon. I also thought it was amazing how well the gecko could hide themselves. Micah grade 4A Thank you very much for coming Mr Louis Jordaan. I really enjoyed the slide show you did for us was excellent. I really learnt a lot of things I never knew abought birds and insects and their natural instinct to hide in different places. I think all of us learnt a very good lesson. Just to think that there are so many animals around us that we never even see and there are so many animals still to discover there are 5,000,000 animals still to be discovered in the world and 95 percent of the ocean is still un explored. I really admire your work! Michael Raad Grade 5 B

I liked it because you showed me that you have to understand animals and plants to like them. I never knew that animals could hide in such weird places and plants. I hope you come back to show us new things about plants and animals. I hope you enjoyed talking to us as much as we enjoyed it listening to you. Molly grade 4A I found Mr. Louis Jordan’s talk very interesting. His photos were beautiful and he knew very well what he wanted to say. He is a very intelligent man and I enjoy nature just as much as he does. I really appreciated him giving up his valuable time to come and talk about something he loves. Mr. Louis is a very favoured person of mine. He can come and do another lecture any day if it was up to me. I also enjoyed him because he is most likely to be Afrikaans just like me. I found it an honor being there and being able to listen to him. I would enjoy it very much if Mr. Louis Jordan would come back. Moné Graham 6B Hallo Mr Jordaan! I’m here to regard the talk you presented to the grade 4-7 of St Paul’s. I loved the first animal you talked about the best. It was the Flower spider. I love the pictures you showed us where we had to guess were the animal was camouflaged. I remember one bird that you showed us that was almost impossible to find! I don’t remember the name of this bird, but I know that it looked a lot like a genifuel and would not make a nest for its eggs. Instead it would lay the eggs in a hole PS I thought the eggs look super cute. I would like to thank you for flying/ driving all the way from South Africa. I wish you a safe gurney back home. Love Naomi. Naomi Nadimi Grade 5A Mr Jordaan’s presentation was wonderful. The presentation not only educated the children of St Pauls but gave us a better understanding of nature. Mr Jordaan educated the children very well. The presentation was interesting because of the wonderful pictures. The presentation taught us how even the smallest creatures can do great things. I think Mr Jordaan is one of the people who loves nature and wants to save animals and nature from poachers. We really need more people like him. I hope he comes back and educate us on the world of nature. Nashe Murape 6B Yesterday we had a nature presentation we learnt about how different animals can adapt and hide very well in their environment. I never knew that other animals apart from chameleons can change colour. It was presented by Mr. Louis Jordaan and it was very interesting to hear and listen to. We learnt there are certain animals like mantises, spiders and grasshoppers as well as lizards can be undetectable when they are in their natural habitats. I never knew that even butterflies like the monarch can be poisonous because of its signalling colours and also who knew that even caterpillars and birds can hide in their homes. He showed us an extraordinary presentation about insects and animals. We saw that a baby cheetah looks like a honey badger and maybe that is probable why not many animals eat baby cheetahs. There is a lizard that can take of its own tale when a predator is holding the tail. We also learnt about the star plant it was a very interesting plant to hear about. My favourite parts of it was seeing the animals and plants hide in their homes like a bird that was undetectable when it was sitting near rocks I hope he comes back with another presentation about more things and I hope to see what he saw soon. Natalie Muonde Grade 6A

The nature talk was a fun opportunity to learn new thing about certain animals and plants. Their different scientific names and Afrikaans names were fun to try and pronounce. It was interesting as to how some animals adapt to the environment. I find spiders a little disturbing and so I didn’t enjoy seeing them, however I found it awesome to see different ways they can camouflage into different plants, rocks, and even other animals! The birds that adapted by using certain dead bushes and spiders’ webs to make their nests was interesting to see. The bird that was very easy to see in the water, was difficult ope to see when sitting on its nest, in the rocky outcrop. inspire me to go outside more often! I really love nature and all animals there just so amazing the way they were made I know a lot of friends who won’t think the same as I. here is proof I love animals and nature. we had two hamsters two fish two dogs a parrot three cats and a tortoise, we have a flower garden, a fruit garden and vegetable garden we even have a bird feeder. You really love nature don’t you please come back again with an animal if you can and talk about raccoons may God bless you!!!!!!!!!! Anoushka Gr.4a

I enjoyed the presentation it was interesting and all of those animals you talked about it was interesting and exciting, I learnt a lot about the animals and I would like you to do another presentation. The animals that could camouflaged were cool like the gecko and spiders, the trapdoor spider was really cool and the poisonous bugs and animals were very interesting and the way that the leopards and honey badgers camouflage is cool. Thank you for teaching us about the animals I hope you come again. Nicolas Deckenbrock Grade 5A I have enjoyed your presentation, with all the little creatures that can barely be spotted. It was very interesting about the spider who looks like an ant, and the others. I have never heard such interesting plant and animal names in my whole life. Thank you for coming to St Paul’s College to teach us such extraordinary things. I laughed when you showed the picture of the “Baby’s Bum.” When I got home I told my parents and they were very interested in your presentation. These were my favourite things: * the spider that looked like an ant * the Baby’s bum * the baby monkey on the first slide * the star bush * the camouflage games * the interesting names Sanne Dewulf Grade 5B I enjoyed your presentation, it was extremely interesting, and all the little animals that can barely be spotted by our human eyes. It was interesting seeing their strategies to camouflage, some better than others. My favourite part is when you shoed us the “Baby’s Bum” Then I had a good laugh ; ). Maybe you could come again and speak more about nature and its beauties. The things I mostly enjoyed are: *The Baby’s Bum, *The “fake bird entrance” (Sorry, I forgot the name) *The star plant and how it “defends” itself Thank you for your time, and for coming to present it to us. Kind Regards, Sara De Jesus Grade 5B I quite enjoyed the nature talk presented to us yesterday by Mr. Jordaan. I enjoyed learning interesting and new facts about both animals and plants. I thought the pictures that Mr. Jordaan presented were brilliant considering the angles he took them from. I was impressed by how he explained the animals and plants’ adaptations. If I was asked whether I thought St. Paul’s College should organise such a presentation again, I would say yes! I want to thank Mrs. Koekemoer and Mr. Jordaan for showing grades 4 to 7 this presentation. Hopefully the students of the primary school will have the opportunity to witness such an amazing insight on life in wild once again. I hope that Mr. Jordaan will continue expressing his love for nature and widen Namibians’ knowledge of this fascinating wildlife we have here. We, as Namibians are very privileged to have such wildlife in our country. Shana Arendorf 7B

The 2018 Readathon was held from the 24th to 28th of September. During this event, learners were encouraged to contribute to the ‘Smarties Campaign’. The campaign asked for donations of various types (from useful items to money), and contributions could be made until the 19th of October. The deadline for donations was extended to the 31st of October to accommodate the teachers’ and pupils’ enthusiastic response. Various competitions were held, and they resulted in the following winners and rewards: • Grade 6 B: is going on an outing to Nankuse on the 19th November. • Grade 3 A: is going to the Mammadu Foundation (primary and pre-primary school in Katutura) on the 12th of November. • Grade 1 A: is going to Oude Rust Old Age Home to sing and read to the elderly people, and the students are also taking gifts to them. • Grade 1 B: is going to Katutura old age home on the 9th November to sing and read to the old people and the students are also taking gifts to them. • Grade 5 A and B (of 2018): will go to the Lidar Foundation in the Damara district of Katutura to take them gifts, clothes and shoes. We also collected N$5000 for the Foundation to buy school uniforms for the girls. In January 2019, they will hand over the school uniforms. On behalf of St Paul’s Primary School and myself, I want to extend a heart-felt thank you to all the parents, students and our community who made our Readathon 2018 a memorable one.

Forming firm foundations for the future

St Paul’s is considered a school with excellent academic standards and achievements. The teachers at this school strive to provide all the necessary resources that will equip learners to reach their full scholastic potential. Even though this is the case, there are still scholars who experience challenges in the classroom environment. It is therefore imperative that a holistic approach be implemented in the school, in order for these scholars to maximise their learning potential. We aim at minimising and removing barriers to learning so as to accommodate all scholars within our school community. A collaborative approach between myself, the teachers and our parents will be used when identifying barriers and implementing strategies to alleviate these barriers. St Paul’s ensures that all scholars, including those experiencing academic challenges, receive the best academic service our school has to offer. If your child has been identified as needing additional learner support, it is not a reason to panic! All it means is that your child has been given the opportunity to improve their school work, which, in essence, is the most wonderful gift that you and our school could give your child, as knowledge has the power to open up not only the minds of our children, but also their futures.

Our learner support lessons are a service that is provided for Grade 1 to Grade 4 scholars. These support lessons are conducted in small groups and take place during school hours. Each support lesson is approximately 35 minutes, and takes place during non-examinable lessons. The lessons will commence immediately after the parents/caregivers have received notification from the school. This will be in the form of a meeting or a formal letter. My role as a learner support teacher is to apply supportive strategies to assist learners within the classroom. We concentrate on building the foundations that may have been lost or forgotten. Our focus is predominantly on phonics, reading, and comprehension.

We lost some games, but we also won some games! Our U/10 boys and U/12 boys and girls were chosen to play in the FNB NTA National School League in October 2018. This was exciting and all the players played well. Our participation in the Tennis League benefitted our tennis players tremendously. Towards the end of the season we could see a noticeable improvement in their ball skills and ability to play in a tournament. We are very proud of them all. We hope to see the tennis going from strength to strength in 2019.
