The Head of Primary says...

2019! Despite the drought and realities of everyday life during the year, St Paul’s Primary

"The world is a drought when out of

Love"

- Brandon Boyd

"Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” Hosea 6:3

experienced abundance in so many areas. We experienced abundant:

Grace - from God who gave us His favour and blessing freely. Joy - from working with children who make each day an adventure. Peace - free from huge concerns to manage within the School. Gratitude - that we are able to work at St Paul’s College. Success - from academic breakthroughs to sporting and cultural achievements. Fun - at the Mad Hatter Walk, the Creativity Evening, Paulie’s antics and in class too! Appreciation - for parents who work with us to educate the children. Blessing - from parents who gave of their time and finances to make a difference. Growth - a new and improved Media Centre, a tranquil area for Gr 5 - 7 and more plans for 2020.

Thank you to the staff who are passionate about the children they teach and are committed to work as a team ensuring that we can offer quality academic, cultural and sporting experiences. The staff and I would like to extend our gratitude to the School Board, PTFA, PPSG, parents who pray, parents who work in the tuckshop and to the encouragers. We are blessed by the support you give to us in so many ways.

All aboard The Okapuka Express

Teachers, scholars, food and drink We all boarded a train – our adventure was on the brink. The heat was intense and sunscreen filled the air The teachers knew this would be a tiring affair. We filled the tiny train to the rafters Not knowing what animal we would see for starters. Don’t you worry, the children let us know There’s a springbok! Screamed the precious cargo! Shouting and laughing the whole day through Quiet as a mouse on the game-drive they knew. We saw many animals far and wide Even a couple of bat-eared foxes to our surprise. Impala and wildebeest played in the dust Seeing the rhino up close was definitely a must! The sable antelope is always a treat The friendly warthog came right up to our feet! The game-drive ended and the heat gave us a blast We knew we needed to get back to the lodge fast! The day was ended with a lovely cool swim Our happy little hearts were filled to the brim. Off we went back on our way Many fond memories were shared that day.

n a a D o t g in t u o Gr 3 P E E K h it w n e jo il V This year the Grade 3s were privileged enough to experience the Khomas Environmental Education Programme. The day was filled with an exciting hike where the children were instructed to be animal detectives. Oh boy, what a wonderful experience to use your bush voice and to keep your eyes and ears sharp. However, this year we struggled to see game due to the devasting drought. But, the wonderful guides made the best of the opportunity and took the children on an educational journey. From observing animal prints to identifying some exciting 'poop', the children had a blast learning about our beautiful country. To top it off, one class was surprised while leaving the reserve by a tower of giraffes.

the o t ip r t l a n io t a Gr 5A Educ e g la il V a h s o t E a Taleni Afric 2019 was the fourth year that the Gr. 5 groups visited the Taleni Africa Etosha Village, a lodge two kilometres from the entrance gate to Okaukuejo. Mr Hein Vosloo, the Manager, and his staff are well trained in presenting veld school to pupils from different grades and ages. The activities are educational, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable: An early-morning hike to a viewing point ensured the most amazing sunrise, and making a fire without matches or a lighter was a huge challenge for all the groups. During the obstacle course, the groups competed against time. Opening gates, building wooden puzzles, balancing on a pole while throwing tennis balls into a box, shooting with bows

65

and arrows and a bb-gun, and walking in groups of four using two planks for balance (left feet on one plank and right feet on the other) all offered hours of excitement. Learning to tie different knots in rope resulted in a rope-tying competition with beautiful prizes. Furthermore, the 'potjiekos' competition and the campfire concert were two highlights of the trip. The captain of each winning group received a weekend at the Taleni Etosha Village for his or her whole family. The winning captain of Gr. 5A 2019 was Angelo Bertolini. The scholars slept in fully equipped tents with matrasses, duvets and pillows, which made the nights comfortable and warm. To have all one’s meals in the lodge, have as much as one can eat, and to feed a kudu some of your breakfast ‌ is just a bonus. We are thankful to all the parents who supported our trip this .year, and therefore making this adventure possible for their children.

The Gr 6s went 'camping' Rock Lodge Rock Lodge, what an experience I will never forge t, From hiking to swimming are a few things I won't regret. Don't get me wrong, some things were kind of scary , Like spiders and abseiling (I did that one, just barel y!). The night at the riverbed and stars - I did not want to blink. Oh, and Mrs Tordiffe, I saw Jupiter, I think! The one thing I learnt the most is teamwork, And if you don''t have that...well, you're toast! The Islands, Spiderweb and Bomb were tricky, But that mud water, it was the most icky. All in all it was fun and great, And it left us al in a wonderful state. Emilia Shipiki, 6A

A group of very eager (but apprehensive) scholars sat under the shady trees on Friday, 5 April waiting to face some slithery creatures. Not knowing what to expect, the boxes were opened one-by-one, each with its own scaly surprise.

eone ! m o s s s id D kes? a n s s s s y a sss

Mr Combrinck (aka Stretch) and Ms Curtis from the Swakopmund Reptile Park were very informative and shared many facts about the snakes that inhabit Namibia. Mr Combrinck mentioned that there are 90 species of snakes in Namibia but only a few of those can cause harm to humans. He also told us about a ‘pet’ black mamba that allows itself to be handled freely by Mr Combrinck – it does not strike or misbehave. He said it is very rare for a venomous snake to be so tame; laughing, he said it must be the snake’s introverted personality. When it came to the actual demonstration, some inquisitive scholars moved in for a closer look, while others (including some teachers) took many steps backwards to give the ‘snakeman’ ample room to handle a surprisingly relaxed Boomslang. There was an extremely nervous student teacher who was sitting in

the front row. I think she may have received more than she had bargained for when this venomous snake was approximately 1 metre away from her head! There were gasps amongst the crowd when the Boomslang decided to slither up the snake-handler's arm. The next demonstration left some teachers and scholars feeling a little uneasy as Mr Combrinck casually put a 22-year-old Zebra Snake on the ground. Much to our amazement, this usually aggressive snake with striking (excuse the pun) colourations and markings was particularly docile, and after a while it completely blended into the dirt. Unfortunately, after the Zebra Snake made her appearance, I had to dash off to my next class, but a little birdy told me that there were a few more boxes filled with some of our interesting coldblooded friends. ‘Word on the street’ was that St Paul’s had snakes on the field. This was the rumour going around on the Grade 1 turf! So please, don’t be alarmed if you happen to hear about this; it was only part of an educational talk. To end off, we have some wise words from ‘Stretch’ himself, “If the snake is 2 metres away just stand still, if the snake is less than 2 metres away then you’re in trouble!”

Science is fun!

Forming firm foundations for the future

St Paul’s is considered a school with excellent academic standards and achievements. The teachers at this school strive to provide all the necessary resources that will equip learners to reach their full scholastic potential. Even though this is the case, there are still scholars who experience challenges in the classroom environment. It is therefore imperative that a holistic approach be implemented in the school, in order for these scholars to maximise their learning potential. We aim at minimising and removing barriers to learning so as to accommodate all scholars within our school community. A collaborative approach between myself, the teachers and our parents will be used when identifying barriers and implementing strategies to alleviate these barriers. St Paul’s ensures that all scholars, including those experiencing academic challenges, receive the best academic service our school has to offer. If your child has been identified as needing additional learner support, it is not a reason to panic! All it means is that your child has been given the opportunity to improve their school work, which in essence is the most wonderful gift that you and our school could give your child, as knowledge has the power to open up not only the minds of our children, but also their futures. Our learner support lessons is a service that is provided for Grade 1 to Grade 4 scholars. These support lessons are conducted in small groups and take place during school hours. Each support lesson is approximately 35 minutes and takes place during non-examinable lessons. The lessons will commence immediately after the parents/caregivers have received notification from the school. This will be in the form of a meeting or a formal letter. My role as a learner support teacher is to apply supportive strategies to assist learners within the classroom. We concentrate on building the foundations that may have been lost or forgotten. Our focus is predominantly on phonics, reading and comprehension.

Theopolina Kapani visits St Paul's

I was born and raised by a single-parent mother in impoverished circumstances in Dordabis, a sub-economic township on the fringes of Windhoek that grapples with organized crime, poverty and drug abuse. After completing primary school, I went to Ella du Plessis High School, where I furthered my high school studies. I obtained 53 points in Grade 12. I had a dream of going to varsity and pursuing my dream of one day becoming an engineer. I was ill informed or rather misinformed and had no idea there were government loans, all I knew was I was going to go to varsity and study engineering. I discussed the issue with my mother, who at the time was in no position to finance my varsity studies, and she suggested that I only pray. She herself was unable to receive a formal education because my grandparents could not afford to take her to school. My mom cannot read or write but, of course, it would be a pity to believe that how one speaks, their ability to read or write alone should be the measure of intelligence. I know for a fact that all that I am is because of her. I know for a fact that all that she has taught me goes beyond what I could have ever learnt in a classroom/university lecture room. Everyday she teaches me what it means to both survive and live. I often think about how her life would have unfolded if she had all the opportunities I have. Each time it pains me but then I remember a dream deferred is not necessarily a dream denied. She was and is always a driving force and she constantly told me that I, one day, will be an engineer.

Little Miss Pippi Longstocking wore shoes that were larger Endlessly waiting for her shipwrecked father! Truth be told, there’s many a story Who knew a smelly pair of shoes could take all the glory? Now hold on just one minute, before my sparkly shoes and I go There’s one last thing I really need you to know! Out there is a humungous world and far yonder Here’s something for you to sit and ponder! There are short shoes and tall shoes, fat and skinny ones too The poor ones and rich ones, the happy ones and those that are blue! It’s up to us kids to make sure they all fit in Even if all you can afford is to give them a grin! Shoes are shoes, they are more alike than you think Ah, this is wonderful, we’re onto something good; this is just the brink! Kindness and caring and being in someone else’s shoes This is by far the best thing you could choose!

Archery This year St Paul’s College featured regularly in the medal categories at competitions, with Jasmine Rennie (junior girls), Kyril Ngishekwa (junior boys), Kyra Ngishekwa (senior girls) and Damian Beukes (senior boys) making us exceptionally proud. Archery has become popular throughout the country as a result of the well-organised development that is taking place. This year had 13 competitions – from as far north as Otavi to Keetmanshoop in the south, and from Gobabis in the east to Walvis Bay in the west. 26 schools/clubs are affiliated with NASP and participates at the events. At the National NASP competition held in September, the St Paul’s Junior A Team (Kyril Nghishekwa, Jasmine Rennie, Hayley Stainton, and Christiaan van der Westhuizen) came third. Jasmine came 2nd in Bull’s-eye, 6th in 3D and 4th Overall from all the junior girls. Kyra Ngishekwa, Kyril Ngishekwa and Damian Beukes came in the Top 10 in all their respective categories. Christiaan van der Westhuizen came in the Top 10 for the 3D and the Overall categories and Hayley Stainton came 10th in Bull’s-eye. We are extremely proud of each archer’s scores, as they improve steadily from one competition to the next. It was a great group to work with. Their skill and accuracy improved tremendously during the year. Their concentration and ability to focus also improved. We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Dewulf for their consistent support and help, both at practices and at competitions. We really appreciate the love and dedication they show towards the children and the sport. One Day 2019

This year’s One Day Camp was characterized by God’s abundance, more than we could have ever anticipated. The theme He>I was emphasized throughout the event as every worship song and teaching session pointed the youth toward recognising the greatness of Jesus. Laughter, joy, and just plain silliness were also a part of the day. New Song Family Church donated money, food, and wonderful volunteers who helped make the day a huge success. More meat, cakes, cookies, and fruit than could be eaten was available, along with a group dance and a 'show off your skills' dance-off. The day ended with many decisions being made to walk more closely with Jesus, along with the 17 youth who asked Jesus to be their Lord and Saviour for all eternity. Yes, God definitely showed Himself to be greater than anything we could have imagined for One Day 2019!
