To secure financial support for each of the five campuses of the Southern University System; to provide broader educational advantages for our students, encourage research among our faculty, and advance the University’s role in helping to build an increasingly functional Louisiana.
THE 1880 SOCIETY
The 1880 Society was named to celebrate the founding year of our University. The mission is to create a culture of philanthropy at Southern University, and a culture of giving among its alumni to expand its network of supporters and donor base in order to form a mechanism for Southern University to become financially self-sustaining. To date, The 1880 Society has 796 members.
The mission of the 1880 Society Annual Fund is to direct sizable resources to the students, faculty, and campuses of the Southern University and A&M College System. The Fund has directed more than $6.5 million dollars in direct support to the Southern University A&M College System since its inception in 2012. The Annual Fund has partnered with more than 3,400 donors who stand by the Fund’s mission to provide resources for the students and faculty of the University.

As president of the Southern University System, I am honored to address all who contribute to The 1880 Society. Your collective support has become a cornerstone of Southern University’s success, enabling the System to transform lives through access and opportunity while amplifying Southern’s voice far and wide.
The 1880 Society plays a critical role in amplifying Southern University’s voice, ensuring it’s message reaches state and federal leaders, stakeholders, and communities. Your generosity not only provides the resources necessary to demonstrate our value and secure essential investments, but also exemplifies the profound impact of philanthropy as a force for leadership and change. To every donor who has supported The 1880 Society, thank you for making a difference. Your contributions enable us to share Southern University’s story, expand opportunities for students, and forge partnerships that strengthen academic programs and infrastructure. Together, we are creating a legacy of excellence that resonates far beyond the campuses, transforming lives, and shaping the future.
As we work to achieve the transformative vision set forth for Southern’s future, the role of The 1880 Society remains indispensable. I encourage all who support this effort to remain engaged and to consider expanding your contributions, as the need for Southern’s voice— and the transformative impact of your generosity—has never been greater.

DENNIS J. SHIELDS President Southern University and A&M College System
“As president of The 1880 Society, I want to thank all of you for your support and contributions during 2024. Your contributions continue to fuel the dreams of SU students and provide much needed support to campus initiatives.
The vision of the 1880 Society is to develop an organization that will raise funds in sufficient amounts that will provide a minimum of $1 million in annual unrestricted cash support to the Southern University System and its campuses. In 2024 the 1880 Society raised over $650,000.
As we continue our efforts to increase annual donations to The 1880 Society, we want to welcome all of our new members. We need the help and support of all our members to meet our vision. We need your help recruiting new members and identifying other funding sources.
The 1880 Society funds help fill an important gap in system funding. Since inception, over 50 percent of the funds have gone to support students through scholarships and grants. A large portion of the contributions have also gone toward supporting system/campus initiatives. This mailer provides additional information on how contributions are used to support the system.”

“What better way to honor the institution that has been instrumental in shaping my future. As a proud new member of The 1880 Society, I am eager to witness the stories of fellow alumni and friends who choose to invest in the ongoing advancement of Southern University. I am profoundly grateful for the transformative experience I received at the University. The commitment to excellence I encountered in the Southern University Honors College, and the grace and leadership I developed as the 72nd Miss Southern University remain with me to this day. The guidance from the Southern University Career Services Center prepared me for my initial interview with Johnson & Johnson. I attribute much of my professional growth, culminating in my current role as Vice President of Specialty Operations at McKesson—a leader in healthcare and pharmaceutical distribution—to the foundation laid by my cherished alma mater.”
“My passion for counseling is driven by my commitment to improving mental health awareness and support within minority communities. I aim to provide guidance and resources to minority youth and individuals, fostering a safe space for healing and growth. Attending Southern University has been one of the best decisions of my life. I see God’s plan unfolding before my eyes as well as the incredible support and community He has placed around me. Thank you to all who donate to Southern University. Your generosity helps students like me pursue our dreams and creates meaningful change in the world.”
“Southern University provides a family environment that I will always cherish. The College of Business has afforded me the opportunities to grow, compete, and work to be the best student that I can be.
Receiving the Anna M. Jones 1880 Society scholarship has motivated me to be mindful to stay on course to complete a successful academic journey. It is important to give to Southern University because we need to uphold higher education, and support the mission and standard of our great University.”
