DESIGN BRIEF

AIM

To provide a safe and clean daycare facility in the residential area of Souther Delhi that aims to offer space for learning activities for young children. Two floors in the care center are separated by the kind of activity that takes place within. The separation of some zones and activities is a conscious decision by the designer and will be elaborated on in detail in this following report.

SCOPE

It is a redesigning project that is combining house numbers 688 (3BHK), 692 (2BHK) & 687 (2BHK) to create a space big enough for a daycare center. They are on the first floor & second floor of Pocket A Sarita Vihar. The proposed renovation would join both the flats and convert them into a creche or daycare center that is seamless to move around within by creating internal staircase. The proposed new daycare would be 5268 sq. ft in total area, which would contain 2346 of the ground floor and 2922 sq. ft of the first floor.

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOME

• Understanding the nature of caregiving character that daycare providers and the people I nvolved in operating such spaces. • Establishing a pattern of space utilization and ways to make them interactive for kids. • To gather knowledge about the various safety standards that are framed keeping child care centers.

DEMOGRAPHICS

• • • •

DESIGN BRIEF

INTENT

The intent is towards a space that is carefully designed keeping the child's psychology in the center. I want to provide a space that can allow parents to leave their kids here and be assured that their kids are growing. Some of the key focuses for this project will be color, mood, hygiene, play, and health.

SITE LOCATION

The site is located in a DDA residential pocket A, Sarita Vihar. It is situated in the rare end of the pocket and hence very quiet most of the day. There is are community markets within pocket A at walking distance. The roads within pocket A are wide and covered with trees on both sides. 1. H block market at a distance of 500 meters 2. B block market a distance of 300 meters 3. 3 big parks with a radius of 250 meters within pocket A 4. Sarita Vihar metro station is at a distance3 of 1100 meters

SITE CONTEXT

8

Khel Ghar - Minor Design Project (L6)

CLIMATE ANALYSIS (WIND)

The wind map around the site shows the prominent direction of the wind and the course of prevailing monsoon winds. KEY INFORMATION:-

W

Opening south-east façade is more preferable. Apartments are placed within a close proximity shading each other, hence reducing heat transfer in summers.

S

Cross ventilation can be provided considering the prominent wind direction.

CLIMATE ANALYSIS (SUN PATH)

Delhi is situated in central India and has a severe climate condition with high summer temperatures and cold winters. In the capital city, one can experience hot and humid temperatures most of the months.

W

Summers are hot in the month of mid-May to July followed by September with the rainy season. The average temperature in the summers of this capital city varies from 25°C to 45°C- 46°C.

S

The Winter season begins in November and lasts until late February. The average temperature in winters goes down as low to 3°C to even 2°C to 1°C. In winters, one can encounter cold weather as the city lies on the banks of the Yamuna River from where strong winds blow. The city’s Monsoon season is unpredictable as rains can start either from August or at the end of September.

SITE - SURROUNDING Looking towards the east on the back alley of the site we can see, extended fencing that is created to provide additional space for circulation. The same extensions help the ground floor dwellers to create a back door access point that can be directly used to check on water tanks at the end of the alley. It also serves as an informal place to sit and have a conversation in the house as observed by me during my analysis.

USER PERSONA + NEEDS

This project was completed during lockdown so taking a case study of daycare was impossible and hence to understand the people involved in the space I read a bunch of spaces online to develop people who were using the space and what broad classification they fell in. In the next step, I kept a track of the usual number of hours they invested in the daycare center. Later in this document are the information derived from the case studies is mentioned.

Who is using the space?

Sleep cycle for kids

31

Khel Ghar - Minor Design Project (L6)

Number of hours spent at the center

SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS (CHILDREN) From the user persona research, it was evident that a certain detail is given to the smaller zones within a bigger umbrella zone. There is a layer of safety majors that define what goes where and a lot of commonly shared zones between the spaces. This step gave me my initial indication of having a fluid plan because that way every child could benefit from the entirety of the daycare center. Some of the abbreviation mentioned here means the following:• I for Infant (6 weeks to 18 months) • YT for Young Toddlers (18 to 27 months) • OT for Older Toddlers (18 to 27 months) • PS for PreSchool (3 to 4 years) • AS After School (4 to 7 years)

KEYWORD MAPPING

51

Khel Ghar - Minor Design Project (L6)

CONCEPT SKETCHES (INTERIOR ELEMENTS) For the interiors, the focus was to make a space that looked different from the generic urban houses that these potential kids would come from. Some of which was to make a room for storytelling and theatrics. Making niches in furniture for kids to go inside and spend time. It would also create a sense of level difference that could help them do physical activities like jumping, climbing, stretching and cubbies which has an additional cushion padded back for kids to sit near them and gather around. One of the sketches also visualizes a sink system that appears to be floating in the air with different sink heights making it height appropriate for the fast-changing bodies of the little ones.

CONCEPT SKETCHES (BALCONY) For the balcony, the idea was to make it in a way that the kids can come and sit outside under the sky and study, paint and play. The vegetation would protect the kids from view and yet provide a space semi-outdoor experience.

CONCEPT SKETCHES (SECTION) Sectional sketches showing the relation between and across walls, with ideas about the kind, shape and tone of lightings used.

CONCEPT SKETCHES (DRAW ON SURFACE) This particular sketch talks about a tiny indoor garden that’s been created for the kids to enjoy. The site came with a challenge of having no access to outdoor playground. This lead to the creation of a openable glass partition that can give visual connection to the outdoors at all times. Adding a layer of playfulness, the glass partition can be a surface where kids can come and paste coloured vinyl sheets on the surface and doodle on top of them. It than becomes a participatory art installation, additionally the daylight that comes in gets coloured as well making the space a all time rainbow.

CONCEPT SKETCHES (FURNITURE MERGE) Most of the urban homes have simple furniture that follows straight lines, the idea here was to challenge them and make a language where an element merges into another. Like in this sketch the shelving merges into the floor and then to the ceiling. This new surface that has been created by the act of merging can then to used as an additional surface to play. Now, this would give the children liberty to decide what they want to do on these surfaces, they can hide there, sit on top, climb up and down, jump from edge to edge.
