SUSANNA TANNER PHOTORAPHY
SOULFUL. ELEGANT. SIMPLISTIC.
While photojournalism is the technique that forms the base layer of documenting a portrait session, I take an active role in directing, lighting and composing to make sure each photograph reflects the true beauty of you, your surroundings and the moments in between.
I’ve always believed in simplicity, truthfulness and a bit of adventure, and it’s with these things that I visually tell your story. It’s a personal alchemy—equal parts photojournalism, motion, contrast, light and depth—that creates exquisite images of you.
Us being comfortable with each other is key in capturing the kind of images you’ll want to look at over and over again.

When styling clients I tend to pick more neutral colors as a base, and then begin layering textures and colors. Adding a pop of color into your accessories can take a basic look and turn it into an incredible outfit. Pick cohesive colors and looks so that your gallery will be a complete collection and you’ll find each color palette compliments the next. Three places easy and fun to incorporate color are shoes, jewelry, and lipstick!

show your STYLE
You've been thinking about this photo shoot for a long time, right? So don’t wait until the night before to begin your planning your outfits. Photo shoots go best when there’s the least amount of stress, and planning early is just smart! Clothing and accessories help define who you are, but you’ll also need to coordinate with the locations you’ve chosen. If you need help with styling, bring extra options on the day of and I’ll help you complete your look.
It’s always fun to pick out new clothes for your shoot, but also include your go-to favorite items from your closet. Remain loyal to your style must have’s and you’ll be comfortable and more relaxed in front of the camera.
ACCESSORIZE
The small details are the best part of styling a session. Dress simplistic then add accessories and layers to create visual interest. A bold necklace, a funky hat, or big earrings are great—but you’ll want to wear one at a time. Bring them all with you though. Just remember, less is more. We want the main attraction to be your face and everything else simply compliments you. Bring jackets, scarves, cardigans, etc.. to turn one outfit into two. Some things you might not think about bringing and should consider are strapless bras, bralettes, sticky bras, hairspray, comb/brush, bobby pins, and touch-up makeup including lipstick, powder, etc...One last thing, if you’re considering painting your nails, you might want to opt for a clear coat or french. We want all eyes on your face, and nails with color tend to distract the eye.
the best version of YOU
I get it. Having someone hold up a camera in front of your face is a little intimidating, but don’t worry—your images are going to be amazing. I want you to be blown away by how beautiful you really are, by how beautiful I see you to be. As you prepare for your photo shoot there are a few more things to consider when thinking ahead: do you need to tidy up your eyebrows, have you steamed your clothing, will you have your nails done or your hair highlighted? Guys, do you need a haircut (about a week ahead of time), will you shave or have scruff? And what about rest? Sounds crazy I know, but getting a good nights sleep the night before your shoot makes for a better experience and you’ll look more refreshed in your photos. I also suggest you have a light snack before your shoot and save the big meal for after.
WARDROBE DO'S
Compliment the Setting: Wear teatures and colors that compliment the location.
Wear clothes that fit well: If you feel comfortable, you’ll look natural and at ease.
Dress kids in clothes they love: If the kids are happy, everyone is happy.
Wear complimentary colors: Use a limited color palette that compliments complexions and what others in the photo are wearing.
Wear prints wisely: Medium to large prints are best. Try mixing with solids to balance things.
Pin it up to get a great tailored look: Clip loose areas to perfect the fit of off-the-rack clothing.
Wear underewar that is easy to conceal: You don’t want underwear to be visible through tight or lightcolored skirts, etc.

What to DO, What to AVOID
Research! I know, that isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it’s important to set aside time to think about what locations fit your style best, and what ideas might appeal to you. Browse Pinterest if you aren’t sure.
Take care of your body. Bring lip balm, makeup or hair products, a snack, and water. Get a good nights sleep the night before and take extra care of your face the week prior to your session. Make sure your outfits are wrinklefree and placed on a hanger, including your jewelry.
• Sunburns, tan lines and spray tan blotchiness
• The wrong foundation color (match your neck)
• Revealing clothes and bra straps
• Bad nails
• New hairstyles or colors
• Wrinkled fabric
WORD ON THE STREET...

Susanna was great to work with. Her professionalism and expertise helped to ease worries about getting photos taken professionally. She took time to meet and get to know us. She worked with us on a location that was special. There was a balance between posed photos and candid moments. She was organized and knew exactly what she was doing to truly capture a big moment. We were in good hands! We selected a package that included an album and we couldn’t be more pleased with the quality and design of the album. In the end, we upgraded and bought all the photographs. If you are looking for an experienced and professional photographer look no further—Susanna is the best choice.

BOOKING
It’s best to begin the process with a consultation, either in person or on the phone thesummerbeforeyour senioryearbegins We’ll design a personal session just for you. Once I have a clear idea of the type of images you’re wanting, and the locations, we can decide what time of day is best. Typically, shooting in the evening is preferable since the sun casts a softer glow.
After we choose a date(s), you’ll fill out an online contract and pay a sitting fee of $250. (This does not include hair and make-up). As for what you purchase, the menu is a la carte so if you want to spend $200 you can and if you want to spend $2,000 can. The point is, it’s up to you. You won’t actually make that decision until you’re looking at the finished portraits during your reveal and ordering session.
Your scheduled date is not reserved until your contract is signed and returned, and the sitting fee is received. In the event you need to reschedule your session it is required you do so within one week of your session, otherwise a $75 rescheduling fee will be charged. Sessions postponed due to weather do not apply.

I wish all clients knew...
Pinterest is Great, but....
Everyone loves Pinterest, me included, but keep in mind that Pinterest is a collection of the best images out there. It’s not a whole senior collection. Go ahead and get inspired, find ideas! But I urge you to break away from copying ideas and instead make your own come to life.
What Takes So Long?
I understand everyone wants to see their images as soon as possible, but please realize a lot of work goes into your images after your photo shoot. Every photo is sifted through, and if kept, is edited to make sure the exposure and coloring is correct. Once that is finished some light retouching is done.
Light Matters
The most important component of photography is light. It can make the difference between fresh, gorgeous images and dull, dark images. When planning your photo shoot, consider time of day and light. The more natural light, the better!
Communicate
Don’t expect your photographer to know everything about you, who is most important to you, or details that are significant. Tell them about special items and special people so nothing is left out of your photos.
Be Prepared
It really does make a difference. If you arrive at your shoot unorganized and stressed, it will show on your face. Allow for some extra time to get ready, just in case. Bring more outfits than what you think you’ll need, just in case. I know you’ve heard it before but drink lots of water the day of the shoot and get a good 8 hours the night before. It really does make a difference in your on camera appearance.
