JOHN LOWRIE MORRISON OBE

We are delighted and honoured to welcome back to the Strathearn Gallery, John Lowrie Morrison OBE, affectionately known as Jolomo, for a new Solo Exhibition of paintings.

John has a career spanning over 50 years and he is now rightfully recognised as one of Scotland’s greatest landscape painters of all time.

With the Strathearn Gallery celebrating its’ 30th anniversary this year and John being an exhibitor and supporter of the gallery from the outset, we are thrilled to be able to continue our longstanding relationship with John and to showcase the work of an artist of this calibre.

John’s instantly recognisable work is brimming with life and emotion, with deft brushstrokes applying intensely bold and vivid colours to capture a sense of connection and of being in a place like no other.

Photography by Simon Morrison

This exhibition of over 40 new paintings focuses on John’s lifelong obsession and love of the sea. Although always considered a ‘landscape’ painter, nearly all of John’s paintings feature the sea in some form and it is this long Morrison family connection with the coast and sea that is explored further here.

The new work as always promises to enchant art enthusiasts and collectors alike with a mesmerising portrayal of Scotland’s coast, landscape and rich cultural heritage.

We look forward to seeing you in the gallery.

MORRISON & THE SEA - THE ROCKS - THE

‘This title represents what I’m about … THE SEA

Although I’m a landscape painter .. the painting nearly always contains The SEA. The sea seems to be in my ‘blood’ !

Why is it in my blood ?

My Father Murdo as a boy was always going up to the family on Harris to work on the Fishing Boats that were plying The Minch … he was always telling me great stories of the Hebridean fishermen. As a wee boy I soaked this up and wanted to go live on Harris.

This has stayed with me all my life.

At the back of last year I was contacted from cousin the Rev. Iain Morrison the Pastor in Oban. He informed me that he had gone through some records to find that our Great Grandfather was a Light – Keepers Assistant working all over Scotland.

I couldn’t believe it - my Great Grandfather was a Lighthouse Keeper !!

He worked on the lighthouse on Isle of May .. Little Ross .. Ushenish in 1863

All my life I’ve loved Lighthouses and the Sea … from Tighnabruaich’s wee Lighthouse Eilean Dubh light in 1956 – to my trip on a fast Rib to The Bell Rock Lighthouse in 1969.

No wonder I love Lighthouses.

No wonder I love the Sea.

No wonder I love to paint them.

No wonder I have the sea in my blood!’
