Annual Report 2024 - 2025

It’s all thanks to you.

Message from Chair

Surrey is on the cusp of becoming the largest city in British Columbia. With that growth, comes a significant responsibility to ensure that our health care system not only keeps up, but leads the way forward.

At Surrey Hospitals Foundation, we take that responsibility seriously. As the official health care foundation serving communities from Tsawwassen to Abbotsford, we are committed to supporting a complete and connected health care system for the over one million residents south of the Fraser. That means focusing not just on today’s needs, but also on what will be required in the decades to come.

The realities facing health care across the province—rising demand, aging infrastructure, and workforce strain—are complex. But here in Surrey, we also see incredible opportunity.

With the right long-term vision and sustained investment, we have the chance to build out Surrey as a true regional centre: one that delivers care closer to home, across every stage of life.

This past year, we’ve seen what’s possible when donors, health leaders and governments work together with a shared purpose. As a Board, we remain focused on governance that supports this momentum. Ensuring transparency, accountability, and strategic stewardship of resources.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your continued belief in this work. Your support is helping shape a healthier future for the generations who live, work, and raise families across our region.

Message from CEO

Since the last annual report, one word comes to mind when I want to describe our past year at Surrey Hospitals Foundation: momentum.

Thanks to our donors, partners, and health care teams, we’ve made meaningful strides in advancing care across our region. The announcement of a second Acute Care Tower at Surrey Memorial Hospital marks a vital expansion of services in one of B.C.’s fastest-growing communities. Construction is well underway on a renal centre that will increase access by 55%— with design focused on both patient comfort and clinical function.

By year’s end, Surrey Memorial Hospital will also house two new cardiac catheterization labs—making urgent heart care more accessible and establishing the hospital as the regional cardiac centre for the one million residents south of the Fraser. Thanks to your support together, we’ve helped deliver elevated services, expanded access to mental health services, advanced MRI technology and funded innovations benefitting patients and families across all our health sites, from the Czorny Alzheimer Centre to the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre.

This momentum is real, but so are the challenges. Surrey continues its path to becoming the largest city in British Columbia. The demand for responsive, integrated care is growing fast. And yet, amid these realities, our purpose remains clear.

We’re here for you.

This promise guides everything we do—and it’s why we remain committed to advocating, investing, and partnering in ways that create lasting impact across generations. As the City of Surrey’s official health care foundation serving the people south of the Fraser, we are proud to be able to support you and your families.

The path forward is full of promise. Surrey is uniquely positioned to deliver a complete health care ecosystem—from preventative care to specialized treatment and end-of-life support. Because we know what’s possible when this city comes together.

To all who have contributed to this past year’s progress: thank you. The work continues and we’re just getting started.

Our Facilities and Impact

Surrey Memorial Hospital

Surrey Memorial Hospital is the largest of three regional hospitals in Fraser Health’s integrated network of care, providing primary, secondary, and tertiary services, including 24/7 emergency. As a regional hospital for Fraser Health, and the home hospital for one of B.C.’s fastest growing communities, Surrey Memorial Hospital serves patients through the province’s busiest Emergency Department.

Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre

Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC) relieves pressures on our health care system by consolidating services that don’t require an overnight stay into one stand-alone facility. The Centre provides a complete range of scheduled outpatient services, including day surgery, diagnostic services and specialized health clinics.

New Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre in Cloverdale

The new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre will be a state-of-the-art, fully electric facility, the first of its kind in B.C, designed to meet the urgent and future health care needs of Surrey’s rapidly growing population. It will integrate advanced digital and virtual care, enabling treatment both in-hospital and at home and offer services including emergency, surgery, diagnostics, inpatient and outpatient care, pharmacy and comprehensive cancer care.

Czorny Alzheimer Centre

Czorny Alzheimer Centre offers a safe home for 72 dementia patients and is specially designed to provide both psychological security and comfort. Located in a quiet rural setting, this long-term care home, consisting of six 12room cottage living spaces, is tranquil by design. The architecture reflects an innovative, holistic, person-centered approach to dementia care.

Through the generosity of our donors, we also support the UBC School of Medicine, Carelife Fleetwood Residential Care, Creekside Withdrawal Management Centre, Laurel Place Care Centre, and the Surrey Youth Clinic.

Introducing our Pillars of Care

Health care needs are growing and changing across the city of Surrey, and we’re responding by expanding our focus.

Instead of spotlighting one priority at a time, our Pillars of Care approach allows us to make meaningful progress across many areas at once. This ensures we can keep improving care throughout the entire network of health care facilities serving our communities south of the Fraser.

Each of the six pillars reflects a specialized area of care that donors can support. You can give to the pillar that’s closest to your heart, or to the areas of greatest need—where your gift can have the most immediate and lasting impact.

Chronic Diseases and Therapy

Helps people manage conditions like cancer, diabetes, heart and kidney disease with personalized, lifelong care. Your support expands access to innovative treatments, outpatient services, and future facilities such as the new renal centre and cardiac centre.

Mental Wellbeing

Funds acute mental health care and crisis services for all ages. Donations enhance programs like art and pet therapy, as well as sustain life-saving services such as the Surrey Mental Health and Substance Use Urgent Care Response Centre and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU).

Elder Care

Provides older adults with compassionate, communitybased care—whether they need long-term support, stroke rehab, or dementia care. Your support enhances care homes and specialized programs that help seniors live fully and independently.

Women, Children and Youth

Supports specialized care for women, from pregnancy through postpartum, and for children across a range of health needs. Donor funding helps grow maternity services, neonatal care, women’s health programs such as the Breast Health Clinic at Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, and childfocused spaces like the Pediatric Emergency Department and the Children’s Health Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Specialized Care, Surgery and Outpatient Care

Equips our surgical teams with leading-edge tools to deliver faster, safer procedures. You help expand outpatient care, improve emergency services, and reduce recovery times.

Research, Innovation, Education and Training

Drives the future of care in our region. Donor funding supports clinical research, medical education, and training facilities that prepare the next generation of health care professionals—close to home.

Robotics: The Future of Surgery

Specialized Care, Surgery and Outpatient Care

This past year, Surrey Hospitals Foundation received an extraordinary gift of $1.47 million from Dave and Tammy Ritchie, a father-daughter team with deep roots in the Surrey community.

Their generosity is helping to bring the da Vinci Xi Surgical Robot to Surrey Memorial Hospital, advancing the hospital’s efforts to establish a Regional Robotic Surgery Program—making Surrey home to one of only four da Vinci Xi surgical robots in the province.

This technology will enable more precise, less invasive procedures and faster recovery times, allowing patients across the Fraser Health region to stay closer to home during critical moments in their care.

“Like most families, ours has been cared for at Surrey Memorial Hospital during times of need,” shares Tammy. “We’re inspired by the vision to make Surrey a regional centre for surgical excellence. Helping to fund the surgical robot is our way of supporting that future.”

For Dave and Tammy, giving back is more than a gesture—it’s a deeply held family value. Their longstanding commitment to supporting community causes spans over four decades. Their philanthropy has been both focused and far-reaching, always rooted in compassion.

While their giving is deeply personal, the Ritchie legacy also reflects a remarkable Canadian business story.

Having built a company that became the world’s largest industrial equipment auctioneer, their success is truly global, yet their roots remain firmly planted here in B.C.

It is their local impact that speaks loudest through this gift. As longtime Surrey residents, the Ritchie family’s generosity reflects the values that define this city: care, family and looking out for one another.

Grateful Couple Gifts to Stroke Rehabilitation

Elder Care

When White Rock residents Stan and Nancy Thompson retired a few years ago, they wasted no time in checking things off their bucket list. After 30 years of raising a family and running a business together, they were ready to see the world. Their travels took them throughout Europe, on small boat cruises in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, and to their winter home in Arizona.

“We always said we better get things done now, because you never know when something was going to come up and bite you,” recalls Stan. “And then it did. The surprise was that it was Nancy who had never been sick more than two days in her life.”

In fall 2024, Nancy had a stroke. After a week in acute care at Surrey Memorial Hospital, she was moved to the hospital’s Stroke Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Laurel Place Care Centre, where she spent five weeks working to regain her independence.

“Truthfully, Nancy didn’t have a very good quality life when she first arrived at Laurel Place. She could move around a little bit but not much,” says Stan. “When she left five weeks later, she walked out of there with a walker. Now she has an increasingly very good quality of life. We try to get down to the beach for a walk every day and she’s back to having lunch with her girlfriends.

The Thompsons credit Nancy’s recovery to her determination—and the care she received. “We couldn’t have better things to say about the therapists at Laurel Place. They genuinely care.”

To give back, Stan and Nancy donated $25,000 to Surrey Hospitals Foundation to support therapy needs. “We wanted to help them out a little bit.”

Kirmac Cares for Kids Transforms Children’s Health Centre

Women, Children and Youth

Surrey Hospitals Foundation is deeply grateful for the support of Kirmac Collision & Autoglass’s charitable program, Kirmac Cares for Kids. Since 2020, the McIntosh family and Kirmac’s customers, employees, and business partners have helped support the Children’s Health Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Kirmac Cares for Kids made a transformative gift of $250,000 to support much needed renovations of the Children’s Health Centre. This past November, we celebrated their generosity by unveiling the Kirmac Cares for Kids Play Spaces - two designated areas designed to bring comfort, connection, and moments of joy to children and their families as they navigate their health journeys. This investment reflects Kirmac’s deep commitment to nurturing the well-being of future generations and ensuring that every child feels safe, supported, and cared for.

Surrey Memorial Hospital plays a critical role as the regional centre for children’s health services as the Fraser Health region is home to over 41% of BC’s children and youth, including 25% residing south of the Fraser. Through Kirmac Cares for Kids, the McIntosh family has created a continuum of care for children in our region, strengthening the foundation for pediatric health care close to home. This is a powerful reminder that when businesses lead with compassion, they help build healthier, stronger communities.

A Birthday Gift Rooted in Gratitude and Community

Chronic Diseases and Therapy

When Raminder Grewal turned 50 last November, he didn’t want presents. Instead, he marked the milestone with a personal donation of $50,000 to Surrey Hospitals Foundation, in gratitude for the care his family has received over the years.

For Raminder and Rav, giving back is deeply personal. Years ago, when his eldest daughter developed a serious heart condition as a child, it was the health-care teams at Surrey Memorial Hospital who guided them through the crisis. “They were friendly and caring. It was a stressful time as a parent,” he recalls. “But we never felt alone.”

That experience stayed with the family. Giving soon became a tradition. His daughters, Punum and Neelum, now 19 and 22, grew up donating birthday money to the Foundation—learning early on the value of generosity and care.

“It’s always been part of our family conversations,” says Raminder. “We’ve made it a point to show our kids the importance of giving where you live and shaping the future of your city.”

To celebrate his 50th, Raminder not only made a personal gift but also set up a birthday fundraiser to encourage friends and relatives to contribute.

“Giving back to Surrey Hospitals Foundation is our way of saying thank you to a hospital that has supported our loved ones,” he says. “This donation is a gesture of gratitude to ensure others across the Fraser Health region receive the same care, comfort and support our family has experienced.”

Now, his daughters, Punum and Neelum, are leading the charge— rallying relatives, helping decide where to direct the funds, and inspiring others to support the city they call home.

“We love our neighbourhood, our schools, our city—giving back to our hospital just makes sense.”

Students Learn the Joy of Giving

Women, Children and Youth

At Lena Shaw Elementary and Newton Elementary, giving back is more than a oneday event—it’s the beginning of a lifelong tradition of community care.

On March 14, students and staff at Lena Shaw Elementary marked Pi Day (3.14) with a deliciously fun twist: instead of solving math problems, students raised $2,025 for Surrey Hospitals Foundation by tossing pies in the faces of good-natured teachers. The event was a joyful celebration of giving, with proceeds supporting the Children’s Health Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

At Newton Elementary, the spirit of giving has been part of the school’s culture for more

than 30 years. Each year, students choose a cause that matters to them—and this year, they chose the Children’s Health Centre, after a few of their classmates received care there.

The entire fundraising initiative was led by a Grade 6 class, who designed a campaign that was fun, inclusive and personal. Some students gave up their pizza or chip money to contribute. And when they fell just short of their $2,000 goal, their teachers stepped in to close the gap.

“It was amazing to see that with what little money the kids had, how much they wanted to be a part of this,” said one teacher. The campaign helped unite the school and

sparked real excitement about making a difference. Since then, students have been asking to do it again—and even hope to build a mentorship program to grow the tradition.

In the spirit of seva—the South Asian principle of selfless service—these young changemakers are learning early that community care can be joyful and empowering.

Ijin’s First Birthday Area

of Greatest Need

When Ijin turned one, his family celebrated the milestone not with presents, but with purpose. They donated $365 to Surrey Hospitals Foundation—one dollar for each day of his first year of life.

Born at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Ijin is one of thousands of babies delivered there each year. His family’s gift was their way of giving back to the place that supported them at the very beginning of their journey.

It’s a gesture that shows how even small donations can make a lasting impact. Acts of gratitude like this help foster a culture of generosity in our community, reminding us that giving isn’t just about the amount—it’s about the intention.

Every day, an average of 16 babies are born at Surrey Memorial Hospital. That’s equivalent to a kindergarten class every two days. Community support ensures that these newborns and their families continue to receive highquality care, close to home.

By choosing to mark Ijin’s first birthday with a donation, his family is helping build a healthier future for Surrey, one day—and one dollar—at a time.

Inaugural Neonatal Conference

Research, Innovation, Education and Training

With close to 6,000 births each year, the Family Birthing Unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital delivers a new kindergarten class every one and a half days. Already the busiest birthing unit in Fraser Health, it is on track to become the busiest in B.C. within the next couple of years.

Beyond being busy, SMH is also the regional centre for maternal care. It is a designated “level three” hospital for neonatal services, which is the highest level of specialized care. Ten per cent of babies born at SMH will be premature or have serious health issues that require care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It is also one of only three hospitals in B.C. who can treat a mother experiencing health complications with a baby born at less than 23 weeks old. When Drs. Yasser Elsayed and Samer Yousfi made a request to SHF to fund an inaugural conference to bring a cross-section of

neonatal care providers together to share and explore best practices in care for NICU babies, the Foundation readily agreed. “Research, innovation, education and training” represents one of the Foundation’s “Pillars of Care”, a framework to help donors understand the six broad areas of health care that SHF prioritizes in its fundraising.

On February 7, 2025, nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other health care providers from hospitals across the region gathered at Surrey Memorial Hospital for the inaugural Surrey Memorial Hospital Neonatal Care Conference. Leading neonatal experts from across North America joined the speaker line-up including two presentations from Dr. Jonathan Klein, Professor Emeritus from the University of Iowa who discussed breakthrough practices that have provided Iowa hospitals with remarkable outcomes for very premature babies born at 22-23 weeks.

“Our neonatal team at Surrey Memorial is leading the way in providing the safest, most advanced care for pre-term and very pre-term infants born in the South Fraser region... Thanks to our donors, health care providers are actively building excellence in neonatal care at SMH as well as expanding this expertise across Fraser Health, ensuring more teams are equipped with these critical skills.”

Champion of the Crescent:

Presented by EllisDon

Mental Wellbeing

The waters of Semiahmoo Bay transformed on July 13 into a bustling hub of excitement. We welcomed 28 teams from across the Lower Mainland to Blackie Spit Park at Crescent Beach in South Surrey to compete in epic water relays for Champion of the Crescent, our annual paddle board event presented by EllisDon. With the community’s support, $218,346 was raised in support of youth mental health programs.

These vital funds will directly support youth through programs such as art therapy, therapeutic writing, and sensory interventions, helping them navigate some of life’s toughest moments with the care they need.

Celebration of Care Gala: Presented by Berezan and EllisDon

Specialized Care, Surgery and Outpatient Care

On February 22, our Celebration of Care Gala - Tales in the Woods, presented by Berezan and EllisDon, welcomed close to 500 of Surrey’s business, community, medical, and philanthropic luminaries at the Aria Convention Centre. With the community’s support, we raised over $1.53 million to establish a surgical robotics program at SMH.

The funds will contribute to the acquisition of a state-of-theart da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System, empowering worldclass surgeons to perform advanced, minimally invasive surgeries for complex ear, nose, throat, lung, and chest procedures, and establishing Surrey Memorial Hospital as the regional centre south of the Fraser for surgical robotics.

We extend our gratitude to our Gala Committee, Board of Directors, our volunteers; our long list of amazing sponsors; and of course, all our guests!
