CELEBRATING OUR HEROES OVER 30 YEARS!
ANNUAL REPORT 2021 - 2022

VISION
VISION
Our vision is to be Canada’s unstoppable force for life-changing health care.
We have a mission to inspire and enable our community to support innovative, life-changing health care.
• World-class health care should be accessible to all.
• Everyone deserves holistic health care from birth to end-of-life.
• In never giving up on your health.
Founded in 1992, Surrey Hospitals Foundation has always been committed to bringing unstoppable, life-changing health care to Surrey.
In the past 30 years, Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s donors have supported important projects such as:
2011 2013

Surrey Hospitals Foundation (SHF) is the largest non-government funder of health care for families in Surrey.
PRIORITY AREAS
In addition to our fundraising campaigns, we also support ongoing priorities in the hospital (see details on the next page).
DONATIONS TO SPECIFIC AREAS
Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre 10th Anniversary Campaign, Surgery Campaign, ongoing COVID-19 Response Campaign.
GRANTS
Our grants supported clinics and units across our facilities including enhancing care to patients, providing warm food and care items to vulnerable populations, purchasing equipment, and funding education for staff.
At Surrey Hospitals Foundation, we believe that world-class health care should be accessible to all of our residents. Since our inception thirty years ago, we have worked alongside our community to invest in services and facilities that expand services to our community, recruit and retain the best talent, and support our most vulnerable patients.
A FEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED WITH COMMUNITY SUPPORT INCLUDE:
• Funded Canada’s first Forensic Nursing Program
• Funded BC’s first single room maternity unit
• Funded Surrey’s first Children’s Health Centre
• Funded Surrey’s first outpatient centre
• Funded Fraser Health’s first 3T MRI
• Funded Surrey’s first IR suite to treat cancer
• Funded BC’s first integrated operating rooms
• Funded Fraser Health’s first academic chair in brain health, in partnership with Simon Fraser University
• Funded Fraser Health’s first Clinical Research Unit, focused on critical care
• Funded BC’s largest and most innovative stabilization unit for children and teens in mental health crises
Support for pediatric health, mental health, cancer and research continue to be on Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s list of ongoing priorities.
Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) provides specialized care to families in our community, from birth to end-of-life. SMH is a significant regional hospital for Fraser Health, and the local hospital for one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing communities.
Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC) relieves pressures on our healthcare system by consolidating services that don’t require an overnight stay, into one stand-alone facility.
The Centre provides a complete range of scheduled outpatient services, including day surgery, diagnostic services and specialized health clinics.
Cloverdale’s Czorny Alzheimer Centre offers a safe home for 72 dementia patients and is specially designed to provide both psychological security and comfort. Located in a quiet rural setting, this long-term care home, consisting of six, 12-room cottage living spaces, is tranquil by design: the architecture reflects an innovative, holistic, person-centred approach to dementia care.
This year, the Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary. In just three decades, dedicated volunteers and donors have raised over $200 million for unstoppable health care in Surrey. Community action in support of health care has a long history in our city.
Even before the creation of the Foundation in 1992, donors were the catalyst for hospital expansion. In the 1940s, WW2 veterans and their families, who were settling in North Surrey in record numbers, had no hospital. The veterans, their wives, and their friends formed an auxiliary and worked tirelessly for a decade to raise half the total cost of Surrey Memorial’s construction—a requirement of the government at the time.
The Foundation has proudly assumed this legacy of courage, generosity, and advocacy. Guided by the vison of our medical community and championed by the generosity of our local community, we’ve celebrated many milestones. Donors have helped construct our Children’s Health Centre, hire our first pediatric oncologist, restore eyesight, cure cancer, and fight COVID-19.
Since our inception, the impact of donors has improved the lives of millions of people. With your help, we can continue to ensure that the best available health care is there for people through every stage of their lives.
Surrey’s future is bright. It is the fastest growing large city in Western Canada. It is also BC’s youngest city, with one in three residents under the age of 19. Surrey mothers deliver more children than any other jurisdiction, topping 6,000 births last year. Soon Surrey will boast the presence of two medical schools, and plans are underway for a new digital hospital and continued development at Surrey Memorial.
We look forward to working with you over the next 30 years to ensure our residents have a health care ecosystem built and staffed to meet the growing and complex needs of our large, diverse, and vibrant city.

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the award-winning Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, the Foundation launched a renewal campaign.
Jimmy Pattison, the Centre’s namesake, stepped forward and made the initial gift of $4 million. He invited Fraser Valley residents to join him in supporting this health care jewel. Fortunately, more than 2,700 donors from throughout BC came together to help us reach our $4 million public goal, raising a total of $8 million.
Donations to this campaign will help purchase and renew important diagnostic equipment at the Centre. Investment in innovative, life-saving equipment not only helps better diagnose and treat patients, but also helps us attract and retain the best medical talent from around the world.
During this campaign, we welcomed many new donors to Surrey Hospitals Foundation, and renewed support from our loyal donors. We heard inspiring stories of exceptional care provided at the Centre’s more than 50 clinics, where over 3 million people have received care in the past decade.
We thank each and every donor who stepped up to meet the $4 million matching challenge, and Mr. Pattison for his leadership gift.
The pandemic brought many new challenges to hospitals. As the busiest COVID-19 hospital in British Columbia, Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) was particularly challenged. Not only did SMH’s medical teams have enormous experience, they were also very successful and had among the best COVID-19 survival outcomes in the world. With their success, they recognized that they had a critical role and responsibility to conduct research and find solutions. The challenge for SMH was building research infrastructure fast enough to be an active participant in the rapidly paced research environment that marked the pandemic.
Donors were a big part of the solution. The Foundation, using donor dollars, challenged Michael Smith Health Research BC, a preeminent funder of high quality medical research, to invest in the creation of the SMH Clinical Research Unit. In creating the SMH Clinical Research Unit, donors have leveraged research and discovery on an unprecedented scale.
The Surrey Unit is a first for Fraser Health, and Surrey’s medical teams can now work smarter with research findings in hand while SMH is continuing to attract world-class staff, setting the stage for becoming a centre of excellence.
Retinal diseases and conditions are quickly becoming the number one cause of blindness in the developed world. As our population continues to age, demands for vitreoretinal surgery by our surgical team grows. The Surrey Retina Surgical Associates group is the busiest medical and surgical retinal practice in BC, providing surgical services at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) and Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC).
To support this increasing demand, Surrey Hospitals Foundation funded a $243,000 state-of-the-art Surgical Vitrectomy System, the first of its kind in BC.
The Surgical Vitrectomy System provides significant improvement to the surgeons’ field of vison and outcomes. It also extends a surgeon’s career by offering an ergonomic option that spares their backs. With the profound shortage of retinal surgeons, this is a critical workforce issue.
Finally, the Surgical Vitrectomy System is an important teaching tool. The dualheaded microscope enables the expert surgeons at SMH to train ophthalmologists from all over the world who travel to Surrey for one year of advanced retinal training with the SMH team. The current trainee is from Ghana.
From health care heroes to donors, the Foundation is proud to highlight some of our heroes’ stories over the past 30 years. See how our heroes have made a tremendous difference for the community.
Canada can boast of the Group of 7, but Surrey has its own exceptional Group of 9. A group of nine medical superstars that are unstoppable in their dedication to Surrey’s seniors. G9, as they are fondly called, are dedicated to ensuring that our frail elderly patients receive the best possible care in the most appropriate setting.
Surrey has a profound shortage of family physicians. In 2009, the last year BC published numbers of doctors per capita, Surrey had the lowest ratio of family physicians in BC. Surrey had only 59 family physicians per 100,000 residents compared to the BC average of 112; far below Vancouver’s 136 doctors.
This historical shortage negatively impacts the health of Surrey’s frail elderly patients because family physicians are required to oversee the transfer of patients from hospitals to long term care facilities and oversee their care post transfer. The shortage of doctors resulted in delayed transfers and elderly patients staying unduly long in acute care settings.
The Group of 9 coalesced around this challenge. They began assuming responsibility for transferring seniors from Surrey Memorial Hospital to long term care, ensuring the transfers were timely and safe. Additionally, they also assumed ongoing care for the seniors once the long term care facility became home. Their leadership ensured seniors were receiving the right care in the best place and that hospital beds were available for acutely ill patients.
G9’s model of care was so effective that the Government of BC learned from its structure when creating a plan to improve care for seniors throughout the entire province.
Continued on next page
When government made a move to improve care in facilities with the Long Term Care Initiative, the challenge remained to be the lack of doctors, and care homes struggled to ensure appropriate medical care was provided. G9 had already been doing this work for a number of years and some local communities came to them to see what they were doing. G9 has gone on to recruit other physicians as well to provide this care. Since its formation, some G9 physicians have retired and G9 has recruited other younger physicians to join their group and provide this care, thus ensuring succession.
Many G9 members are actively involved with the Surrey North Delta Division of Family Practice to improve primary care delivery in our community.
While the pressure for primary care continues, Dr. Blinkhorn, one of the members of the G9, says that he appreciates the collegial nature of the G9 group where physicians help with coverage when someone is away. With all of the G9 physicians involved with facilities, the group continues to address proactive care and long term care initiatives to improve quality of care.
Members of the G9 include Dr. Mark Blinkhorn, Dr. Sandra Derkach, Dr. David Luk, Dr. Darryl Samoil, Dr. Mark Green, Dr. Felix Yang, Dr. Chris Cox, Dr. Brianna Noon, and Dr. Marie Di Cesare.
“I’ve always been taught to give back where you can,” says Kevin Johal who, along with his wife Sonia Johal and Bravaya Homes, donated $25,000 to Surrey Hospitals Foundation for the purchase of a pediatric ultrasound.
Kevin’s commitment to Surrey Memorial Hospital comes from a lifelong relationship with the hospital where he, his wife and their children were all born. The care the family received at the Children’s Health Centre and Family Birthing Unit was everything they had hoped it would be.
Even in difficult times, such as the passing of his grandmother, the family has been touched by the quality of care at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
“We really appreciate the help of the nurses and doctors. If we can somehow make their lives easier, it’s our duty to do that where we can. Every little bit helps. It’s important to me to support SMH because I feel the hospital is the most important part of our city. And being from here, I feel it is a responsibility for people in the city to take care of their own city. It takes people in the community to help others in the community.”
With their support in purchasing a new pediatric ultrasound, young patients at Surrey Memorial Hospital can now feel more comfortable during procedures like needles or emergency IV insertions.
The Grewal family has long taught their children to give back to the community. Since they were little girls, Neelum and Punum Grewal have been raising money through birthday celebrations and other activities to benefit patients at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
Mom, Rav, a teacher, and dad, Raminder, an environmental engineer, credit their extended family and friends for sharing the desire to support the hospital to help people in their time of need.
In 2021, a friend of Rav’s received treatment at Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit before passing away from a rare form of cancer. The Grewal family came together with their dear friends, the Gill, Hans, Kaila, Kooner, Lehal, Showra and Sidhu families, to make a gift of $15,345 with the hope of helping cancer research and programs. Punum and Neelum, along with their friends, also honoured their grandparents with an $11,800 donation to the Czorny Alzheimer Centre and the Acute Care for Elders unit.
For the family, it’s important to see the next generation making a close connection with the hospital over the years.
“Help is one of the most important factors in our lives,” says Rav. “What better way to help the community than by donating to the hospital – something that will help everyone.”
The driving force in Liz da Silva’s career was a simple desire to make life better for patients. That was her goal every day when she became a Fraser Health dietitian in 1989.
Liz was a passionate life-long learner always wanting to do more. Inspired and driven by her pursuit of knowledge she reached out to the Fraser Health Department of Evaluation and Research Services (DERS) in 2010 with an idea about doing a research project on Vitamin D and adults with heart failure. She had no previous experience in research, but undeterred, she successfully completed that first study.
Encouraged by that first project and excited about the potential of doing more research, Liz completed her Masters degree in 2013 to be better prepared to facilitate further research. In 2016, Liz served as Fraser Health’s first ever Research Dietitian. She made an impact on dietary practice and tirelessly mentored other dietitians to become researchers. Her research on the role of vitamins and minerals in Gerontology and chronic disease impacted dietetic practice across Canada.
When Liz became ill with Cancer a second time, she met with DERS and Surrey Hospitals Foundation staff to set up an endowment to facilitate future research in dietetics. Her dream was that front line dietitians would be encouraged and awarded grants to pursue their first foray into research that would hopefully lead to new practice-based knowledge to help patients. Liz was always profoundly grateful that she was supported in her first attempt in research. Appropriately, the yearly award is entitled, “Someone Believes in Me.”
Liz will long be remembered for improving the patient experience, her passionate pursuit of evidence-based practice, and challenging the status quo.
Hiba Sheikh happily credits Dr. Imran Ratanshi for giving her back her freedom after an ordeal that began with an ill-fated trip to Mexico—and one and a half years of immobility.
Just a few years ago, she came to Surrey from Dubai at the age of 19, and today Hiba works at a childcare centre and lives with her sister and parents. But she had no idea what was in store for her when she decided on a Mexican vacation with a friend. On the second day of the trip, the two were relaxing on a restaurant balcony when they heard shots fired below. Scared and confused, people began jumping to the ground and a panicked Hiba followed suit, but she found herself jumping into a pool of blood. She’d been shot in the ankle.
After the terrifying experience, Hiba spent five days in a Mexican hospital where things went from bad to worse. She woke up during surgery due to inadequate anesthetic, then later learned they’d inserted a product no longer used elsewhere.
After flying home in unbearable pain, Hiba was seen immediately at Surrey Memorial Hospital for surgery. Six more surgeries followed over the next one and a half years to reconstruct the bony defect in her ankle using a free tissue transfer from her knee. The last ankle-saving surgery was with Dr. Imran Ratanshi in December 2020. Within four months, Hiba was finally back on her feet and back to herself. In fact, she’s doing so well, she even caught herself running for a bus!
Today, Hiba says you don’t know how strong you are until you’re put into a situation where you have no choice but to be strong. She credits her faith and Dr. Ratanshi’s expertise for her recovery. Hiba can’t speak highly enough of his work and the freedom it has given her.
Surrey’s business community is comprised of some of our biggest supporters; many return year after year to support the ongoing needs of our health care facilities. Some of the capital equipment and projects supported this year include the Surgical Vitrectomy System, the Microsurgical Lymphatic Reconstruction Program, the Hana Table, and the injectable loop recorder cardiac monitor –the first of its kind in Western Canada.
Highlight - A game-changing Microsurgical Lymphatic Reconstruction program comes to Surrey: Thanks to the generous support of our donor community, we are pleased to have invested $1.3 million to help fund two lifechanging surgeries led by microsurgeons Dr. Imran Ratanshi and Dr. Jennifer Prince.
These surgeries (Lymphatic to Vein Bypass and a BC-first Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer) are crucial for those at high risk of developing lymphedema, a condition that develops when there is a blockage in lymphatic channels leading to fluid retention and swelling.
Both of these surgeries employ breakthrough microsurgical techniques to 1) re-route the lymphatic system, bypassing damaged nodes and connecting lymphatic channels to drain directly into the venous system; and 2) transplant lymph nodes from a healthy part of the body to the affected area, promoting drainage and formation of new lymphatic channels.
Some of the research and education initiatives we invested in this year include the Strategic Priority Grant, Neuro Research Award, Dr. Tom Godwin’s Lectureship, and the BMO Education Grant for pediatric nursing professional development.
Highlight – BMO Education Grant: Surrey Hospitals Foundation is proud to have partnered with BMO Financial Group, who has generously provided a gift of $250,000 to help further the professional development of pediatric nurses. This is the largest grant invested for pediatric nursing professional development in Fraser Health’s history, and will benefit the health care of children in the region. BMO’s pediatric nursing education grant will help up to 25 pediatric nurses each year acquire new skills and training.
Portable Vein Finder: The patients in the medicine units often have veins that are challenging to locate or are particularly frail due to individuals having complex medical histories. The portable vein finder can improve first poke success rate by up to 98%, thus improving patient outcomes and supporting nurses in developing their IV insertion technique over time.
Speech Language Pathology: Provale cups and SPEAK OUT! books. The Provale cups help patients who have been diagnosed with dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) to liquids. SPEAK OUT! Is an evidence-based voice therapy program designed to help patients with Parkinson’s disease improve their speech and communication.
Neurology Clinic: Hip Saver Soft Sweats, 2-in-1 walker/transport chairs, four-wheeled walkers and Activator Walking Poles. These mobility items for Movement Disorder patients at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre allow for safe walking and movement within their own homes and communities. Without these items, patients would continue to live at risk of falls and fall-related injuries resulting in increased ER visits and hospitalizations. The mobility items not only prevent injury, but also provide increased independence and freedom to remain at home longer.
Surrey Hospitals Foundation is committed to the highest standards of accountability and transparency. Our Board of Directors is a group of business leaders and health care professionals who guide us in our ambitious goals to lead the transformation of health care in the region. Together, we focus on achieving results that are defined by impact on our community and effective stewardship of our donors’ contributions.
