Report 2023 - 2024
It’s all thanks to you.
Dear Supporters and Friends of Surrey Hospitals Foundation,
This past fiscal year has seen significant change and growth for Surrey Hospitals Foundation. We are honoured to share the remarkable progress and achievements you have made possible over the past year.
Together, over the last fiscal year, we have witnessed extraordinary investments at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, Czorny Alzheimer Centre, and other critical programs highlighted in our annual report.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the hardworking healthcare professionals and facility teams who are at the heart of our healthcare system. Through all of us working with community members, Fraser Health and the BC government, we have achieved significant milestones including progress towards establishing much-needed cardiac catheterization labs in Surrey. These labs will be the first for residents south of the Fraser to provide important tests and treatments like heart rhythm correction, blood vessel imaging, artery clearing, and pacemaker placement for all residents in our region.
At the Foundation, we remain dedicated to supporting the elevation and delivery of care for residents from birth through end-of-life, made possible by your unwavering philanthropic spirit. This past year, we saw one chapter close as we said goodbye to our longstanding leader, President & CEO Jane Adams. After conducting a formal search, the Board of Directors welcomed Nicole Robson as the Foundation’s new President & CEO. We acknowledge the dynamic changes in healthcare as our community continues to grow and are excited for this next chapter of growth and innovation at the Foundation to support our region’s growing needs. Your ongoing dedication
to our shared mission remains crucial as we advance towards establishing a fully equipped regional hospital that serves the communities south of the Fraser.
Moving forward we are approaching the future with great optimism. Exciting developments lie ahead as we introduce our Pillars of Care, offering donors the chance to champion specific areas of healthcare that are close to their hearts. Collaborating closely with our valued stakeholders, we are dedicated to ensuring all our facilities and regional hospital delivers exceptional and equitable healthcare across our growing community. These Pillars of Care will transform healthcare delivery by providing innovative programs, ground-breaking research tailored to meet the diverse and growing needs of our population, and investing in cutting-edge equipment and facilities.
Thank you for your continued passion and commitment to our shared cause. Together, we will continue to turn our collective vision into reality—delivering excellence in healthcare that meets the needs of our communities south of the Fraser River.

Maternal & Pediatric Health
Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) is the regional centre for children’s healthcare, with 43% of BC’s children living in our region. SHF provides ongoing funding of equipment for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as upgrades to our Family Birthing Unit and Children’s Health Centre.
Mental Health
In Canada, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death amongst young people. In Surrey, 1 in 3 residents are under the age of 19, resulting in a need for mental health support. SHF continues to support programs including music, art, and recreation therapy. SHF also supports ongoing needs at SMH as it serves as the regional centre for acute children and youth mental health services.
Surgery & Cancer Care
SMH is home to world-class cancer care. SHF is proud to have funded the Interventional Radiology Suite, cutting-edge technologies that allow for more complex and safer procedures, much faster procedure times, and minimally-invasive techniques. SMH also houses a world-class thoracic surgery team, performing 1,170 procedures a year. With the support of SHF and donors, new technologies are now available for diagnosis and treatment, enabling less post-operative pain, reduced risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery time.
Research & Innovation
SHF is proud to support research, innovation and education. This year, we have funded a research assistant for our Post-COVID Recovery Clinic at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. This research assistant works with the Provincial Post COVID-19 Interdisciplinary Clinical Care Network. We also support research in neurology, such as the SMH Brain Health and Frailty Research Unit, where studies are taking place in early detection and management of frailty in older adults.
As the regional hospital for those living south of the Fraser, situated in one of BC’s fastest growing communities, SMH provides comprehensive healthcare for its patients from birth to end-of-life.
Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC) relieves pressures on our healthcare system by consolidating services that don’t require an overnight stay into one stand-alone facility. The Centre provides a complete range of scheduled outpatient services, including day surgery, diagnostic services and specialized health clinics.
Czorny Alzheimer Centre offers a safe home for 72 dementia patients and is specially designed to provide both psychological security and comfort. Located in a quiet rural setting, this long-term care home, consisting of six 12-room cottage living spaces, is tranquil by design. The architecture reflects an innovative, holistic, person-centered approach to dementia care.
When I woke up on the morning of May 25, I didn’t expect to have a heart attack. My day started off normally, but by 5pm, I was in an ambulance heading towards Surrey Memorial Hospital.
You know the other thing I didn’t expect? That I would need to be taken over a bridge and transferred to another hospital so that they could insert a stent into my blocked coronary artery.
Once I made the decision to call 9-1-1, it felt like everything happened so fast. But then I had to wait in Surrey Memorial’s Emergency Room for three hours before an ambulance took me to another hospital for the cardiac procedure that saved my life. Three hours of waiting and travel time for a procedure that only took about 20 minutes!
I am eternally grateful for the care I received at Surrey Memorial. The healthcare staff do amazing work, and your generous gifts empower them and make it all possible! It is great news to hear that because of the support of the Foundation community, and collaboration with government and Fraser Health, two new catheterization labs will be opened and equipped at the hospital in the next several months.
I do think about what would have happened if there was a traffic jam or an extreme weather situation on the bridge when I was being transferred. Would I have received the treatment I needed in time? Or would I have even survived?
Although there is still lots of work to be done to provide the best healthcare for our community, we are taking big steps to get there. I am grateful that we can work together and give from our hearts to ensure that the healthcare our loved ones receive is the best it can possibly be.
I can tell you that the ER team was nothing short of amazing. I was examined right away, and after a few short tests, the doctor told me I was having a heart attack! I was surprised, because my symptoms were so mild. I’d held off calling 9-1-1 for quite some time, but finally trusted my gut that something wasn’t right.
As our cardiologists often say, “time is muscle”. When you are having a heart attack, time is of the absolute essence. So, it was surprising to hear that I needed a hospital transfer to get the procedure I needed.
It is sad to see a reality where it takes longer to drive over a bridge to access life-saving care than it does to do the actual cardiac procedure.
I am eternally grateful for the care I received at Surrey Memorial. – Anne-Marie, Grateful Patient “ “
Surrey Hospitals Foundation has recently received a donation from Ken and Ena McIntosh, long-time supporters of the Foundation, to help fund the purchase of four near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring devices for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
The NIRS technology is new in the NICU and Surrey Memorial Hospital is among the first hospitals in British Columbia to use the NIRS monitoring devices to help pediatric clinicians conduct non-invasive and continuous real-time monitoring of tissue oxygenation saturation in cerebral tissue and other organs in high-risk babies.
“Our NICU department currently has a bed capacity of 32 and on average one out of eight neonates is in critical condition and at risk of developing a
central nervous system injury,” explains Dr. Samer Yousfi, a pediatrician and neonatologist at Surrey Memorial Hospital. “The innovative near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring devices will enable our pediatric clinicians to better monitor highrisk babies and will tremendously contribute to improved quality of care at our NICU.”
The NIRS technology will provide a more complete and accurate picture and allows for real-time, continuous and non-invasive readings of blood oxygen levels and oxygen consumption in the brain, tissues and other specific organs. It can alert clinicians to changes in the condition of high-risk babies, enabling them to make interventions earlier, if necessary.

Amount Raised: $6,000,000 to date as of March 31, 2024
With the announcement in June 2023 by the provincial government of two brand new cardiac catheterization labs (cath labs) to be built at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Surrey Hospitals Foundation quickly launched a fundraising campaign to help equip these new cath labs—the first-ever south of the Fraser River.
Growth in Fraser Health’s aging population will be the fastest and the largest of all health authorities in the province. Heart disease is already the number one cause of death among people 65 and older and is poised to become even more prevalent in the years ahead, exacting an enormous toll on the health and quality of life for residents south of the Fraser.
But with these new cath labs, Surrey Memorial Hospital’s interventional cardiologists will be able to diagnose and treat problems in heart and blood vessels before they cause larger issues, such as a heart attack or stroke. And in the case of a completely blocked coronary artery, urgent intervention in a cardiac cath lab could mean the difference between life and death.
Thanks to our supporters, we raised $6,000,000 towards our shared goal of equipping these cath labs. However, our work is far from over. We are actively seeking funding and support until the goal of $10,000,000 is reached.
The funding of the cardiac cath labs would not be possible without the support of our generous community. The Gurpurab Radiothon, hosted by Surrey’s 93.1 RED FM, is the most successful one-day radiothon where listeners support a hospital in Canada. This year, the community of listeners raised a remarkable $1,000,013.13 to support the Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab Campaign.
The new cardiac catheterization labs will play a crucial role in helping interventional cardiologists diagnose and treat heart and blood vessels before they escalate into life-threatening issues, such as a heart attack or stroke. The urgency of intervention in treating a completely blocked coronary artery in a cardiac cath lab could mean the difference between life and death.
“South Asians reside in a large number in Surrey, and they are predisposed to heart conditions. That’s why we need Cardiac Cath Labs right here at Surrey Memorial Hospital. I am glad that the RED FM listeners and community are doing their part to help bring Cardiac Cath Labs to SMH,” says Kulwinder Sanghera, RED FM’s President & CEO.
This event marks the 14th time radio listeners have supported Surrey Hospitals Foundation through the Gurpurab Radiothon. To date, the community has raised over $9.5 million in support of the Foundation and our various projects at SMH and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre.
“What took you so long?” This is the question Dr. Tom Godwin, a pioneer cardiologist, would have likely asked after hearing about Surrey Memorial Hospital’s new cardiac catheterization lab, says his wife Elaine Godwin. Dr. Godwin founded the cardiac program at the Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) in 1968. He worked tirelessly to establish the facility’s first cardiac catheterization lab and open-heart surgery programs, elevating RCH to one of Canada’s top cardiac care centres.
Dr. Godwin served at RCH as Chief of Cardiology from 1968-87 and then as Chief of Medical Staff from 1988-89. He retired in 1996 due to health issues. Two years later, Dr. Godwin received the CJ Coady Memorial Medal for outstanding contributions to cardiology services in the Fraser Health region.
Elaine and the Godwin family are honouring Tom’s legacy with a remarkable and transformational gift of close to $3 million toward the new Cardiac Catheterization Labs at SMH.
Dr. Godwin spent his final days at SMH in the Neurology Unit, where he passed away on April 9, 2013.
Elaine says Tom would have been thrilled to be fundraising for the Cardiac Cath Labs. He was dedicated to making a difference and determined to contribute to the hospital, his patients, and advances in medicine. “He would have been very supportive of us contributing to these new Cath Labs here in Surrey. It is essential,” says Elaine, who was married to her husband for 52 years.
Dr. Godwin had many interests outside medicine. A resident of Surrey, he and Elaine raised four boys on their family farm, 26 acres which are now a Biodiversity Reserve. He was also a pilot, a conservationist, and an author. In his book “A Doctor’s Notes”, published in 2009, he wrote a memoir about his experiences as a physician and as a patient.
The Godwin family’s dedication and belief in the power of community mirror the same dedication and heart that Dr. Godwin
poured into his career as a physician. Their generosity and visionary leadership stand as a testament to the profound impact one family can make.
“Tom believed in giving back,” says Elaine. “It’s so important. This is what has developed through my relationship with the Foundation. It’s all about giving.”
This remarkable gift isn’t the first time that the Godwin family has formally honoured the cardiologist. In 2013, they established the Annual Dr. Tom Godwin Neurology Lectureship to honour and express appreciation for the excellent care he received while in the Surrey Memorial Hospital Neurology Unit. This annual lectureship aims to enhance teaching and collaboration among international medical professionals and neurology experts.
Thank you to Elaine and the Godwin family on behalf of the Surrey Hospital Foundation and the entire community south of the Fraser River.
Thank you to the RBC Foundation for committing $400,000 over four years to help establish a special healthcare team to support children, youth and young adults with mental health challenges.
Research has shown that providing a mental health transition team for this vulnerable population during their hospital-to-community transition has a significant positive impact, including reducing hospital visits, decreasing Emergency Department stays, lowering psychiatric readmissions, reducing self-harm, and improving school reintegration.
SMH treats more children and youth for mental health issues than any other hospital in BC. The transition team will provide an overlap between hospital and community treatment services. Building trusting relationships with community care providers takes time, and the period between hospital discharge and connection to community services is an unsettling period for people with mental illness.
In Canada in 2016, the 30-day readmission rate for mental illness was 12 percent, with over half occurring within 14 days of hospital discharge. The first few weeks of reintegration is also a highrisk period for suicide.
“This special transition team will go a long way in helping support children, youth and families with mental health in the vulnerable time after being discharged from the hospital, which can often be overwhelming and difficult,” says Mike Kenyon, Director of Clinical Operations, Mental Health and Substance Use at Fraser Health.
The transition team will provide up to four weeks of support for vulnerable young people and their families as they are discharged from the hospital and into community treatment services. Supports include timely post-discharge assessment of psychiatric needs, medication management, consultations with a psychiatrist, home visits and interdisciplinary enhanced support.
“Sanjha Vehra,” meaning “common courtyard” in Punjabi, is an international women’s association founded in 2002. It began with a group of women who started a monthly Indian style “kitty party.” Kitty parties are social gatherings where each guest makes a donation. The goal of Sanjha Vehra is to raise funds to give back to the community.
In 2005, Sanjha Vehra began its annual event to support and raise funds for breast cancer research. This was a cause important to the association because five of the founding members had been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Every year since then, the association continues fundraising as a tribute to these survivors.
In 2013, Sanjha Vehra partnered with Surrey Hospitals Foundation to support the Breast Health Clinic at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. Since then, they have collectively donated over $141,000 towards the clinic, helping thousands of women in their battle against breast cancer!
Thanks to a $1M gift from the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Len & Joan Leece, the gastroenterology division at Surrey Memorial Hospital will be expanding with a new endoscopic ultrasound device as well as a new advanced gastroenterology fellowship position.
“With the exponential population growth of Surrey and surrounding regions, the need for endoscopic ultrasound has never been greater and is long overdue at Surrey Memorial Hospital,” explains Dr. Henry Wong, gastroenterologist and head of gastrointestinal division at SMH.
“We are routinely sending patients to Vancouver every week, which delays the treatment and care of our patients. But we shouldn’t have to, given that our hospital has the most gastrointestinal specialists in the Fraser Health region. We are grateful for Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s support in investing in this endoscopic ultrasound technology so that we can also recruit more specialists and expand our care to patients in the region.”
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) provides more detailed imaging of organs and is more precise at detecting tumours and
cysts than traditional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT). EUS is useful in diagnosing and staging gastrointestinal tract conditions and cancers including in nearby areas such as lungs, pancreas, liver, bile ducts and gallbladder. It also has a therapeutic role in draining complex pancreatic fluid collections especially in sick ICU patients, draining fluids from cysts, or delivering medicines and therapies to a targeted region, such as a malignant tumor.
Surrey Hospitals Foundation is profoundly grateful to the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Len & Joan Leece for their transformative gift. Creative and hardworking, Leonard and Joan Leece emigrated from England in 1964 and grew to love Vancouver and White Rock. They saved and invested well, and over the years they shared their good fortune by generously supporting many charitable causes. Having received excellent care at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Len and Joan were proud and grateful to have such an outstanding regional hospital in their community, and recognized Surrey Hospitals Foundation with one of its largest estate gifts to date.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we continue in our quest to bring life-changing health care to our community.
Every dollar donated has created impact. This past year we have funded over $2M in capital equipment, $500K in enhanced patient comfort items, $230K in research and education.
Some of the capital equipment funded this year include: Integrated Operating Room System technology, mobile ultrasounds, advanced surgical tables, laser blue light laryngology, hydraulic chairs, optiflow pediatric nasal therapy, radiographic unit, ablation systems for cardiac care, patient ceiling lifts, and the opening of Czorny Alzheimer Centre’s bakery.
The new bakery at Czorny Alzheimer Centre provides therapeutic activation and social stimulation for its 72 residents. They can participate in a baking program where recreation therapy staff and volunteers help them make assorted baked goods. The goal is to bring back happy memories through the nostalgic scents and sights of baking. This creates a sense of purpose for Czorny’s residents.
Kerry Dalla- Vecchia, Recreation Co-ordinator at Czorny, shares, “The bakery is the first of its kind in residential care, and it is what makes Czorny even more special.”

BMO Education Grant: $32,000 funded in fiscal year 2023/24
BMO is the largest funder of pediatric professional development. The Foundation is steadfast in the belief that meaningful learning opportunities for healthcare professionals will lead to better health outcomes for pediatric patients and their families. Continuous professional development also ensures that patients and their families can stay close to home versus travelling to healthcare facilities outside of the region. Since the start of the BMO Educational Nursing Grant Program in 2022, over 40 pediatric nurses at SMH have been awarded the grant.
The grants are intended to enable staff to develop and enhance specialized skills to improve healthcare for pediatric patients (from birth to 16 years old). As SMH sees more than 50,000 children annually for medical care, this has a significant impact on patient care.
The granting committee seeks applications three times a year. Courses that were attended include: 20th Annual Pediatric Emergency Medicine Update; Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Play Therapy, Theory and Approaches; Music Therapy; and Breastfeeding practices and techniques.
The proceeds from our staff 50/50 staff lottery are used to fund projects and support items that will help to enhance patient stay and healing environment. Funding requests up to $5,000 are considered by committee and priority is given to projects with a wider impact and departments that don’t have established funds.
Some of the projects funded in the year include: blanket warmers, geriatric lifts, patient chairs and walkers that are used at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre.
One of the projects funded was to enhance the sensory room in the Adolescent Day Treatment Program (ADTP) which provides a full range of individualized mental health services for adolescents with acute psychiatric illnesses. The grant allowed the team to acquire new furnishings and supplies needed to convert an office into a sensory room. The staff and youth know this room as the “Chill Room.”
One of our youth patients mentioned “I enjoy the peaceful escape that room provides, thank you for it.”
Surrey Hospitals Foundation is committed to the highest standards of accountability and transparency to its donors, partners and community stakeholders.
In order to effectively execute its governance responsibilities over the Foundation’s financials, the Foundation’s Board of Directors has a Finance Committee comprised of two members of the Board of Directors including the Treasurer and Vice Chair. The Finance Committee also has community members who are business leaders with the necessary financial background and expertise to fulfill the governance mandate of the Finance Committee.
Financial highlights are based on the audited financial statements of the Foundation for the year ended March 31, 2024.
The Foundation’s financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2024 were prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations and were audited by KPMG LLP. Audited financial statements of the Foundation can be found at SurreyHospitalsFoundation.com/about
The Foundation has disbursed over $25M in the last five years to Fraser Health Authority for projects, equipment, patient care enhancements, research and staff education at Surrey Memorial Hospital, Jim Pattison Outpatient Centre, Czorny Alzheimer Centre, and CareLife Fleetwood.
$265,200 raised to support youth mental health
On July 22, 2023, 38 teams of paddleboarders and many other local business and community groups gathered together at Crescent Beach for Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s 4th annual charity event, Champion of the Crescent.
Altogether, Champion of the Crescent 2023 raised a record $265,200 to support much-needed youth mental health programs at Surrey Memorial Hospital, specifically music, art, and recreational therapy. Funds also went towards a new Child and Youth Mental Health Transition Team, the first of its kind in BC, which bridges the gap between hospital and community services. This transition team will enable healthcare workers to better care for children and youth with complex needs, as well as their families.
We thank our sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and participants for making Champion of the Crescent 2023 a success!
$1.7M raised for cardiac care
On February 24, 2024, our Celebration of Care Gala – Midnight at the Ballet, welcomed over 600 of Surrey’s business, community, medical, and philanthropic luminaries at the Aria Convention Centre. With the community’s support, we raised over $1.7 million for cardiac care at SMH.
Funds will directly support specialized medical equipment for the first-ever catheterization labs south of the Fraser River, being built at SMH; as well as ongoing and future cardiac care needs.
We extend our gratitude to our Gala Committee, Board of Directors, event emcees, Dr. Bond and Sonia Sunger; our incredible auctioneer, Fred Lee; our live auction donors; our volunteers; our long list of amazing sponsors; and of course, all of our guests!
