San Clemente is a charming coastal city in Southern California known for its vibrant surf culture and beautiful beaches. With a relaxed, beachy atmosphere with cafes, restaurants, and shops that reflect its surf culture. The town also boasts a vibrant art scene, with many local artists capturing the beauty of the ocean and surf culture through various mediums.

Our favorite surf spots:

1. Trestles: one of the most famous surf spots in California, Trestles is known for its consistent waves and is a favorite among professional surfers. It features several breaks, including Lowers, Middles, and Uppers, catering to various skill levels.

2. San Clemente Pier: this spot offers fun waves and is great for both beginners and experienced surfers. The pier itself is a popular landmark and provides a picturesque backdrop for surf sessions.

3. Cotton’s Point: a more challenging spot, Cotton’s Point is known for its powerful waves and is best suited for experienced surfers.

JOHN JOHN FLORENCE CLAIMS THIRD WORLD TITLE WINS

The WSL world title ended with the most dominant surfer of the year John John Florence. The waves showed up and provided a really good day of competition.

Lower Trestles can be a difficult venue for some surfers. It was undoubtedly fitting for John John Florence to regain the throne. Showing his greatness and exceptional skill in every condition possible.

It was impressive to watch Italo eliminate the other finalist along his way to making the final with John, but John slammed the door shut with true power surfing with one particular gaff that took all the wind out of Italo’s title run campaign that day.

The energy on the beach was incredible, John John having an army of fans peppering the beach with their gold and yellow Florence Marine hats. Cheering and elevating the world champion along on his path.

Meet Your Trainer

Mario Rossi

What kind of strength and conditioning work do you do for surfing? Breathwork, Mobility, Strength, Power. Also important to note that every surfer is different & may benefit from various combinations of training. We cannot “mail box” a surfer, rather treat each individual unique.

What does your weekly gym routine as a surfer looks like?

This summer I’ve stuck to training in the gym Monday, Wednesday, Friday (I’ll mention in the next question why I choose these days to train).

What are some of your favorite supplements and why?

The best supplements would be Santa Cruz Paleo’s.

How often do you train and what proportion of your work is devoted to heavy lifting? I train 3-4 times a week depending on the amount of surf there is. I think it’s safe to say that training 3 days a week, with rest days in between has been the best for me. Doing functional exercises with intent every other day will keep you connected to your body & connected to making progress towards your overall goal.

How important is diet to building strength? A diet with an adequate amount of protein is essential for building muscle/ size strength. However, for a surfer, a balanced diet is the best approach. Packing on too much muscle can give you a sense of “weighing you down”.

What specific workouts get you ready for competition? It’s all about getting to peak level performance of an individual a week or two before competition. Giving the athlete 4-5 days off with necessary maintenance & mobility exercises & staying connected to your progress through movement & breath work.

What motivates you to keep training hard and stay on track? Staying connected to WHAT you want to achieve. If you know WHAT you want, then you don’t have to worry about who, where, & when it will just appear but you have to know WHAT you’re looking for.

What do you know now that you wish you´d known when you first started? I wish I knew more about how diet & lifestyle contribute directly to how you perform mentally & physically.

Where do you train?

@DSCPerformance

Best advice you could give to surfers just getting into working out? Don’t mistake working out or training for just lifting weights. There’s many various ways out of the water for us surfers to better ourselves mentally & physically to improve our surfing.

JETT SCHILLING

Agua y Aceite

She was born in San Clemente, California and she’s been making art for as long as she can remember. From miniature surfboards to canvas paper, sculptures and paintings.

When she was just 6 years old she started painting surfboards, she would go down to the Lost Surfboards factory and just hang around and watch the main painter, and him and her dad helped her to get into painting surfboards.

Her dad is her inspiration, he created an amazing company called Lost Surfboards and she loves working there.

Everyday she’s getting better and better and her goals for 2024 are to further her college education at LCAD in Laguna Beach and learn how to do graphic design, so that she can make amazing digital art as well!
