Surf Art Magazine: 12 years of celebrating the beauty of Surfing in Guatemala

Surf Art Magazine is celebrating its 12th year anniversary this year, and we’re taking the opportunity to reflect on the magazine’s journey and the impact it has had on the surfing community in Guatemala.

When Surf Art Magazine was first launched in 2011, Guatemala was still a relatively unknown surfing destination. But over the years, the magazine has helped to put Guatemala on the map as a world-class surfing destination. We’ve featured stories about the best surf spots in Guatemala, interviews with top Guatemalan surfers, and photography that captures the beauty of surfing in this amazing country.

Matthew McGillivray

How did you start surfing?

I have two older brothers and they got second hand surfboards and started learning how to surf. I was 10 years old at the time and wanted to do whatever they did so I started joining them in the water and fell in love with it.

Do you have any memories of your beginnings that you feel marked your path?

I remember the first time trying to get barreled on a wave and how exciting that was even though I had no idea what I was doing yet. I also had a really cool experience of riding the same wave as dolphins and them bumping underneath my board, I felt like I was surfing on top of them.

How did you feel when you entered the tour and what difference do you feel now?

I was super fired up and motivated when I qualified for the tour in 2019. Then covid happened and there was a lot of uncertainty and feeling overwhelmed. After the last two years of surfing on the tour I feel more confident in my surfing and decisions. The time and experience gives one a lot of practice with dealing with the pressure and I found I need to have fun and can’t take everything too seriously for me to surf my best.

What would you say you like the most about surfing as a full-time job and what do you like the least?

I like where surfing takes me, traveling to different countries and meeting lots of people. I don’t like when the ocean is crowded and it is hard to practice because it is too busy in the water or the waves are small.

What do you think about the tour having a stop in El Salvador, do you like it?

I have enjoyed coming to El Salvador the last two years because it has good waves and uncrowded, warm water. I hope we keep coming back!

What goals do you have now?

How would you like to end the year?

I am aiming to finish in the top 10 on the WSL tour so I can qualify for the 2024 Olympics. I also want to do more wingsuit base jumping in the off season!

¿Cómo empezaste a surfear?

Para mí fue muy natural porque toda mi familia surfea. Desde pequeñita mi padre me llevaba con él cuando tenia año y medio. Siguieron los años y a mis 4 o 5 años obtuve mi primera tabla. Ya a los 8 años empecé a competir y sigo compitiendo hasta ahora.

¿Cómo te sientes al saber que eres la inspiración de todas las surfistas y sobre todo de las latinas que quieren seguir tus pasos?

Yo las admiro a todas también. Es satisfactorio ver a las latinas mejorar día tras día y ganar terreno. Este esfuerzo nos une a todas más por que sabemos que no es nada fácil.

¿Cómo te sientes al participar en los primeros

Juegos Olímpicos de surf en Tokio, Japón 2020?

La competencia en Tokio fue increíble. Yo me sentí física y mentalmente muy bien. Di todo mi 100%. Hubo mucha presión y quería ser la mejor y darle el honor a nuestra surfista Katy querida. Fue maravilloso haber competido en Tokio. Era mi primera vez y me di cuenta de la importancia que tienen los Juegos Olímpicos. ¡Fue increíble vivirlos! Sentí que fue un gran honor haber sido la representante de mi país.

Después de perder por un empate, pasé por momentos difíciles pero ahora la experiencia de esta competencia me han dado más fuerzas para seguir adelante.

Sabemos que deseas competir en las Olimpiadas de Paris 2024 ¿Qué tienes que hacer para conseguirlo?

Seguir practicando mucho y dar mi 100%. Al final si sigo así me sentiré satisfecha independientemente del resultado final.

¿Cómo te sentiste al recibir la noticia de ser la “Wild Card” femenina de la última edición de Surf City El Salvador Pro 2023?

Con mucha emoción. La verdad no me la esperaba. Fue el mejor correo que he recibido en mi vida, ja ja ja.

¿Qué te llevas de esta experiencia y a dónde sientes que te dirige?

Salí muy feliz, creo que logre dar un buen performance que era mi meta. Siento que mi dirección sigue igual en los Challengers para llegar al CT, y también con la meta de clasificación para Paris 2024.

Siempre estuve obsesionado con el deporte, RAW MVMNT nace después de muchos años de estudio teórico y practica en distintos tipos de metodologías de la movilidad en los que obtuve y pude rescatar lo mejor de cada una y juntarlo con mi propio conocimiento adquirido, en la búsqueda de enlazar todo con pasión por el surf me di cuenta que se complementan perfectamente. Al ser consiente de la necesidad e importancia de una preparación física específica y viendo resultados en mi mismo, decidí poner mi granito de arena por la evolución del deporte e ir formando lo que hoy en día es RAW; lo que busco es compartir con los demás lo que he aprendido en este largo camino, concientizar acerca de la importancia de una preparación física adecuada y ayudar a que formen su mejor versión como atletas.”

RAW MVMNT es un proyecto con una metodología de entrenamiento que busca introducir deportistas, especialmente surfers, a una movilidad consciente mediante ejercicios, con los cuales puedan desbloquear rangos de movimiento esenciales y reducir los riesgos de lesión, en la búsqueda de aumentar el performance.

El surf es un deporte complejo que requiere de ciertas capacidades adquiridas como por ejemplo fuerza, movilidad, estabilidad, transiciones asimétricas de pesos, diversos movimientos articulares y multiarticulares, todo en cuestión de segundos, en los cuales no solo se va a necesitar flexibilidad , sino algo que para RAW es mucho más importante y que pocas veces le damos la debida atención, es trabajar en el reconocimiento de la activación muscular y articular necesaria para realizar dichos movimientos para así poder optimizar nuestra capacidad de ejercer fuerza en la ejecución de estos mismos, y de esta manera estabilizar y tener un control motor funcional del ejercicio, lo que en RAW definimos como un RANGO DE MOVIMIENTO DESBLOQUEADO.

Resumiendo, desarollar estas capacidades al 100% es más fácil, efectivo y seguro, mediante un entrenamiento consciente en un medio estable al que estamos acostumbrados como es la tierra y no únicamente en el mar, donde todos los factores sólo multiplican la dificultad. Así el tiempo de adquisición será muchísimo menor y el riesgo de lesión disminuye significativamente.

As he grew older, his passion for content creation developed deeper. He realized what better thing to shoot what he knows best. Johnny Decesare, CEO of Poor Boyz Productions and WSL cinematographer, took him under his wing as an intern and showed him the ropes of surf videography. Currently, he is a part of the in-house media team at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch. Aside from the ranch and surfing, he does many other freelance gigs such as sporting events, music festivals, and commercial shoots. Which are also taking him around the world.

Within the past 2-3 years, the ball really got rolling for Blaise in the surfing industry. In 2022, he was hired to go to Tahiti for the Teahupo’o contest and shoot Kelly Slater and

Blaise Booth, also known as ‘Blaisey Shootz’ is a 27 year old videographer and photographer from Los Angeles, CA. His passion for the water came at a young age, spending countless hours bodyboarding and just being at the beach with friends. By high school, he was the kid that was known to be the “photographer”. Always had a camera in hand, capturing every magical moment.

Raimana van Bastolaer. It was a dream trip for any kid that grew up around the surfing. And last month, he was in the Mentawai’s with Olympic gold medalist Italo Ferreira. He still pinches himself on the fact that a simple passion of filmmaking and photography turned into his profession. Though it is a thrill to travel to these magical places, he believes the experiences that come with these trips are the true value.

“Throughout the past couple years, I believe that traveling has made me a better person. Yes, seeing these places that look photoshopped or out of a movie are insane in their own right. But I think where the most value comes

from is one, learning about and experiencing other cultures. You get to see how other people live, and take those with you into my own life. Also, I am constantly humbled by many places where people don’t have a lot, but live a happy lifestyle.

And secondly, the bonds you make on a trip, whether it being with a friend of yours, or one that you made along the journey. You never know who you meet in life. I truly live by the statement “It’s not what you know, but who you know in life”, I believe that’s what got me to where I am.”

What does Blaise see in his future? For now, he loves the position that he’s in and hopes to keep meeting the right people to further his career. That being said, he is nowhere close to his end goal. That would be owning his own production company and being able to bring in young content creators under his wing, as Johnny did for him. He is forever in Johnny’s debt because if it wasn’t for him, god knows what he would be doing now. Probably a 9-5 office job. Be sure to keep an eye out for Blaise’s work and possibly seeing him out shooting on the beach.

Nací en El Salvador el 18 de marzo de 1986. Soy licenciado en Artes plásticas por la Universidad de El Salvador.
