NORTH SHORE CHRONICLES: THE HEARTBEAT OF SURFING’S SOUL”
Nestled along the rugged coastline of Oahu, the North Shore stands as a sacred mecca for surfers worldwide. With its towering waves, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage, this stretch of coastline embodies the essence of surfing’s soul.
As the sun rises over the Pacific, the North Shore awakens with a symphony of crashing waves and the distant hum of board wax being applied.
From iconic breaks like Pipeline and Sunset Beach to hidden gems like Rocky Point and Chun’s Reef, every wave carries with it a story waiting to be told.
But the North Shore is more than just a playground for adrenaline junkies; it’s a community deeply rooted in tradition and respect for the ocean. Here, surfers of all ages and backgrounds come together to share waves, swap stories, and pay homage to the ancient Hawaiian gods who govern these waters.
As we paddle out into the lineup, let’s not forget the lessons taught by those who came before us. Let’s honor the land, the sea, and each other with humility and gratitude. And let’s always honor that the true magic of the North Shore lies not in the waves themselves, but in the connections forged between those who call this sacred place home.
So, whether you’re a seasoned local or a wide-eyed visitor, take a moment to pause and appreciate the majesty of the North Shore. For in these hallowed waters, the spirit of surfing lives on, eternal and unyielding.

I found my love for the ocean at a very young age and spent countless hours in the water as a child. Being surrounded by something greater and more powerful has always been captivating to me.
Photography has given me the privilege to build relationships with people that are countries apart, experience cultures of all diversities, and travel to places I would have never imagined. It has deepened my love for creation and opened my eyes to a world that surpasses all earthly understanding. I hope to show people this beautiful world we live in from a unique perspective and inspire them to preserve and protect it.

From the North Shore of Oahu. He is an ocean based photographer. Whether it’s under, in, or around the water, he loves to capture it in a way that no one else has done before.
Cobian started taking photos when he was 13 years old, just using a GoPro while surfing and diving with friends, but didn’t commit to doing it full time until after high school, where he realized college wasn’t for him.
He’s now been able to shoot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, from some of the most remote islands in Indonesia, to his backyard in Hawaii.

WE INTERVIEWED TWO SURFERS WHO HAVE SAVED A LIFE AT PIPE LINE:
SURFERS ARE SUPERHEROS LUCAS GODFREY
The situation at pipeline was very serious. I was first on the scene to an unconscious surfer stuck underwater. Once I recognized the situation I immediately activated paddling out and surfacing the unconscious surfer then placing him on the board and began heading to the beach.
I was aware the surfer was in the impact zone but I was distracted by a conversation with someone else at the beach until my friend Mikey brought it to my attention.
Many obstacles in the rescue, after running down the beach and paddling out to Ehukai I was out of breath, so, trying to get the unconscious surfer on the board was very difficult by myself. We also got hit by two big waves at the beach break but I managed to hold on to the surfer. There was no communication between the victim and me as he was unconscious the entire time.
I was initially distressed because it was very unclear if the victim was gonna be able to make a full recovery or even be brought back to life as he had been without oxygen for a very long time. I eventually was relieved to learn that he made a full recovery.

SURFERS ARE SUPERHEROS
There’s a been a few rescues over the years but most recent was Joao Chianca, I had actually been getting smoked by the same set and I broke my board and was getting washed to shore when I heard the whistling so I initially thought somebody got a really good wave but then I realized the whistles didn’t stop and it turned into to a stomach turning sound we’ve heard too many times that you can tell it’s an emergency and something bad has happened.
I just looked around to see a couple of people running towards the channel
of pipe so I pulled my leash off and sprinted on the beach, the boys and lifeguards were just arriving and they did a great job I was just in a position where the lifeguard had to grab the “AED” defibrillator machine so I took over the c-spine head control which is very important in case the person has a neck/spinal injury which is really fragile and one wrong tiny move can paralyze someone for life. So we walked up the beach and lowered him down. He wasn’t breathing and his eyes were open. His skin was purple, I told the lifeguards he’s still not breathing so they started compressions. CPR while I held his head straight.
He started to couch up water and started breathing again, his color started to slowly come back. I was happy but I knew he still had a long road ahead.
There is no communication with a patient when they are unconscious and when he woke up he didn’t know what was going on, he just bent my finger backwards but his body was fighting for life so he didn’t know what was happening I was glad to feel his strength though. I don’t have anything going through my mind during a rescue I just focus on the task at hand and that was to get Joao breathing again.
Once I heard he was awake and healthy at the hospital and getting better, I felt content for him and his family. I’m good friend with Chumbo his older brother, we have nothing but love and respect for those guys.

Born in 1987. From Santa Cruz, Portugal. After starting to surf, 20+ years ago, the ocean became a place where he constantly seek inspiration, fun, and energy. It is in the ocean where he feels at home and useful to myself.
Surfing also became a bridge and a platform to a world of creating. Nowadays, he is dedicated to painting with watercolor, transfering the essence of surfing, traveling, and exploration of empty lineups into a painting.
