Restoring Your Energy

How we choose to restore our energy levels varies for each of us. What will replenish one person can deplete another, so you must recognise what works for you. All too often, we can get caught up in ‘doing’ and fail to notice our energy levels dropping, until we finally become exhausted.

Just as your car would not run without the necessary fuel, the same applies to your energy reserves – don’t wait until you are running on empty to refuel.

In Ayurveda, this relates to understanding your own ‘prakruti’ - your inherent nature - which guides you towards making supportive choices for your own mind/body constitution. Embracing who you are with all of your unique mental, physical and emotional qualities is fundamentally essential in Ayurveda. This can be further understood through the system of the doshas, details of which can be found in my previous columns.

When we are feeling energised, this emanates outwards in our lives, nourishing those closest to us and in turn, further afield. Whether that is in our own families, or within our community, we will feel more inspired to follow our dreams and to connect and help others when we feel restored.

Taking a step in the right direction towards an activity that nourishes and inspires you, can lead to other opportunities for looking after your health and wellbeing. One way to do this is by creating a vision board, a tactile way to get in touch with what motivates and inspires you.

Recently, I decided that I wanted to make more time for art, something I have always enjoyed. This one decision led to joining an art class and meeting a whole new group of people who

have generously taught me how to paint.

What makes you feel emotionally nourished? Try creating a space in your home or in your garden that feels safe and calming, a place where you can peacefully meditate. Being outside in nature or in an area that soothes your emotions, to slow down - take some deep breaths and feel grounded again.

Tending to your special space can go a long way to lifting your spirits. Choose a favourite aromatherapy oil which is uplifting, such as lemon, mandarin or a therapeutic blend that you find appealing. Clear any clutter and surround yourself with the things that bring you a sense of joy. This includes being with people who support and encourage you emotionally and with who you can offer the same in return.

What types of food do you find nourish you? Following a seasonal diet that is suited to your constitution can be easier to follow if you plan

ahead. Include a variety of herbs and spices for added flavour. Preparing your meals from the comfort of your kitchen is a great way to get creative with your food.

Exploring new experiences is another way to help lift your spirits and cultivate your sense of adventure. Feeling mentally and physically invigorated through our five senses encourages new ideas, helping us to feel motivated towards change. Whether that be taking part in a physical sport, taking a brisk walk, or visiting a library full of interesting books, a gallery or exhibition, or even reading an article or

Sleeping and resting are high on the list of priorities when it comes to restoring our energy. Most of us need at least seven hours for our body to repair and replenish. A good night’s sleep has the power to lift our mood for the better.

Consider these Ayurvedic tips for restoring your energy:

Find a meditation practice that works with your daily routine. It may suit you to walk in nature or to enjoy a quiet place at home, or you may prefer to join a meditation group.

Establish a regular bed time, aiming for 7-8 hours which is generally recommended. Begin to wind down at least an hour before you retire. Try an evening yoga routine to help you relax.

Massage the soles of your feet with a quality massage oil such as sesame oil. This helps to calm the nervous system and promotes restful sleep. Keep a personal journal by your bed to note down your thoughts and clear your mind. Reflect on your day with a sense of gratitude.

Recipe - Restorative Date Milk

This is a wonderfully soothing drink to help replenish your energy levels when they are low.

Warm between 2-3 fresh dates, finely chopped with seeds removed, in a generous cup of almond milk or milk of choice. Once the dates have softened, either blend until smooth or drink as is, sprinkled with a little nutmeg and cinnamon.
