Imposter Syndrome – What You Need to Know
By Dr Brooklyn Storme PhD
Have you ever said things like this to yourself, in your business: “I’m not qualified enough to speak about that”, “What makes me an authority on this subject area?”, “I’m not good enough to do that” and similar things? If so, it may be that you were experiencing what we call Imposter Syndrome.
By definition, Imposter Syndrome is - ‘the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills’ (Oxford Dictionary, 2020). It affects more entrepreneurs than not and it’s mostly women that experience the condition.
There’s been a great deal of research undertaken, and many agree that there are five types of Imposter Syndrome.
The first is - Superman or Superwoman. Perhaps you can recall a time in your workplace where there was one person that always arrived early or stayed back late. They volunteered for everything and were always busy, running from room to room or desk to desk. They may talk quickly, or look at their watch, or be huffing
and puffing from the energy they were exerting? This type of Imposter Syndrome usually occurs when someone is feeling less than competent with the work they should be doing. To compensate for that lack of competency and fear of being ‘found out’, they distract themselves and those around them by engaging in busy work. This works for a while, but a savvy manager or team member will often be able to determine what’s really going on for that person.

might say that they collect certificates, diplomas and degrees. The Expert panics when people seek them out for help because they underestimate their skills and abilities.
Another type of Imposter Syndrome is - The Perfectionist. This person is often consumed by making everything in their business, even their day-to-day tasks, precisely right because if they make a mistake, they will feel like a fraud. This type of Imposter Syndrome is a difficult one to manage, especially for new entrepreneurs who feel like they are on a huge learning curve. They are not only learning their actual job role, but they are also now needing to learn how to market the business, how to balance the books, how to create a business strategy and more. The fear of making a mistake and being ‘found out’ as not knowing it all or having all the answers is palpable.
The Expert is the third type. This person focusses their energy on what they know and on how much they know, to feel safe in their business. But what can end up happening is, that they never feel like they know enough and that means that they never feel like they are ‘good enough’ to do their job or share their knowledge. This personality can find themselves continually enrolling in courses to acquire new knowledge and friends The fourth type is - The Natural Genius. This type of personality is characterised by having things come very easily and very naturally to them. This person didn’t have to apply themselves too diligently to meet the expectations of others, learn new information, perform a task. The pitfall for this type of personality can be when they find themselves in a new or foreign situation and they don’t know what to do. That experience can make them feel profoundly uneasy because they are not used to the process of adapting and learning in the same way as their peers.
Finally, there is - The Soloist. This type is often characterised as an individual who feels that they need to be highly competent in every area of running the business. They feel that they must be able to do everything. The problem here however, can be when the Soloist runs into a tricky situation at work that propels them into a position of needing to ask for help. It’s the asking for help that triggers feelings of inadequacy, incompetence and of being a fraud. It’s often, for those reasons, that they’ll avoid asking for help and they’ll put themselves through all kinds of pain to find the solutions or answers for themselves.

Imposter Syndrome is a commonly occurring experience in business and it’s seen more often in younger women than men, mostly in the entrepreneurial space. The good news is that when you start to work in a way that is aligned with who you are, who you serve and how you serve them, a lot of these fears tend to fall by the wayside naturally. For other people, it might take longer and be a bit more challenging. In this case, I strongly recommend you seek support from someone like a Business Coach. I’d be more than happy to help you, so feel free to connect anytime.
