NEW ZEALAND FASHION YEAR IN REVIEW

T

his year has been a tough one for the New Zealand fashion industry. No one in the sector will pretend otherwise.

Retail has felt the weight of tightened spending, rising costs and ongoing uncertainty, and the knock-on effect has been real for designers, stockists and the wider creative community.

Store closures, reduced ranges and brands quietly stepping back from the industry have all shaped the mood of 2025. It has been a year that demanded grit, not gloss.

At the same time, New Zealand fashion showed its usual resourcefulness. Designers continued to refine their craft, focusing on tighter edits, smarter production and pieces built to last. Consumers have become more selective, and the industry has shifted in response. The conversation is now centred on value, transparency and authenticity rather than volume. It has been a year where creativity had to work harder, but it also grew sharper.

A personal highlight for us was attending Paris Fashion Week.

Experiencing that environment firsthand was energising. The scale and intensity of the shows offered a useful

reminder of just how fast the global fashion world is moving. Trends there are pushed forward quickly, but the underlying narrative is becoming more deliberate and calm. Tailoring, texture and a sense of real craft stood out, and those cues offer inspiration for what could translate meaningfully back home. Being in Paris also reinforced the importance of staying outward-looking, even when times feel difficult locally.

On the home front the commentary has been frank. Many retailers have spoken openly about slowing foot traffic, higher operating costs and the challenge of holding margin. Designers have faced rising material costs, shifting wholesale demand and customers who are thinking longer about every purchase. Several well-known names chose to close their doors or step back from producing collections, a reminder that passion alone cannot offset financial pressure. Yet within that, some labels found opportunities to pivot, streamline or connect more directly with their communities.

Looking ahead, the colour of 2026 being white feels symbolic. White is honest. It shows everything, asks for precision and leaves no room for

shortcuts. It suggests a fresh start, cleaner lines and a sense of clarity. After a year that tested the industry, white feels like an invitation to rebuild with intention. It encourages designers to strip things back, focus on quality and create work that feels grounded and future-ready.

If this year proved anything, it is that New Zealand fashion has heart. The challenges have been real, but the talent and community remain strong.

The next chapter will demand creativity, collaboration and courage, and there is every reason to believe the industry is ready for it.

Founded in 2004 from a bedroom floor, Jimmy D grew into a recognisable name in the local fashion landscape, known for its bold approach to self expression and its commitment to New Zealand made production. Over two decades, the label built a loyal following and carved out a distinct creative voice, dressing thousands of customers and fostering a strong community around the brand.

REMEMBERING VERE SHARMA The New Zealand fashion community is mourning the passing of Vere Sharma, who passed away on Tuesday, 2 December. Vere was a widely respected industry figure whose contribution to New Zealand fashion spanned more than four decades, influencing both the commercial direction of the sector and the people working within it.

Vere began his professional career as an accountant before moving into the textile trade, a shift that would define his life’s work. In the late 1980s, he and his wife Christine founded De Vere Investments, initially operating from the front lounge of their Devonport home. The business steadily grew into a diversified operation supplying textiles, manufactured goods and garments across New Zealand and offshore markets.

alm emerged as a defining undercurrent of the Spring 2026 collections, offering a quieter, more introspective approach to design.

Across the runways, designers softened silhouettes, lightened palettes, and embraced fluidity, creating looks that felt restorative rather than demanding. This season, fashion slowed its pulse, favouring ease, balance, and restraint as markers of modern luxury.

Chloé set the tone with a hue like Mara 1-610 with its gently

romantic expression of serenity. Airy layers draped softly around the body, with flowing fabric that moved naturally rather than holding structure. The silhouette felt instinctive and unforced, capturing the brand’s signature femininity through lightness and ease.

It was a reminder that softness, when executed with intention, carries its own quiet authority.

Shiatzy Chen followed with a refined interpretation of calm through controlled tailoring. Clean lines and a muted palette like Mara 6-320 grounded the look, while subtle textural contrasts added depth

without disruption. The composition felt measured and precise, presenting serenity as something disciplined and considered rather than purely delicate.

Coperni approached stillness through modern minimalism. A pared back silhouette, softened by fluid construction, balanced structure with movement. The look, similar to Mara 1-3796, felt suspended between technical clarity and emotional restraint, showing how contemporary design can convey calm without losing its edge.

Zimmermann brought a sense of lightness through colours like Mara 2-170, draped forms and gentle volume.

URRENT Fabric gathered and released softly, creating silhouettes that floated rather than clung. The effect was romantic yet restrained, evoking a sense of quiet escape that aligned seamlessly with the season’s more tranquil mood.

CFCL explored serenity through rhythm and repetition. Sculptural knitwear wrapped the body in continuous, flowing lines, offering comfort without excess. The look felt meditative in its construction, using precision and simplicity to create a sense of visual calm that was both modern and deeply wearable with hues like Mara 11-2167.

UJOH closed the story with a softly structured approach in a perfect match to Mara 2-8423. Relaxed tailoring and fluid proportions worked together to create a composed silhouette that felt intentional yet unrestrictive. The look embodied a balance between function and softness, reinforcing calm as a contemporary design value rather than a passive one.

Across Spring 2026, calm became more than an aesthetic choice. It emerged as a response to overstimulation, positioning fashion as a space for pause, reflection, and emotional clarity. In these collections, serenity was not about absence, but about thoughtful presence, shaping garments that feel as restorative as they are refined.

Hunter Luxury, in partnership with Charlotte Tilbury, has delivered three stunning pleated fan-inspired vanity, mini brush, and lipstick cases for the brand’s signature Christmas 2025 collection titled ‘Charlotte’s Gifting Universe’.

esigned to exude elegance and deliver on reusability, the classic Pillow Talk nudepink and complementary crimson velour gift set was developed to combine beauty, functionality, and longevity for the brand’s customers at launch this September.

Following a long-standing relationship with Charlotte Tilbury, the stunning Pillow Talk vanity case showcases Hunter Luxury’s excellent command of the well-renowned brand.

The nude pink case, complete with padding and pleating detail to the lid on a greyboard frame, features rose gold colouring on its foil logo, handle stays, clasp, and debossed diamond lozenge, and a branded monogram on the front of the lid.

The interior is completed with a mirror and a satin-covered border to echo the brand's sophisticated style.

Complementing the Pillow Talk gift set is a plush crimson velvet Mini Brush case with front and back panel pleating

and a velvet wrist strap, followed by a mirror on the inside of the lid, alongside a velvet lip-shaped lipstick case with pleating to its top panel only.

Both cases are complete with a satin polyester interior and feature a nylon zipper with rose gold plating.

INNOVATE WITH ‘SPF SANDWICH’ IN MIND The ‘SPF sandwich’ hack (layering sunscreen under and over makeup) is trending. While social media trends can be fleeting, this hack has lasting potential if positioned well: • Highlight how it’s easy to do and provides enhanced protection; as Mintel’s research reveals that convenience and durability are sought-after sunscreen claims.

• Address pilling/greasiness with lightweight, sweat-proof formats that layer seamlessly, like mists or emerging brush-on formats.

C

onsumers want more from sunscreen than just UV protection; 59 percent of Chinese sunscreen users agree products should offer more skincare benefits.

But with moisturising claims appearing on over half of sunscreen launches in 2024-25, and ‘for sensitive skin’ claims on a third (as reported on Mintel Global New Products Database), ‘skinify’ suncare in more disruptive ways to drive growth.

CAPITALISE ON K-BEAUTY 3.0 Brightening claims are growing in sunscreen innovation, appealing to a third of Brazilian sunscreen users who prioritise natural glow.

• Elevate brightening claims by tapping into the 2025 K-Beauty wave which focuses on healthy radiance, skin barrier health and science-backed formulas.

• Develop K-Beauty-inspired sunscreen for melanated skin, inspired by Galskin.

TAP INTO LONGEVITY BEAUTY Preventing signs of ageing is a top motivator for purchasing sunscreen. In Canada, 57 percent of sunscreen users apply it more often due to concerns about ageing (vs 56 percent for skin cancer prevention).

• Longevity skincare trends – targeting biological age/cellular ageing and preventative ageing – can enhance ‘skinification’ of suncare.

• Leverage ageing-simulation tools like Haut.AI’s SPF Truth Booth.

• Address vitamin D’s role in longevity by including VMS or using activated vitamin D SPF tech like Boost Lab’s Goody Goody Sun Drops SPF 50+.

• Consider on-trend longevity actives like PDRN, ATP and NAD+.

ADDRESS THE GLP-1 IMPACT The focus on GLP-1 and weight loss drugs is reshaping the BPC landscape.

In the UK, half of 25-34 year olds show interest in injectable weight loss drugs, and NPD targeting ‘GLP-1 face’ is emerging (e.g. Volulift).

• Innovate sunscreen with GLP-1 in mind, like Dr Few, who suggests GLP-1 drugs may increase skin’s sun sensitivity and recommends daily SPF to protect skin and progress.

• Focus on boosting skin resilience and preventing damage to compromised skin.

• Target both GLP-1 and non-GLP-1 users to broaden reach and imply higher efficacy.

DON’T OVERLOOK AFTERSUN ‘Skinify’ aftersun, an under-innovated segment that has seen a decline in innovation (2020-2025) on the Mintel Global New Products Database.

There is potential for a resurgence in aftersun, given rising social media trends that glamourise sunburn aesthetics.

Brands are responding. La RochePosay’s #DermsAgainstBurns campaign tackles viral TikTok trends such as ‘burn lines’ and ‘sunburn tattoos’.

Innovate in this overlooked segment, focusing on repair/regeneration, taking cues from Zure Solaris, a luxury ‘post-suncare’ brand using biotech ingredients like ectoin, arginine and The Solar Repair Complex.

Ski slopes and mountain chalets meet runway-ready style in the latest collaboration between Nike and Jacquemus.

ooted in technical materials, design and innovation, the Nike x Jacquemus Après Ski apparel collection channelled the French designer’s subversive, functional and fashion-forward sensibility into a playful world built around the mountain lifestyle.

“I have always been a fan of skiing: It’s my favourite sport and has been my favourite winter getaway since I was young,” said Simon Porte Jacquemus.

“Ski attire has always fascinated me, and I’m a big collector of vintage ’80s ski pieces. This collection with Nike is an opportunity for me to bring a new fashion story into our collaboration and into the ski community, which is a first for me.”

The 18-piece collection has been designed to offer uncompromised winter-sport performance and style for skiers, snowboarders, and all athletes who enjoy the mountain lifestyle.

At the centre of the collection are triple-layer GORE-TEX jackets and pants built for snowstorms, slope-side cocktails and everything in between.

The two-in-one GORE-TEX jacket features an exterior water- and windproof shell with beautiful tailoring and exclusive Nike x Jacquemus details, combined with a zip-in interior bomber jacket with Primaloft insulation, a Swoosh at the chest, and Jacquemus branding across the shoulders.

A second women’s style features

John Lewis has unveiled two brand-new concepts at its newly refurbished Bluewater store, delivering its first-ever 650-square-metre Gifting Emporium and the most significant change to its Home department following a nearly GBP 10m investment.

he ambitious overhaul comes in response to customer demand, with visits to the brand’s online gifting hub up 15 percent year-on-year.

The new Gifting Emporium, spanning an area roughly the size of three tennis courts, is home to almost 1,800 new products and 14 new brands, offering inspiration and a curated selection of gifts for all occasions that customers can explore firsthand.

These are grouped by passion points such as ‘Home Lover’, ‘Hobbies & Adventure’, ‘Botanist’, ‘Foodie’, ‘Spa & Wellbeing’, and ‘Kids’.

In parallel, the Bluewater store debuts the biggest-ever change to John Lewis' Home department. Moving beyond

individual products, the new concept invites customers to shop by inspiration.

Everyone passionate about interiors can experience their dream space with five distinct styles curated by in-house designers: ‘Heritage’, ‘Modern Lux’, ‘Scandi’, ‘Rustic’, and ‘Timeless’. ith locations across New Zealand, Allbirds & Friends stores have been built around community connection and a shared love of movement and the outdoors.

In the heart of Queenstown, Compendium Group organised an Allbirds & Friends Neighbourhood Pop-Up last month, which brought Allbirds to one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations, offering locals and visitors the chance to experience the brand in person.

Alongside a curated selection of purpose-led companion brands, including Hydro Flask, Cotopaxi, and Nocs Provisions, the pop-up also included seasonal features from additional like-minded partners.

The space honoured Allbirds' origins, inspired by New Zealand’s natural materials, landscapes and relaxed

movement, making Queenstown a fitting place to showcase the brand’s spirit and story.

The Group partnered with Tailor Inc. for this build, as Da Silva said they knew how to make small spaces meaningful, understood the love for natural materials and simple design, and could move fast without compromising quality, with a four-week turnaround.

Johnathan Lopes Da Silva, co-CEO of Compendium Group, said that Queenstown was where nature, creativity, and adventure collided, and that was precisely what Allbirds & Friends stood for.

“Allbirds was born from New Zealand’s natural materials and our relaxed way of living. The pop-up channels are created through simple design, warm textures and playful colour. We also repurposed as much as we could, from fixtures we already

owned to parts of the existing space, a very Allbirds move,” said Da Silva.

At the same time, Kelly Cundell, coCEO of Compendium Group, mentioned that the team was focused on building retail spaces that championed genuine brand storytelling, especially for brands with purpose, impact and sustainability at their core.

As a community-focused activation in a touristy hub, Da Silva said that the goal of the pop-up was to create micro-moments of connection, such as discovering a local maker, hearing the story behind New Zealand merino, or chatting with someone about their travels.

Another big part of the Neighbourhood Pop-Up model has been spotlighting local creators. In Queenstown, the Group partnered with Wolf Coffee in Arrowtown and with Boatshed Bakery, along with iconic

brands and experiences including Canyon Brewing, Sherwood, New Zealand Open, Cardrona, NZ Ski, and the Watershed saunas.

“We focus on universal things like warmth, simplicity, comfort, and a story worth sharing. Locals want authenticity, domestic travellers want discovery, and international visitors are looking for something distinctly ‘New Zealand’.

Our brands naturally bridge all three groups,” said Da Silva.

“Together, these partnerships help us support local businesses, champion shared values like wellness and sustainability, and create meaningful experiences for both visitors and locals.”

Da Silva highlighted that Hydro Flask’s Refill For Good ethos, Cotopaxi’s Do Good mission, Nocs’ call to get closer to nature, and Allbirds’ low-impact design all point toward a future where

conscious retail becomes the norm.

Looking ahead, Allbirds & Friends will expand into more neighbourhoods, more collaborations, and deeper storytelling around material innovation and circularity, as Da Silva mentioned that pop-ups help test neighbourhoods, audiences, and formats without long leases and provide a read on how people want to interact with the portfolio.

Heading into summer, Neighbourhood Pop-Up will showcase the freshest drops across the brand portfolio, along with some incredible collaborations and an &Friends event, similar to the monthly series that has been hugely successful at Britomart.

AUTOSTORE GOES LIVE AT BLECKMANN BERGEN OP ZOOM Bleckmann has unveiled its advanced automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) at its distribution centre in Bergen op Zoom (NL).

he AutoStore system has revolutionised traditional warehousing by using up to seven times less space while dramatically increasing storage capacity. This enables multiple customers’ SKUs to be stored simultaneously, reducing stock shortages and optimising fulfilment.

Radio-controlled robots retrieve items, eliminating manual picking and accelerating processing from the moment a product enters.

Beyond AutoStore, the BergenOp-Zoom site features an advanced conveyor system, carton erectors, and an autonomous packing line with carton height reduction. This Autostore solution supports later cut-off times for next-day delivery, intelligent demand forecasting, and rapid dispatch during peak periods.
