T

he aged care industry globally is changing, with seniors living longer and preferring to stay within their communities and support groups through ‘ageing in place’ options. For those meeting these changing attitudes, developers and operators are challenging societal attitudes towards ageing by abolishing the ‘rest home for old people’ stereotype and adopting new approaches to retirement, aged care and assisted living. Retirement living is evolving to reflect the changing expectations of a new wave of seniors increasingly demanding more and better options. The global trend is for smaller villages or assisted living facilities. Places where a smaller group of seniors live together supported by a network of caregivers and supporting professionals. This option fosters independence and quality of life for seniors living longer than previous generations. The sector relies heavily on acquiring desirable real estate locations with innovative new building designs. Developers are

challenging stereotypical approaches to raise capital, and there are now different ways seniors can enter retirement village living. Through it all, 2022 brings a more holistic approach to senior living. Taking this holistic approach means that the emotional, social and personal support required is on hand to ensure that seniors quality of life is of the highest possible standard. A support network of caregivers, dietitians, nutritionists, chefs, dentists, doctors, speech pathologists, physio and activity managers are vital contributors to the sense of wellbeing and community in a village or care facility. Each is vital to the makeup and fabric of excellent retirement and care offerings in New Zealand, and seniors love it.

ENTERTAINMENT

Creating an Inclusive

Is it the shortest day or longest day – come on, teams, you’ve got this!

4

2022 BUYER'S GUIDE

Have you seen how Wordle has taken the world by storm in 2022? Have you felt the addiction of waiting for each daily puzzle and then experienced that dopamine hit from solving it as those green tiles tick-over?

Residents love The Chase, and Shaun Wallace, aka “The Dark Destroyer”, is our brand ambassador. Here he is at Pinesong Village in Titirangi in 2019, quizzing against two of the village’s residents during one of his two visits to our shores.

Our quizzes come with pre-printed answer booklets.

A team at Remuera Gardens discuss a possible answer to the Ponderous Puzzle.

T

hat thrill is also the basis of why quiz events are so successful. People enjoy giving the correct answer to a question that none of their teammates could, and of course, subsequently winning the quiz! Quiz nights are an excellent addition to village entertainment and a must-add to any schedule, but we bet you already know that, right? No doubt you already run some trivia quiz event. Quizzes even get the wellness tick as an excellent exercise for both the brain and memory. A Believe It or Not quiz night is slightly different. More than just six rounds of questions, Believe It or Not quizzes have extra components such as Last Man Standing, Ponderous Puzzle and The List. To play, gather residents into teams. Add in some tasty food and drink, and soon a regular monthly event is locked in as

residents gather with friends for a chance to shine. Or take it a step further – open up quizzing to the public, and suddenly there’s an extra marketing arrow in your quiver. Allow residents to create teams by inviting family and friends from outside the village to participate. Who are we? Founded in 1998, Believe It or Not is New Zealand’s largest provider of all things trivia - notably regular pub quizzes, corporate and charity events. We are also the preferred supplier to Air New Zealand with our quiz questions seen on their planes and provide NZME and various TV shows with their quizzes. You can trust us to deliver a great entertainment package at your retirement village. We’ve been developing a retirement village product for some time now, and our research shows that questions need

to be topical, fun, and relevant to the age group. We had the opportunity to work with several major operators during the initial lockdowns of 2020. We distributed free fun handouts, ran many virtual events, and took feedback as we went. Our main takeaway was that the residents loved quizzes! Many villages already run in-house quizzes, so we have created a more indepth multimedia quiz with a distinct point of difference. It will fit your monthly entertainment schedule as it won’t interfere with anything you currently do. So confident are we in our quizzes that we’d like to offer you a no-obligation free self-hosted multimedia quiz to try in your village. Each quiz is usually $95 plus GST. DESIGN INSPIRATION FOR 2022

Comforting memories through appreciation of the natural qualities brought to life by artisans is the theme for 2022.

T

his year designers are pulling inspiration from the Minimalism, Mid-Century Modern, and Boho design styles. Also, Organic Modern style is all about designing a raw and refined space that subtly layers organic elements, forms, and hues against a backdrop of sophisticated and modern simplicity. Though trends are very transient, this year we are living in a world in which digital is merging with offline. Even if this might appear disconcerting for some, look closer as it opens new possibilities to connect with nature. Technology now allows printing

companies to develop sustainable alternatives that are in tune with nature. Technology has also allowed for rendering specific light waves visible to the human eye, for instance, blue, red and ultraviolet light that enhance mood. The Hyper Nature trend allows for bright and lucid colours with blurred nuances of green and grey. Macramé, in keeping with the craft movement, terry, summer tweeds, bouclés, light coloured plaids and stripes are all key for textiles in 2022. The craftsmanship for unique finishes or handwoven textiles is now greatly in demand, each piece evocative of unique not assembly line.

HEALTH & WELLBEING OF A GREYING POPULATION Healthy ageing is related to a broad spectrum of health issues, from cognitive, bones, joints, muscles, cardiovascular to digestive problems.

T

he health of a greying population is big business. Companies are focusing new research on ageing and new products addressing health issues like hearing loss, cataracts and refractive errors, osteoarthritis, pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression and, of course, dementia. The pandemic has had a massive impact on older adults. For those working in villages or care facilities, there have been many learnings taken from the global response to the care of vulnerable seniors. Many of the changes in care will continue long after the pandemic has passed, and hopefully, we will be better placed for handling the next one. Living longer brings not only opportunities but challenges. Some additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as

12

2022 BUYER'S GUIDE

further education, a new hobby or activity. Older adults are also continuing to contribute to their communities through volunteering. Still, the degree that they can contribute relies heavily on their health. Research suggests that the proportion of a person’s life where they are in good health has remained reasonably constant, implying that these additional years are when we are in poor health. It is extra years in good health that we all aspire. Living in a supportive environment, eating well and healthily, having the ability to maintain friendships, and of course, a reasonable degree of fitness and mobility. As there is no typical 80 year old, the diversity seen in older age is not a random occurrence. Aside from genes, people’s

physical and social environments directly impact their opportunities and health. In year two of the Decade of Healthy Ageing, declared by The United Nations General Assembly, a global collaboration is working together on a concerted, catalytic and collaborative action that will foster longer and healthier lives. During this decade, we will see more research given to the various issues affecting older adults and attention to the overwhelming instance of dementia that is coming. The changes in retirement living options, attention to healthy food offerings, and the mental health of an increasingly ageing population are excellent signs that the Decade of Healthy Ageing has started well. But, there is so much more to be done.

THE AGED CARE KITCHEN IN 2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness of the need to improve the food offered in aged care facilities. Part of the discussion revolves around the specific training of chefs in aged care kitchens.

T

exture modification, the need for pureed food, a focus on healthy food for the elderly and the impact of conditions such as dementia and dysphagia on diet and appetite are all underrepresented in food-skills training. Fortunately, several education providers have responded by including new training modules/courses on Aged Care foodservice. The addition of such training will help improve foodservice in Aged Care. Another big challenge in the kitchen is always going to be budget allocations.

24

2022 BUYER'S GUIDE

Equipment upgrades for kitchens, increased and flexible food budgets and equipment upgrades also need addressing. In Australia, these were hot topics in the findings of the Royal Commission. This year could see work done in the sector in Australia towards re-assigning resources and providing budget increases to all aspects of food in Aged Care. How much and where the aged eat have been identified as needing improvement to understand poor appetite, including suitable foods and proper support at mealtimes. Residents with dementia, for

example, often find it challenging to sit and eat. Some facilities have found that a transition to finger food offerings has helped some residents from low or no appetite to eating well and eating more. The presentation of food and even the dining room ambience have come under scrutiny. Table settings, sound, lighting, plating, and aroma all play a part in helping older adults eat well.

BRING THE HEALTHY TASTE OF HOME, TO YOUR HOME EVERY DAY There is something unmistakable about the taste of home cooking. It triggers memories; filling the heart with joy and, when made right, ticking all the boxes on the dietician’s checklist for a healthy, happy human!

A lite option that’s still heavy on the homestyle Recently, Angel Bay added more lite alternatives to their beef patty lineup. The Angel Bay team wanted to help dieticians enhance menu planning and ease of preparation, helping you meet the special and general needs of residents by crafting products that underpin a balanced yet varied weekly menu.

Anyone can cook them Busy aged care facilities need healthy, delicious menu options that anyone can make. That, right there, is the genius behind the Angel Bay brand - making it ‘every day easy’ to achieve high-end results.

Finding someone to prepare delicious, nutritious meals is not a problem with Angel Bay Lite patties. They are partcooked to a final weight of 54g, bulked packed in a lined carton ready to be removed and heated to >75°C in a hot plate, microwave, oven, BBQ and even air fryer, then eaten.

High nutritional value Angel Bay is popular with aged care facilities because their homestyle beef and lamb products consistently deliver quality, nutritional products that are simply delicious. Each 54-gram patty provides 8.9 grams of protein and only 328 kilojoules per serve.

Multiple menu options American style or with a little bit of beetroot, mate - as a cheeseburger or in a pita pocket? What about a simple open sandwich for a Sunday lunch? There are many ways to unpack this staple ingredient, ensuring a varied menu that delivers high

These new lite beef patties are made with a reduced-fat, low sodium formulation compared to the Angel Bay Beef Burger Patties. They might be lite in fat and sodium, but they are still soft with a chunky texture and a meaty beef taste.

Bring home the taste of homestyle and deliver it with ease, every day - with Angel Bay.

ANGEL BAY. EVERY DAY DELICIOUS. For our full range of delicious patties go to angelbay.co.nz and contact your distributor to order.

100% NATURAL HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS Proudly made in Christchurch, the Nutri Zing range of 100% Natural health supplements promote bone density, joint mobility, and support the immune system.

As a company that believes enhancing health should be simple and natural, customers can be confident that Nutri Zing fuels the body with the best ingredients Mother Nature has to offer. Nutri Zing Fish Bone Calcium Powder capsules are produced from wild fish caught according to the New Zealand Quota Management System, a sustainable fishing resource. It is comprised of approx. 25% calcium, 12.5% phosphorus, 25% protein and 14% marine collagen, with the remainder being other natural minerals. Vitamin D3 and K2 are included for optimal calcium absorption. Fish bones naturally contain calcium and phosphorus in the right ratio of approximately 2:1 to form hydroxyapatite, which is considered the most bioavailable form of calcium. Research conducted by Massey University revealed that United Fisheries’ fish bone powder had a significant effect on osteoblast cells in vitro. Fish bone Powder stimulated the bone-making osteoblast cells to produce more mineral. Nutri Zing’s Greenshell

Mussel capsules (for humans) and tablets (for pets) are made from the very best Greenshell mussels harvested from the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. Researchers have found that New Zealand Greenshell Mussels are rich in glycosaminoglycan (GAG). These complex carbohydrates provide essential structural components for the cell walls, mucous membranes and the connective tissue of bones, teeth, tendons, and cartilage. GAG is also essential to the healthy functioning of the cardiovascular, lymphatic, and endocrine systems, along with the arterial and capillary walls. They also play a major role in the corneal and retinal fluid of the eyes and synovial fluid of the joints. All the procedures used when producing the Nutri Zing range comply with the regulations and guidelines of New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). Every care is taken throughout the process to ensure the fullest retention possible of all the nutritional goodness (in its biologically active state), and to maintain consistent and complete customer satisfaction.
