Over the off-season, we’ve put in a lot of effort to ensure our shop and machinery are ready for the upcoming season, with the Manchester 5S initiative and CLAIRE event playing key roles in boosting both safety and efficiency.
A big thanks to the teams who made it happen. Your efforts ensure we’re all set for a safe and productive season!
A NOTE FROM AMANDA
As we kick off another season, I want to take a moment to thank each of you for the work you do every day. It’s not just asphalt, dirt, and concrete—we’re building the foundation of how people live, work, and connect. Every project we complete plays a role in keeping our communities moving forward, and that’s something we can all be proud to build together.
In our annual refresher training, we’ve been talking about the progress infrastructure has made over the years. In 1919, it took two months for the Transcontinental Convoy to cross the country. Today, 1.5 million vehicles pass through Kansas City every single day. That’s not just a number—that’s the result of decades of hard work and dedication from people just like you. You’re a part of something much bigger than just getting the job done—you’re building tomorrow, today.
But none of that matters if it’s not done safely. No deadline, budget, or project is more important than your well-being. If something doesn’t look right, stop and speak up. We have your back.
Thank you again for the commitment and determination you bring to the job every single day. Let’s make this a great season. Take care of each other out there!

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT
HUMAN RESOURCES
HR is putting in the work behind the scenes to make sure everyone is ready for the season ahead.
We’re excited to give a shout out to our amazing Human Resources team as they prepare for the busy season ahead. Zack Bailey, Jeny Erickson, and Abigale Kincaid have already kicked off 2025 with a huge focus on one of HR’s biggest and most important tasks: Crew Bring Backs. This involves getting hundreds of crew members through critical sessions to update everyone on everything from safety protocols to company processes. These sessions are essential to make sure everyone’s prepared for what’s ahead, and it’s all hands on deck to make sure no one misses out.
Organizing something this big is no small feat, but HR makes it look easy. They handle everything— scheduling the sessions for each crew, making sure the right information gets to everyone, and keeping things moving smoothly. It’s all about getting the details right which HR does flawlessly. And while they’re doing all of this, they’re also
keeping up with all their regular responsibilities, from answering employee questions to handling the everyday tasks that keep the department running.
But that’s just the start. HR goes above and beyond to make sure every crew member is set up for success. From reviewing employment details to answering questions and making sure everything’s in place, they keep everything organized and running like clockwork. Thanks to them, our teams can dive back into the season feeling confident and ready to tackle whatever comes their way.
We couldn’t be prouder of the HR team and the hard work they put in behind the scenes. Their dedication is what keeps everything running smoothly and allows our crews to focus on doing their best work out in the field. They truly make a difference, and we’re so grateful for everything they do.

We know the work we do today directly shapes the world of tomorrow. Our “Building Tomorrow, Today” campaign is all about recognizing the hard work, skill, and pride each crew member brings to every project. As we move into the next quarter, let’s remember this: every paving job, every grade, and every site preparation we complete is crucial in shaping the future. Together, we’re not just working the land—we’re laying the foundation for what’s yet to come.

JENNIFER BREUER // VICE PRESIDENT OF QUALITY & MATERIALS
2025 QAQC Summit with Buzz Powell // Asphalt Pavement Alliance
Earlier this quarter, we had the privilege of hosting Buzz Powell from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance for a session on enhancing our asphalt production practices. With his extensive experience at the NCAT Test Track and his work with NAPA, Buzz brought a wealth of knowledge that provided our teams with fresh perspectives on how we can further improve our operations.
Buzz covered a broad range of crucial topics, starting with stockpile management and moisture mitigation. He shared practical tips for controlling moisture levels, which significantly impact material performance and production efficiency. He also highlighted the importance of plant calibration to ensure our equipment is running at peak performance, helping us achieve consistent, high-quality results with every project.
A key focus of the session was on loader operation and aggregate quality. Buzz walked us through how refining our handling techniques can preserve material quality, ensuring we maintain consistent mixes. Additionally, he shared best practices for working with Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), an area we’re passionate about for sustainability. His tips on maximizing RAP efficiency will allow us to reduce environmental impact without compromising quality.
Buzz also emphasized the importance of strengthening our quality control (QC) checks.
He provided strategies for fine-tuning QC practices to ensure we consistently deliver top-tier results. He explained how small adjustments to our mix can improve durability and shared methods for optimizing additives to achieve the best performance. Buzz also discussed balanced mix design, showing us how to meet performance goals while aligning with sustainability objectives in a cost-effective way.
The session was packed with actionable insights our teams can implement right away to enhance our processes. We’re incredibly grateful to Buzz for sharing his expertise and helping us stay at the forefront of asphalt paving. Thanks to his insights, we’re better equipped to build stronger, more durable roads, and we’re excited to put his advice into practice as we move forward!
Each year, Women in Construction (WIC) Week celebrates the role of women in the construction industry. Established in 1998, this annual event has steadily grown, honoring the achievements and contributions of women across the field. This year’s theme, “Together We Rise,” highlights the pivotal role women play in shaping the future of construction. At Superior Bowen, we were proud to join the celebration by recognizing just a few of the remarkable women who are driving positive change and making a lasting impact.

SITEWORKS PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
KANSAS CITY INTERMODAL TERMINAL
SB is leading a large, fast-moving infrastructure project with K-Five and UP, coordinating crews to deliver on a tight schedule.
SB is at the helm of a large-scale infrastructure project with lead contractor, K-Five Construction Co. and Union Pacific (UP), managing a wide range of crews and scopes across a busy job site. With Mike Huffmaster leading the field execution and overseeing 10 subcontractors and material suppliers on the SB side, this job has been a true team effort from the start.
Located on a sprawling 65+ acre site, this project includes more than 76,000 cubic yards of excavation, 50,000 cubic yards of embankment, and the removal of up to 20,000 tons of hazardous (impacted) soil. It’s big—and it’s moving fast. We’ve already completed over 15,000 of the 150,000 total square yards of cement stabilization
on existing subgrades and fills for the Cement Stabilized Subbase. On top of that, our team is producing another 150,000+ square yards of aggregate base and cement material onsite using a Rapidmix 400CV pug mill, creating a high-quality Cement Stabilized Base. When complete, we’ll have placed over 85,000 tons of asphalt across the terminal and public roadway network.
Behind those numbers is a powerhouse team. Every SB crew—from SiteWorks and Asphalt to Safety and Survey—has stepped up to meet the challenge.

Special thanks to Jennifer Breuer and Toby Oberman at the plants, whose work will be essential in keeping production levels high— especially with the demand for pre-heated tonnage and a target of 3,000 tons per day during peak paving operations. John Belger and team have been instrumental in setting up grade control on equipment for the project.
With a substantial completion date set for June 30, this project has been running on an accelerated schedule from the outset, with work ongoing through the fall. The SiteWorks and Asphalt teams have worked hand-inhand to sequence operations, and with tight tolerances for slope and smoothness, we’re deploying 3D paving and grading equipment to deliver precision on every pass.
Even with a site this large, space has been tight. Between active tracks, large material stockpiles, and multiple crews working simultaneously, our teams have had to elevate coordination efforts to a new level. And they’ve delivered.
This is the kind of project that showcases what SB does best—collaborating across departments, solving complex logistical challenges, and executing with precision and professionalism. We’re proud of what this team has accomplished, and we’re looking forward to bringing it across the finish line.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make progress and deliver results for K-Five, UP, and Team SB.
