Working closely with your doctor allows you to actively manage high LDL Cholesterol

These days, wellness information is practically everywhere you turn. Do this; don’t do that. Eat more of this; eat less of that. This is good for you; that is bad. It can be hard to cut through all the noise, but the reality is, when it comes to something as serious as your heart health and LDL Cholesterol - the “bad” Cholesterol - ignoring it can be downright dangerous for your health.

According to the American Heart Association, about every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a Heart Attack, and Strokes occur at about the same frequency. High LDL Cholesterol, often called “bad” Cholesterol, significantly increases your risk of Heart Disease.

A poll conducted by The Harris Poll for the American Heart Association revealed 75% of Heart Attack and Stroke survivors reported having High Cholesterol. Yet nearly half (47%) of Heart Attack and Stroke survivors are unaware of their LDL Cholesterol number. This lack of awareness shows more knowledge is needed to help survivors proactively manage their health.

In fact, knowledge is key to reducing your risk of Heart Disease. Understanding the

It’s not about dropping out. It’s about stepping back - intentionally - for a few months or more, to rest, reflect, or pursue something outside of the usual 9-to-5. For some, it’s a break after burnout. For others, it’s a planned gap between roles, a chance to travel, recover from stress, or finally try that thing they’ve always wanted to do. Unlike sabbaticals or short vacations, a micro-retirement has a different feel. It’s a personal reset, not tied to productivity or paychecks. And increasingly, people are choosing very specific places to do it.

Careerminds, a global outplacement and career development firm, surveyed 3,007 workers to find out where they’d most like to spend their microretirement. The results show a strong lean toward places that offer calm, nature, and room to breathe.

Below are the top 5:

#1 Hilo, Hawaii

Topping the list, Hilo is more than just scenic - it’s serene. Waterfalls, black sand beaches, and a rich local culture make it easy to slow down and breathe differently. You don’t just visit Hilo; you settle into it.

#2 Kauai, Hawaii

Coming in second, Kauai offers raw, unfiltered beauty. The pace here is unhurried, the landscape lush, and the days often

impact of LDL Cholesterol and knowing your LDL number can help you make informed decisions.

Cholesterol: The Good and The Bad Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance your body needs to build cells and produce hormones. However, not all Cholesterol is created equal:

• LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol:

This is the “bad” Cholesterol. When too much LDL Cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can build up in the inner walls of the Arteries that feed the Heart and Brain, forming Plaque that can narrow and eventually block these Arteries, leading to Heart Attack or Stroke.

• HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol:

Known as the “good” Cholesterol, HDL helps remove the “bad” Cholesterol from the Arteries, protecting against Heart Attack and Stroke.

A Silent Threat

Many people think high Cholesterol has obvious signs, but that’s not always the case. In fact, about half of U.S. adults and 42% of Heart Attack and Stroke survivors mistakenly believe High Cholesterol has clear symptoms. However, High LDL Cholesterol typically doesn’t show any signs, which is why it’s known as a silent threat to your heart.

People who have had a Heart Attack or Stroke are at higher risk of future Cardiovascular problems, which is why it’s important to monitor your Cholesterol regularly to help prevent future events.

It’s also important to know High LDL Cholesterol can be genetic, meaning someone who eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly can still have High Cholesterol.

That’s why the American Heart Association’s “Lower Your LDL Cholesterol Now” Initiative, nationally sponsored by Amgen, emphasizes the importance of regular Cholesterol checks regardless of your weight, diet and physical activity levels. Knowing your LDL Cholesterol number - and understanding the target levels based on your health history - gives you the opportunity to manage your health proactively. This enables you to make informed decisions to prevent future heart issues.

Know Your Number

You can reduce your risk of a Heart Attack or Stroke by knowing and addressing your LDL Cholesterol number.

Working closely with your doctor allows you to actively manage High LDL Cholesterol - often a key risk factor you can help control - and together, you can develop a personalized treatment plan. Ask your doctor or health care provider for a Cholesterol Test to know your LDL number. Understanding your Cholesterol number is the first step toward managing it effectively. If necessary, appropriate management of your LDL Cholesterol can help reduce your risk of a Heart Attack or Stroke.

Your doctor may also talk with you about your personal and family medical history; previous heart-related medical events such as a Heart Attack or Stroke; lifestyle habits such as Tobacco use, Obesity, unhealthy living or aging; racial and ethnic backgrounds; and reproductive health.

Lower is Better

When it comes to your Cholesterol, guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend “lower is better” to reduce your risk. Studies show that an LDL number of below 100 mg/dL is ideal for healthy adults.

If you have a history of Heart Attack or Stroke and are already on a Cholesterol-lowering medication, your doc-

tor may aim for your LDL to be 70 mg/dL or lower. Talk to your doctor about the right treatment plan for you. Positive lifestyle habits, such as exercising and eating a healthy diet, may also help. However, if you’ve had a Heart Attack or Stroke before, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough to lower your risk of another event. Your doctor may recommend Cholesterol-lowering medications to protect your heart health.

Gold Coast Jazz Announces 2025 Scholarship Award Recipients

Gold Coast Jazz is pleased to announce that this summer and for the upcoming school year, they will distribute $72,000 in scholarship awards. Thirty students have been recommended to receive a scholarship from this year’s Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship Competition, held on April 12, 2025. Students who submitted applications were selected to perform in a live audition before a panel of judges. Scholarships are applicable for jazz camp tuition expenses for eligible high school students and for college tuition expenses for those students majoring in jazz.

Beginning in 2003 and due to the generosity of Jeanette Russell, the Gold Coast Jazz Society established a program to provide scholarship support to students wishing to further their musical studies in jazz. 2025 marks the 22nd year of this exceptional program, one of the larger jazz scholarship programs provided by a non-profit jazz organization.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the iconic film, Back to the Future, with “Back to the Future in Concert,” as part of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Imagination Series, on Thursday, July 3rd at 7:30 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater. Audiences will want to recharge the flux capacitor before celebrating this blockbuster smash hit. The 1.21-gigawatt blockbuster topped the 1985 box office chart, spawned two wildly successful sequels and stamped an enduring imprint on pop culture. Marty McFly, Doc Brown and a time-traveling DeLorean come together for the adventure of a lifetime as they travel to the past, present and future, setting off a time-shattering chain reaction that disrupts the space-time continuum. Fans old and new will experience the thrill of “Back to the Future” like never before, this time on a hi-def screen, accompanied by the South Florida Symphony Orchestra performing award-winning composer Alan Silvestri’s dazzling musical score live in sync with the film. Audiences will enjoy an exclusive treat with nearly 20 minutes of brand-new music added by Silvestri to the film’s score. Guests are encouraged to arrive at the venue early to party like it’s 1985, with a real DeLorean photo op, classic 80’s arcade games and a rad soundtrack of the decade’s greatest hits before the orchestra takes the stage. It’s a pre-show blast from the past that audiences won’t want to miss.

In a powerhouse night of pop, freestyle and dance hits, Taylor Dayne & Lisa Lisa appear live in concert at the Broward Center’s Au-Rene Theater on Saturday, August 2nd at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Baptist Health Red Carpet Series. An American pop icon with a career spanning three decades, Dayne’s groundbreaking debut single, “Tell It To My Heart,” turned her into an overnight international star in 1987. She followed the smash hit with 17 Top 20 singles over the course of her three-decade career, including “Love Will Lead You Back,” “Prove Your Love” and “I’ll Always Love You.” Dayne has sold more than 75 million albums and singles worldwide, earned three Grammy® nominations, an American Music Award, multiple New York Music Awards, received New York Music Hall of Fame honors and ranked as the number 18 female dance artist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. Lisa Lisa’s wide-ranging body of work as a naturally versatile singer, one who paved the way for fellow Latina American stars such as Selena and Jennifer Lopez, is highlighted by Freestyle, Dance-Pop and Salsa floor fillers along with impassioned adult contemporary ballads. She broke through with partners Cult Jam and the production team Full Force in 1985. Their effervescent “I Wonder if I Take You Home,” the first of five gold hits they scored together, led to the platinum success of “Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force,” their full-length debut. Having cracked the Pop Top 40, Lisa Lisa scaled higher with that album’s Top Ten final single, “All Cried Out,” and topped the chart in 1987 with “Head to Toe” and “Lost in Emotion,” the first two singles from her second album, “Spanish Fly.” A pre-concert party in the Horvitz Lobby invites audiences to dress up and have some fun, with DJ Johnny Quest playing legendary classics. spent in quiet awe, on cliffside trails or tucked away on Hanalei Bay.

#3 Delray Beach, Florida

This South Florida favorite blends easy beach living with a creative buzz. In third place, it’s ideal for those who want sun shine, yes, but also a bit of stimulation — art galleries, live music, and that walkable charm of Pineapple Grove.

#4 Big Sur, California

You don’t come to Big Sur to be busy. You come to listen to the ocean, to the wind through the redwoods, to your thoughts. For many, it’s the perfect place to clear mental clutter and just be.

#5 Paia, Hawaii

This Maui gem is a mix of surf town and soulful retreat. It’s colorful, artistic, and unpretentious. Many respondents saw Paia as a place to create, journal, or simply exist without a schedule.

Five other locations in Florida were named among the best in the country to micro-retire in:

#6 Jupiter

In Jupiter, micro-retirees can enjoy pristine beaches, scenic waterways, and a strong outdoor spirit. Kayaking the Loxahatchee River, visiting the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, and basking in the town’s easygoing nature become part of daily life.

#7 St. Augustine

noons on Park Avenue foster a daily rhythm of beauty and ease.

#22 Mount Dora

St. Augustine’s cobblestone streets, ocean breezes, and centuries-old charm create a soulful atmosphere for microretirement. Wandering through historic districts, exploring Castillo de San Marcos, and savoring café life offer a pace rooted in tradition and tranquility.

#11 Vero Beach

Vero Beach’s quiet shores, artistic community, and welcoming spirit offer a nurturing environment for micro-retirees. Days are filled with beachside reflection at South Beach Park, gallery visits at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and relaxed coastal living.

#21 Winter Park

Winter Park’s lakes, botanical gardens, and elegant downtown provide microretirees a harmonious lifestyle. Meandering through Mead Botanical Garden, enjoying museums, and leisurely after-

Mount Dora’s vintage charm and lakeside serenity create a peaceful retreat for micro-retirees. Strolling the historic downtown, taking relaxing boat tours on Lake Dora, and enjoying the town’s many festivals provide an inviting, slow-paced rhythm.

What People Want From Their Time Off

The survey also explored what people would prioritize during a micro-retirement, and the results show it’s not just about hammocks and hikes. For many, this time is deeply purposeful:

• 26% said their top goal would be travel and exploration, while

• 23% cited health and wellness, and

• 21% simply want rest and recovery.

• Other responses included learning new skills (12%), creative projects like writing or art (7%), volunteering (6%), and starting a business or passion project (5%).

Others saw it as a chance to grow or give back - 12% wanted to learn some-

thing new, 7% were eager to dive into creative projects, and a smaller group (6%) said they’d volunteer. Just 5% were looking to start a business or pursue a long-held passion project.

How Long Would They Step Away?

Turns out, people aren’t thinking small. Only 16% said they’d opt for a break under a month. Most envisioned something more substantial: nearly a quarter would take 1-3 months, another 24% would stretch it to 4-6 months, and, notably, 24% said they’d step away for a year or more if they could. This isn’t about squeezing in a breather - it’s about real time to reset.

What’s Holding People Back

Of course, it’s not all daydreams and open calendars. The biggest obstacle by far is money. Half of the respondents said financial stability is the main thing stopping them. Losing health coverage was another major concern (17%), along with fears of career damage from resume gaps (10%) or losing purpose and daily structure (10%). And while we often romanticize a solo break, 9% admitted they’d

worry about feeling isolated during such a stretch.

How Would They Pay for It?

• 55% say they’d rely on personal savings.

• 19% would take on freelance or part-time work during their time off.

• Others mentioned family support (11%), severance packages (8%), or employer-funded sabbaticals (7%).

Will They Do It?

The idea is gaining traction, but not everyone’s ready to jump. Just under one in five (19%) say they’re very likely to take a micro-retirement in the next five years, with another 18% saying it’s somewhat likely. A quarter of people are on the fence. And 29% say it’s very unlikely, citing, once again, the realities of income, insurance, and job security.

“Micro-retirement isn’t about quitting. It’s about taking the space to reimagine what life could look like - before burnout forces the issue. These cities reflect what people are yearning for: peace, beauty, and time that feels well-spent,” says Raymond Lee, President of Careerminds. (Credit: Careerminds)

Big Upgrades For Small Spaces

Renovate Your Bathroom For Style And Function

Home renovations happen for a variety of reasons - whether to reflect personal style preferences, replace worn out materials or adapt to a family’s evolving functional needs. Among the most popular upgrades homeowners tackle, bathroom renovations can be a smart and worthwhile investment.

Updating a bathroom, even a small one, requires careful planning to ensure both aesthetic appeal and long-term functionality. To maximize the value of your investment, focus on a design that is timeless and products that offer a blend of beauty, comfort and performance.

“As a designer and renovator, I know firsthand the impact fixtures can have on a home,” said Keith Bynum, home renovation expert, designer and HGTV star. “American Standard has been my go-to for renovation projects because their products are built to last, beautiful and timeless. The brand’s approach aligns with my own - creating stylish, convenient spaces with high-quality products that cater to real-life needs and improve the way we live.”

Discover these expert tips for selecting the perfect products for your bathroom upgrade from American Standard, a trusted leader in bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures that is celebrating 150 years of designing innovative products that are truly “built for life.”

Sinks Your sink should not only enhance the visual appeal of your bathroom but also meet your practical, everyday needs. Striking the right balance between aesthetics and practicality is essential when choosing the perfect sink for your space. If you’ve never shopped for a sink before, you may not realize how many styles there are to choose from.

An undermount sink sits with its edge below the level of the countertop, creating a seamless surface that makes it easier to clean while hiding from view. A drop-in sink is placed into an opening with the rim creating a lip that forms a barrier between your sink and counter. A vessel sink resembles a standalone basin, often used as a decorative and contemporary alternative to traditional sinks in powder rooms. The sleek and clean design of a pedestal sink makes it a perfect solution for smaller spaces, although additional storage may be needed.

Once you decide on the sink, you’ll also need to determine what furniture to pair with it. Some popular options to complete the look and enhance usability include a console, vanity top, floating vanity or washstand.

Toilets When considering a toilet, performance is essential. It should meet your everyday needs, operate efficiently and provide additional features that make daily maintenance easier.

You’ll find most toilets on the market fall into one of three categories: onepiece, two-piece or smart. One-piece toilets have a seamless design, with the tank

and bowl fused together for a look that is sleek and easier to clean. Two-piece toilets consist of a separate tank and bowl, making them a popular choice for easy installation and maintenance. Smart toilets offer advanced features like bidet functions, automatic flushing, self-cleaning capabilities and customizable settings designed to enhance user comfort, hygiene and convenience.

Another important consideration is your toilet’s shape and height. Elongated bowls provide added comfort while round bowls are a space-saving solution for smaller bathrooms. When it comes to height, standard toilets are suitable for most people, but higher toilets allow for easier standing and sitting accessibility.

An option like American Standard’s line of Champion toilets, engineered to never clog and powerful enough to flush a bucket of golf balls in a single flush, provide cleaner, more efficient flushes so nothing disrupts your daily routine. These DIY-friendly, low-flow toilets use just 1.28 gallons per flush to conserve water. They also feature PowerWash rim technology, which scrubs the bowl with every flush, and unique EverClean Antimicrobial Surface protection to guard against mold, mildew and odor- and stain-causing bacteria.

Faucets

Bathroom faucets come in a variety of

styles and configurations to suit any design preference. Durable finishes resist tarnishing and scratches, keeping your faucet looking new for years to come. Many models also feature ceramic disc valves for silky-smooth handle operation and water-saving technology to help conserve resources and lower water bills.

A variety of bathroom faucet configurations can meet your bathroom design needs. Designed for sinks with a singlehole or four-inch escutcheon, the monoblock faucet provides easy use with a single-handle design for controlling water volume and temperature. Sinks with three faucet holes spaced four inches apart pair well with a centerset design, providing a compact and space-efficient solution ideal for undermount bathroom sink installations. If your sink holes are spaced 8-16 inches apart, a widespread design will coordinate well with undermount and vessel style sinks that feature a deck, offering both style and practicality. The vessel faucet is designed for above-counter or vessel sinks, delivering a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that enhances modern bathrooms.

Bathtubs

Whether used for daily hygiene or as a relaxing retreat, the bathtub is a focal point of bathroom design. From classic alcove and elegant freestanding tubs to convenient walk-in options, each type caters to different needs and aesthetics.

The secret is determining how you’ll use the tub so you can maximize the features and functionality while complementing your overall design.

You can expect to find a range of features, including ADA Compliance for enhanced accessibility, deep soak capabilities for a luxurious bathing experience and slip-resistant surfaces for added safety. The trim and faucets also play a crucial role in your tub’s overall look and performance. For families, one practical choice is the Aspirations Waterfall Tub Spout from American Standard, which is designed with rounded edges for kid-friendly safety while creating a soothing, spa-like cascade. It also conveniently doubles as a storage shelf or leg rest for shaving.

Clever Canine Finds New Career

Black Lab Sniffs out Mold More Effectively Than Traditional Inspection Methods

Photo Courtesy of: Mold Hunt, LLC

Dogs are considered “man’s best friend,” but Indy, a one-year-old black Labrador Retriever, had doubts that he would ever find his fur-ever purpose. The canine was quickly returned to his Colorado breeder after his original owners couldn’t make the commitment required for an active working breed, like Indy. Luckily, at the same time, Zaneta Kuzel, a female entrepreneur in Hobe Sound, Florida, was seeking a black lab for her new business venture- a canine mold detection company. The two met and Mold Hunt, LLC was formed in March 2025. The innovative company uses Indy’s talents to detect mold more effectively and affordably in homes, businesses, boats and cars throughout Southeastern Florida.

“Black labs are notorious for their keen sense of smell and calm temperament, and that’s exactly how we found Indy - full of potential and waiting for his right purpose and home,” said Zaneta Kuzel, Founder and Owner of Mold Hunt, LLC. “Indy is energetic and focused about his work, passionate around people and always eager to earn treats for a job well done.”

Kuzel’s impetus for creating the new business stems from her own personal health crisis with mold in 2024. After having a full home inspection before purchasing her 30-year-old house in Hobe Sound, FL, Kuzel was excited to start her new life. Within two weeks of moving in, Kuzel began to notice difficulty breathing and frequent coughing. As her condition worsened, she went to the ER, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, which lasted a month. She discovered that hidden mold was lurking behind the walls in every room of her house.

and in Europe dogs have been used for this purpose for over twenty years. After researching canine services in America, the idea stuck to bring this revolutionary offering to Southeastern Florida. “When we met Indy, everything aligned: his unique capabilities, my personal experience, and our underlying mission to keep people healthy, especially in our moist, humid tropical climate.”

Kuzel explains that Indy was rigorously trained and successfully completed an

thorough walkthrough of the property both inside and outside. Kuzel then gathers information about the client’s potential mold-related issues, noting any health changes in different rooms. Indy is then brought into the house to lead the inspection, sniffing out mold behind walls, in air ducts, under floors and other areas invisible to the human eye. When mold is detected, Indy alerts Kuzel by sitting down and pointing to the exact source of mold with his nose. Once the alert is con-

specific areas affected by the mold, unnecessary and costly repairs are prevented. Precise detection means spending less on invasive testing and remediation. For schools, hotels, commercial and government buildings, the affordability factor is very substantial.

Experienced Professionals: The unique combination of highly trained dogs with expert handlers who have a deep knowledge of mold issues, offers the most comprehensive screening possible.

“Being this sick was shocking since I have a healthy, organic lifestyle and took all of the necessary precautions by getting a proper home inspection,” said Kuzel. “I realized how invisible and dangerous mold can be and knew that there had to be a better way to detect it and help others avoid what I went through.”

During her recovery Kuzel discovered that dogs could be trained to detect mold

intensive, three-month mold detection certification program through the renowned Florida Training Academy, which taught him how to sniff out all forms of mold, including Aspergillis (blue-green), Cladosporium (olive green) and the toxic Stachybotrys (black mold), and provide visual cues to let Kuzel know the exact location of the infestation. He is one of only a handful of highly specialized mold dogs in the U.S.

The Mold Hunt detection process lasts approximately one hour and consists of a

firmed, he receives a food reward and praise. The entire process is quick and more than 90% accurate.

Other benefits of canine mold detection include:

Non-Destructive: Unlike traditional methods that may require drilling or removing parts of one’s property, dogs find mold without any invasive techniques, preserving the integrity of a person’s home, business, car or boat.

Cost-Savings: By targeting only those

Health-Focused: Mold can seriously affect one’s health, causing headaches, tightening in the chest, burning sensations in the airways, wheezing, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, nose bleeds, skin irritation, sinusitis, shingles, streptococcus and pneumonia, among many other illnesses. Mold Hunt helps catch mold problems early, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for individuals, families and companies.

“It’s important to note that mold is not harmful to dogs since they do not inhale the dangerous particles like humans can,” adds Kuzel. “Their noses are truly cutting-edge technology!”

Indy typically conducts up to four mold detections per day with ongoing training by Kuzel. When off-duty, he enjoys swimming, playing fetch at the beach, and napping in his favorite spot at home. He’s not just a working dog, but also a cherished family member. Parties interested in the service can visit: www.moldhunt.com or call: 858-MOLD-DOG.

“We’re so excited to showcase Indy’s special training and talents to help Southern Floridians stay safe from mold,” concludes Kuzel. “We’re planning to expand our detection team with additional trained dogs and handlers to offer service throughout the entire state and eventually create educational workshops to help homeowners truly understand the health risks associated with mold.”

The Importance of Memory Care Communities

As we age, the need for specialized care becomes increasingly important. For those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of Dementia, in-home care may not be the ideal solution. While many seniors express a desire to remain in their homes as long as possible—according to a survey by AARP, over 95% of seniors share this sentiment—the reality is that managing the needs of a loved one with cognitive challenges can be overwhelming.

This is where memory care communities like The Sterling Aventura shine. Unlike traditional in-home care, which can be difficult to navigate for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other Dementias, The Sterling Aventura offers an environment designed to meet the unique needs of these residents. With around-the-clock staffing, personalized care programs, and a safe, secure environment, residents receive the specialized attention they require to lead a fulfilling life.

For families considering care options for loved ones, the decision between inhome care and memory care can be daunting. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each choice, and The Sterling Aventura provides a compelling case for community living.

Cost: While the average cost of 24/7 in-home care can range from $8,000 to $12,000 per month, depending on the level of care required, these expenses do not include the additional costs of homeownership or renting, such as taxes, utilities, and upkeep. In contrast, monthly costs at The Sterling Aventura range from $3,900 (for assisted Living) and from $5750 for (Memory care).

Socialization & Activities: At home, seniors can often feel isolated, particularly if family members are unable to provide constant companionship. In a community setting like The Sterling Aventura, residents enjoy numerous opportunities to engage with others. The community features a large, open-concept dining room, kitchen, and living areas designed to foster interaction. There is also an arts and crafts studio, where residents can explore their creative side, as well as a full lineup of social, educational, and recreational activities tailored to their interests.

Dining & Nutrition: One of the most significant advantages of life at The Sterling Aventura is the dining experience. While in-home care often involves pre-packaged meals or eating alone, The Sterling Aventura offers residents a family-style dining experience where they can enjoy freshly prepared, nutritious meals. The community’s gourmet chef works with locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that not only satisfy the palate but also provide essential nutrients that support overall well-being.

Staffing & Secured Setting: In-home care requires constant oversight from family members to ensure caregivers are qualified and show up as scheduled. This can lead to anxiety about the quality of care and whether help will be available in an emergency. At The Sterling Aventura, residents are supported by an on-site team of skilled memory caregivers and a nurse available 24/7. In the intimate memory care neighborhoods, residents are cared for in a secured environment where they feel safe, valued, and understood.

A Memory Care Program

That Makes a Difference

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of Dementia, The Sterling Aventura offers the Heartfelt CONNECTIONS memory care program. This specialized program promotes physical and emotional well-being while supporting daily functioning and maintaining a sense of dignity and purpose. The program is

designed to foster connections - between residents, staff, and the community - helping each individual find joy in even the smallest moments. The Heartfelt CONNECTIONS program is more than just care - it’s a philosophy of compassion that emphasizes the importance of emotional support, sensory engagement, and social interaction. By

focusing on the person rather than just their condition, this program helps individuals maintain a high quality of life, no matter where they are on their journey.

If you or a loved one are considering assisted living or memory care, The Sterling Aventura invites you to experience all that it has to offer. The team is available to answer questions, provide fur-

The Algocracy Agenda:

How AI And the Deep State Are Digitizing Tyranny

“If one company or small group of people manages to develop godlike digital superintelligence, they could take over the world. At least when there’s an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there would be no death. It would live forever. And then you’d have an immortal dictator from which we can never escape.” — Elon Musk

The Deep State is not going away. It’s just being replaced.

Replaced not by a charismatic autocrat or even a shadowy bureaucracy, but by artificial intelligence (AI)—unfeeling, unaccountable, and immortal.

As we stand on the brink of a new technological order, the machinery of power is quietly shifting into the hands of algorithms.

Under Donald Trump’s watch, that shift is being locked in for at least a generation.

Trump’s latest legislative initiative - a 10-year ban on AI regulation buried within the “One Big Beautiful Bill” - strips state and local governments of the ability to impose any guardrails on artificial intelligence until 2035.

Despite bipartisan warnings from 40 state attorneys general, the bill passed the House and awaits Senate approval. It is nothing less than a federal green light for AI to operate without oversight in every sphere of life, from law enforcement and employment to healthcare, education, and digital surveillance.

This is not innovation.

This is institutionalized automation of tyranny.

This is how, within a state of algorithmic governance, code quickly replaces constitutional law as the mechanism for control.

We are rapidly moving from a society ruled by laws and due process to one ruled by software.

Algorithmic governance refers to the use of machine learning and automated decision-making systems to carry out functions once reserved for human beings: policing, welfare eligibility, immigration vetting, job recruitment, credit scoring, and judicial risk assessments.

In this regime, the law is no longer interpreted. It is executed. Automatically. Mechanically. Without room for appeal, discretion, or human mercy.

These AI systems rely on historical data—data riddled with systemic bias and human error—to make predictions and trigger decisions. Predictive policing algorithms tell officers where to patrol and whom to stop. Facial recognition technology flags “suspects” based on photos scraped from Social Media. Risk assessment software assigns threat scores to citizens with no explanation, no oversight, and no redress.

These algorithms operate in black boxes, shielded by trade secrets and protected by national security exemptions. The public cannot inspect them. Courts cannot challenge them. Citizens cannot escape them.

The result? A population sorted, scored, and surveilled by machinery.

This is the practical result of the Trump

Save A Life From Stroke

Strokes can happen to anyone, at any age - even young people. Despite being one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States, Strokes are largely preventable, treatable and beatable - if you can control your risk factors.

According to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a Stroke. Keeping Blood Pressure in check, living a healthy lifestyle and knowing Stroke warning signs may help protect you and your loved ones.

Here are key insights from the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke Initiative, nationally supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation.

Controlling Risk Factors

Up to 80% of Strokes may be preventable, according to the American Stroke Association. You can take action to prevent Strokes by managing your risk factors, like High Blood Pressure, a leading cause and controllable risk factor for Stroke and Heart Disease.

Other risk factors include Diabetes and Obesity, which can be kept in check with healthy lifestyle behaviors such as good nutrition. Quitting smoking and being physically active are important. Atrial

administration’s deregulation agenda: AI systems given carte blanche to surveil, categorize, and criminalize the public without transparency or recourse.

And these aren’t theoretical dangers— they’re already happening.

Examples of unchecked AI and predictive policing show that precrime is already here.

Once you are scored and flagged by a machine, the outcome can be lifealtering—as it was for Michael Williams, a 65-year-old man who spent nearly a year in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Williams was behind the wheel when a passing car fired at his vehicle, killing his 25-year-old passenger, who had hitched a ride.

Despite no motive, no weapon, and no eyewitnesses, police charged Williams based on an AI-powered gunshot detection program called ShotSpotter. The system picked up a loud bang near the area and triangulated it to Williams’ vehicle. The charge was ultimately dropped for lack of evidence.

This is precrime in action. A prediction, not proof. An algorithm, not an eyewitness.

Programs like ShotSpotter are notorious for misclassifying noises like fireworks and construction as gunfire. Employees have even manually altered data to fit police narratives. And yet these systems are being combined with predictive policing software to generate risk maps, target individuals, and justify surveillance—all without transparency or accountability.

It doesn’t stop there.

AI is now flagging families for potential child neglect based on predictive models that pull data from Medicaid, mental health, jail, and housing records. These models disproportionately target poor and minority families. The algorithm assigns risk scores from 1 to 20. Families and their attorneys are never told what the scores are, or that they were used.

Imagine losing your child to the foster system because a secret algorithm said you might be a risk.

This is how AI redefines guilt.

The Trump administration’s approach to AI regulation reveals a deeper plan to deregulate democracy itself.

Rather than curbing these abuses, the Trump administration is accelerating them.

An executive order titled “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,” signed by President Trump in early 2025, revoked prior AI safeguards, eliminated bias audits, and instructed agencies to prioritize “innovation” over ethics. The order encourages every federal agency to adopt AI quickly, especially in areas like policing and surveillance.

Under the guise of “efficiency,” constitutional protections are being erased.

Trump’s 10-year moratorium on AI regulation is the logical next step. It dismantles the last line of defense—statelevel resistance—and ensures a uniform national policy of algorithmic dominance.

The result is a system in which the government no longer governs. It processes.

The federal government’s AI expansion is building a surveillance state that no human authority can restrain.

Welcome to Surveillance State 2.0, the Immortal Machine.

Over 1700 uses of AI have already been reported across federal agencies, with hundreds directly impacting safety and rights. Many agencies, including the Departments of Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, and Health and Human Services, are deploying AI for decisionmaking without public input or oversight.

This is what the technocrats call an “algocracy”—rule by algorithm.

In an algocracy, unelected developers and corporate contractors hold more power over your life than elected officials.

Your health, freedom, mobility, and privacy are subject to automated scoring systems you can’t see and can’t appeal to.

And unlike even the most entrenched human dictators, these systems do not die. They do not forget. They are not swayed by mercy or reason. They do not stand for re-election.

They persist.

When AI governs by prediction, due process disappears in a haze of machine logic.

The most chilling effect of this digital regime is the death of due process.

What court can you appeal to when an algorithm has labeled you a danger? What lawyer can cross-examine a predictive model? What jury can weigh the reasoning of a neural net trained on flawed data?

You are guilty because the machine says so. And the machine is never wrong.

When due process dissolves into data processing, the burden of proof flips. The presumption of innocence evaporates. Citizens are forced to prove they are not threats, not risks, not enemies.

And most of the time, they don’t even know they’ve been flagged.

This erosion of due process is not just a legal failure—it is a philosophical one, reducing individuals to data points in systems that no longer recognize their humanity.

Writer and visionary Rod Serling warned of this very outcome more than half a century ago: a world where technology, masquerading as progress under the guise of order and logic, becomes the instrument of tyranny.

That future is no longer fiction. What Serling imagined is now reality.

The time to resist is now, before freedom becomes obsolete.

To those who call the shots in the halls of government, “we the people” are merely the means to an end.

“We the people”—who think, who reason, who take a stand, who resist, who demand to be treated with dignity and care, who believe in freedom and justice for all—have become obsolete, undervalued citizens of a totalitarian state that, in the words of Serling, “has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the

destruction of human freedom.”

In this sense, we are all Romney Wordsworth, the condemned man in Serling’s Twilight Zone episode “The Obsolete Man.”

“The Obsolete Man,” a story arc about the erasure of individual worth by a mechanized state, underscores the danger of rendering humans irrelevant in a system of cold automation and speaks to the dangers of a government that views people as expendable once they have outgrown their usefulness to the State. Yet—and here’s the kicker—this is where the government through its monstrous inhumanity also becomes obsolete.

As Serling noted in his original script for “The Obsolete Man,” “Any state, any entity, any ideology which fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete.”

Like Serling’s totalitarian state, our future will be defined by whether we conform to a dehumanizing machine order— or fight back before the immortal dictator becomes absolute.

We now face a fork in the road: resist the rise of the immortal dictator or submit to the reign of the machine.

This is not a battle against technology, but a battle against the unchecked, unregulated, and undemocratic use of technology to control people.

We must demand algorithmic transparency, data ownership rights, and legal recourse against automated decisions. We need a Digital Bill of Rights that guarantees:

• The right to know how algorithms affect us.

• The right to challenge and appeal automated decisions.

• The right to privacy and data security.

• The right to be free from automated surveillance and predictive policing.

• The right to be forgotten.

Otherwise, AI becomes the ultimate enforcer of a surveillance state from which there is no escape.

As Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, warned: “We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about. Your digital identity will live forever... because there’s no delete button.”

An immortal dictator, indeed. Let us be clear: the threat is not just to our privacy, but to democracy itself. As I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the time to fight back is now—before the code becomes law, and freedom becomes a memory.

Fibrillation, or AFib, which is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, also increases Stroke risk. In fact, people with AFib are five times more likely to have a Stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

Preventing a Second Stroke

Nearly 1 in 4 Strokes occur in people who had a previous Stroke, sometimes because they don’t know what caused the first, making identifying the cause of the Stroke a key step toward future prevention. Treatment depends on the type of Stroke someone is having, which can be determined with a series of medical evaluations and tests. Work with your health care professional to develop a plan that helps you move forward after a first Stroke while preventing a second. This plan should include controlling risk factors, like achieving and maintaining healthy Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Cholesterol Levels. “Preventing a second

Stroke is possible with the right approach,” said Teresita Casanova, MD, HCA Healthcare Affiliated Neurologist and American Stroke Association Volunteer Expert. “Taking medicines as prescribed, monitoring health numbers, and making small, consistent lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Stroke survivors should feel empowered to take control of their health and work with their care team to build a strong prevention plan.” To help you in your journey, you can rely on tools such as the Heart & Stroke Helper, a free self-management app available for Stroke survivors and their caregivers. The app allows patients to oversee their health in one place with features that track progress on lifestyle habits, manage medications, track health numbers, provide information about Stroke and allow patients to connect with others for inspiration.

Act F.A.S.T.: How to Detect Signs of Stroke Most adults in the U.S. don’t know the Stroke warning signs, nor that Stroke is largely treatable if you call 911 as soon as you recognize the symptoms. Learning the acronym F.A.S.T. can help you recognize that someone may be having Stroke symptoms so you can take lifesaving action.

F: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven? A: Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S: Speech. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.”

T: Time to Call 911. If you or anyone else shows any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Hallandale Beach State Of The City Part 1

This week, I will present the State of the City address, and I will be sharing this with you over the next upcoming weeks. It was such an honor and privilege to partake in the annual State of the City presented by the Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce. It is truly an honor to be your Mayor in Hallandale Beach. A Special Thank you to Executive Director Norma English, and the entire Board of Directors for your hard, yearround, work helping businesses here. You are genuinely appreciated.

A special thank you to our partners here at Gulfstream Park for the beautiful venue. I also want to thank all of the sponsors for the luncheon; Amsterdam Hallandale, City of Hallandale Beach, Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Inc., American Family Care, Memorial Healthcare System, Signarama, Angels On The Ocean HomeCare, LLC., and David iPhoto Professional Photo & Video. Without their generous support and

partnership, this wonderful event would not be possible.

Those of you that have been following past State of the City’s you know I like to share a bit of my global view of current events. Everything that happens does end up impacting us locally. Which is plenty!

Since 2020, we have been on the mend and a gradual road to recovery. The roller coaster ride of two horrific wars and the global economy with major supply chain issues and cost of south Florida living sky rocketed.

Keeping up to date with what is really going on has been daunting, listening to CNN, Fox News, Fox, MSNBC and BBC just to understand everyone’s views. Then hitting the internet to research. Now the saying should be “Do Not Trust- Verify.”

Facts really matter especially when forty thousand people, local businesses, and visitors are dependent on your leadership. Even with all this unrest I like to say, we are the government that provides vital life services. The federal and

state government are not worried about keeping your water running, or toilets flushing.

Our strategic plan was bold. We stuck to it and made tough political decisions which led to a path of stability. If you recall my theme last year, Promises Made

Promise Kept. Cities were finally seeing our tax dollars coming back. This year my motto is “Dig Baby, Dig!” And I do not mean for oil.

As a side note, we heard drilling permits were being issued once again. Luckily for us, they will not be digging off our coast. Southeast Florida was off the table during Trump’s first term, and we found out last week the same will hold true.

Supply chains had started to free up which meant projects were moving. Even with the cost of construction material going up we can continue with our goals.

Dig Baby Dig!

2024 was an election year. People were hurting when it came to our economy. It

was a few months ago eggs peaked at $8.17 per dozen and now the average is $4.38 a dozen. In 2020, they were $1.48. Inflation continued wars in Ukraine, Israel, unrest in Africa. Crime in the U.S. was on the rise. National crime statistics show a downward trend in violent crime. The same goes for our city. Thank you to our Chief

and for the

leadership of the

Commission. We are here due to a unified commitment to

oath to keep our City safe! In this case Crime = Quality of life issues. The ones that create a sense of lawlessness. Homelessness, drug addiction and petty crimes that often

Girl Scouts Of Southeast Florida Unite

To Fight Hunger With Feeding Florida Together Service Project

Throughout the month of April, Girl Scouts came together to tackle food insecurity through the annual Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida’s council-wide community service project, Feeding Florida Together. More than 900 Girl Scouts and their troops contributed 350 volunteer hours to local food banks and hunger relief organizations. At the same time, they donated more than 10,000 pounds of nonperishable food items, enough for nearly 8,500 meals. Girl Scouts collected essential shelfstable food and pantry staples including peanut butter, pasta, rice, canned fruits,

vegetables and more. These donations were distributed across several counties, including Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee, to the Broward Outreach Center, House of Hope, Mustard Seed Ministry, multiple CROS Ministries pantries and more.

“Feeding Florida Together is more than a food drive, it’s an opportunity for our girls to become changemakers and really make a difference in local communities,” said Lisa Johnson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. “They see firsthand the impact they can make in their communities by working together to fight hunger

and food insecurity.”

According to Feeding Florida, 2.9 million Floridians lack proper food access, more than 800,000 of those are children and more than 2.9 million Floridians struggle to afford nutritious food.
