A“Rainof Blessings”
An Innovative Dining Concept from A Talented Israeli-Born Chef
Mutra – named for Executive Chef/Owner Raz Shabtai’s beloved grandmother and his culinary inspiration – is now open for limited reservations at 2188 Northeast 123rd Street, Miami, Florida 33181. Mutra, which translates to “rain of blessings,” is an innovative dining concept from the talented Israeli-born chef featuring a menu that defies easy categorization but will tempt and intrigue palates with every bite. Featuring a farm-to-table ethos based on the chef’s reverence for local farmers and purveyors, Shabtai draws from great culinary traditions from around the globe, many of which can be found in his hometown of Jerusalem. One of the world’s true melting pots, Israel is also home to the flavors and traditions these immigrants brought with them – an eclectic hub for the spices, indigenous ingredients and Old World recipes. To that end, it’s no surprise that when pressed to be asked to define his cuisine, Chef Shabtai credits Levantine, Galilean/North Israel and Baladi

influences.
Shabtai, whose mantra for Mutra is “food is holy,” is excited to bring these diverse flavors to Miami and add a twist to beloved dishes for savvy diners hungry for something different. Says the chef, “For Mutra, we’re taking the traditional dishes that we grew up on, food that my grandmother made and we ate as kids and making

something new from it. For example, my grandmother grew up in Tunisia, where fricassee was a very popular sandwich, served on fried bread like a donut and stuffed with harissa, lemon, potatoes, tuna from the can, cooked carrots and chopped salad. What we will do at Mutra is honor the past but cook forward, if you like. For my version of this dish, I sub in the fresh catch of the
day, as we work with local fishermen and will use special techniques to elevate it.”
Currently, Mutra is open nightly Sunday through Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and until 11:00 p.m. on Thursdays.

Keller’sKorner:Jews In Hockey
By Neil Keller
Welcome to Keller’s Korner. For over 100 years, Jewish people have been involved with the National Hockey League (NHL). In 1923, the NHL handed out the Hart Memorial Trophy for the most valuable player for each season and the tradition continues to today. Cecil Hart was the coach and GM for the Montreal Canadiens and his father, David, donated the original trophy.
David and Cecil go back to the very first Jewish family with Aaron Hart that settled in Canada. It was in 1924 when Samuel Rothschild became the very first Jewish NHL skater. Ironically, Samuel’s family were the very first Jewish settlers in Sudbury, Ontario.
Over the years, Jewish people have played an important role in the NHL. Gary Bettman has been the NHL Commissioner since 1993. There have been Jewish NHL skaters over the years, but in the last two years the number of participants is at an alltime highest in numbers.
Among the top players is Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. Adam has been named to the All-Star team twice and won the Norris Trophy for best defenseman in the NHL.
Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers is an offensive machine. I expect Zach to pass Matt Schneider for the most goals by a Jewish player. Zach wears jersey #18 for “Chai.”
What would the NHL be without the three Hughes brothers Ellen Weinberg-Hughes is the proud mother of Jack, Luke and Quinn who are all playing in the NHL. Ellen is part of the very first American family to have all siblings to be drafted in the first round.
Jack Hughes is a star for the New Jersey Devils. At just 23 years old, he has already been named three times to the NHL AllStar team. He is younger than Zach Hyman and could easily become the all-time scoring leader for Jewish skaters.
Luke Hughes also plays for the New Jersey Devils. Just 21 years old, Luke was named to the All-Rookie team. The oldest sibling is Quinn at the age of 24 years old. He plays for the Vancouver Canucks. Just like his brother Jack, he is a scoring machine. He is the captain of the Canucks, was voted to the AllStar team last and won the Norris trophy.
Until recently, few fans knew that Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman was Jewish. That might be because he is from
Anchorage, Alaska but his father is Jewish and Jeremy had a Bar Mitzvah.
Other top players include Jakob Chychrun of the Washington Capitals. Jakob grew up in Boca Raton and has a Jewish mother. Other current players include Andre Burakovsky of the Seattle Kraken, Mark Friedman of the Vancouver Canucks, Jordan Harris of the Columbus Blue Jackets (he is Jewish and African American), Luke Kunin of the San Jose Sharks (by the way, the Sharks have a Jewish Head Coach named Ryan Warsofsky), Jason Zucker of the Buffalo Sabres, and Jake Walman of the San Jose Sharks.
We might see Cole Guttman get promoted back to the Chicago Blackhawks and Devon Levi return to the Buffalo Sabres. I predict that Zeev Buium, who is just 19 years old and his brother Shai, 21, will be playing in the NHL very soon. More coming to the ice.

FestivalFuture Amid Chaos And Anxiety, ‘Festival Of The Future’ To Focus On Utopian Future; Bringing Calm To The Present
By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil
Amid an atmosphere of war, sickness, and global financial uncertainty, local Chabad rabbis are leading a campaign to raise awareness of a little - known Jewish holiday, this year dubbed ‘Festival of the Future,’ focusing on bringing a message of hope for the future and serenity to the present.
The holiday of Passover — this year began at sundown on Saturday, April 12th, 2025 and ended on Sunday April 20th, 2025 — and its Seder nights are well known — and were observed throughout the great state of Florida with public Seders in almost every city and the distribution of Shmurah Matzah (the Rolls-Royce of matzah) — but the eighth and final day of Passover has its own focus: the utopian future of the Messianic era, when ‘nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.’ As the world reels from the devastating effects of conflict, Chabad rabbis throughout the state will lead their Jewish communities in celebrating the future era of peace.
During this time of upheaval, it’s crucial that we find ways to bring peace of mind into our lives. On the last day of Passover, our focus shifts from the past redemption of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt to the future redemption and the utopian Messianic era. While we eagerly await this era of global friendship and peace, we can bring its lessons into our lives today.
Synagogues everywhere will mark the day by reading the Haftorah and studying the Biblical vision of the Messianic Era, participate in interactive sessions guiding participants in finding ‘Oasis of Calm’ in the current climate. The last day of Passover (“Acharon Shel Pesach”) is particularly associated with Moshiach and the future redemption. The Haftarah (reading from the Prophets) for this day is from Isaiah 11, which describes the promised future era of universal peace and divine perfection. Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of partaking of a ‘Moshiach’s meal’ on the afternoon of the last day of Passover; in addition to the matzah eaten at ‘Moshiach’s meal,’ the Rebbes of Chabad added the custom of drinking four cups of wine, as in the seder held on Passover’s first days.
inspirational stories, singing Chassidic melodies and finding out why this day has a special energy related to the coming of Moshiach. There was a Yizkor Memorial service that Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and the festive inspirational meal at 6:30 p.m.

Local Chabad’s will cap off the day with Seudas Moshiach, a special holiday farewell meal. During this traditional and mystical feast scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, April 20th, 2025, community members focused on bringing the Messianic message of harmony into their own lives.
All were of course welcome to join us at Chabad Chayil as we closed out the Passover holiday together, enjoying wine, matzah and other Passover goodies, discussing words of Torah with
While our world is still very much an imperfect place, if we look beneath the surface, we can see that we are already on the path towards a more perfect world. Yes, there is still war between nations — but it is condemned by the vast majority of the globe, as peace is valued now more than ever. Yes, there is still illness, but modern medical advances are bringing hope to millions. On the last day of Passover, we will focus on finding the goodness that is already in the world, bringing the serenity and calm of the utopian future for which we hope into our lives today.

ANightOfHarmonyAndHeart: First Grand Am Israel Chai Symphonic Music Night
On the evening of Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale will come alive with more than just music — it will resonate with unity, pride, and the enduring spirit of the Jewish people. The First Grand Am Israel Chai Symphonic Music Night is set to be a cultural milestone, bringing together more than 2,500 people to honor Israel’s 77th Anniversary in a powerful expression of resilience and identity.
What sets this night apart is not only its scale but its soul. A 50-piece symphony orchestra, conducted by the internationally acclaimed Maestro Angel Mahler, will fill the concert hall with stirring compositions that celebrate the rich tapestry of Jewish and Israeli heritage. Mahler, known for his emotive interpretations and global collaborations, brings a depth of experience that ensures this will be more than a concert — it will be an unforgettable journey through sound and story.
This inaugural event is proudly supported by a broad coalition of community partners, including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the Consulates of Israel and Argentina, and the Cities of Aventura, Hollywood, Sunny Isles Beach, and Bal Harbour. Their participation, along with that of over 30 Jewish and proIsrael organizations and synagogues, underscores the collective
commitment to celebrating Jewish continuity, culture, and community at a time when such unity is more vital than ever.
“We are one. Am Israel Chai.” These words are the heartbeat of this event. In a world often marked by division, the Am Israel Chai Symphonic Night reminds us of the power of music to bridge generations, beliefs, and borders. The music program, while still under wraps, promises to feature classic and contemporary works that reflect the beauty, struggles, and triumphs of the Jewish experience. Expect emotional highs, moments of reflection, and an atmosphere charged with pride and hope.
The event also serves as a bridge between cultures. The support of the Argentine Consulate highlights the diverse backgrounds of many South Florida Jewish families and reflects the deep ties between Latin America and the Jewish diaspora. This multicultural spirit will be felt not only in the music but in the very fabric of the audience — a vibrant mosaic of identities and stories, all united by shared values and love for Israel.
For Milena Liascovitz, one of the event’s leading organizers, this night represents more than months of planning — it represents legacy. “This isn’t just about Israel’s 77th Anniversary It’s about celebrating who we are, where we come from, and where we’re going together,” she says. “Music has always been a
way our people carry memory, hope, and strength. On this night, we’ll raise our voices — through instruments, through song, and through the energy in the room — to say that Am Israel lives.”
Attendees can expect a meticulously curated program lasting from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., taking place in one of Florida’s premier cultural venues. Located at 201 Southwest 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts offers an elegant setting perfectly suited for the grandeur of the occasion.
More than a performance, the First Grand Am Israel Chai Symphonic Music Night is a celebration of continuity — a resounding declaration that in the face of challenges, the Jewish people remain united, resilient, and vibrant. As the final notes ring out and the audience rises in applause, they won’t just be responding to the orchestra — they’ll be echoing a shared truth, one carried across generations: We are one. Am Israel Chai.

Everything is made in-house in the scratch kitchen, with fresh ingredients sourced from local farms. Music is curated by Shabtai to match the cuisine, lending to an overall sensory experience. The dynamic and delectable menu is a glimpse into the chef’s creative and exuberant spirit featuring dishes such as Beet 3 Ways Salad with vegan tzatziki, pickled beets, grilled beets, ribbons of torched beets, Kalamata olives, chermoula salsa, B&W Farms tiny arugula, radish, “angel hair” scallion, black olive powder, candied almonds and 1 Perfect Falafel –Falafel croquette, Tahi-amba, tomato gel, Israeli salad, zaatar, pickled red onion and micro cilantro. There is also the ethereal Chicken Liver Dreaming to Become Foie Gras: chicken liver pate, silan date honey, crunchy shallot, pistachio crumble, cornichon and grilled bread; 1000 Layers Steak with Tahi-amba, burn salad, Anaheim hot pepper, grilled pita and Uzbeki Seniya – lamb kebab, Har Bracha tahini, roasted red onion, sweet harissa, amba, tomato foam and Uzbeki apricot salad.
Desserts created by Pastry Chef Stav Stephanie Hayun transport diners straight to the evocative flavors of the Middle East with dishes such as Frishman Malabi – coconut custard with rose water, pistachio crumble, rose syrup, and coconut flakes – and Katayef, a deliciously refreshing taste of Issac’s lemon gelato, caramelized nuts, sumac and simple syrup.
Chef Shabtai plans to introduce new dishes as the restaurant finds its stride, sharing a new culinary masterpiece weekly.
Spanning 2,150 square feet, with seating for 60 in a spacious dining room surrounding a big open kitchen, guests get to enjoy the action whether seated at the bar, in the dining room, or at an elegant family-style captain’s table perfect for larger groups, nestled behind a wall.
Shabtai (40) has no formal kitchen education, learning his way by watching his grandmother – first, seated on the kitchen counter as a young boy inhaling the smells, watching her work and then by her side as he got older – his love for her and the food and nourishment she provided one and the same. Starting as a young teenager, he has worked in every aspect of the restaurant industry, working his way up the ranks both front and back of house – dishwasher, busboy, server, cold line, hot line, bartender and liquor salesman. That translated into high-level culinary positions in Israel and New York, – invited by Meir Adoni, a well-renowned Israeli chef, to open Nur, an instant sensation in the city’s Flatiron District in 2018, followed by stints at Alenbi, Basta, Raphael, Le Relais Jaffa and other cutting-edge restaurants between New York and Israel. A stint as a private chef, servicing well-known celebrities and high networth figures, followed and prompted a move to Miami, where Shabtai saw the food landscape as ripe for innovation. He spent a year searching for the perfect location and found it with the

assistance of Noa Figari, a realtor who became so enthralled with Shabtai’s vision that she now runs the operation and business development of Gourmet Hospitality Group, Mutra’s parent company. Another integral piece of the puzzle is Michael Werzberger, a businessman from New York who initially hired Raz as a private chef and became such a fan of his culinary creations that he decided to invest. Michael is deeply passionate about transforming the Kosher dining experience while redefining an upscale yet approach-

able hospitality environment.
Mutra aims to deliver an unparalleled dining experience with the freshest farm-to-table ingredients. With a focus on sustainability and creativity, Mutra is where the old meets the new, creating a truly unique dining atmosphere and redefining the concept of Kosher as more about healthy eating than anything else.
The central image in the restaurant is that of Mutra herself from her wedding day. “By putting my grandmother’s name on this restaurant,
I am ensuring that there is no compromise and I must perform at my best to deliver the most incredible experience I can – to live up to her memory and her cooking.”
Mutra is located at 2188 Northeast 123rd Street, Miami, Florida 33181. Reservations are encouraged and can be made through Resy. Telephone: (786) 860-1213. Online: www.mutramiami.com

APost-RoeWorld: Advocacy Strategies For Supporting Reproductive Rights
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the national conversation around reproductive rights has become more urgent—and more personal—than ever. Communities across the country are grappling with the fallout, especially in states where access to reproductive healthcare has rapidly diminished. But even in this uncertain landscape, hope and action are rising. One event in Miami is poised to shine a powerful light on the path forward.
On Wednesday, May 14th, 2025, the Jewish Fertility Foundation–South Florida (JFF-SFL) will host a pivotal in-person event, A Post-Roe World. Held in downtown Miami and open to the public, this evening gathering promises to be more than just a panel discussion—it’s a call to action.
Bringing Together Experts, Advocates and Allies
Sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and presented in partnership with the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), this event will offer attendees an inside look at the multi-faceted fight for reproductive freedom. A diverse panel of legal experts, medical professionals, faith leaders and advocates will explore the most pressing issues facing reproductive healthcare today—and offer tangible strategies for advocacy and change.
Among the panelists are:
Marla Neufeld, Esq., a surrogacy and assisted reproduction attorney, who will speak to the evolving legal barriers facing intended parents and fertility professionals post - Roe.
Laura Lee Rodriguez, Florida State Policy Advocate for NCJW, who brings deep knowledge of grassroots mobilization and legislative advocacy.
Elizabeth Schwartz, Esq., a trailblazer in adoption and reproductive law, known for her fierce commitment to family rights.
perspective on reproductive access challenges.
More Than Policy: It’s Personal
What makes this event especially powerful is its focus on storytelling and lived experience. Attendees will hear firsthand how real people’s lives—and futures—have been shaped by policies
they’re happening now. The evening will serve as both an educational forum and a space for community healing and empowerment.
Participants will leave with more than inspiration — they’ll gain tools for action. The event promises to outline clear, impactful advocacy strategies tailored for individuals, families, and community leaders. Whether it’s contacting legislators, supporting local clinics, or joining faith-based advocacy efforts, every attendee will walk away with actionable steps to take back into their communities.

Dr. Vanessa Weitzman, a reproductive endocrinologist, who will provide critical medical insight.
Rabbi Jessica Jacobs of Temple Beth Sholom, who will share the Jewish ethical framework supporting reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
Julie Cohen, JFF’s Senior Manager, who will offer a personal
passed in faraway courtrooms and statehouses. The event aims to humanize the issue, giving voice to those who have navigated the complex, and often heartbreaking, world of reproductive healthcare in a post-Roe America.
From fertility treatments halted due to legal confusion to delayed medical interventions during pregnancy complications, the consequences of restrictive laws are no longer theoretical—
The conversation will also highlight the unique perspective and role of the Jewish community in the reproductive rights movement. Grounded in Jewish values of compassion, justice, and dignity, many Jewish organizations have long been at the forefront of defending reproductive freedom. This event continues that tradition by bridging faith and activism in meaningful, modern ways.
Why Now, Why Here?
Florida is currently a battleground state when it comes to reproductive rights. With changing laws, ongoing court battles, and a deeply divided political climate, events like this serve as critical organizing points for advocacy and awareness. Miami, with its vibrant, diverse population and strong Jewish community, is the perfect backdrop for such a vital conversation.
This event is free and open to anyone in the South Florida area. Light snacks and beverages will be provided, and the exact downtown Miami location will be shared with registrants one week prior.
Spots are limited — RSVP now to be part of this crucial discussion: https://jewishfertilityfoundation .org/floridapostroe/blm_aid= 1371565057
In a world where access to reproductive care is no longer guaranteed, knowledge is power—and community is everything. Join JFF-SFL and its incredible partners for an evening that promises to educate, inspire, and mobilize.
The road ahead may be long, but together, we can walk it with strength, strategy, and solidarity.

JewishMuseumOfFlorida
The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU (JMOFFIU) established in 1995, is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of more than 250 years of Florida Jewish history, arts and culture, with a growing collection of more than 100,000 items. It is located in the trendy SoFlo area of South Beach at 301 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. The Museum is housed in two restored historic buildings that were once synagogues for Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation.
The original synagogue was built in 1929, and the second, built in 1936, was designed by Art Deco Architect Henry Hohauser and features 80 stained-glass windows, a copper dome, and a marble bimah. The two buildings are joined together by the Bess Myerson Gallery, named after former Miss America, Bess Myerson.
While reflective of the Jewish experience in Florida, JMOF-FIU creates understanding of the shared immigrant experience in our multicultural society. The Museum’s core exhibition, MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida 1763 to
today, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, began as a statewide grassroots collecting effort, which included gathering photographs, artifacts and oral histories from descendants of pioneer families, as well as the state’s more recent arrivals. Mosaic traveled to 13 Florida cities from 19901994 and generated so much interest that by 1995, it evolved into the Jewish Museum of Florida.
JMOF became part of FIU in 2012, creating a historic partnership that leverages the resources of the Museum and FIU to ignite a new era of interdisciplinary education and research. Using the lens of the evolving immigration experience of Jews in Florida, JMOFFIU serves as a forum to promote tolerance, further global understanding and create connections to Jewish culture, history, arts and contemporary civic life for diverse audiences. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, JMOF-FIU has achieved a standard of excellence in its methodology for research, collecting, conservation, archiving, storing and interpreting its holdings.
JMOF-FIU presents a vibrant schedule of thought-provoking exhibitions that change periodically, paired with a dynamic array of programming including: lectures, workshops, family activities, and presentations on topics of Jewish studies worldwide, with international scholars and presenters and local movers and shakers. Many of the programs are in collaboration with FIU departments including the Green School of International and Public Affairs, as well as various cultural and community organizations.
The Museum’s extensive collection of artifacts, documents, photographs and oral histories focuses on the people who have shaped and continue to influence the development of our state, drawing crucial links between their contributions and the social, political, economic, cultural and religious aspects of Jewish life in Florida and the relationship of Jews to the dominant non-Jewish population. As such, the collection offers a wealth of opportunity for research by students, scholars, historians and journalists. JMOF-FIU is also an extended class-
room for thousands of Miami-Dade County Public School students, inspiring them to explore their own cultural heritage and those of all ethnic groups in our multicultural society.

Inside The 2025 Maccabi Tzair Challah Bake
There’s a special kind of magic that happens when flour, water, and tradition come together — and this spring, that magic is happening in the heart of the David Posnack JCC’s Bass Lobby. Mark your calendars and warm your ovens: the 2025 Maccabi Tzair Challah Bake is set to be an evening filled with dough, dancing, and deep connection to Jewish culture. Set for an evening in April, the Challah Bake is more than just a culinary experience — it’s a celebration of family, heritage, and community, all rolled into one. Organized and led by the energetic youth leaders of Maccabi Tzair, this annual event has become a staple for families looking to blend learning with fun. General Admission is just $36 per person and $18 for Chanich | Madrich, it’s also an event with heart: proceeds go directly toward supporting Maccabi Tzair’s vibrant youth programming.
Whether you’re a seasoned challah baker or have never braided a loaf in your life, everyone is welcome. Participants of all ages will be guided through the step-by-step process of making their very own challah — from mixing and kneading to braiding and blessing. All ingredients are provided, and everyone goes home with their very own dough to bake and enjoy.
But this night is about much more than bread.
Designed with families in mind, the event offers a chance for parents and children to connect not only with each other but with others in the community. In fact, organizers strongly encourage families to sign up together, noting that children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
And while the evening is fun for all, it also provides a unique opportunity for youth leaders to step into the spotlight.
Hoping to bring even more people into the fold, there’s a special perk: refer five participants and attend for free. All attendees have to do is list your name as their referral when they sign up — a small gesture that builds big connections. Simply ask them to name you as a referral on the form.
So whether you come for the tradition, the dancing, or just the chance to make the fluffiest, goldenbrown challah of your life, the 2025 Challah Bake Presented by Maccabi Tzair is ready to welcome you with open arms — and floured hands.

StandUp&SpeakOutWithAdelaCojab
In a world increasingly marked by division, misinformation, and antisemitism, one voice rises above the noise to champion truth, resilience, and identity: Adela Cojab. With unwavering passion and clarity, Cojab has become a leading figure in Jewish advocacy and education, inspiring a new generation to embrace their heritage and stand up for what’s right.
On Monday, May 12th, 2025 and Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, David Posnack JCC & Michael-Ann Russell JCC will host two evenings that promise to empower and energize the Jewish community. “Stand Up & Speak Out: The Jewish Response to Today’s Challenges” will feature Adela Cojab in person at two venues: the David Posnack JCC in Davie and the Michael-Ann Russell JCC in North Miami Beach. These events are more than just lectures—they are calls to action, urging attendees to engage, educate, and elevate Jewish voices in a time of great need.
A Voice Born from Experience
Adela Cojab’s journey into activism didn’t start in a boardroom—it began on the front lines of campus life. Cojab attended New York University and graduated from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a degree in Middle Eastern diaspora studies in 2019. She was president of the pro-Israel group Realize Israel, she faced firsthand the rising tide of antisemitism and anti-Zionism on college campuses. Her response: She refused to be silent. In 2019, she famously filed a federal complaint against NYU under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, citing the university’s failure to protect Jewish students from discrimination and harassment. Her bold move sent ripples through higher education, challenging institutions to recognize and address antisemitism with the same gravity as other forms of hate.
Since then, Cojab has become a sought-after speaker, educator, and advocate. Her work has taken her from the United Nations to international conferences, and now, to South Florida— where her message is more vital than ever.
A Night of Empowerment
Attendees of “Stand Up & Speak Out” can expect more than just a speech—they’ll be part of a movement. Adela Cojab brings a unique blend of personal experience, academic insight, and motivational energy. She addresses complex issues with clarity, discussing how young Jews today can maintain pride in their identity while navigating often-hostile environments. Her message resonates deeply with audiences of all ages, but especially with students and young adults, many of whom are confronting antisemitism on campuses, online, and in social spaces. For them, Cojab offers guidance—and hope. She equips attendees with practical tools: how to engage in dialogue, respond to misinformation, and build coalitions that support a vibrant and inclusive Jewish future.
Organized by Claudia Tabacinic, these two events are not to be missed:

Whether you’re a parent, student, educator, or simply someone passionate about Jewish continuity, these events offer a rare opportunity to engage with one of today’s most compelling Jewish voices.
Building a Brighter Future
What sets Adela Cojab apart is her belief in the power of youth. She doesn’t just speak to young people—she speaks with them, recognizing their potential to lead. Her events often turn into forums for dialogue, where students share their experiences, fears, and triumphs. In return, Cojab offers mentorship, encouragement, and a network of support.
At a time when Jewish communities around the globe face significant challenges, Cojab’s message couldn’t be more urgent. She reminds us that being Jewish is not something to hide or defend—it’s something to celebrate.
With antisemitism on the rise, and misinformation spreading rapidly online, silence is no longer an option. “Stand Up & Speak Out” is not just an event—it’s an invitation. An invitation to become informed, to be inspired, and to take action.
Join Adela Cojab and the South Florida community for two unforgettable evenings of courage, clarity, and commitment to Jewish identity!

7-Night Royal Caribbean International cruise for two to Northern Europe or the Mediterranean

Imagine sailing across the sparkling Mediterranean or exploring the majestic landscapes of Northern Europe, all while supporting a cause that preserves one of the most important legacies of our time. That’s exactly what the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center (HDEC) is offering with their 2025 Annual Online Raffle. By purchasing a raffle ticket, you not only get a chance to win a seven-night Royal Caribbean cruise for two, but you also help fund HDEC’s mission to educate and combat the dangers of bigotry, hatred, and intolerance.
Founded 45 years ago, HDEC is a nonsectarian, NonProfit Organization dedicated to documenting the authentic memory of the Holocaust and educating future generations about its atrocities. Their mission is clear: to preserve the history of the Holocaust so that its lessons are never forgotten. Through their work, they ensure that the stories of survivors are heard, and the lessons of tolerance and respect continue to resonate worldwide.
To fund their vital work, HDEC is holding an online raffle, offering a seven-night Royal Caribbean International cruise for two to either Northern Europe or the Mediterranean as the grand prize. This cruise is the perfect getaway for anyone who enjoys history, culture, or simply the joy of cruising in style, and it comes with a value that far exceeds the price of the ticket. But that’s not all! There are 22 other amazing prizes up for grabs, all generously donated
How It Works
Entering the raffle is simple, and the impact of your participation is enormous. A single raffle ticket costs just $100, and if you purchase five tickets, you’ll receive an extra ticket for free—an additional chance to win the grand prize or one of the other remarkable prizes.
The raffle is already off to a strong start, having raised $10,126 of the annual fundraising goal. With your help, HDEC aims to reach a target of $50,000 by Tuesday, June 10th, 2025, the date of the official drawing. Every ticket purchased gets the center one step closer to that goal, helping to fund their ongoing efforts in education and documentation.
Why It Matters
For the past four and a half decades, HDEC has been a steadfast guardian of Holocaust memory. With programs that include survivor testimony preservation, educational outreach, and special exhibits, the center has worked tirelessly to ensure that the atrocities of the Holocaust are never repeated. Through workshops, survivor interviews, and school pro-
grams, HDEC plays a pivotal role in instilling important values of empathy, understanding, and tolerance among young people.
As the number of living Holocaust survivors continues to decrease, the center’s work becomes even more vital. Their educational programs help foster awareness, preventing future generations from becoming complacent in the face of hatred and discrimination. The raffle funds directly support these initiatives, making it possible for HDEC to reach more students, schools, and communities with the message that “Never Again” is more than just a phrase—it is a call to action.
Participating in the raffle is easy, and the more tickets you buy, the greater your chances of winning. Simply visit the HDEC Raffle Page at: https://hdec.rallyup.com/hdecraffle2025 to purchase your tickets online. SharedFrequencies: Where Faith, Rhythm, And Justice Converge
On the evening of Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale will pulse with more than just music—it will resonate with stories, struggles, and shared dreams. “Shared Frequencies” is more than a concert. It’s a powerful gathering of voices, a spiritual and cultural crossroads where hip hop meets poetry, and Judaism meets Islam, all wrapped in a call for justice and unity.
At the heart of this dynamic evening are two groundbreaking artists: YLove, the pioneering Jewish hip hop artist whose long been defying boundaries, and Mori Taiye, the award-winning Muslim spoken word poet whose verses are as bold as they are beautiful. Together, they’ll take the stage for a one-of-a-kind performance that explores the intersections of identity, spirituality, and social justice—themes more urgent now than ever.

Y-Love, born Yitz Jordan, has carved out a unique space in the global hip hop scene. As an African-American convert to Orthodox Judaism and an outspoken LGBTQ+ advocate, his very presence challenges conventional categories. His rhymes, often laced with Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic, bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary struggle. For Y-Love, hip hop isn’t just music—it’s a mission. His lyrics speak to the complexities of belonging, cultural pride, and the fight against marginalization.
Sharing the mic is Mori Taiye, a rising star whose spoken
word has captivated audiences from local community centers to international stages. A Nigerian-American Muslim woman, Taiye weaves poetry that’s at once personal and political. Her words challenge Islamophobia, celebrate Black joy, and demand equity— delivered with the grace and grit of someone who knows exactly who she is. With awards under her belt and a growing base of fans, Taiye is quickly becoming a voice of a generation unafraid to speak its truth.
“Shared Frequencies” isn’t just about their performances. It’s about what happens when worlds connect— when art becomes a vessel for understanding across boundaries of religion, race, and experience. It’s a night for those who crave authenticity, for those hungry for hope, and for those who believe music and poetry can be forces for real, lasting change.
The event will also feature special opening acts presented by the Jason Taylor Foundation, whose mission supports and uplifts young voices through literacy and the arts. These youth performances will kick off the eve-

MajorityOfIsraelisBelieveCivilWarIsARealRisk
A new poll conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI)’s “Israeli Society Index” found that 60% of the public believe there is a real danger of civil war breaking out in Israel, the findings published recently stated. The poll also surveyed Israelis’ views towards the attempted dismissals of the Shin Bet chief and attorney-general, as well as if there is an Israeli “deep state.”
JPPI’s poll was conducted in light of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Aharon Barak’s March 20th warning that “we are an instant away from a civil war,” due to internal disputes.
The poll found that 27% of respondents agreed with Barak, while 33% said he is exaggerating but there is still a real danger of a civil war occurring. The poll added that 16% believed there is no real danger of a civil war. A majority of all political ideologies, except the right, believed that there was a real danger of civil war, the poll found.
Notably, a poll by Maariv found that 58% of Israelis feared a civil war amid the judicial reform crisis surrounding the reasonable standard law in July 2023, amid highly attended weekly nationwide protests which paused after Hamas’s October 7th massacre.
Shin Bet Chief and Attorney-General Dismissals
JPPI also surveyed public attitudes towards the legality of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempting to fire Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar and the high court’s attempts to intervene.
A total of 38% of Israelis polled believe that the court should cancel Bar’s dismissal.
Among the politically right-wing, 76% believed the court lacked authority, while 47% of center-right Israelis polled believed the same. A majority of those on the left believed that the court should cancel Bar’s dismissal.
However, 53% of Israelis believe that the high court should not intervene in the dismissal of Attorney-General Gali BaharavMiara. 35% believe that the court lacks the authority to intervene and 18% believe that even if it does have the authority, her dismissal is justified.
The poll also found that 35% of respondents believe that the high court should cancel Baharav-Miara’s dismissal.
High Court Rulings Should be Obeyed Regardless
A large majority of those polled found that the government must respect any high court rulings, in the event that the court cancels either Bar’s or Baharav-Miara’s dismissal.
The poll’s findings explained that 40% of respondents believed this because “otherwise, we’ll be dragged into a constitutional crisis,” while 23% believed this because “the court is the authorized interpreter of the law.”
However, one-in-three Israelis polled believe that the government should not comply with a high court ruling.
Across all ideological groups, except the right-wing, a majority of respondents believe that the government should comply.
Only one-third of right-wing respondents agreed, while twothirds argued that they should not comply with a court ruling.
Does the ‘Deep State’ Exist
of the country’s public institutions use their institutional power in “the service of the left” including using “the judicial system in a distorted way to thwart the will of the people,” as Netanyahu wrote on Social Media.
Two-fifths of Israelis believe that Netanyahu is “wrong,” another two-fifths believe that he is “right” and one-fifth believe that he “is exaggerating.” This latter group believes that there is a problem of balance between different government branches in Israel, but that does not amount to a “deep state.”
Political alignment also correlated with respondents’ likelihood to believe in a “deep state” with 79% of right-wing people agreeing with the prime minister, while 87% of the left, 76% of the center-left and 61% of the center believe that Netanyahu is wrong.
Among Likud voters polled, 82% agreed with Netanyahu, 12% believe he is exaggerating and 4% disagreed.
In total, 58% of respondents did not agree that a “deep state” exists.
Dr. Shuki Friedman commented on the poll stating that “we are on the eve of Passover, a time marked by gathering around Jewish tradition and greater unity, but the data show that Israelis fear we are dangerously sliding down a slope that could lead to even harsher internal conflict.”
“When the right and left are deeply divided in their interpretation of reality and the willingness of the right to obey the court decreases, this danger increases,” Friedman added.
“Israelis must demand that their leaders halt this deterioration and act toward reconciliation, a more moderate discourse, and express this in their actions as well,” he concluded. www.jppi.org.il/en
A slight majority of Israelis, at 51%, opposed the court intervening, with 40% believing that the court has no authority to intervene, while 11% believe they do have the authority but Bar’s dismissal is justified.
Right-wing Israelis, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, believe in the existence of a “deep state” where heads

HaveYouEverWonderedHowYourFamilyEndedUpWhereYouWereBorn
Do you know where your grandparents were living and how they raised their children? Someday, when you become a parent and your children ask you about family history, what will you be able to tell them?
The search for one’s roots is a hobby. Most hobbies require one to learn new skills and improve those by practice. A hobby requires the investment of time, and as much money as one could comfortably spend.
What are the returns from these investments?Discovery of people who came before you and others with whom your family lostcontact. In the old days most people lived and died within a small area where they were born.A child grew up knowing all of their aunts, uncles, cousins and of course, their grandparents.
Discovery is a gradual process. Those whose hobby is Genealogy, often feel victorious and happy each time they find something new and interesting. It is a joyful series of breakthroughs.
In our time, families are often scattered all over the country or even globally.“America is a nation of immigrants.”Native Americans kept their stories either through word-of-mouth, or by recording it through art and other permanent recordings.
Those who are descendants of immigrants, often had lost contact with relatives left behind in a generation or two. Not only the distance becomes a barrier, but the language as well. Good news: with modern tools, such as the internet and various archives much of the history of a family can be recovered.
Have you heard of the Television Program: “Finding Your Roots!”? Professor Henry Louis Gates of Harvard interviews two or three guests in each episode on public television, and then presents each one with the guest’s family tree along with stories discovered from various sources.
A few examples from past programs:A Cuban born Fashion Designer learned about his centuries old roots from the Canary Islands, the ancestry of an African-American celebrity, a football star turned tv host, was traced to Charlemagne (748-814), the first emperor of Western Europe. The hostess of “Fresh Air” on public radio had no idea about her relatives who perished in the Holocaust;a well-known television news anchor discovered his roots both in Africa and in Western Europe.
How is it done and who can do it?1. Interview your elders, record it, or take lots of notes.2. Ask and search for your family’s records, e.g., Birth, Marriage and Death Documents, Diplomas, Immigration Records, Union Cards, even Criminal Records.3. Ask for photos and search both the albums and the shoeboxes.4. The internet seems to be a bottomless well of family data.Census Records are free, the Mormon Church Records are accessible, Public Records of family events Are open to all. 5. Genealogy websites; such as: Myheritage, Ancestry, etc. charge a fee but are often accessible for free at Public Libraries.6. DNA Analysis is a powerful tool and its cost has declined considerably over the years. 7. Newspaper Archives are a rich source of Birth,
Marriage, and Death Announcements.
What to do with all the data you find? Some people focus on building a family tree, others collect stories and produce a family log. Some write a history of the family.Others use the research results to connect with distant relatives.Along with learning about people, most Genealogists also learn a lot of history, geography, politics, etc.One of the joys is to travel to places where one’s ancestors lived and visit their former homes, Schools, Cemeteries, etc.One may get to connect with lost relatives.
Genealogy Is Like A sport:
The more you search, the better you get at it. Join a group or club. Learn from experienced members.Ask your school to offer a class. It is not only about research, but a social activity, where people with similar interests become your friends and helpers.
Let me introduce my two groups:the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miamiandthe Genealogy Society of Greater Miami, Inc. The JGSGM had been meeting monthly at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, North of Downtown Miami, but since the epidemic started, we Zoom. The JGSGM had been meeting at the Pinecrest Branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library. Visitors are welcome at both groups!
Activities of the JGSGM:At each meeting there is a speaker. The topics range from “How to…” to “How I found my xyz.”There are interesting presentations about specific national or social groups, their history, traditions, cus-
toms, etc. There are workshops for beginners and for anyone interested in specific tools. There is an active “cemetery group” who photograph, catalog and map cemeteries.
Activities of the JGSGM:Excellent training sessions about “How to…”Both for beginners and advanced researchers’ talks by visiting speakers about a wide variety of topics.
National And International Meetings
There are many Genealogy groups and subgroups with special interests. For instance, there are groups interested in a country or area of origin, or in a period of history, such as the American Civil War, or the World Wars, etc. These meetings take place at different places and they are very interesting, But quite expensive considering the cost of travel, accommodations, registration and the temptation to buy “stuff,” souvenirs, tools, books and so on…The speakers and group events are very high quality and provide the opportunity to meet and consult with world class experts.
On behalf of both societies, we invite you to test the waters by coming to meet our members who would be happy to discuss any subject in relation to Genealogy research. Thanks for listening!Any questions?

may literally run out of time before their invest ments are restored. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the average life expectancy in the United States is 78.4. Senior Loan Originator Laura Moritz of Classic Mortgage has been helping elderly individuals alleviate the stress of diminishing financial returns, while ensuring that they continue to age profitably within their own homes by educating them on the importance of a reverse mortgage as a supplemental means of retirement income and viable solution to cover escalating expenses during our turbulent economy.
“Simply stated, many people aged 62 and older are extremely fearful that they might not make it to the financial finish line,” said Laura Moritz of Classic Mortgage. “Most have already been forced to withdraw money from personal bank accounts and other liquid assets to pay bills as their stock exchange investments plunge downward. This reality not only jeopardizes their ability to stay in their home environment, but also negatively impacts their future legacy on family members.”
that reverse mortgages are considered “nonrecourse” loans, meaning that the lender cannot demand that you or your heirs pay a penny more than the home is worth. When you pass, the estate has one year to sell the home and pay the lien or refinance. This is no different than a regular mortgage lien. Moreover, since reverse mortgages factor in interest based on the life expectancy of the borrower, if the homeowner dies sooner, the remaining interest is deducted from the lien amount.
“Reverse mortgages are an amazing instrument for seniors who cannot continue to withdraw from their liquid assets without running out of money,” adds Moritz. “With longer life expectancies and rising costs of living, a senior’s fixed income from pensions, Social Security benefits and retirement may not cover necessary expenses or allow seniors to live the quality of life that they desire and deserve through their aging process.”
Other ways that reverse mortgages can be a life-saving solution, especially during stock market uncertainty, include:
• Using the additional income to pay off an existing mortgage.
• Creating an additional credit line to the house which frees up cash.
• Purchasing a new home with no mortgage.
• Using the distributions to make the home wheelchair accessible and other necessary upgrades.
• Allocating some of the payments for home health care.
• Ensuring that non-married, co-habituating seniors receive survivor benefits.
As a result, reverse mortgage payments can be a good way to supplement taxable retirement income to minimize annual tax liability. It’s also a good alternative to selling one’s home if the value has appreciated significantly since the purchase date and the person is worried about a capital gains tax. Additionally, homeowners can use some of the proceeds to pay for a term life insurance policy that is greater than the amount of the loan.
Moritz notes that although reverse mortgages have been around since 1961, they represent only a very small fraction of loans compared to traditional mortgages. As an expert who has successfully originated hundreds of reverse mortgages within 35 years, Moritz debunks some of the common misconceptions about reverse mortgages:
Moritz explains that a reverse mortgage is a loan designed to convert the equity in one’s home, which increases their monthly earnings. Further, the payments a borrower receives from a reverse mortgage aren’t subject to income taxes because they’re considered loan proceeds.
Myth #1: It’s difficult to get approved for a reverse mortgage
Fact: To qualify for a reverse mortgage, a person need only be 62 years or older and have equity in their home. The total loan offering is based on their exact age (the older the person, the greater the potential amount of the loan), the home’s value, and interest rates. On the other hand, it’s more difficult to qualify for a tra ditional mortgage, which is based on a person’s income level and credit score.
Myth #2: The bank will own the house
Fact: In a reverse mortgage, the homeowner continues to own the house. The lender secures the loan with a lien on the property, but the homeowner maintains full ownership and title. This means that the homeowner can renovate the property, sell it, or pass it on to their heirs. It’s important to note that the person must also keep up with home maintenance repairs and continue to pay annual property taxes and homeowners’ insurance. The reverse mortgage loan becomes due and payable only when the borrower dies or moves.
Myth #3: A reverse mortgage increases debt, can use up equity and create issues for heirs
Fact: If you remain in your home for a long time, it’s possible that your reverse mortgage loan balance may eventually grow larger than the value of your home. However, the good news is
• Accessing their children’s inheritance now instead of waiting until they pass to help a sick child, distressed grandchild, thus, helping to enrich their lives.
• Helping the senior age in place rather than downsizing or renting their property.
“Reverse mortgages are a better big picture decision now more than ever for seniors,” concludes Moritz. “It’s important for elderly people to work with someone they trust and to put the loan in place before they lose cognitive ability to make decisions.”

Each session is an invitation to dive deep into the evolution of Jewish life in Miami Beach — from its early 20th-century origins to its thriving present. Admission is FREE, but space is limited, so attendees are encouraged to reserve a spot on Eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite .com/e/free-miami-beach-jewish-history-talktickets-1064467313389
Miami Beach has not always been the inclusive haven many know it as today. In the early 1900’s, Jewish residents and visitors were frequently excluded from hotels, social clubs, and
even home ownership in certain neighborhoods. Despite these barriers, the Jewish community established a firm foothold, building its own institutions, businesses, and places of worship. Over time, those roots grew into a strong network of cultural, political, and economic influence that has helped shape the Miami Beach we know today.
The museum’s history talks trace this transformation — how resilience turned into leadership, and how a once-marginalized group helped create a flourishing cultural tapestry that continues to evolve.
A Living Legacy in a Historic Space
There’s something particularly special about holding these talks within the walls of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Housed in two lovingly restored former synagogues, the museum is itself a testament to the history it seeks to preserve and share. The venue embodies the spirit of the community it represents, with its original stained-glass windows and Art Deco details whispering stories of generations past.
Visitors will find themselves immersed not just in historical facts, but in the atmosphere of a time when Jewish families were establishing roots in a new land, all while maintaining ties to rich cultural and religious traditions.
Each session is more than a lecture — it’s a chance to connect across time and culture. Whether you’re a local who grew up hearing tales of your grandparents’ Miami beginnings or a newcomer curious about the layers beneath the city’s sun-kissed surface, the Miami Beach Jewish History Talk offers something for everyone.
Expect to hear about early Jewish entrepreneurs who opened some of the city’s first Kosher hotels, community leaders who fought to end housing discrimination, and local artists and thinkers whose work continues to impact the cultural scene. The talks also highlight how Jewish Miamians have contributed to the broader movements for civil rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and interfaith collaboration.
The series is part of the museum’s larger mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the Jewish experience in Florida. By focusing on Miami Beach, these talks hone in on a locale that played an outsized role in shaping Florida’s Jewish narrative.
Organizers note that part of what makes these talks so meaningful is the audience participation. Many attendees bring their own stories and questions, enriching the conversation and helping to preserve even more slices of history. The museum encourages intergenerational visi-
tors — grandparents, parents, and children — to attend together and reflect on how personal and communal histories intertwine.
As Miami Beach continues to evolve and welcome new waves of residents and visitors, understanding its layered past becomes all the more important.
Whether you attend for the historical insight, the community connections, or simply to appreciate the beautifully restored museum space, the Miami Beach Jewish History Talk offers a rare and meaningful way to engage with the city’s cultural heart.
