Memorial Cancer Institute To Attack Liver Tumors With Ultrasound Waves Cancers In Other Organs Expected To Be Next Targets For Non-Surgical Approach

The latest advancement in the treatment of Liver Cancer is liquifying tumors with high-intensity ultrasound waves in a completely non-invasive fashion. The new approach provides additional options for patients with the difficult diagnoses of Malignant Liver Tumors, according to Dr. Omar Llaguna, a Surgical Oncologist with the Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Healthcare System.

The FDA-approved technology, known as the Edison Histotripsy System, is expected to arrive at Memorial in May and could immediately benefit hundreds of Cancer patients. Llaguna and his colleagues will be among the few specialists in South Florida with the training and equipment required to deploy the noninvasive, limited morbidity approach.

“The ultrasound technology is highly targeted, enabling us to generate a bubble cloud that disrupts and damages Cancer Cells in the Liver, effectively liquifying the mass for the body to eliminate,” said Dr.

Llaguna, an expert in the treatment of Gastrointestinal Cancers. “Imagine an underwater tornado within the tumor that eliminates the diseased cells while preserving healthy tissue, blood vessels, and bile ducts around it.”

Since the Edison System is noninvasive, patients can undergo treatment without the need for needles, radiation, or surgery, meaning less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications. It is a complement to, not a replacement for, traditional Chemotherapy, which remains the standard of care for most GI Cancers.

The Histotripsy Procedure is performed under general anesthesia, not due to pain, but to ensure patient stillness. During the treatment, Surgical Oncologists use a robotic arm to sequentially destroy the tumor. Since there are no incisions involved, there is minimal risk of infection and no concerns about scarring, allowing patients to return home the same day. Clinical trials have shown an impressive

85-95% overall success rate.

Memorial will initially use Histotripsy to target primary Liver Tumors, as well as Cancer that has metastasized to the Liver from other parts of the body. Histotripsy for tumors in the Kidneys, Prostate, and Pancreas are currently under investigation as potential targets for the ultrasound treatment.

“It’s uncommon to find an aggressive treatment that doesn’t elevate risk, but this one is different,” said Dr. Llaguna. “Of course, we’ll continue to monitor patients after the procedure since what might be a cure for some might only slow the progression of Cancer in others,” he said.

Memorial will house the Edison System at Memorial Hospital West, where Dr. Llaguna primarily practices, in close proximity to Memorial Cancer Institute. Dr. Christopher Gannon, Memorial’s Chief of Surgical Oncology, and Dr. Gabriel Ologun complete the team, offering Histotripsy as a treatment option for patients with

Primary or Metastatic Liver Cancers. For more information about Histotripsy and the forthcoming approach at Memorial, or if you are a physician interested in making a patient referral, please contact Memorial’s Division of Surgical Oncology at: (954) 844-9520. Memorial Cancer Institute is one of the largest Cancer Centers in Florida, treating nearly 5,000 newly diagnosed patients each year and pioneering advances in patient care. Through a research alliance with Florida Atlantic University, Memorial Cancer Institute is among a select group of Florida-designated “Cancer Centers of Excellence,” offering diagnosis, integrated treatment, clinical trials/research, counseling, and support services customized for the patient and their family in a healing environment close to home. Why Are There CRAs? Part III

What is the fate of our CRA? I asked for a meeting to discuss the future of our CRA last month. My goal was to have an open discussion between not just our Commission and Staff but provide for input from our community at large. As I shared with our readers, Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub shared her frustration that it was premature to have the discussion since the state was once again looking to abolish all CRAs. Since the state was looking at an October deadline for CRAs and our City is currently planning our Budgets, the discussion was even more timely. As I previously wrote the CRA trust funds are placed in a “lock box” and established to address a specific area. They have broad authority to fulfill the mission. The pro is; the money is set aside to target neglected areas and can only be used according to the CRA Plan. The con is once established, the CRA Fund can only be used within the area. My major concern with not keeping the CRA was how the City would provide economic development services and housing programs without an organization change? How would two new departments be funded? Without a CRA extension, what legislative actions could the Commission take to set up and fund programs? I also asked what projects have not been completed and what they will

got him assigned to his class after winning a golf bet with the band instructor. Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges—Marcus attended Florida International University and Baptiste went to Florida State—but then reconvened, moved into an apartment together, and started trying to produce other musicians.

They developed an act covering hiphop songs on their violins, which became popular in local clubs. Two years after sending in a tape to Showtime at the Apollo, they were invited to appear on the show—which they won, and kept winning. They were approached by the manager of Alicia Keys, who asked them to perform with the singer at the Billboard Awards. Other offers followed—they toured with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, opened for the Wu-Tang Clan and worked with the likes of Alessia Cara, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. All the while, Black Violin continued touring non-stop; playing as many as 200 shows a year and released two independent, self-financed albums before putting out the acclaimed Stereotypes in 2016, followed by 2019’s Take the Stairs, which was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2020 GRAMMYs. Black Violin has always been about taking things further, exceeding expectations, challenging conventions. The duo has steadily built a devoted following and a diverse touring base— culminating in such triumphs as two soldout shows at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, and appearances on the Today Show, CBS Mornings, and PBS Newshour—while occupying a musical lane that’s entirely its own. Black Violin’s work extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into communities nationwide with numerous free performances for students and hands-on engagement with youth symphonies and community centers. Through collaborations with local and national education programs such as Turnaround Arts, Baptiste and Marcus connected with more than 100,000 students throughout the

cost? Since cities have the ability to do everything the CRA can, the majority of the Commission’s agreement was based on the fact that we can provide programs citywide. While I shared my concern that now the Commission would need to stand on the premise we would commit to performing the programs and most importantly funding them.

Whether all CRAs will be forced to end in October or if we sunset in two years our work is cut out for us. Our CRA in two years will lose the contributions from the County, Hospital District and Children’s Services Council leaving the City’s CRA TIF at $14.5 Million. While that seems like a tremendous amount of dollars, remember simple projects can be millions of dollars. If we must close everything out in October, we must have every project and dollar accounted for. If we do not, the other taxing agencies will have the right to take their contributions back. Currently, that amount is a bit over $10 Million per year.

The one issue was clear, we wanted a path forward for our CRA Team. The goal will be to have an office of Economic Development and Affordable Housing. Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, we discussed an Affordable Housing Trust and now we must look at the housing assets of the CRA into a trust.

Staff was directed to begin looking at

the cost to sunset and to establish a new path forward considering both the October date and the 2027 date. Our 2024 Annual Report was issued recently.

The financial plan included the focusing from 25-27 shows a projected value of $85 Million in leveraged investments.

In a snapshot, in 2025 we will be adding 30 plus affordable units that will remain affordable. This means that they will not be built and flipped by outside investors, which has been adding to the affordable housing crisis.

The CRA in 2024 alone provided $3 Million through our Neighborhood Improvement Programs. These include senior grants, window and door grants, housing assistance, emergency rental and other programs. These programs are very popular. Commissioner Anabelle LimaTaub shared and agreed that these programs are needed. Her goal is to provide them citywide. We do provide window and door grants citywide currently. Broadening the CRA programs is a great idea but I shared my concern, the devil is in the details.

How much funding will be set aside by the commission? What will staffing levels be to expand services citywide? What parameters will be set for applicants? As we continue to work on the future budgets for both CRA and City my focus will be on ensuring that we are providing grants to

those that are truly in need and leveraging any incentive programs to preserve affordable housing.

Like every other level of government, we are facing the financial uncertainties created by the State and Federal Government. We laid the groundwork for fiscal stability and have robust reserves while replacing and improving Infrastructure. Losing $10 Million in TIF will impact all our Infrastructure projects. Like every household, our costs to provide services and to vital Infrastructure improvements will be impacted by an increase in Tariffs, supply chain issues and personnel issues created by the high cost of living in South Florida. We are in the Budget process now and I encourage every resident to attend our meetings! If you cannot attend in person they are televised live on Government Channel 78 and recorded. The Pompano Players fifth production of their inaugural season, The World Goes ‘Round – a musical retrospective of the work of the award-winning Composer and Lyricist duo John Kander and Fred Ebb will open on Friday, April 25th, 2025 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center and run through Sunday, May 4th, 2025.

“ …an unexpected delight: a handsome, tasteful, snazzily staged outpouring of song and dance that celebrates all the virtues of the Kander-Ebb catalogue” Frank Rich, The New York Times Kander and Ebb created some of Broadway’s most iconic musicals including Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Fosse. The World Goes ‘Round is a cleverly curated collection of love songs, torch songs and wonderfully acerbic comedic numbers from those classics, as well as from many of their other lesser-known shows. The World Goes ‘Round’s title is based on a song Kander and Ebb wrote for Liza Minelli to sing in the film “New York, New York” (that song is entitled “But the World Goes ‘Round.)”

“The World Goes ‘Round is, in many

The World Goes ‘Round – A Musical Retrospective

ways, a meditation on perseverance,” says the Production’s Director, Jeremy Quinn. “Through the lens of Kander and Ebb’s rich and emotionally complex songbook, this revue becomes a theatrical tapestry – one that captures the breadth of the human condition with wit, poignancy and unflinching honesty. These songs, culled from a remarkable canon of musicals, transcend their original contexts to speak to something more universal: the ability to endure, to dream, to lose and to begin again.

“What fascinates me most about this piece is its non-linear, mosaic structure,” Quinn says. “There is no conventional plot—no singular protagonist or conflict –but instead a series of emotional snapshots that, when placed side by side, illuminate the resilience and absurdity of simply being alive. That structure invites the audience to find themselves in the material, to make their own connections and to interpret each moment through a personal lens.

“In approaching this production, our team embraced that openness. We explored how each song exists in conver-

can give way to vulnerability and how joy and sorrow are never far apart. By rooting our staging in the present, we sought to underscore the timelessness of these themes: ambition, regret, longing, reinvention. These are not relics of the past – they are ever-present, ever-relevant.

“I am deeply grateful to the extraordinary artists who brought their insight and generosity to this process,” Quinn continues. “Their interpretations breathe new life into these songs, revealing fresh layers of meaning while honoring the legacy of Kander and Ebb’s iconic work. My hope is that audiences leave the theatre not only entertained, but also reminded of the quiet, miraculous act of moving forward – of continuing on, even when the path is unclear. Because, as the title insists, no matter what happens, ‘the world goes ’round.’”

Quinn’s talented cast consists of Amanda Lopez (who served as the Coreographer for the Pompano Players recent productions of Respect: A Musical Journey of Women and I Love You, You’re

Perfect, Now Change), Amber Arevalo, Eve Dillingham, Ron DeStefano and Kevin Hincapie.

The World Goes ‘Round’s creative team includes: Music Director Elijah Gee; Keren Lydia is the show’s Choreographer, Claudia Smith is the Scenic Designer and Penny Williams is the Costume Designer. Director Jeremy Quinn will also serve as the production’s Stage Manager. The World Goes ‘Round will run Friday, April 25th, 2025 – Sunday, May 4th, 2025 at Pompano Beach Cultural Center. The theatre is located at 50 West Atlantic Boulevard, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060. Tickets for The World Goes ‘Round range in price from $45 to $65.
