Mom Takes Center Stage Sunday

Mother’s Day Certainly Shines The Spotlight On Someone Very Special By Larry Bustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Shelby Simon spent a better part of 20 minutes - looking at Mother’s Day cards, with five days before Sunday’s official holiday. As she sifted through funny and romantic - boring and the usual - Simon, who is married without children, spoke about the holiday and her views on it, what it means to her. “I am the type of person who buys the card as a formality,” she said. “My relationship with my mom goes way beyond the superficial card, candies, flowers and dinner. This lady is my rock and love her with every ounce of me. But to

me, every day is Mother’s Day.” While many feel the same - the “formality” of the holiday, according to the National Retail Federation, will set Americans back an average of $181.00 this year, slightly less than last year’s record-high spending of $176.63. What is expected to unfold by Sunday night is spending will reach $25.4 billion. As a reference point, $20 billion was spent on Valentine’s Day. For Oliver Restrepo of Hallandale Beach, greeting cards are always the order of the holiday. He and his kids have three to four cards - stuffed with Mother’s, Page 3A

Hallandale Boys, Girls Win 2A State Track Titles Hollywood Beach Sweep Clean-Up Saturday, May 12

Hollywood Beach - One of Hollywood’s greatest assets is its beautiful sandy beach. Travelers from all over the world choose our backyard as their vacation destination. As with any popular destination, the more people who visit—the more debris get left behind.

One way the City helps to keep Hollywood Beach beautiful is by gathering volunteers every second Saturday of the month for the Hollywood Beach Sweep. Volunteers meet at Charnow Sweep, Page 3A

Lightning struck twice for Hallandale High’s track teams over the weekend. Both the boys’ and girls’ took home team titles in Class 2A - as Broward County came away with three of the eight state champions at the track and field championships on Saturday at University of North Florida. The Lady Chargers ran away from the field in team points. Hallandale won by 58 over American Heritage, 13880. The win for the Hal-

landale boys was much tighter as the Chargers had to come from behind in the second-to-last event scored, the shot put, and then hold off the

Patriots in the final 4x400 relay. In beating American Heritage by 10 points,

Jai alai finding its place at Casino @ Dania Beach - Again

Indeed – the jai alai that we all knew – has indeed changed. The players, the game and the concept – making it fan friendly – has brought in plenty of new fans.

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Dania Beach - The need for speed is back and running on all cylinders. The Casino @ Dania Beach has made so many changes that has completely transformed this once dormant and lifeless property. From first class entertainment and dining - to slots and poker – this is now a destination, making this a hot destination to be involved with.

With all the changes being made – with the food, gaming and dining – one of the mainstays and the reason for the transformation – is making a comeback. The game of jai alai caught on like wildfire in South Florida in the 60’s and 70’s and then died out as fast. Like greyhound racing, jai alai is indeed the reason – for the moment – that casinos can be in place. So, with that in mind, they have kept the

sport in tact, while cutting back. For Nashville residents Kelly and Mark Thomas, visiting Fort Lauderdale Beach had many other side trips planned during the week. One of the places that Kelly and Mark wanted to visit was the Casino @ Dania Beach – and last Sunday, they spent four hours longer than expected.
