New State-Of-The-Art CT Scanner Now Available To Patients In Wanda And Jim Moran, Jr. Emergency Department At Holy Cross Health
The State-Of-The-Art Philips Spectral CT 7500 is now open and available to patients at the newly named Wanda & Jim Moran, Jr. Emergency Department (ED). A transformational $6.5 Million gift from Philanthropists Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. and the Wanda & Jim Moran Foundation enabled Holy Cross Health to make advancements to the ED and to purchase this CT scanner.
This generous contribution significantly elevates the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and ability to better serve the community with enhanced emergency care. In recognition of one of the single largest donations in the hospital’s 70-year history, the ED was officially named in their honor during a celebration.
“At Holy Cross Health, we believe that generosity is the foundation of transformation. This gift from the Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. Foundation is a powerful investment in the future of emergency care,” said Laura Denoux, Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Holy Cross Health Foundation. “It’s not just about naming a department. It’s about honoring a legacy of compassion and community impact. This gift allows us to expand access, improve outcomes and serve our patients with excellence.”
This CT scanner enables practitioners to provide faster, more accurate assessments and interventions for patients experiencing emergencies such as stroke, acute cardiac and vascular conditions, spinal cord injuries, internal bleeding and complex bone fractures. The machine, which takes only two seconds to scan the chest, abdomen and pelvis, has a large bore and height-adjustable table to provide comfort for patients, while providing high-quality, low dose and low contrast images for physicians to review. The clear, accurate images help practitioners make life-saving decisions faster.
“I see the ripple effect of this gift across departments. It improves collaboration, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and ultimately saving lives,” said Pierre Monice, MBA, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer at Holy Cross Health. “Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr.’s generosity is helping us build a more resilient, responsive healthcare system for our community.”
Doctors, nurses and ED support staff are now better equipped to handle complex cases and deliver emergency care
with greater speed, precision, compassion and coordination. In addition to the purchase of the CT scanner, the gift was also used to convert an X-ray room into a dedicated CT room, acquire new medical equipment and support renovations and capital improvements.
“This gift has had an incredible impact on our nursing teams. It has enabled us to enhance training and improve workflows,” said Taren O’Brien, MSN, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Holy Cross Health. “The new CT scanner is already making a difference in how quickly we can respond to critical cases. Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr.’s support empowers our nurses to do what they do best, care deeply and act swiftly.”
Combined with previous contributions to Holy Cross, the couple’s support totals $8 Million. Their generosity will leave a legacy for generations to come and con-
tinues to uplift the entire community.
“This isn’t just a donation, it’s a partnership,” said Mark Caputo, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Holy Cross Health. “Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. understand the urgency and complexity of emergency care. Their investment is helping us innovate, adapt and meet the evolving needs of our patients with confidence.”

Inside FPL’s Lightning Lab - Putting Florida’s Grid To The Test
Whether he’s testing transformers with 1,400 amps of simulated lightning or verifying bucket trucks can safely handle high-voltage encounters, Wigberto “Wiggy” Flores-Hernandez is energized by his work every day.
Flores-Hernandez is a Senior Engineer at Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) Reliability Assurance Center (RAC), one of the utility industry’s most specialized facilities. He is part of a team that ensures FPL equipment can withstand Florida’s harsh weather conditions, like the corrosive effects of salty air and the frequent lightning strikes for which the state is known. His work at the RAC helps ensure the crews working on the grid stay safe by properly channeling dangerous electrical surges away from equipment and into the ground.
Flores-Hernandez started his career with FPL at the St. Lucie nuclear plant in 2016, where he worked as a design engineer before taking a position at the RAC in 2018. The transition from nuclear to reliability testing opened a world of opportunities that has kept him highly engaged.
“The great thing about showing up to work is I get the opportunity to wear different hats,” said Flores-Hernandez. “It’s exciting, every day I get to test different things.”
At the heart of the RAC sits the crown
jewel: a lightning lab that simulates the real-world conditions that electric equipment must endure in Florida. The Sunshine State leads the nation in lightning strikes, making this testing capability essential for grid reliability.
“We power up our surge simulator to full capacity and then create an artificial lightning strike to test our equipment,” said Flores-Hernandez. “We use 20,000 volts and 10,000 amps of electricity — that’s twice the voltage and electrical current that most utilities in other states typically use for testing, but they don’t have to deal with lightning storms like we do here in Florida.”
The lab’s reputation extends far beyond Florida.
“The lab has established itself as one of the industry’s most trusted testing facilities,” said Flores-Hernandez. “When vendors develop new products, earning FPL’s approval becomes a coveted industry benchmark that validates quality nationwide.”
The RAC also houses other tools and technologies that would make most laboratories envious. A salt fog chamber simulates two years of coastal weathering in just three months, subjecting equipment to the demanding conditions that impact FPL’s service area.
“The salt fog chamber is an essential testing asset,” said Flores-Hernandez. “It gives us confidence that when we install equipment near Florida’s coastline, it will withstand decades of salty air, humidity and extreme conditions that our customers depend on us to navigate. This accelerated testing helps us maintain the industry-leading service reliability our communities expect from us.”
The RAC team’s work is perhaps most critical when certifying bucket trucks for live-line work on high-voltage 500kV transmission lines — work that requires absolute trust between crews and their equipment.
“I apply large amounts of electricity to the arm of the truck to check that the electrical current flows safely to the ground as it should,” said FloresHernandez. “Many people, especially newcomers to the field, need to feel confident working around high-voltage power lines that carry 500,000 volts of electricity. We sometimes bring lineworkers here as part of their training so they can witness the testing and see that everything works safely.”
This commitment to safety is an important part of the RAC’s comprehensive approach to stress-testing equipment.
Some tests, like those on substation grounding systems, must be conducted
outdoors and require days of advance preparation. Teams must coordinate favorable weather windows, transport and position heavy testing equipment in the field and establish comprehensive safety protocols before conducting any actual testing.
Flores-Hernandez brings the same commitment to excellence to his life outside the lab. He says his work allows him to stay connected to his community. He coaches his 7-year-old son’s recreation baseball team in Jupiter and participates in a competitive bowling league, where he maintains a 200 average.
Flores-Hernandez says he takes pride knowing when FPL customers flip on their light switches each day, that reliable service is due, at least in part, to the rigorous testing he and his colleagues perform.
“Everything we do here comes back to the people we serve,” said FloresHernandez. “Whether it’s a family turning on their lights after a storm or a lineworker feeling confident on a high-voltage line, our testing ensures that when it matters most, the equipment works exactly as it should. That’s what drives me — knowing that our work in the lab directly protects our crews and helps ensure we provide reliable power to the communities we serve.”
[1] The lightning lab uses 20,000 volts to simulate the realworld conditions that Florida’s electrical grid must endure in the nation’s capital for lightning strikes.

The
Waiter From Page 1A
Playhouse is the final stop on the show’s first major cross-country tour which included the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and Landmark on Main Street in Long Island, New York. Every mother dreams her children will grow up to be happy, healthy, and successful. Every Jewish mother secretly –and often not so secretly – adds specifics to her wish: A doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or these days, a Silicon Valley tycoon would make her very happy. Brad Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.
My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy & STILL Not Famous is the continuation of the story of Zimmerman’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic
actor in New York. One-part standup, one-part theatrical, and all parts uproarious, his first show My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy spent 2 years at OffBroadway’s Stage 72 (Triad Theatre) in New York and garnered rave reviews as it toured through Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Toronto, San Diego, Thousand Oaks, California, Huntington Beach, California, Palm Beach, Florida, the Northshore PAC in Skokie, Illinois, The Gordon Center For Performing Arts in Maryland, the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey and dozens of other cities across the United States.
Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.
Zimmerman also examines the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career and with little tolerance for persnickety diners:
“I don’t want 60 questions, get to the point!” he said he would tell restaurant patrons when he sat down for a recent interview for The New York Times. He joked that if diners prefaced their orders by saying they were in a hurry he would say “So go!” He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’
As he said in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish
Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.” His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off and Zimmerman went on to act - he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyerand to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling and Brad Zimmerman.”
Tickets are on sale now and are available online at: http://mysonthe waiter.com - Or: https://lakeworthplayhouse.csstix .com/event-details.php?e=2261 - Or by phone at: 1 (561) 586-6410. For group rates, 12+ call: 1 (888) 264-1788. Tickets prices range from $45 - $65.

American Heritage Schools Announces Winners Of 2025 Business And Entrepreneurship Competition Finals
Over 70 people attended American Heritage Schools’ annual high school Business Incubator Pitch Challenge, where five finalist student-created companies presented to a distinguished panel of high-profile judges and vied for an opportunity to secure investments and recognition as top innovators. This culminating event took place on Wednesday, October 15th, at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs Hotel & Convention Center.
These aspiring entrepreneurs, students from both Palm Beach and Broward campuses, are all enrolled in an advanced Business and Entrepreneurship curriculum modeled after Harvard Business Review materials. Each delivered polished pitches for their student-created companies, either incorporated and close to entering the market, demonstrating creativity and entrepreneurial spirit in the competition finals.
The finals came after a year of preparation. The students, all Class of 2026 seniors, spent the full year developing their business ideas, starting in October 2024, in preparation for this competitive event.
The event opened with an introduction from Dr. Douglas Laurie, President of American Heritage Schools and Jonathan Fichman, business incubator instructor of the Business and Entrepreneurship PreProfessional Program at American Heritage Schools. Students presented their ideas and faced rigorous Q&A sessions, gaining practical business and entrepreneurial experience. Cash prizes and trophies were awarded to the top three teams, recognizing their hard work and innovation, including:
Earning first place was Mobile Mart, a truck-style store offering a mobile, sustainable shopping option designed to reduce or eliminate packaging and food waste in communities, which was founded by Pranav Rai, Ava Weissman, Sophia Lary, Emily Weyenberg.
Second place was awarded to Wound Watch, a handheld ultrasound scanner that monitors surgical wound healing, providing detailed tissue regeneration insights for better postoperative care, created by students Margaret Trowbridge, Jaimin Patel, Noah Abel, Ananya Zaverchand, Laila Rozenburg.
The third-place team was BloomBee, a bee pollination device for both commercial and retail use, which included students Dylan Chen, Yunxiang Pan, Jiarui Li, Max Trachtenberg.
The esteemed judges’ panel consisted of top-tier industry leaders bringing expertise from various sectors to evaluate the pitches. Judges included Wael Barsoum, M.D., President and Chief Transformation Officer of HOPCo and Former CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida; Tom Herskovits, Former President and CEO of Specialty Foods and Former President of Kraft/General Foods; Andrew Koenig, CEO of City Furniture; and Jim Ryan, a serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist with over 25 years of experience in customer experience, call centers, research and technology solutions.
“Serving as a judge for the American Heritage Business Incubator Pitch Challenge Finals was an exceptional experience,” said Dr. Barsoum. “What sets this program apart is its emphasis on practical application. Students aren’t just learning concepts; they are putting them into action in a competitive, real-world pitch before leading CEOs, venture capitalists and founders. American Heritage Schools are fostering entrepreneurial thinking and empowering future leaders to realize that the American dream is attainable through innovation, dedication, and opportunity.”
“Congratulations to all participants. Each team showcased strategic thinking, creativity and knowledge of market dynamics and consumer needs. The ideas presented demonstrate strong potential to evolve into sustainable enterprises,” said Herskovits. “This event is a testament to American Heritage Schools’ commitment to providing a high-caliber, hands-on business education that bridges academic knowledge with entrepreneurial action.”
“Our second annual Business Incubator Pitch Challenge Finals was a tremendous success,” said Mr. Fichman. “It has been incredibly gratifying to witness the dedication, creativity and perseverance our students have shown throughout the year as they transformed their ideas into viable business ventures. The Business Incubator and AP Seminar courses at American Heritage were designed to empower students to think critically, embrace entrepreneurship, and tackle authentic business challenges. By presenting their ventures before a panel of distinguished industry leaders, students gain invaluable real-world experience, building the confidence, skills, and professional connections essential for future success.”
In 2023, American Heritage Schools introduced the Business Incubator & AP Seminar class, a unique opportunity for
11th graders to embark on a journey of discovery and creativity. The business side of the class focuses on ideation, invention/research and validation of the product idea; business planning; operationalizing the product idea; creation of financials; pitching/fundraising; marketing and sales. The AP part of the class prepares students for the AP Seminar exam through steady research and analysis and cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives.
The course is co-taught by two experienced educators, Mr. Fichman, who leads the Business Incubator section and Kim Kimpton, Ed.D., College Advisor, who guides the AP Seminar curriculum.

Conference in New Orleans:
Combating Antisemitism and Commemorating October 7th
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
As I am preparing to attend a conference in New Orleans with Mayors from around the country, I can now write and release information about the event. Sadly, details have been under strict security measures until recently due to the continued growth in antisemitism.
I was actually invited a few months ago to attend this year’s annual Combatting Antisemitism Movement Summit by the immediate past Israel Counsel General of Miami. With the increase in antisemitic acts since October 7th they have been keenly focused internationally and here in the states urging the importance of calling out hate in today’s world.
Antisemitism remains a grave challenge in many societies, manifesting in prejudice, discrimination, and violence against Jewish communities. The conference in New Orleans is bringing together Mayors, scholars, and leaders from diverse backgrounds to address these issues.
For two days, we will share our recent

The 69th Annual Candy Cane Parade is set to shine on the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk on Saturday, December 6th, beginning at 7 p.m. This year is extra special. In honor of Hollywood’s Centennial, the parade will feature a “Journey Through the Decades” theme that brings a century of style, music and holiday spirit to life. For the first time ever, the parade will also be broadcast live on Local 10 & there will be a live concert at the band shell post-parade! The parade starts off at Missouri Street and travels south along the Broadwalk, passing the parade emcee at the Hollywood Beach Theatre on Johnson Street, before ending at Harrison Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or grab a table at one of the many seaside restaurants for a great view of the floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic groups, non-profits, and children’s organizations. Stay for the live performance by “Making Faces” at the band shell after the parade. Parking on Hollywood Beach can be found at the City-operated Garfield Garage and Nevada Street Garage. Standard parking rates apply. To “Help Keep Hollywood Beautiful,” parade participants are reminded to hand out candy rather than toss it from floats, which helps reduce litter along the Broadwalk and beach. Spectators can show support for sustainability by bringing reusable water bottles and being #SeenBeingGreen. If you plan to attend, please consider donating an unwrapped new toy to those in need. The toy drop off location is the band shell before the parade begins. The 69th Annual Candy Cane Parade is free and made possible by your property tax dollars. Special thanks to all of our
experiences and shared strategies for creating a greater understanding of root causes of hatred and ways to change mindsets. Our shared goal remained sharing tools and strategies to counter hate and promote inclusivity.
Key topics will include the history of antisemitism, the role of education in prevention, promoting interfaith dialogue, and leveraging social media for positive change. The conference is aimed to equip participants with tools and networks to continue the fight against antisemitism in their communities.
During the trip, I will share what measures Hallandale Beach has implemented since October 7th. Our City Manager and Chief of Police has remained vigilant in addressing safety and security at our houses of worship.
We have had a few incidents. While none have been violent, they still have been unsettling. Our commission has been vocal advocates both from the dais and through social media against hate and misinformation.
To show support of Israel, we adopted a sister city, Sderot which was one of the cities and areas hardest hit by the brutal attacks on October 7th. Commissioner Annabelle Lima Taub facilitated this relationship.
We hosted an Arts show from the children of Sderot and a memorial for all the victims of this brutal attack. The art was a therapeutic exercise for the children that experience the attacks.
Last year, I asked that we consider naming a street after Sderot and placing a memorial plaque in memory of October 7th. After receiving approvals a date for this special event has been scheduled on Thursday, January 15th. Due to security, we have a limited amount of seats available and the specific details of the event will only be released to those that have rsvp.
This street’s renaming is symbolic, representing both a literal and figurative path towards unity and progress. Such dedications often serve as public reminders of the values a community holds dear and

also reinforced that the horrific unprovoked attack on the State of Israel will not be forgotten.
The ceremony is expected to bring together local officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations. It will highlight the significance of the street.
This trip to New Orleans promises to be both meaningful and impactful, combining the urgent work of combating antisemitism with the honoring of historical events and community milestones. Through participation in the conference and attendance at the dedication ceremonies, I hope to contribute to a broader movement of remembrance, education, and positive change.

Hundreds of South Florida Spay + Neuter Surgeries Funded by Specialty License Plates
PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary (PURRR) can now offer free spay + neuter services for TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) and community cats thanks to a $25,000 Grant from Florida Animal Friend. “South Florida faces a feline overpopulation crisis, driven by limited access to affordable, high-volume spay + neuter,” said Michelle Schecht, Executive Director of PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary. “We are deeply grateful to Florida Animal Friend for their commitment to animal welfare. This vital support expands our efforts to prevent overpopulation and provide lifesaving services for the region’s most vulnerable animals. The community can join the cause by purchasing a spay/neuter license plate. Each purchase directly funds programs like ours.”
Feline overpopulation in South Florida stems from a lack of accessible, affordable, and high-volume spay + neuter services, compounded by the continued, unmanageable growth of the community cat population. The demand for services
support spay + neuter, PURRR offers significantly reduced rates for community cats, along with discounted pricing for rescues. These subsidies ensure that cost is never a barrier to preventing future litter and reducing overpopulation.
PURRR believes that reducing feline overpopulation requires a unified, community-driven approach. PURRR has cultivated strong partnerships to extend its reach and maximize impact. Its clinic model combines surgical efficiency with compassionate, individualized care, ensuring each cat receives the attention and safety they deserve. PURRR’s dedicated team is driven by a deep love for cats and a commitment to their well-being and is committed to providing consistent, lifesaving services to South Florida’s most vulnerable feline populations.

Most trappers and independent rescuers pay out of pocket or try to fundraise to cover the cost of sterilization, which can be prohibitive when managing dozens, or even hundreds, of cats. With limited funding and few affordable options, necessary surgeries are often delayed, leading to continued breeding cycles and further straining the system. As the feline population continues to grow, the current availability of services cannot meet the ongoing and urgent demand, especially during peak kitten season, which is yearround with surges in spring and late summer.
High-volume, affordable, feline-only programs like PURRR’s are vital to closing this gap and providing the community with a realistic, accessible path to preventing overpopulation.
