The World Classic at Marlins Park hosted a tremendous array of Major League talent, but it also served as a place to voice an opinion or two on walls and bans

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Miami – At a time when not being from the United States isn’t very popular with the current administration, Ana Mendez wore the colors proudly of her native country on Saturday night at Marlins Park.

With so much attention, courtesy of President Donald Trump, being paid to foreigners of all kinds, the Hallandale Beach resident came to make things clear that she was indeed a proud Dominican.

While it was only a baseball game between the United States and the Dominican Republic, Mendez, her boyfriend, Keith, and two sons – Isaac and J.J. - came to cheer on the country she was born in.

“What used to separate the United States from the rest of the world, is that

you could show pride in your country – while respecting where you live in this nation,” Mendez pointed out. “I have friends who live around the world and they love this country because of the freedom to express and to come and go – without having to worry about being deported.”

Mendez joined baseball fans from throughout the world at Marlins Park as part of Baseball’s World Classic that has long united countries and not alienate them.

With nations from around the world competing in this event, that comes around every four years, it is with the intention of having “America’s Favorite Pastime” being that bridge that opens doors in destinations such as Japan and Korea, Cuba, Mexico, and several Eur-

State of Hallandale Beach, Part 3: Time to continue moving forward and getting every resident involved • FINAL OF A 3-PART SERIES

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - As we are now fully into our plans for 2017, it’s time to reflect back - as well as look ahead to the growth of this community and the upgrades that are being made.

We have completed BF James Park and Pool, as well as the OB Johnson and Austin Hepburn Center.

We are currently in the design of our Golden Isles Tennis Center, Peter Bluesten Park and Ingalls Park, which are all out to bid.

These projects also included the construction of the new Main Fire Station, which will include the City’s Emergency Operations Center, four drive-through bays, Fire Administrative Offices, Fire Inspection Offices, training space and living quarters.

This is an impressive 24,640 square foot facility that is scheduled to be completed in July 2017.

The Capital Revenue Bonds were refinanced last year to save the taxpayers money through lower interest rates. Fitch Ratings and S&P Global Ratings have assigned the new series bonds a AA and AA- rating, respectively.

The City is also designing the much-anticipated SW Drainage Project. By fall we hope to have 90% of the design completed. This project will add to our resiliency measures, and protect maNy residents from flooding.

We continue to re-evaluate our strategic plan with a focus on three goals: safety, quality and vibrant appeal. These priorities are the collaborative results of the Citizens and Business Satisfaction Surveys. I want to thank all of you that participated last year in the survey. Your input is heard and utilized.This year we will be performing a citizen’s survey.

What is on the horizon? City Manager Carlton has already met with all department directors. The next steps will be starting our budget process.

We already started talking about some budget issues, but it is much too early to go into any depth.

What is a need? What is a Want?

You might not need a bus, but there are residents that do, to get to their jobs or simply around the community. We all may not use our senior center, but without it, many of our seniors would be shut in.

In addition, Beach Renourishment is expensive and not everyone uses our beach, but homes along the shore are being threatened from sea level rise. People without kids do not use our school, but over 3,000 attend the new Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8 and Hallandale High School. Some of these items may not be wants to some, but are true needs to others.

Over the past years, we have been addressing these concerns in a responsible manner. Over the course of the election it was great to hearmany thanks and praises from residents who understand how much we are doing for businesses and residents alike. My only hope, and speaking with so many residents, we can only trust that the new commission remains sensitive to all our residents - our “bosses”.

Our projects and programs have been recognized in many areas. Our Parks Department continues to be recognized as “Playful City USA” at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, who will be using our drainage projects as part of a presentation to the White House to promote direct city funding.

We were also recognized recently as the first City in Broward County to be designated by the world health organization and AARP as an age friendly community. This will be a

five-year program. The first two years will be evaluating what gaps we have in services and infrastructure to make sure all ages are served with a goal to aging in place.

The next years will be implementation. I have been focused on Housing and Transportation accessibility.

Our entrance sign and way-finding has been recognized and highlighted in Quality Cities, an FLC publication that is circulated around the state, as a model for placemaking.

Obviously with reasonable land values and our new form based codes, some great projects are going up around town. Form base codes are allowing developers to come into the city now, knowing what can be built -and where - without all the politics. For residents, they also know where builders can build. Heights have been cut and neighborhoods preserved.

Notable projects that have not required commission approval are include: Village at Atlantic Shores, Accesso Office, Beacon Towers and Peninsula. Other projects that required commission approval include: 2000 South Ocean Dr., Optima Office North, Gulfstream Point and Art Square. Other are awaiting permits.

Of course, we have Gulfstream Park that is adding to its entertainment options. The Diplomat, which will be re-doing their golf course starting in May. The question for Mardi Gras will be gaming expansion and decoupling in the state. This will allow them to operate without live racing.

We support decoupling. Portability is another buzz word. This would allow tracks to move their licenses. This would be detrimental to our city tax base.

We have gambling. Slots and Poker, but the big question will be Blackjack and possibly a lucrative sports book. Just like the nation, our

state is preparing for legislative session. Things are looking more optimistic this year but this will still be the big question. Everyone realizes that additional gambling would be a boast to our tourism. It would only add more revenue to the state.

There will be plenty of other issues and we will be following them to make sure Tallahassee does not continue to erode local home rule powers.

When it comes to communication and letting residents know about events and other things in their community, a website is always vital.

I want to let everyone know that we have redesigned our City’s website www.cohb.org. It is filled with abundance of information that we all need to be informed. We are focused on continuing to make it more user friendly - with one to two click access points. And links to all our social media.

In closing, I have put so much into this community to help make it what it has become today, and am so proud to be the mayor.

No matter what has transpired in the past, I am confident in the residents and business leaders of Hallandale Beach to believe it will be a bright future if you all get more involved with the City and our tremendous Chamber of Commerce.

Aventura - While research continues to be done to find out more about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, it is still taking lives every day.

We do know that it is a progressive neuromuscular disease. Most people who develop ALS, are between the ages of 40 and 70, although the disease can occur at a younger age. It occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries.

It affects as many as 30,000 people in the United States, with 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Estimates suggest that ALS is responsible for as many as five of every 100,000 deaths in people aged 20 or older.

While some may know of people affected with ALS, to others it hits closer to home. When Stu Hendel was recently diagnosed with ALS, it was Ken Hendel and his sister, Amy Hendel, who were affected by the news.

Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to Host First Annual Sunday in the Park, A Taste of Hollywood

Hollywood - The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will host Sunday in the Park, a Taste of Hollywood on Sunday, April 30 from noon to 5:30 p.m. at ArtsPark at Young Circle.

The community event, free to the public, will feature food, wine, craft beer, art, music and a business expo. Additionally, children will get the chance to participate in age-appropriate cooking lessons, face painting and more at the Muzart Creative Arts Studios’ Kidz Korner.

“Sunday in the Park, a Taste of Hollywood will be an event that exemplifies the Greater Holly-

wood Chamber of Commerce’s mission to promote local businesses and support its community,” said Anne Hotte, the Greater Hollywood Chamber’s Executive Director. “People crave comfort, people crave connection and people crave community. Sunday in the Park will be the answer everyone has been looking for.”

Ping-pong is one of the fastest paced racket sports, requiring muscular and cardiorespiratory endurance. Players need nimble footwork and upper body flexibility to return balls that can fly over 60 miles per hour, demanding faster response times than tennis or badminton. Studies have shown ping-pong improves cognitive function more than dancing, walking, gymnastics or resistance training.

Thanks to an initiative from Hollywood resident and ping pong proponent, Itzhack Feldman, the program has drawn more than 30 participants who enjoy free play on four profes-

sional ping-pong tables and equipment. Participants range from the novice players learning how to play, to more experienced players wanting to compete and take their game to the next level.

“It’s a great value to spend an hour or two in a volley with assorted players on four ping-pong tables, all coaxing and smacking a little ball over the net,” said Ted, an avid participant in the program. Ted is a senior in Hollywood whose doctor recommended he take up the sport to become more active.

Gaby, a 33 year old Hollywood athlete, recently started playing and said, “After a couple rounds, I walked out feeling exhilarated and depleted, but triumphant.”

In the past few months, five athletes who play at the center made it to the South Florida Sen-

iors finals. Three players, Vadin, Elena and Itzhack, advanced to earn medals at the last Senior State Championship, which took place in Clearwater, FL. With less than a year since the program began, residents have become all-stars in the ping-pong community. They now have their sights set on nationals. With a family-friendly environment and athletes willing to teach and give a pointer or two, there is always room for one more in the program willing to volley among friends.

A gathering of thousands along Hollywood Blvd. in Downtown Hollywood came to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It has been done for 19 years.

As one of the best communities in South Florida at hosting street festivals, parades and

other events that attract visitors and residents alike, the City of Hollywood once again parlayed great weather with plenty of fun and entertainment.

As county, city and state officials joined so many along this stretch of road, once again this area was back in a positive spotlight.

“I come every year and it gets bigger and better – and we have a lot of fun,” Cahlan

O’Hara of Hallandale Beach. “Downtown Hollywood in itself is a major attraction, but you add vendors and street music and a real nice parade and it’s a great way to spend the day.”

Ringing in the festive holiday five days before tomorrow’s official March 17th date, local businesses and restaurants were the big winners.

Roth has Marcy worked the event for the past five years. Once

again this year, she saw a difference. It’s a trend that will make City officials very pleased.

“The one thing that I have learned is that if the weather is good, and it stayed that way most of the day, you will do very well,” Roth said.

“People want to come to a parade and celebration – and celebrate. When we got here at 10 in the morning, there were already people asking where to get drinks.

‘Evening Under The Stars’ Helping to Rescue Animals On Saturday, March 25th, Pet Animal Express in Davie will host an elegant evening of live music, drinks and a silent auction as part of an “Evening Under The Stars.”

The event will raise funds to benefit animals in need and universal scanners currently for the Davie Police Department.

Appetizers and basketball go together this March The Final 4 will bring great hoops and plenty of delicious food selections edges.

Meanwhile, mash together avocados with Taco Seasoning. Feel free to use the mild or spicier version of the seasoning and adjust it to your liking.

Start with one tablespoon and add more if you like.

For the tomato salad, roughly chop tomatoes and stir together with vinegar, lime juice, 1 tablespoon of fresh basil and a pinch of salt.

Once bread is toasted, top with a big dollop of avocado mixture and then scoop some tomato salad on top.

Over the next few weeks, college basketball fans will gather in front of their TVs and watch hours and hours of hoops.

As they see some of the best players and teams play, they will get hungry - and while a big meal may be too much when you are viewing 12 hours of non stop basketball, appetizers will come into play.

We have come up with simple recipes that will satisfy everyone while the action heats up on the court.

ANTIPASTO BITES • 24 slices Genoa salami • (medium thickness) • 1 cup marinated artichoke hearts, • drained, finely chopped • 1/3 cup jarred finely • chopped roasted red bell peppers • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves • 4 oz fresh mini mozzarella balls • Salt and pepper to taste

Position oven rack in middle of oven.

Heat oven to 375° F. Place salami slice in each of 24 ungreased mini muffin cups. Press salami slices into cups. Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until salami is crisp. Cool. In large bowl, mix remaining ingredients.

Place 2 to 3 tablespoons mixture in each salami cup, and serve.

SHRIMP WITH TARRAGON AIOLI • 3/4 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup dill pickles, • finely chopped • 2 tablespoons fresh

tarragon, chopped Kosher salt and black pepper 1 1/4 pounds cooked peeled and deveined large shrimp 1 cup store-bought cocktail sauce

In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, pickles, tarragon, and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Serve with the shrimp and cocktail sauce.

SPICED PITA CHIPS • 4 pitas • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons paprika • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Heat broiler. Split the pitas to make 8 rounds and brush them with oil.

Sprinkle with the paprika, oregano, and salt.

Slice the pitas into triangles. Arrange on 2 baking sheets and broil until crisp,

about 2 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450ºF. Slice baguette on a diagonal to make large slices. Drizzle with olive oil. Bake the baguette slices for 5-8 minutes until they are lightly browned around the

Mix in a beaten egg, 3 tablespoons flour (almond or coconut works well), 1/8 teaspoon baking powder and a little maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Top with finely chopped apple and walnuts and butter. Microwave for a minute. Grab and go.

4. Tasty breakfast sandwich: Add to a mug 1 teaspoon melted butter, 1 tablespoon milk, an egg and some chopped onion, green pepper ham and hot

sauce to taste. Microwave about 30 seconds, then scoop out and add to a toasted English muffin topped with a slice of your favorite cheese. Grab, then enjoy the savory goodness.

5. Roll-ups to go: Slather the inside of a 6 inch tortilla with peanut butter, jam, half a smashed banana and dried unsweetened coconut. Roll it up like a burrito, wrap it in a loose paper towel and mi-

crowave it for half a minute before appreciating how the flavors melt in your mouth.
