A Friendship for the ages ‘RON’S GONE WRONG’ IS SURE TO CONNECT WITH AUDIENCES For the past five years, English filmmaker Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) has been working hard on Locksmith Animation’s first feature film, “Ron’s Gone Wrong.” The hilarious and heartwarming tale of a socially awkward middle schooler named Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, “Luca”) and his malfunctioning robot, Ron (voiced by Zach Galifianakis, “The Hangover”), the movie hits theaters on Oct. 22. Sunseeker caught up with Smith, who not only co-founded Locksmith Animation, but also executive produced, wrote and directed “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” to talk about the film and its important message.

RON’S GONE WRONG

ONLY IN THEATERS

Where did the idea for the story come from? The idea first stirred when I watched the Spike Jonze film, “Her.” I just thought we [Smith and her longtime friend Peter Caynham, who co-wrote “Ron’s Gone Wrong” with her] had to make a film like that for kids. I was very aware of my 4-year-old entering the world of iPads, etc., and not having any awareness of the bigger world, agenda or voices behind what she was watching. Pete and I both had the experience of seeing our kids grapple with friendship issues — that feeling we’ve all had as a kid, and adult, that everyone else at the party has friends to talk to except you. That pressure becomes so much more complicated when you add social media. Suddenly, you have this brilliant tool for meeting people you have things in common with, yet you end up worrying even more about being on the outside. So, we wanted to find a way to show, basically, an animated iPad that is sold as “your best friend out of the box,” and the B*Bot was born! What makes “Ron’s Gone Wrong” such a great back-to-school movie for kids to enjoy? One of the key images in the movie is Barney standing on the edge of the schoolyard, staring out at every other kid who appears to him confident and socially sorted (because they all have B*Bots). I think every kid has that experience at some point. But Ron changes all that for Barney because he teaches him he’s worthy of friendship and shows him that all the others are going through the same stuff.

It’s also just a heap of fun. It shows what happens when the socially awkward kid brings this crazy, unafraid, broken bot to school that just wants to rush around making friends with everyone. Without giving away too much, Ron triggers a huge chaotic bit of mad hilarity in the school in which every rule is broken — it’s every kid’s wish fulfilment!

Were you at all awkward in middle school like Barney? If so, would you have loved to have had something like a B*Bot by your side? Wasn’t everyone? It’s a nightmare of selfconsciousness! A B*Bot would have been awesome — a brilliant alternative to having to be funny and charismatic to other kids!

The movie has a great cast. What did the main actors bring to their respective roles? Jack is one of the most versatile voice actors I’ve ever worked with. He gives six different versions of every line, and he can make you cry in a heartbeat. Zach, meanwhile, is a comedy genius who totally got the helpful deadpan of Ron with just a hint of cheek! Ed Helms is a brilliant improviser. He’s so warm as Barney’s dad but also gave us reams of hilarious additional material and alternative lines that make his character so alive and real. Then there was Olivia Colman, dancing up and down to Bulgarian songs. They were such a lovely, generous cast to work with.

If you had one electronic device you’d consider “your best friend out of the box” today, what would it be? Gotta be my iPhone — is it possible to live without them?

SUNSEEKER

What message do you hope viewers take away from the film? Things may be tough today, but you will find friends. And they don’t have to be anything like you, or agree with you or like the same things as you. It will be more fun if they don’t — if they bicker and argue and laugh, like Pete and I do.

Vacations are all about making memories that will last a lifetime, and there’s no better way to do that when visiting Jacksonville than on a guided eco-tour with Amelia Island Kayak Excursions. Founded in 2013, the family-owned business has evolved over the years. At first, the tours consisted of the Bullington family taking friends and family members out on overnight kayaking trips, but now it has become one of Northeast Florida’s most acclaimed tour companies. Today, travelers can book 2-hour, 3-hour and 5-hour guided ecotours, as well as overnight excursions to some of Northern Florida and Southern Georgia’s most scenic, off-the-beaten-path destinations, including Lofton Creek, Cumberland Island, Suwannee River and Okefenokee Swamp.

“If there were any dumb trips, I would tell guests,” said tour guide Amber Bullington. “As guides, we would not want to regularly paddle in a boring place, much less bring our guests along!” Since the company offers tours in different ecosystems, the flora and fauna vary from waterway to waterway. Depending on the eco-tour booked, guests might see moss-laden oaks, sand dunes, manatees, alligators, dolphins and even wild horses roaming. Various self-propelled vessels are also available depending on the excursion, from traditional kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to Hobie Mirage kayaks for guests who would rather pedal than paddle.

guests will be paddling,” Bullington said. “We also have a variety of sizes, so we can accommodate a wide range of different heights and weights. The equipment that our guides use is the same quality that we provide to our guests.” Every eco-tour also includes the perfect keepsake — a complimentary digital photo album of the trip — so that guests can soak up their tranquil surroundings without worrying about getting the perfect photograph. ameliaislandkayak.com

The Hemingway Home and Museum

By Heather Turk

Ever since Ernest Hemingway penned such literary classics as “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” while living in Key West, the Florida city has been synonymous with the American author. Not only can visitors enjoy various experiences inspired by the legendary writer — including a tour of Papa’s Pilar Distillery, which was named after Hemingway and his fishing boat — but they can also drink and dine at Hemingway’s favorite hangout, Sloppy Joe’s, which was owned by his good friend and fishing companion, Joe Russell. Of course, the first place on any Hemingway fan’s must-see list while visiting Key

Established artists and rising talents at NSU Art Museum

Once considered one of South Florida’s best-kept secrets, word is getting out about Fort Lauderdale’s thriving art scene. The city is home to several notable galleries and museums, including what many consider to be its premier art museum: NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Located in downtown Fort Lauderdale’s vibrant Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, NSU Art Museum was founded in 1958 and became a part of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2008. The 83,000-square-foot building the museum is currently housed in opened in 1986 and was designed by renowned architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Inside the modern architectural landmark lies more than 25,000 square feet of exhibition space, as well as a 256seat auditorium, gift shop and café.

world’s largest collection of works by American modernist artist William J. Glackens. The museum also boasts highly regarded collections of Latin American art and contemporary art. This fall, the museum will have several limited-time exhibitions on view that guests won’t want to miss. These include “Iké Udé: Select Portraits” and “Thomas Bils: Still Cheaper Than Paying,” two of NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater’s favorite exhibitions. “I’m bedazzled by Iké Udé’s luminous, large-scale photographic self-portraits and intrigued by the way Miami artist Thomas Bils’ display of meticulous paintings on parking citations — which sell for the price of the fine — raise questions

regarding how we value art,” Clearwater told Sunseeker. Fashion aficionados will also love “The World of Anna Sui.” On display through Oct. 3, the retrospective exhibition features more than 100 looks from the accomplished New York fashion designer. Admission to NSU Art Museum is free on the first Thursday of every month, otherwise a nominal charge typically applies. nsuartmuseum.org

explore outdoors St Pete/Clearwater gives plenty of reasons to stay outside

By Teresa Bitler

Whether it’s kayaking, fishing or water activities, St. Pete/Clearwater has always embraced the outdoors. Now, with the new St. Pete Pier, Allegiant passengers have even more reason to spend the entire day in the sun when they visit the area.

TripAdvisor named St. Pete Beach the best beach in the U.S. 2021

SOFT, WHITE-SAND BEACHES St. Pete/Clearwater’s 35 miles of soft, sugarsand beaches rank among some of the nation’s best. In fact, TripAdvisor named St. Pete Beach the nation’s best beach in 2021 for its warm gulf waters, emerald-green tidal pools and sand that never gets hot. You can relax for hours near the water’s edge, then grab a drink at a local beachfront bar. Or, opt for a day at Clearwater Beach instead. Also a regular on TripAdvisor’s best beaches list, this beach packs the day with activity. Joggers skirt the waves in the morning, volleyballers compete in the mid-afternoon, and every evening, Pier 60 celebrates the sunset with live entertainment. After dark, Clearwater Beach becomes a favorite with diners looking to savor fresh seafood and the beach atmosphere. For a more laid back beach experience, you can’t beat Madeira Beach. Nicknamed “Mad Beach,” it features 2.5 miles of beach, shore fishing opportunities and family-friendly Johns Pass Village and Boardwalk with more than 100 shops and restaurants. WATERSPORTS AND MORE Active Allegiant passengers will find no shortage of things to do in St. Pete/ Clearwater. The area naturally specializes in watersports. You can rent a pontoon, jet ski through the bay or take a dolphin cruise. Traveling with kids? Book a pirate cruise with Captain Memo and turn them loose on the ship to hunt for treasure, play water games and dance. captainmemo.com To squeeze a workout in while appreciating the calm waters in the St. Pete/Clearwater area, try kayaking. You can rent kayaks without a reservation at Fort De Soto Park, the Dunedin Causeway and Honeymoon Island State Park. Or, take a ferry and rent a kayak at Caladesi Island State Park, where 3.5 miles of kayak trails snake through mangrove canals and over seagrass flats. Continued

Plan a day of fun at Clearwater Beach

While you can try your hand at kiteboarding and skimboarding, one of the fastest growing activities in the area is fishing. Charter a boat for a day off the coast, cast a line from the pier or wade into knee-deep water for everything from redfish to snook. ST. PETE PIER The city’s newest attraction is more than a pier jutting out into Tampa Bay — it’s 26 acres of entertainment, including places to dine, drink, shop, stroll, bike and more. Visitors can shop for souvenirs at the pier’s marketplace, fish from a dedicated area off the pier, play beach volleyball or launch a kayak or paddleboard into the bay. stpetepier.org Additionally, kids can cool off at the pier’s splash pad or burn off some energy at the nautical-themed Glazer Family Playground. Round out a family visit with a stop

at the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, where they can learn about the bay through hands-on activities, interactive displays, videos and touch tanks. tbwdiscoverycenter.org The pier showcases pieces by talented artists as well. The most notable is “Bending Arc,” a 76-foot-high, 428-foot-wide billowing net sculpture by Tampa Bay native Janet Echelman. Don’t miss the Bioswale, a grassy picnic area overlooking the North Basin. If walking the pier sounds too much like a workout, you can always take the tram. CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM When you want to get out of the sun but keep close to nature, head to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. One of St. Pete/Clearwater’s most popular attractions, the aquarium just completed a multi-million-dollar expansion that includes a new dolphin habitat for Winter and Hope, the stars of two “Dolphin Tale” movies, and their friends. While the dolphins are a big draw, you’ll also see sharks, otters, stingrays and sea turtles on a visit. The aquarium also offers 60-minute dolphin and wildlife tours of Clearwater Bay to encounter the animals in their natural habitats instead. cmaquarium.org

Photos by heidemariephoto.com

Known for its Caribbean cuisine with a Southern twist, the relaxed waterfront restaurant underwent some permanent changes last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the changes that got the most positive feedback from guests was deciding to serve the restaurant’s full lunch and dinner menus on its boardwalk overlooking Ainger Creek. Visitors can now enjoy signature dishes like the tasty St. Croix Cranberry Chicken Salad while watching fish and the occasional manatee swim by. With more people wanting to dine outdoors, Farlow’s also expanded its patio seating. Several enhancements were made to keep diners comfortable outside throughout the year, including adding misting fans and umbrellas for shade during the summer months and outdoor heaters when the weather gets cool. While finding heaters in the midst

of the pandemic proved to be a challenge, Farlow’s co-owner, Laurie Farlow, offered to buy guests dinner if they found a heater and brought it into the restaurant! For the first time ever, Farlow’s also began taking reservations by phone and processing orders online. Its delivery and to-go options became so popular, the restaurant now has its own delivery vehicle and designated curbside pickup parking spots. Farlow’s installed clear acrylic panels between each of its 12 indoor booths, too, and introduced

several new menu items, including a Pork Stuffed Cornbread appetizer. The restaurant has resumed having live music four nights a week as well, welcoming a variety of Trop Rock musicians. “It’s been the hardest year since we remodeled and reopened in 2015, but we’re as busy as we’ve ever been,” Farlow said. “While many of the changes were hard, they only made us stronger and better.” farlowsonthewater.com

AN ECO-FRIENDLY DESTINATION

Sustainable travel activities in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach

Given that Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach proclaims its “Best Side is Outside,” it should come as no surprise that the pristine destination along Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast is home to several sustainable businesses and attractions. That means travelers have plenty of ways to enjoy their stay without worrying about the carbon footprint their visit may leave behind. One of the best ways for eco-conscious visitors to explore the area is to reconnect with nature on one of Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach’s many eco-tours. For those who want to learn more about the destination while seeing some wildlife up close, Babcock Ranch Eco-Tours offers 90-minute Swamp Buggy Eco-Tours of the Babcock Ranch Preserve. As passengers travel through the historic Crescent B cattle ranch and past various Florida ecosystems, they’ll see a wealth of local wildlife, including wild turkeys, sandhill cranes, alligators and a herd of Florida Cracker cattle descended from the first cattle brought to the state in the 1500s. babcockranchecotours.com

Visitors can also get out onto the water on a guided eco-tour with Glass Bottom Rentals and paddle through the clear waters of Boca Grande in their own clear bottom kayak. Several tours are offered, including a 2-hour Sunset LED Night Paddle, that take paddlers out to the Boca Grande Sandbar looking for dolphins, manatees, sea stars and other marine life swimming nearby. Not only will guests leave the excursion with memories that will last a lifetime, but they’ll also learn some lessons on why it’s important to conserve our natural world. glassbottomrentals.com For those who prefer pedal power to paddle power, visitors can borrow a bicycle through TEAM Punta Gorda’s Free Bicycle Loaner Program (teampuntagorda.org) and go for a ride on the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail. Located along the historic Charlotte Harbor & Northern Railway easement, the 8.5-mile nature trail is a great place to look for red-shouldered hawks, mockingbirds, gopher tortoises, bobcats and other wildlife. Additionally, guests biking or walking the trail can see the Placida Bunk House. The only structure left in Charlotte County associated with the Charlotte Harbor & Northern Railway, the building once housed the railroad’s employees. charlottecountyfl.gov Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach also has several sustainable restaurants, like Perch 360 at the Wyvern Hotel. Best known for its 360-degree view of Punta Gorda, the rooftop eatery follows numerous sustainable practices — like having LED energy efficient lighting and sourcing its seafood from sustainable farms. The tapas-style restaurant even has its own rooftop garden, where it grows herbs like rosemary and mint to use in many of its dishes and handcrafted cocktails. Eco-warriors can dine at Perch 360 knowing they’re supporting a place, like many others in the area, that has made a pledge to sustainability. perch360.com

Pickleball’s popularity continues to grow in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach

Pickleball may have gotten its start on Bainbridge Island in 1965, but today, the game is one of the fastest growing sports in America — especially in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach. According to the USA Pickleball Association, pickleball was initially created by congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell to keep their families entertained when they couldn’t find a full set of rackets to play badminton with one summer day. Pritchard and Bell decided to improvise with what they had, and their families played on Pritchard’s badminton court with ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball instead. Over the weekend, players realized that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface, so the net was lowered from 60 inches (badminton height) to 36 inches. The following weekend — with the help of Barney McCallum, who was introduced to the game at Pritchard’s home — rules were created and pickleball was born. While there has been some debate as to how the game got its name — Pritchard’s wife claimed she called the game pickleball because the combination of different sports reminded her of “the pickle boat in

crew, where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats,” whereas McCallum said the game was named after the PicklePlex®’s outdoor courts are available Pritchards’ dog, for events and public play Pickles, who would run off with the ball — there’s no debate ment isn’t scheduled. FRONT ROW for THE FINAL FRONTIER

Adventures at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

For millennia, humans have gazed at the sky and wondered what else is out there. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is pulling back the starry curtain, giving curious earthlings a taste of adventure in outer space. The Visitor Complex is a journey through space and time, organized into Mission Zones grouped by chronological era. From zone to zone, guests travel from the birth of space exploration, through the present trips to the moon and Mars, and into the future. At Heroes & Legends, the Visitor Complex highlights the many important missions of the past and the brave people who manned them both in the air and on the ground. It’s home to the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, where heroic astronauts of the past are honored in a beautiful display reminiscent of a futuristic space ship deck. The extraordinary teams behind the scenes are also celebrated, thanks to exhibits like Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo. The Rocket Garden, nearby, even houses the 223-foot tall Saturn IB, which launched Apollo 7, the first crewed mission of the Apollo Program. The Garden is a gallery of monumental rockets, including new addition: The

ULA Delta Rocket, the same rocket that fostered the Global Positioning System (GPS) and enabled the exploration of Mars. Mission Zone Race to the Moon also features exhibits on the Apollo era, while Shuttle: A Ship Like No Other celebrates the the history, technology and impact of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. Space Shuttle Atlantis hovers in midflight at this Mission Zone, surrounded by over 60 interactive exhibits. Guests can climb aboard various simulators to launch into space, pilot a space craft, or experience anti-gravity inside the International Space Station. At NASA Now + Next, the Visitor Complex details what’s happening now in the field of Space Exploration. Here, Mission Status Briefing details current missions at NASA, operations at the Kennedy Space Center and launch activity at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. For lovers of theater and performance, a long lockdown and Zoom play reading parties have been tough on the spirit. This revival, which started in 1996, reinvigorated interest in the show, which saw its debut in 1975. “SIX” “Six” was originally supposed to have its opening night the day lockdown in New York was announced. But now, it can ascend to its glorious heights as intended, when Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ pop concert retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII finally debuts at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre for previews September 17, with an opening night scheduled for October 3. Each wife gets a song as they battle it out, testing who has the best track; but it’s also an ingenious take on history, gender and how those things are told through pop culture. BRUNCH, NOLA STYLE The best al fresco brunches in New Orleans

The patio at Café Amelia

But, it’s the atmosphere that really sets New Orleans’ brunches apart. Bricked courtyards and patios shaded by oak, magnolia and cypress trees, decorated with greenery and fountains make the ideal backdrop for a leisurely meal. CAFÉ AMELIE Brunch is such a big deal at Café Amelie that it’s served Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Even with so much time devoted to it, a brunch reservation is still needed or some extra time to wait in line for an open table. While there’s no bad seat in the house, a spot in the courtyard where fountains, shade trees, potted plants and lights strung overhead lend the space a charming, Southern feel.

CARES

Allegiant returns to making dreams come true

Allegiant is built around the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone. That philosophy is at the heart of our national partnership with Make-A-Wish®, the nonprofit organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children facing critical illnesses. Wishes not only help hope and joy to shine through the toughest of circumstances, but can also make a real difference in improving health outcomes for many children. About 77 percent of those wishes involve travel, and since 2012 Allegiant has provided free, nonstop flights for nearly 2,000 wish kids and their families to reach dream destinations across the country — from Florida and California theme parks to sports events, concerts and celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. We’ve also been honored to help design and host special wishes, including a visit to Allegiant’s west coast training center, where prospective pilot Eric flew a full-motion professional flight simulator, and where honorary flight attendant, 5 year-old SJ, handed out snacks to his fellow passengers during his wish trip to Orlando. When the pandemic delayed the fulfillment of wishes involving air travel, Allegiant team members stepped in to help fill the void. Pilots and flight attendants delivered messages of hope and gifts of encouragement to the homes of wish kids in Las Vegas. Administrative staff helped with a functional and beautiful bedroom makeover for 9 year-old wish kid Annay. And, across the country, hundreds

of team members participated in “virtual” walks and fundraisers during this most unusual year. This fall, our team will once again welcome wish kids on board Allegiant flights as they resume travel to fulfill their wishes. You, too, can help support MakeA-Wish and their important mission during your flight. For every purchase of a specially-branded Wingz Kids Snack Pack, Allegiant will donate $1 toward making even more wishes come true. Plane spotters should also keep an eye out for Allegiant’s one-of-a-kind Make-A-Wish livery aircraft — a symbol of our team’s dedication to this hopeful, life-changing cause, and to keeping travel accessible for all. Go to allegiant.com/make-wish for more information about Allegiant’s proud partnership with Make-A-Wish. Visit wish.org to find out how you can get involved with Make-A-Wish in your home community.

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats
