A BALANCE BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA The Mediterranean coast is lined with long sandy beaches, sand dunes and lagoons. Sometimes salt-water ponds, sometimes wetlands and sometimes a subtle exchange of fresh and salt water an intricate lacework of sand and pebbles. A soft landscape of quivering reed beds, saltwort, tufts of samphire in the Camargue, of river banks baked and cracked in the sun around the wetlands of Roussillon.

THE PLAIN RICH IN CULTURE This region’s soil is generous : vineyards in the valleys of the Aude, the Hérault, the Lez, the Orb and the Vidourle ; olive groves in the dry districts of the Gard and orchards around Beaucaire and Perpignan.

THE AROMAS OF THE GARRIGUE STING LIKE A BLAST OF THE MISTRAL WIND A stony desert dazzling in the light, this bare rock-strewn country is the symbol of the landscape of Languedoc. This white-hot landscape with its heady brew of garrigue plants releases an intense and aromatic perfume from the holmoak, box, Aleppo pine, cistus, juniper, rosemary, thyme, savoury and lavender.

A HIGH ENCIRCLING WALL The natural amphitheâtre of the destination Sud de France is completed with a series of mountain ranges : the Massif Central to the East, Montagne Noire and Corbières in the centre and the Pyrenees to the West. This high encircling wall is completed with the green landscape in the Aubrac and Margeride and dry and rocky ones in the Causses. Gorges, caves, cirques and canyons shape and carve out the jagged relief of certain landscapes.

LAND OF CULTURE AND HERITAGE Littering the landscape, traces of prehistoric times, a thousand and one wonders of Romanesque architecture, citadelles and fortresses go to make up a mosaic of history forming the character of the Languedoc people always ready to celebrate their festivals and traditions. Every visitor will find his own favourite castle or secret preference, something which makes his head swim and a desire to stay and contemplate. Since it is from your personal reaction to these places that your amazement will spring. Yes, all these places are incredible, grandiose, fantastic, unique, part of the landscape, dizzying, breath-taking… but all indescribable in their own way. What romantic reflex can encourage us to imagine history better within the walls of the region’s chateaux than anywhere else? It is because these buildings bear witness to passing time ; they may only represent that : the passing of time.

TASTES OF THE SOUTH The more you look, the more there is to do, and it is at the food table that the Destination Sud de France awaits you to reveal all of its talent. That of a cuisine characterised by the tastes of the South and complemented by generous and honest wines. Gourmet dinner tables, hotels of character, charming residences: the best addresses are waiting for you.
