RED

CALEB MARSHALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Sudbury Theatre Centre’s RED by John Logan. Not only is this elegantly-crafted drama a multi-Tony Award-winning Broadway hit, it is, for my money, the single best two-hander written for the stage in recent memory. For me, this production brings with it both a level of comfort and familiarity, having directed it last season at Theatre New Brunswick, and a refreshing approach with our STC production featuring a new cast exploring the material for the first time. Producing a play about the creative process is not without a sense of irony, but it has been an exhilarating process indeed and I hope you will find your experience equally exhilarating. As our current season draws nearer to its conclusion, we hope your anticipation is building for our upcoming 2015.2016 Season which we will unveil on April 16. It is the first I have crafted for STC, filled with desire, delight, and deception, rich in Canadian content, new initiatives, and world premieres. I cannot wait to share it with you. Following RED, we close out the mainstage season with Steve Gallucio’s In Piazza San Domenico. Although it’s a farce of Italian proportions, don’t let the title fool you; it is presented in English. I’m also proud to say that over half of its large cast either resides or is returning to Sudbury. I’m sure you’ll recognize their names and their talents.

The new Artistic Director for Sudbury Theatre Centre, New Brunswick native Caleb Marshall spent the last five seasons as the Artistic Producer for Theatre New Brunswick where he launched TNB New Voices Opening Acts, TNB Next Stage Studio Branch, TNB Extras Reading and Presents series. He produced over 50 projects while at TNB, saw the highest percentage of NB theatre artists on stage in the companies 48 year history, oversaw the purchase of their building and the completion of an in-house studio theatre.

On behalf of the company, I’d like to thank our many partners and patrons for their support and, of course you, our beloved audience.

Prior to coming to Theatre New Brunswick, Caleb served as an Education Practitioner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre as well as resident director for their UK/European tour of Romeo & Juliet. He holds a BFA Honors in Acting from York University, an MFA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University London (UK) and trained with The Stratford Festival’s Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, Moscow’s GITIS Academy and on an International Artist Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Caleb has premiered roles for the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, The Blyth Festival, The Stratford Festival and the Old Vic in London. He has also taught workshops at festivals in Poland and Germany as well as teaching at St. Thomas and Dalhousie Universities.

Join us in the lounge following the performance to engage in a dialog about the work you have seen. We also invite you to share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter, and feel free to contact me personally with your ideas for STC’s future. This is your theatre. Now, we invite you to decide for yourself: what do you see? Enjoy John Logan’s RED.

Caleb is the chair of the Regional Theatres Caucus for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and recently hosted PACTCON2014 in Fredericton. He has received the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award and was recognized by the New Brunswick Arts Board with an Excellence Award in the Arts. Select writing credits include three installments of Christmas @ theplayhouse (Fredericton Playhouse), Nights Below Station Street (NBActs, Eliot Haze Playwright Development Award), R&J (Toronto Fringe, Toronto Sun Fringe “Hot Pick”) Somme Letters Home (Atlantic Fringe/George Brown Theatre School/YPT). He also adapted Hockey Dreams for the stage with David Adams Richards and a new adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street with Erin Keating.

He recently announced Theatre New Brunswick’s first ever ‘All New Brunswick Professional season,’ which will include his new Christmas Carol musical with composer Michael Doherty. RED

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

CALEB MARSHALL

RED is an acclaimed new play winning the 2010 Tony award and sweeping across North America – a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work. We’ve tried to build an on-stage world that acts as a kind of metaphor for the artist’s journey – in part a very realistic studio to serve a production that involves the messiness of creation, the mixing of pigments and applying of paint, the clutter of all the tools necessary, yet the walls of the studio are cut off in an expressionistic way, a hint of the abstract as the real studio gives way to the crisp clarity of the final product – the art hanging above, existing in its own time and space.

Rarely on our stage do we get to create art about art – to give the audience a peek behind the curtain into the creative process while also reexamining and experimenting with our own process of creation.

RED 13

We certainly hope this production will appeal to art lovers and also encourage crossover between our theatre and the visual arts community, but it is a play for anyone who has ever dreamed of creating, anyone who ever felt they outgrew a teacher’s teachings, anyone who ever looked for meaning in the things they see. We will be very interested to know, “What do you see?” –Caleb Marshall

STC 2014.2015 SEASON

RED

By JOHN LOGAN Directed by CALEB MARSHALL RED premiered at The Donmar Warehouse Theatre, London on December 3, 2009, Michael Grandame, Artistic Director. Original Broadway production produced by Arielle Tepper Madover, Stephanie P. McClellan, Matthew Byam Shaw, Neal Street Productions, Fox Theatricals, Ruth Hendel/Barbara Whitman, Philip Hagemann/Murray Rosenthal and The Donmar Warehouse. Likeness of the Rothko Seagram mural panels used with permission. Š 1998 Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. RED is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

THE ARTIST Marcus Rothkowitz was born on 25 September 1903 in Dvinsk, Russia. Having emigrated with his family to the United States in 1913, and changed his name to Mark Rothko nearly three decades later, he went on to become one of the most influential American artists of the 20th Century. He remains forever associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement; his paintings, with their shimmering, rectangular fields of colour, are instantly recognizable. He was diagnosed with an aneurism and suffered severe depression. Rothko committed suicide in New York on 25 February 1970, aged sixty-six. A highly-educated man, Rothko was a true intellectual. He had a passion for music, literature and philosophy, in particular the work of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Regarded by many friends as a difficult, temperamental man, Rothko was also known to be loving and affectionate towards his family.

Video and/or audio recording of this performance by any means whatsoever is strictly prohibited. STC is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and operates within the jurisdiction of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. STC serves as the chair of the Regional Theatres Caucus for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). STC 2014.2015 SEASON

IN THE LOBBY STC is delighted to welcome several local visual artists into our specially furnished lobby studio to create work during the run of RED. We hope this provides a compliment to the play by giving you, the audience, a taste of the artists’ processes. We invite you to engage with the artists about their work following the production and encourage you to experience the wealth of visual art being created in our city at every opportunity. The artwork now being exhibited in the STC lobby was completed by visual arts students from four Sudbury high schools: Lockerby Composite School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Saint Charles College, and Sudbury Secondary School. RED tells the story of passionate Russian-American artist, Mark Rothko, and the artwork on display was therefore inspired by his life, themes, and techniques. Like Rothko, these large works focus on the effects of colour relationships on the viewer and try to express some of the big emotions, such as “tragedy, ecstasy and doom”. STC extends a heartfelt thank you to these talented students and their teachers for partnering with us on this inspiring collaboration.
