SUDBURY THEATRE CENTRE 2014.2015 SEASON
MEET OUR NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CALEB MARSHALL It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you, the Sudbury community. I have already been given a tremendous welcome and been made to feel very much at home. Thank you and I look forward to getting to know you! This is your theatre. I believe an Artistic Director should cultivate a vision for the company in partnership with the community. I’d like to hear from you what you feel STC should be, and how we can best represent you in the stories we tell, the themes we explore and the escape we embrace. A season of theatre should provide you with a bit of everything: laughter, tears, a chance to forget yourself; and should provoke dialogue about things most important to you.

A regional theatre has two responsibilities: to not only bring you the best work and talent from across the country but to also celebrate the talent and develop the stories in its own backyard. Sudbury has a rich past and I’m sure there are plenty of stories to mine; the stories that speak uniquely to us as a community, how we see ourselves, our triumphs and our challenges. Please share them with me. This coming season is indeed a “colourful” one, with plays representing people of all ages and various cultural backgrounds in our community. It’s a season with nostalgia, humour and heart as we bring to life The Rocky Horror Show and Miracle on 34th Street. It’s a bold season that will fill us with empathy and provoke controversial discussion guiding us together through some challenging issues we are facing in Another Home Invasion and Mourning Dove. It’s a celebration of our diversity and the great humour that can come when we realize, through A Brimful of Asha and In Piazza San Domenico, that none of us is that different despite our backgrounds. Great theatre is an exploration of the human spirit that brings us all together. We share something special when we sit together in that theatre and Red will give us an insight into the power and struggle of the creative spirit. Thank you to our sponsors, funders and patrons – I’m very excited to take this journey with you.

MUSIC, LYRICS & BOOK BY RICHARD O’BRIEN 25 SEP to 18 OCT 2014 The Rocky Horror Show is a cultural icon. The monstrously-fabulous musical that inspired the cult classic film, it’s hard to find a person who can’t sing along to the “Time Warp”. One dark and stormy night, the newly-engaged Brad and Janet happen on the castle of Doctor Frank N. Furter who believes he has discovered the secret of life. Will the muscular science experiment “Rocky Horror” live forever? To find out, it’s just a jump to the (stage) left!

Life after independent living.
BY JOAN McLEOD 23 OCT to 1 NOV 2014 This riveting and often comic story mirrors our lives, both current and future. The feisty, lonely senior Jean and her husband Alec wish to move into a long-term care facility for couples. Alec’s dementia has progressed, leaving Jean in charge. One night, she innocently invites a stranger into their home, a move that has frightening consequences. Completely absorbing and engaging, Jean will work her way into your heart.

21 NOV to 14 DEC 2014
Can one nice old man with whiskers change the lives of a world-weary mother, her little girl and all of New York City? This holiday classic is as relevant and meaningful as ever; its story of triumph of faith over greed and goodwill over commercialism has enchanted us for over 65 years. Full of “joy and love and all the other intangibles this show is what we want Christmas to really mean. Santa Claus is coming to town... but this year, he has to prove it.

BY EMIL SHER 22 JAN to 1 FEB 2015 “Life” and “living” are two very different things. This theme runs through the core of Mourning Dove as Doug and Sandra must come to terms with their daughter Tina’s impending operation – one of many to come. Traveling the gamut from playful to heartbreaking, Mourning Dove touches the soul and challenges the mind. Inspired by the true story of Saskatchewan farmer Robert Latimer, both sides of a life-anddeath issue are passionately represented.

You don’t choose your family. Why choose your wife?
WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY RAVI JAIN 24 FEB to 1 MAR 2015 Spend an evening with Canadian-born Ravi Jain and his real-life, Indian-born mother Asha. Ravi revels in the freedoms and possibilities Canada has to offer while his parents are traditionalists, expecting him to honour his heritage. The audience is taken on an comic adventure chronicling Ravi’s 2007 trip to India and his parent’s wife shopping. A thought-provoking generational and cultural clash that has moved audiences to laughter across the nation... served with samosas.

At the height of his fame, they changed the game.
BY JOHN LOGAN 26 MAR to 4 APR 2015 The celebrated bad boy of the art world, Mark Rothko, is immersed in the biggest commission in the history of modern art. Enter his new assistant, Ken, whose only goal seems to be to unsettle and challenge Rothko. Together, they are oil and water. An intense drama filled with passionate debates and fierce creative clashes, Red is a visceral study of art through the fiery eyes of two artists of different generations. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award, it’s a streak of brilliance as fresh as wet paint.

A farce of Italian proportions.
sponsored by
BY STEVE GALLUCCIO 23 APR to 15 MAY 2015 This fast-paced comedy of errors makes everyone wish they were Italian. It’s 1952 in Naples, Italy, and Carmelina has just fainted in the same piazza where she saw her fiancé Guido kissing a girl of questionable reputation. She calls off the engagement, stirring up comic trouble for a host of people. To spite Guido, Carmelina attempts to catch the eye of the homeliest mamma’s boy in town. It’s a downright crowd pleaser – a comedy for the masses.
