MOURNING DOVE

CALEB MARSHALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Happy New Year and welcome to the second half of the 2014.2015 Season. I hope you enjoyed some relaxing time with family and friends over the holidays. Mourning Dove is not without challenge. It centres on a theme that is at once both incredibly topical, and incredibly divisive. You might think this time of year is not ideal for exploring such controversial content. It’s cold and snowy, the days are short, and sunlight is scarce. But perhaps this is actually the perfect time to delve into this realm. Many of us have just spent the holidays with our families. It’s a unique time as, in any given year, we may be welcoming new relatives or remembering those we’ve lost. In many ways too, the cold of winter mirrors the struggle a family like Doug and Sandra faces: the sense of being trapped, isolated, constricted, and aching. Ultimately, we all form strong opinions on any controversial issue, but it’s usually from a distance. The power of theatre is that it allows us to get closer. It allows us to experience Doug and Tina’s painful struggle more personally and viscerally and maybe, just maybe, it provides us with newfound perspective and insight as we’re drawn into the intimacy of their world and place ourselves in their position.

The new Artistic Director for Sudbury Theatre Centre, New Brunswick native Caleb Marshall spent the last five seasons as the Artistic Producer for Theatre New Brunswick where he launched TNB New Voices Opening Acts, TNB Next Stage Studio Branch, TNB Extras Reading and Presents series. He produced over 50 projects while at TNB, saw the highest percentage of NB theatre artists on stage in the companies 48 year history, oversaw the purchase of their building and the completion of an in-house studio theatre.

Thank you for braving the elements and considering Emil Sher’s Mourning Dove. It is a wonderful piece and director Matthew Thomas Walker and company have done it a great service. I hope the play lingers with you as you leave the theatre and leads to engaging discussion.

Prior to coming to Theatre New Brunswick, Caleb served as an Education Practitioner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre as well as resident director for their UK/European tour of Romeo & Juliet. He holds a BFA Honors in Acting from York University, an MFA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University London (UK) and trained with The Stratford Festival’s Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, Moscow’s GITIS Academy and on an International Artist Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Caleb has premiered roles for the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, The Blyth Festival, The Stratford Festival and the Old Vic in London. He has also taught workshops at festivals in Poland and Germany as well as teaching at St. Thomas and Dalhousie Universities.

Coming up at the end of February, we warm things up a bit with the Canadian hit A Brimful of Asha, written, directed, and performed by Ravi Jain alongside is his real-life mother. It’s a hilarious clash of cultures... served with samosas. We hope you’ll join us for that limited engagement. As always, we love to hear from you, our beloved audience. Do share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to contact me personally with your ideas for STC’s future. This is your theatre, after all.

Caleb is the chair of the Regional Theatres Caucus for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and recently hosted PACTCON2014 in Fredericton. He has received the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award and was recognized by the New Brunswick Arts Board with an Excellence Award in the Arts.

On behalf of the STC Family, I’d like to thank our many partners and patrons for their support and look forward to getting to know you all. Now enjoy this powerful production that begs the question: how far would you go for your child?

Select writing credits include three installments of Christmas @ theplayhouse (Fredericton Playhouse), Nights Below Station Street (NBActs, Eliot Haze Playwright Development Award), R&J (Toronto Fringe, Toronto Sun Fringe “Hot Pick”) Somme Letters Home (Atlantic Fringe/George Brown Theatre School/YPT). He also adapted Hockey Dreams for the stage with David Adams Richards and a new adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street with Erin Keating.

Caleb Marshall Artistic Director ad@sudburytheatre.on.ca

He recently announced Theatre New Brunswick’s first ever ‘All New Brunswick Professional season,’ which will include his new Christmas Carol musical with composer Michael Doherty. MOURNING DOVE

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

EMIL SHER Emil’s stage works for the young and the once-were-young include Sanctuary, Bluenose, Derailed and adaptations of Hana’s Suitcase and Edward the ‘Crazy Man’. He is delighted that Mourning Dove, which has been staged across the country since its 2005 premiere, has found a home at Sudbury Theatre Centre. His adaptation of Ian Brown’s The Boy in the Moon premiered last fall at Ottawa’s GCTC. Works-in-progress include the book and lyrics for a stage musical of Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater; Omega, a play about graffiti art Emil is developing as playwright-inresidence at Roseneath Theatre; and The Book of Ashes, inspired by the true story of an Iraqi librarian who saved tens of thousands of books in the midst of war. Emil wrote the narrative for Ballet Jorgen’s A World to Shake and created Breadbox Theatre to introduce school-age children to live drama. A laureate of the 2014 K.M. Hunter Artist Award in Literature, Emil’s first novel for young readers will be published by Scholastic this fall. For more information, please visit emilsher.com.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

MATTHEW THOMAS WALKER One of the many powers of the theatre is its ability to transport us into the extraordinary circumstances of others. It is a collective ritual among artists and audience where we can imagine how we might react in another person’s situation. The extraordinary circumstances represented in this play are ones that have been at the centre of debate throughout our country (and beyond) for over 20 years since the death of Tracy Latimer. With his beautiful play, Emil Sher has offered us a new look. Through his fictional retelling we are able to imagine ourselves inside the private lives of those closest to the heart of the debate. Whatever side you sit on, we hope this piece offers new insights for you the way it has for us.

MOURNING DOVE By EMIL SHER Directed by MATTHEW THOMAS WALKER

Mourning Dove is inspired by a true story but it is not based on it. This is not a matter of splitting hairs. Were the play based on real events, it would mean following a chronology of actual events and offering up details and facts, perhaps even some statistics for good measure. All of this can be compelling on stage but it is not the story I wanted to tell. I was drawn to a grey zone where cold facts are overshadowed by the passion, the uncertainties, the confusion and convictions that fuel the choices we make and shape the relationships that shape us. I didn’t want to create a pamphlet in Mourning Dove but a play, a world where fictional characters confront hard truths. Nor did I see any value in creating a world that presents a moral judgment. The world in which Doug, Sandra, Tina and Keith live is too complex for fast-and-easy, paint-by-number answers. When we pigeon-hole individuals into boxes and reduce them to monochromatic stick figures we rob them of the colours and hues that define us. Ours is not a black-and-white world, and in Mourning Dove I set out to create a group portrait of individuals whose colours are not fixed. Mix two colours and you get a third. A simple drop, like a single thought, can change things, sometimes irrevocably. And so I consider Mourning Dove to be part of a wider conversation we have with each other and with ourselves, recognizing the words we share as drops that can change whatever they touch in small, subtle and, sometimes, significant ways. —Emil Sher

Originally produced by the Great Canadain Theatre Company, Ottawa, February 2005. LOBBY ARTIST EDWARD W. TATE Edward W. Tate was born in Toronto and has lived in Sudbury since 1969. Over the years, he has made numerous contributions to the promotion, appreciation and development of Sudbury’s arts community as an art educator at the Ministry of Education (now retired), as an artist, and through community organizations such as the Sudbury Arts Council. As an artist, he has worked in various media, most recently in oil and acrylic painting. In this exhibition, Edward sought to pay homage to the Group of Seven artists through an exploration of a mixed medium of painting and textured surfaces. Inspiration from the Group is reflected both in colour choice and the use of 8 x10-inch panels similar to those used by the Group of Seven members in their field studies. A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease several years ago has not slowed Edward’s artistic activity. Proceeds from the sale of his works will go to the local Parkinson’s Support Group.
