THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

CALEB MARSHALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the debut production of our Colourful New 2014.2015 Season, and my first as your new Artistic Director. Since my arrival, I have received the warmest of welcomes and already find myself completely enamored of my adopted community and new home. I look forward to getting to know you all as we embark on STC’s 43rd season together. What better way to launch a new chapter of the company’s vibrant history than with a cultural icon of monstrous proportions that is The Rocky Horror Show. Whether you’re a card-carrying member of the cult or a “Rocky Virgin”, we dare you not to get hooked on this Time Warp phenomenon. We hope you enjoy the production and encourage you to share your thoughts on our Facebook page or on Twitter. This is your theatre and I believe an Artistic Director should cultivate a vision for the company in partnership with the community. I want to hear from you, the people, what you feel STC should be and how we can best represent you in the stories we tell, the themes we explore, and the escape we embrace when we go to the theatre.

Recently announced as the new Artistic Director for Sudbury Theatre Centre, New Brunswick native Caleb Marshall spent the last five seasons as the Artistic Producer for Theatre New Brunswick where he launched TNB New Voices Opening Acts, TNB Next Stage Studio Branch, TNB Extras Reading and Presents series. He produced over 50 projects while at TNB, saw the highest percentage of NB theatre artists on stage in the companies 48 year history, oversaw the purchase of their building and the completion of an in-house studio theatre.

Please share your thoughts with me. Let’s create a dialogue between the art and the audience and, together, we ‘ll carry STC into its next act.

Prior to coming to Theatre New Brunswick, Caleb served as an Education Practitioner at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre as well as resident director for their UK/European tour of Romeo & Juliet. He holds a BFA Honors in Acting from York University, an MFA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University London (UK) and trained with The Stratford Festival’s Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, Moscow’s GITIS Academy and on an International Artist Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Caleb has premiered roles for the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, The Blyth Festival, The Stratford Festival and the Old Vic in London. He has also taught workshops at festivals in Poland and Germany as well as teaching at St. Thomas and Dalhousie Universities.

With our next production, Another Home Invasion, we shift gears into a story about life’s one true inevitability: growing old. Joan McLeod’s one-woman tour-de-force is riveting and often comic, and its feisty character Jean will certainly work her way into your hearts. We hope you’ll join us. On behalf of the STC Family, I’d thank to thank our many partners and patrons and , of course, you our cherished audience. I’m very excited to take this journey with you.

Caleb is the chair of the Regional Theatres Caucus for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and recently hosted PACTCON2014 in Fredericton. He has received the Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award and was recognized by the New Brunswick Arts Board with an Excellence Award in the Arts.

Now, come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab!

Select writing credits include three installments of Christmas @ theplayhouse (Fredericton Playhouse), Nights Below Station Street (NBActs, Eliot Haze Playwright Development Award), R&J (Toronto Fringe, Toronto Sun Fringe “Hot Pick”) Somme Letters Home (Atlantic Fringe/George Brown Theatre School/YPT). He also adapted Hockey Dreams for the stage with David Adams Richards and a new adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR The musical, written by Richard O’Brien, was intended to be a fun, fringe theatre event at the Royal Court Theatre in London. It quickly gained a loyal following and Hollywood came knocking! In 1974 it was turned into a movie starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meatloaf and Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff. Shortly after its release, audience participation began to have a major impact on the movie experience, remaining one of the defining features of The Rocky Horror Show. Don’t worry if you’re a Rocky “virgin”; you’ll recognize many hits from The Time Warp to Sweet Transvestite. Feel free to shout out responses but please save your toast, wieners and water pistols for the movie theatre experience. And if you suddenly feel the urge to sing along or dance like you’re at a rock concert, then you’re no longer a Rocky “virgin”.

Welcome to the Rocky Horror Show! Although it’s been 40 years since its debut, Rocky remains a cult classic, attracting new audiences every year. The script is a clever send up of science fiction and B rated horror movies complete with a Frankenstein-like birth, laser guns, blood and gore.

Now sit back relax and enjoy the show. I see you shiver with antici... (say it, say it!)... pation! Kelly Straughan, Director

LOBBY ARTIST JULIE VENNE COURTEMANCHE Julie Venne Courtemanche finds her roots on the shores of the French River in northern Ontario. A life-long painter who specializes in acrylic and water colors, Julie has taught visual and media arts at College Notre Dame for the last 25 years. An award-winning artist, she was honored with the People’s Choice Award at the 2013 RBC Dominion Art Impact juried show for her work Mother Earth. In 2011, her piece entitled Sun Worshippers was selected to be on permanent display in the atrium of the Vale Living With Lakes Centre. Artists on Elgin hosted her most recent exhibit, Divine Feminine. As an artist, Julie believes that visual art is truly meaningful when it awakens a new perspective, inspires a reflective moment or evokes an unexpected emotion in both the artist and the observer. The creative experience connects people to the spark of the divine that is within us all. When artists tap into their creative spirit, they reveal the highest expression of who they are. Artwork, a deep personal journey, is the manifestation of that experience. www.JulieCourtemanche.com THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

RICHARD O’BRIEN Music, Lyrics and Book Richard O’Brien is a British-New Zealand writer, actor, television presenter and theatre performer. He is best known for writing the cult musical The Rocky Horror Show and for his role in presenting the popular TV show The Crystal Maze. The Rocky Horror Show opened at the Theatre Upstairs in June 1973. Within weeks it had become the cult show to see in London theatre, moving from the Royal Court to a nearby venue the Pheasantry in the King’s Road, then to the Classic Cinema and eventually into the West End at the Comedy Theatre. After seeing the second night’s performance in the Theatre Upstairs, Jonathan King produced the original cast soundtrack in just over 48 hours during an off stage weekend and rushed it out on his UK Records label. The stage show has been in almost continuous production. In addition to writing The Rocky Horror Show, O’Brien also co-wrote the screenplay of the 1975 film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and appeared in the film as the character Riff Raff. The cinematic version, which has been in continuous release, is one of the best known and most ardently followed cult films of all time.

ABOUT THE PLAY The Rocky Horror Show is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s. The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a muscle man named Rocky Horror. Produced and directed by Australian Jim Sharman, the original London production of the musical premiered at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) before moving to several other locations, running for a total of 2,960 performances and winning the 1973 Evening Standard Award for Best Musical. Its 1974 debut in the US in Los Angeles had a successful nine month run but its 1975 Broadway debut lasted only three previews and 45 showings despite gaining a Tony nomination and three Drama Desk nominations. Various international productions have since spanned across six continents as well as West End and Broadway revivals and eight UK tours.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW 11

The musical has since developed a cult following and was ranked eighth in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the “Nation’s Number One Essential Musicals”. As an out-of-work actor, Richard O’Brien wrote The Rocky Horror Show to keep himself busy on winter evenings. Since his youth, O’Brien had developed a passion for science fiction and B horror movies; he wanted to combine elements of the unintentional humour of B horror movies, portentous dialogue of schlock-horror, Steve Reeves muscle flicks and fifties rock and roll into The Rocky Horror Show. After two previews, the show premiered at the Royal Court’s 63-seat Theatre Upstairs on 19 June 1973 and ran until 20 July 1973. The cast included Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, Julie Covington and Richard O’Brien, who made the production, which was all-out camp, a creative triumph and a critical and commercial success.

The Natural Way

At ChemDry of the North, we use a safe, non-toxic product called THE NATURAL速. It contains no soaps, detergents or surfactants, and it leaves no residue to attract dirt. We use less water than other cleaning methods, so your carpets will be dry in about two hours. Our process of Hot Carbonated Extraction uses bubbles to lift dirt to the surface for easier removal.

We specialize in cleaning wool and Oriental area rugs. Stubborn pet stains are easily removed with our product called P.U.R.T.速 (Pet Urine Removal Treatment). We also clean upholstery, leather and mattresses. Ask us about our competitive commercial rates.
