the man behind me An intimate view of the man behind Dr. Yolanda Jerry, The Empowerment Advocate Tell us about who your father was. My father, Willie J. Jones, was born and raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was a devoted husband and father to his children. He and my mother shared 44 years of marriage until his death. My father enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, watching football (loved his Dallas Cowboys), playing spades, fishing, bowling, reading, and watching movies and TV. He was

always smiling and a very likable guy. He loved his father, mother, brothers, and family. He enjoyed helping cook for family holidays and gatherings. Whether you knew him as “Daddy”, “Uncle Will”, “Paw Paw” or “Big Willie”, he was loved and adored by many, and we knew he was never short on words in conversation. To me, my father was a protector, a teacher, a prayer warrior, a leader, a supporter of me and those he loved, and most of all, my biggest cheerleader and hero. My father was full of wisdom and a true Man of God.

What type of influence did your father have on you throughout the years? The influence my father had on me was great, and everything he instilled in me I carry on with me today. Was he the perfect father? He had challenges just as we all do in this life, but in my eyes, he was still the perfect father. My father had some phenomenal qualities about him that I am currently doing my best to exemplify as a mother in my daughter’s life or to other children I may be a mother figure. Outside of what I mentioned earlier, let me share a few more qualities of my father with you. He was… DEPENDABLE & INVOLVED Was he there 100%? No, but I’d give him 90% for sure. My dad was there for me through my good and bad times in life. All I had to do was show up at the house or pick up the phone. If I needed something and he didn’t have it, he found a way to get it. If I needed prayer, he had me. As a child and as an adult, to be honest, I can’t recall many times when I needed his support, and he wasn’t there. COMPASSIONATE Compassion means “to suffer together". Whenever I was going through some of the toughest times in my life, he was there and was motivated to help relieve my suffering. My father had a heart of compassion like Jesus. VALUED MY MOTHER He showed so much love and respect for my mother, even with all her imperfections. Although my mother never graduated from high school, he never made her feel like she couldn’t achieve or do anything great. He appreciated and valued the gifts she did have as a mother and wife. He would support the things she had desired in her heart and always found a way to support her and make it happen for her. VERBALLY EXPRESSIVE My father was tough but fair. Yes, there were even times when I felt those scoldings were harsh, but as an adult, I see he was that way for a reason. He was very clear about the rules and expectations of us, whether we were in the house as kids or even as adults. No matter what, he always expressed his love for his family. The mere act of saying, “I LOVE YOU,” was a constant in our household.

HONEST He taught and lived by the values of honesty and integrity. He would always tell us, “Honesty is the best policy." That means that telling the truth is better than lying, even when it is hard to do. He would also say, “It’s harder to keep up with lies because you must remember what lie you told, and eventually the truth will come out." So, it’s much easier, to be honest, so your conscience would be clear, and the truth would set you free. PROVIDER I remember as a child, there were times when the bills were paid but there would be no money left to buy groceries. My dad would go out fishing and/or crabbing so we would have food to eat. He’d bring that fish home and my mom would scale, gut, fillet, clean, and fry that fish. We’d have fish and rice often, but hey, we were fed. As an adult, I remember going through my divorce. My dad would just mail me money so I could take care of my responsibilities as a mother until I was able to get back on my feet. There are so many other ways he provided, but these are what I remember most. JOYFUL No matter what my dad was dealing with or what he went through, he still had joy in his heart and was always smiling. He also loved to dance and listen to music. My mom wasn’t the one to dance often, so she would always tell me, “Yolanda, go dance with your daddy.” Well, let me tell you

something. My father and I were always the life of the party when I was a kid and even as an adult. I still listen to all the old-school music he loves and reminisce about all the dances we had together. How important is it for a male contribute to the success of women?

ally

to

Women need male allies because God's highest intent is for us to flourish together. When men respect and value women as equal partners, the partnership energy is a valuable asset. Today's society has bred us all to be highly competitive against one another. Still, true allies understand and have no problem walking in a way that complements them. My prayer is that women will begin to allow godly and positive men into their spaces while seeking healthy interaction that will produce fruit that God will receive and distribute to those in need of kingdom standards. What role has your father played in your success? My father has played a huge role in my success. The bible scripture, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (KJV). Everything he taught and guided me through as a child had played a huge role. Learning how to manage my money, knowing how to protect and defend myself, taught me to never give up, and how to hustle when I needed to legally. But on a serious note,

he was the one who always encouraged me to go after my dreams and pushed me to accomplish the goals I had in life. I remember in his last days on earth, I was about to back out of a book anthology and his words to me were, “Do not stop what you wanted to do before I got sick." No matter what happens, I want you to follow your passion. I will be around.” Little did I know, my father would pass away a couple of days later. My military retirement, all the books I’ve written, my business YJ Empowerment Solutions LLC, my advocacy work, serving in ministry, etc. are attributed to the positive influence my father had on my life. I kept going because he never gave up on me. The things he desired to do and never had the opportunity to accomplish, I also made happen in my own life, and it’s my way to honor my father. So, every time you see my success, know that my dad played a big role in it happening and it’s his success too! What is the one thing your father instilled in you that you still follow? The one thing my father instilled in me is the Word of God. At an early age, he would read to me because, as a child, I was always curious about what he was always reading in that same book. Although it wasn’t until my early adult years when I gave my life to Christ, my dad still covered me. Now I’m very intentional in keeping my relationship with God. The best way to conquer the enemy every day is to seek God and pray. When we specifically ask God to provide us with His wisdom in our situation, he will guide us. God loves us and wants us to succeed. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” My father, Wille J. Jones, was and still is a great man whom I hold in my heart, and I’ll always use everything he’s instilled in me. My father, Willie, is truly loved and missed. May he continue to rest in God’s care.

Meshell’s Success Misnomer #1 — There is no can’t. There are an infinite number of ways to get your desired result. Let’s get right down to it. The reason you struggle is not because of a lack of resources. But instead, it is your beliefs that are limiting our ability to activate your resourcefulness. There is NO ONE telling you… "You can’t,". It is what you have been saying to yourself for too long, and now you believe it. It’s these negative thoughts and selftalk, that you can’t seem to get a hold of, bringing your drive and determination to a screeching halt. And all that’s left… the seeds of dreams deferred and disappointing thoughts that unchecked harvest the excuses and alibis of why you can’t or why you’re not ready. C – Conditioning A – Accepts N – Negative T – Truths You see, "can’t" is a symbol of your disbelief in your abilities. What has happened, over time, is a deep-rooted distrust of yourself. This brings forth behaviors of minimal effort followed by endless discussions of why it won’t work. Still not sure if what I’m saying is true? (Don’t believe me?) Here is an activity to demonstrate the power of your negative and recurring thoughts. Decide to do one activity that makes you feel uncomfortable today. Write it down and tell someone who will hold you accountable. Now, I want you to capture (write or voice memo) all the thoughts you have, throughout the day, about the impending uncomfortable activity. Here are some questions to help you track your thoughts.

✓ Are my thoughts positive or negative? ✓ Do I believe what I’m thinking? ✓ Are these thoughts helping me? ✓ What am I imagining about the activity? ✓ Is my imagination positive or negative?

What you will discover is that what you are telling yourself is either helping or hurting you. And either way, there is always room to grow and improve. To have the career and life you desire demands aligning your thoughts to empower you to create and deliver possibilities. What do I mean by possibility? It is your belief in yourself to create and direct your thoughts toward a favorable outcome for all involved. This is why top performers are exceptional. They work from the inside out. They believe first and foremost in themselves and their abilities before engaging in business or selling.

by Meshell Baker Isn’t it amazing, the power of words?! There are limitless ways to discover your answers and solutions as well as an endless abundance of opportunity and it all begins when you believe you can. People who do incredible and amazing things, those who defy the odds and achieve greatness do so despite their humble beginnings, upbringings, devastating setbacks, and heartstopping losses. They look past what is visible to their eyes and focus on the unseen and unknown. C – Creativity A – Actively N – Nurtured You can and will succeed. I believe the best way to impact your success and increase your revenues is to invest in your mind. And the best ways to achieve this are courses, community, and coaching. Invest in being the best, you are worth it!

Here’s an example of a possibility. If I gave you a box of vanilla cake mix and said, “Bake a cake.” What I would expect and what you would deliver would be a vanilla cake. Now, if I gave you that same box of vanilla cake mix and said “make a dessert.” Well, now the fun begins! I have set your mind free of the confines of the expected. Your mind begins to expand and imagine the possibility. You get to deliver results that exceed expectations and showcase just how extraordinary you can be… given the chance. To further illustrate the expansiveness of possibilities. I googled “unconventional ways to bake a cake” and came across, “16 Unexpected Things You Can Do With Cake Mix.”

Meshell Baker is the Chief Confidence Igniter helping women business owners and sales leaders around the globe empower to ignite confident belief and enable their people to develop high-performance resilience and unstoppable confidence. JUNE 2022 Success Women's Magazine

“It’s never too late to be whoever you want to be.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

What is an interesting fact about you that most people may not know? "I jokingly say that I’m “over-educated,” having earned two doctorates, two masters, and certificates from Harvard, Oxford, and Dartmouth. If I weren’t empowering women to take control of their lives, I’d be on stages around the world singing arias utilizing my years of training at the Chicago Conservatory of Music."

What do you feel are the 3 qualities a leader should have? "A leader is a person dedicated to self-awareness, maximizes their authentic expression, contributes to the development of others, and motivates people with a shared vision of the future."

What is the most important aspect(s) of your brand? "Your brand is your unique promise of value to the world, and for me, it's to create a world where women stop hiding in the shadows of their brilliance and step into the power of who they are; to not just dream about but realize their own vision, purpose, and life's work. To

be a visible catalyst of change and disruptor empowering women to achieve their professional and personal aspirations easily and be an example of what's possible. "

What is your definition of a successful woman and how does she make history? "A successful woman is constantly growing, evolving, and reinventing herself, becoming a better version of who she was before. She makes history by first owning and showcasing her own brilliance and then shining a light on others, inspiring them to do the same."

What events, programs, or offers do you have on the horizon? The Boardroom, a monthly roundtable and facilitated discussion on how to successfully navigate the key issues facing midlife career professional women who are senior leaders, rising executives, and experienced highachievers. The Boardroom meets on the last Friday of the month at 10:00 am PST. www.carolparkerwalsh.com/boardroom

Imposter Syndrome Preys on Personality Type, Not Gender by Leah Marone, MSW, LCSW Over the years, I have worked with many clients that struggle with the thinking patterns and anxieties associated with imposter syndrome. I have never viewed it as something that primarily affects females, simply because it has been evenly distributed amongst my clients, regardless of their age or gender. Perhaps a reason why women in corporate America are more so associated with imposter syndrome is due to the maledominated structural and cultural framework that the majority of businesses and institutions embody. The foundations created are conducive to how men operate, lead, communicate, and ultimately define success. This phenomenon leaves women in an interesting position: do they conform? Or do they remain driven and operate authentically? Women run the risk of being viewed as threats. Some will be too accommodating, be taken advantage of, and unfortunately have to compromise certain values or neglect other roles they wish to nurture. The psychological toll that it requires to navigate such systems can be mentally exhausting and confusing and can lead to self-doubt. If imposter syndrome is not something associated with women, what type of individual does it typically affect? All of my clients who battle with imposter syndrome have perfectionistic personality types and seek high levels of affirmation. There is also a rigidity interwoven in how these individuals operate and how they process information. Tasks, obstacles, and interactions are viewed through a pass/fail lens, or by using an "all or nothing" mentality. Many of these individuals are elite athletes who have reached tremendous levels of success both physically and mentally. Some are CEOs or in other leadership positions that are highly associated with success in our society. Others are juggling several roles and are

stretched thin by the expectations they create for themselves. They walk tall, radiate confidence, and typically take good care of themselves. These individuals are humble and seem to be calculated with how they share their successes. They appear to have it all together and are very particular about who they are vulnerable with. There seems to be an element of distrust or lack of faith in others’ abilities to effectively listen or respond with worthwhile feedback. So oftentimes they redirect conversations and feel more comfortable with playing the role of the listener or the advisor. Their standards are high, and when someone introduces an obstacle, they typically accept it without hesitation. They rise to the challenge and are fueled by others' doubts, especially when they are verbalized directly at them. If and when they are giving critical feedback, they will more than likely counter it and then view it as a means to motivate. The source that feeds the self-doubt and fear of not being good enough is internally rooted. Their negative self-talk generates anxiety and insecurities that results in a heightened sensitivity about what others might think about them. They become more attuned to others’ nonverbal communication. Assumptions are now being made. It is these assumptions that perpetuate the negative thinking patterns, futuristic thinking, and anxiety that eventually leads to self-sabotage. One way to avoid making assumptions is to simply pause and get more information. Assumptions are dangerous because they have negativity associated with them and tend to falsely divide ownership. Begin by assessing whether or not it is appropriate to ask questions in order to gather more information or to pause and wait for the information to naturally come to you. Those who suffer from imposter syndrome tend to operate with a sense of urgency and detest the

unknown or unpredictable. These individuals have strong morals and can impulsively initiate inappropriate conversations in order to seek validation from others as a means to tie up any loose ends. This typically does not end well. The need to control or gain closure only ignites anxiety and can lead to impulsive decisions that again, don’t soothe, but sabotage. Understanding these tendencies and patterns is imperative for growth. Beginning to operate with the mentality that we can’t control or predict everything is key. Moving away from the pass/fail mentality and increasing our internal validation will build confidence and the ability to create realistic, empowering expectations. It is the fear of exposure, failure, and vulnerability that perpetuates the doubt and the anxiety. People are not thinking about you as much as you think they are. It is helpful to consistently remind yourself to embrace the process and journey that life has in store for you. Remember that the risks, the tumbles, and the hurdles are the things that generate the most growth.
