TALK The new iPhone… It’s not what you think it is… Karin Ferrari looked deep into the secret symbolism of the advertising campaign for the iPhone Xs. Her new short mystery documentary shows: It’s alive. And it is not entirely of terrestrial origin. These startling revelations are just the beginning of the strangest details to emerge from Ferrari’s alternative reading of iconic images and the curious insights they offer into our collective technological imagination – that the award winning artist, Karin Ferrari, shares for the first time at subnetTALK.
SPEAKER Karin Ferrari uses images from pop culture in order to investigate the present. Inspired by internet subcultures that try to understand ‘what’s really going on?!1!’ Ferrari’s video series DECODING THE WHOLE TRUTH claims to reveal hidden messages in music videos, news intros and advertising. Her work has been shown internationally in museums and art centres, such as the Belvedere 21 in Vienna, Moscow Biennale for Young Art, Antarctica Biennale, The Wrong – Digital Biennale, Art Omi New York. TALK Das Haupttätigkeitsfeld von m box sind große Produktionen wie immersive räumliche Filme und Inszenierungen für ungewöhnliche Formate. Gerade Industriekunden wie Mercedes und Telekom oder die Expo setzen bei Präsentationen und Messeauftritten interaktive Installationen mit den aktuellsten medialen Technologien ein. Das forciert die Entwicklung und das Programmieren von aufwendigen interaktiven Prototypen, Installationen und Exponaten. Die Inspirationen für die Projekte kommen häufig aus den Bereichen der Kunst und Wissenschaft und in Martins Fall auch aus der Technoszene. Neben dem kommerziellen Einsatz ist es Martin Retschitzeggerstets ein Anliegen das Erlernte auch in freie und künstlerische Projekte zurückzuführen. Für sein Tätigkeitsfeld betrachtet er Kreativität und Technik stets als gleichwertig und als sich gegenseitig inspirierende Faktoren.
SPEAKER Martin Retschitzegger ist Creative Director des Berliner Studios m box für räumliche mediale Inszenierungen und interaktive Installationen. Martin entdeckte seine Leidenschaft für den kreativen Umgang mit (vor allem) digitalen Technologien autodidaktisch als 3D-Animator und Techno-DJ/Producer in den frühen Neunziger Jahren in Wien, bevor er den Sprung nach Berlin wagte, wo er dann 1999 m box mitbegründete. m box arbeitet vorwiegend im Bereich des künstlerischen Umgangs mit aktuellsten Technologien, Medien sowie Inhaltsvermittlung und deren gestalterische und kommerzielle Anwendung.

TALK Project Aquatocene / Subaquatic quest for serenity by Robertina Šebjanič, reflects the aural underwater acoustic environment and the sound (noise) pollution produced there by human presence. The Aquatocene explores the relationship between sound, nature and society. It encourages rethinking the (invisible) human impact on the underwater habitats. Over the last few years the artist hadmade a number of recordings using hydrophones in different locations around the globe. She will also present her the sound compositions. SPEAKER Robertina Šebjanič (SLO) is international exhibited artist. Her artistic work deals with cultural, (bio)political and ecological realities of aquatic environments. With her projects she tackles the philosophical questions at the intersection of art, technology and science. Her projects are often realized in collaboration with others, through interdisciplinary and informal integration in her work. She is member of Hackteria Network and Theremidi Orchestra. TALK Throughout his art practice Matthew Mosher has invited the public to physically engage with his work using the power of human touch. Since Martin Heidegger developed his philosophy of Phenomenology, designers have applied embodiment to make their projects more meaningful and impactful. This talk will examine how strategies from tangible interaction design can be implemented within the fine arts to create moving experiences for participants, and by doing so empower people to see the world from different perspectives.
SPEAKER Matthew Mosher is an intermedia artist and research professor who creates embodied experiential systems. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA in Intermedia from Arizona State University. Currently, he is an assistant professor of games and interactive media at the University of Central Florida and a Fulbright Scholar in Austria. His internationally exhibited artworks bridge the physical and digital worlds by mixing computer programming, collaborative practice, and traditional sculpture processes.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Silvia Rosani studied composition in Italy, at Mozarteum Universität in Salzburg and completed a PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London. She also completed a degree in electronics and workswith software for sound analysis and live electronics. Silvia‘s music is performed internationally by ensembles such as Neue Vocalsolisten, ÖENM, Ensemble Platypus and United Instruments of Lucilin. Some of the venues and festivals in which her music was performed are Salzburg and Venice Biennale, MATA (NY), Music Current (Dublin), ECLAT (Stuttgart), Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid) and Rhialto Theater (Limassol). In September 2017, Silvia worked with ensemble In Extensio in Montréal thanks to the Residency New Music / Québec – UK (hcmf) Exchange and was recipient of the IMRO/Music Current commission. Silvia‘s project White Masks was awarded a Public Engagement Grant by the Institute of Musical Research (IMR), the Francis Chagrin Award and was granted the support of the Goldsmiths Annual Fund. In the next few months, the project will be performed at Dias de la Musica Electroacustica (DME) and Atelierfrankfurt. Silvia is currently Lecturer in Composition at Cardiff University School of Music and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Tom Jacques is a multi-instrumentalist and sound artist. His work evolves between composition, improvisation, performance and sound device design, mainly in contemporary music, jazz, and percussion. For the last 5 years, he has been working with various artists and technicians in order to make his own musical instruments and sound installations. Tom Jacques stands out among Quebec’s new breed of creative artists. Many of his personal projects and musical ensembles have been acknowledged and supported by the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts. He is the recipient of the Bas-Saint-Laurent Best Newcomer Award (2017). Tom is the Artistic Director of the percussion trio Bascaille, a co-artistic director of the jazz quartet Manta, and a member of the GGRIL (Grand Groupe Régional d’Improvisation LIbre, which means “large regional free improvisation group”. He regularly collaborates with artists of all stripes as a musician, composer, and consultant. This young artist is strongly involved in the cultural community. Currently president of Arte Tracto and director of Culture du Bas-Saint-Laurent, he helped set up Garage à musique de la Haute-Gaspésie, a pilot project inspired by Montréal’s GAM, which uses music to help young people lessen the negative impacts of their harsh living conditions. The GAM’s services are free.

PROJECT The idea behind “starting from the vibes” is to develop both hardware and software to expand the limits of the vibraphone. The investigation aims to achieve a control of the envelope of the instrumental sound and to provide the performer with a set of choices on how to affect the timbre and the spatialization of the sound produced. More specifically, given a selected setting, the stimulation of specific bars might activate the vibration of a group of bars of the vibraphone – like it happens with the registers of an organ – or a group of motors that will act on other objects in the room. Another aspect of the project is to design the software so that it offers the opportunity to spatialise the sound of the instrument according to the number of speakers/outputs in the room through a pre-arranged set of configurations and to use a midi system to program sounds that respond to the bars’ solicitation.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Vera Sebert studierte Freie Kunst an der Hochschule für bildende Kunst Braunschweig und der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. Künstlerisch arbeitet Vera Sebert in den Grenzbereichen von visuellen Medien, Sprache, Film, Computerprogramme. PROJECT Welche Machtposition nimmt Sprache im Kontext der Visualisierung von Computeralgorithmen ein? Wie kann die Aufmerksamkeit auf die eigene Körperlichkeit im Wahrnehmungsprozess sowie auf die medial bedingte Lesart gelenkt werden? Über elektronische Sensoren, beispielsweise über eine IP-Cam, lassen sich reale Ereignisse in Virtuelle übersetzen. Die digitale Oberfläche fungiert als unmittelbarer Spiegel des Geschehens. Wie lässt sich Sprache in diesem Kontext als Raumerweiterung und als physisches Material denken und welche Rolle spielt sie bei der Offenlegung digitaler Übersetzungsprozesse? Wie bei einem Vexierbild schweift die Beobachtung von Text zu Zeichen zu Bild zu Ton. Die Verschränkung der Ebenen lenkt den Blick in eine Sphäre jenseits von etablierten Lesarten und Wahrnehmungsstrategien.

subnetAIR ist das subnet artist in residence Programm. Gemeinsam mit dem Center for HCI fördern wir aktiv KünstlerInnen und verschaffen ihnen Öffentlichkeit, stellen Infrastruktur sowie Know-How zur Verfügung. Der Fokus liegt auf auf dem Austausch zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft mit Schwerpunkten in experimentellen Medien, Physical Computing, Hardware-Hacking und Tinkering. Die Residency beginnt mit der Möglichkeit die anwesenden KünstlerInnen kennenzulernen (Meet the Artist) und endet mit einer Präsentation sowie Dokumentation der entstandenen Ergebnisse (exitTALK).
