Average Base Pay: $55,167 per year Landscape archi tects design outdoor spaces, such as playgrounds and parks. The role of a landscape architect is very similar to that of one who designs buildings. Many of these profes sionals work for governments, but many work in private sector firms as well. Due to advances in technology, the job growth outlook for landscape architects is expected to decline by about 2% between 2019 and 2029.

Construction and building inspectors

Average Base Pay: $54,616 per year Construction and building inspectors evaluate projects for compliance with building codes and other local requirements and specifications. Like civil engineers, they often work for government agencies, but they may also work for con sultant firms. The job growth outlook for construction and building inspectors between 2019 and 2029 is 3%, which tracks with the average growth rate in other fields.

Average Base Pay: $74,730 per year Construction managers are responsible for supervising every aspect of building projects, including budgets, timelines, and labor. They work in many industries and for consulting firms. The job growth outlook for construction manag ers between 2019 and 2029 is 8%, much faster than the average growth rate for other occupations.

Urban and regional planners evaluate plots of land to make sure they are a good fit for planned development. They consider trends in population growth and community development. Planners also participate in plans for building renova tions and re-purposing. They work for governments, engineering and architectural firms, and consulting groups. The job growth outlook for urban and regional planners between 2019 and 2029 is expected to grow significantly, by as much as 11%, driven by changing demographics and the need for innovation in land and building usage. The architecture jobs outlook is growing more com petitive as computer technology makes it possible for fewer people to manage the workload. However, the employment rate for architects still shows an overall positive growth rate. For more, visit glassdoor.com.

hrough the year 2029, the architecture jobs' outlook and that of related fields is mixed. Some jobs are expected to grow, while others will likely contract. The improvement of technology for specific tasks has reduced the number of employees required for those aspects of the design and construction process. For other jobs, the field was affected by the economic downturn of 2008 and 2009 but is rebounding and creating new opportunities. People considering a career in architecture should consider which area they wish to pursue and choose specialized training to take them down that path.

What is the job outlook for an architect?

Interior designers

Many people who work in architecture may have other titles and work in related areas. Architecture professionals perform many functions within all levels of government, in the real estate world, and in the sustainable construc tion industry. Here are a few possible architecture job prospects for those with a background in architecture and the projected outlook for those jobs.

Interior designers create indoor spaces in the same way architects create buildings. They factor in the area’s planned uses, the safety needs, and the appearance that the client is look ing to achieve to determine square footage requirements and related requirements. Interior designers work for architectural firms, design houses, and similar organi zations. The job growth outlook for interior designers between 2019 and 2029 is expected to decline by 5% due to technology improvements.

Real estate de velopers use their knowledge of the land, construction principles, and engineering to lay out commercial and residential projects. The professionals are often selfemployed, but they may work for large corporations with holdings in multiple areas of the country. Construction managers

Average Base Pay: $56,571 per year Cost estimators gather information and project how much a given con struction project will cost, how long it will take, what materials will be needed, and what human resources will be necessary. These professionals work for private companies, financial firms, and other entities within the construction industry. The job growth outlook for cost estimators between 2019 and 2029 shows a slight decrease, mainly due to advances in technology that have reduced the number of employees necessary.

Restoration archi tects, sometimes called restoration planners or restoration managers, specialize in restoring and preserving historic buildings and other structures. They have specialized skills and knowledge in construction materials and how to keep them from wearing away over time, as well as how to restore them when they begin to erode or break down. Many are self-employed, but some work for de sign and architectural firms. The job growth outlook for restoration architects between 2019 and 2020 is expected to remain flat.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects the demand for architects to grow by 1% be tween 2019 and 2029. Architect job growth is somewhat slower than other fields, but it’s still growing in a positive direction. One reason for the slow-down from the prior years is that the computer-aided design tools available make modern architects more efficient and productive, so fewer people are necessary to get the work done. It’s important to note that this architecture jobs outlook is specific to the job market for architects, but there are many related occupations that may be more or less in demand. Geography also plays a role in the architect unemployment rate. What are some architecture jobs and what is the career outlook for each?

Average Base Pay: $55,567 per year Drafters convert designs to technical drawings. These professionals may work in any organization that employs architects and engineers, as they are often partnered together on pro jects. The job growth outlook for drafters between 2019 and 2029 is expected to decline by 4%. This fall-off is a result of software advances that reduce the number of drafters companies keep on staff.

Restoration architects

Urban and regional planners

The average base pay for architects in the United States is $86,500 as of March 2021. The salary that an architect earns varies by geography, years of experience, and level of education. Paid internships in architecture pay an average of $27,000 per year. Starting salaries for newly licensed professionals average around $60,000 per year, while experienced professionals in management roles can exceed $160,000 annually in large markets.

The biggest gap was in New York (-36,300 jobs, -8.9 percent), followed by Pennsylvania (-9,500 jobs, -3.6 percent) and New Jersey (-8,800 jobs, -5.4 percent). New York had the largest percentage shortfall, followed by North Dakota (-6.4 percent, -1,800 jobs) and Hawaii (-5.8 percent, -2,200 jobs). June employment topped the Febru ary 2020 level in 31 states and matched it in West Virginia. Utah added the most (16,100 jobs, 14.1 percent), followed by Tennessee (15,900 jobs, 12.0 percent) and Washington (11,200 jobs, 5.0 percent). The top percentage gains were in Utah, Idaho (12.9 percent, 7,100 jobs), and Tennessee. In June, 25 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs, 23 states lost jobs, and there was no change in Hawaii and West Virginia. Pennsylvania added the most construction jobs over the month (4,400 jobs, 1.7 percent), followed by Massachusetts (3,300 jobs, 1.9 percent) and North Carolina (3,000 jobs, 1.2 per cent). Oregon had the largest percentage gain (2.4 percent, 2,800 jobs), followed by Nebraska (2.3 percent, 1,300 jobs) and Arkansas (2.1 percent, 1,100 jobs).

A diverse mix of inputs accounted for the increase in the cost index even as prices for several metal and wood prod ucts declined, the economist added. The price index for diesel fuel soared 14.1 percent in June and more than doubled over 12 months, rising 111.1 percent since June 2021. The index for asphalt and tar roofing and siding products rose 3.2 percent in June and 22.2 percent over 12 months. The index for plastic construction products rose 1.5 percent for the month and 27.0 percent since June 2021. Insulation ma terials climbed 1.2 percent in price last month and 16.0 percent year-over-year. The index for concrete products rose 1.7 percent in June and 13.5 percent over 12 months. The index for paving mixtures and blocks increased 2.9 percent in June and 17.9 percent over the past year. These increases more than offset de clines in indexes for metals and lumber.

“Some materials prices have fallen recently but others appear headed for further increases,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “Since these prices were collected, producers of gypsum, concrete and other products have announced or implemented new increases. In addition, the supply chain remains fragile and persistent difficulties filling job openings mean construction costs are likely to remain elevated de spite declines in some prices.”

he price of materials and ser vices used in nonresidential construction jumped 1.1 per cent last month, outpacing the rise in contractors’ bid prices, according to an analysis by the Associated General Con tractors of America of government data released recently. Association officials warned that rising materials prices were having an adverse impact on a growing number of construction projects that have suddenly become more expensive.

The producer price index for inputs to nonresidential construction--the prices charged by goods producers and service providers such as distributors and trans portation firms—jumped 1.1 percent from May to June and 16.8 percent since June 2021. Meanwhile, the index for new nonresidential building construc tion—a measure of what contractors calculate they would charge to erect five types of nonresidential buildings— climbed by 0.5 percent from May to June and 19.8 percent over 12 months.

officials said public of ficials had a vested interest in taking steps to address rising materials prices, noting those price increases are making it more expensive to build all manner of public infrastructure projects. They urged the Biden administration to re move remaining tariffs on a range of construction materials and for public officials at all levels to take steps to help unclog backed-up supply chains.

“The more materials prices increase, the harder it will be for public officials to build new schools, roads, and other infrastructure,” said Stephen E. Sand herr, the association’s chief executive officer. “Taking steps to address rising materials prices will help construction employers and taxpayers alike.”

There were one-month decreases in June in the index for copper and brass mill shapes, -1.6 percent; steel mill products, -1.8 percent; aluminum mill shapes, -5.2 percent; and lumber and plywood, -14.7Associationpercent.

SUBCONTRACTORS USA10 | August 2022 Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication ou don’t need to be an expert in energy to know that solar power is here to stay. A major signifier of that happens to be right here in San Anto nio—a top solar city in the nation. OCI Solar Power, one of the largest solar energy developers in Texas, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in San Antonio. CPS Energy leaders were excited to partake in the festivities, as our partnership with OCI Solar Power has led to the develop ment of 500 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable, and reliable solar projects in San Antonio and throughout Texas. That’s enough to power 100,000 homes. OCI Solar Power and its companies, including Mission Solar Energy and Sun Action Trackers, quickly became valuable partners when they arrived in San Anto nio. The waves of innovation and technol ogy that came from OCI Solar Power have made a significant impact on the city’s local economy and the development and growth of renewable energy here. Today, OCI Solar Power and Mission Solar En ergy provide nearly 200 full-time jobs to members of our community right here in the Alamo City. The anniversary celebration, held in the International Center, combined both the beautiful Korean and Mexican cultures and featured traditional Korean dance and drum performances as well as a mariachi group. Members of the OCI Solar Power executive team as well as Vice Chairman of OCI Company addressed local digni taries, members of partner organizations, and others who showed up for the 10-year luncheon.RudyGarza, Interim President & CEO at CPS Energy, congratulated OCI Solar Power and CPS Energy staff that first worked together to launch the partnership a decade ago. “On behalf of my team I want to con gratulate you on your success and our collective success together, especially this amazing partnership that we’ve devel oped,” said Garza. “This was the firstof-its-kind purchase power agreement and economic development agreement combined. Today, because of this strate gic partnership with OCI Solar Power, San Antonio is a recognized Solar Super star—number one in the state of Texas and number five in the nation for solar capacity. You know we have a goal to be number one and we’re going to keep driving towards that.” The road to more clean energy for our community brings with it lots of opportu nity. OCI Solar Power announced a new $500,000 partnership with St. Philip’s College and Project Quest to train job seekers for roles in the solar industry. That comes on the heels of CPS En ergy’s recently announced agreement with Consolidated Edison Development for 300 MW of new solar energy as part of their FlexPOWER Bundle initiative. The development of the solar farm will lead to 250-300 construction jobs and $500,000 to support CPS Energy’s community pri orities, i.e. education and customer as sistance, over a 10-year period. mployment in the US oil and gas industry is set to rebound in the coming years and surpass pre-Covid levels, with almost 1.1 million pro jected workers by the end of 2027, according to Rystad Energy research. The sector shed nearly 200,000 jobs during the pandemic – a whopping 20% of the total workforce. However, on the back of high oil prices and bullish market sentiment, almost half of the jobs lost have already been recovered. After a dismal 2020 that shaved more than 100,000 jobs off the sector, US oil and gas employment is set to expand by 12.5% this year, rising from around 863,000 to 971,000 total jobs by the end of 2022. The total number of jobs in 2027 is expected to hit 1.09 million, a marginal increase from the 1.07 million in the sector pre-Covid in 2019. But operators are feeling the impact of inflation on their bottom lines, meaning wages are unlikely to grow significantly this year. Wage growth across the industry is expected to be a relatively meager 2.9% in 2022, but the outlook towards the middle of the decade is rosier, with wage growth in 2024 projected to approach 10%. This employment forecast is based on Rystad Energy’s oil price scenario in which WTI oil price averages $106 per barrel this year, $70 per barrel in 2023, and $50 per barrel towards 2025.

“Fueled by a rapid rise in oil prices amid a better-thanexpected demand recovery and the supply constraints brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US labor market seems poised to benefit and continue on a growth trajectory,” says Sumit Yadav, an analyst with Rystad Energy.

The primary growth factor behind the steady job gains is the oil price rebound, which is expected to motivate US operators to ramp up investments to more than $90 billion annually by 2027, representing a growth of nearly 40% compared to the lows of 2020. In addition, the optimism of operators is fueled by positive develop ments in government policies. The most prominent is the Biden Administration’s announcement that it will lease out more than 145,000 acres of public land across nine states for drilling. The policy is aimed at increasing oil and gas production to boost national energy security and drive exports to help Europe reduce its reliance on RussianHowever, energy.thecomplete recovery of the US labor market hinges on operators successfully navigating significant challenges, including securing financing for necessary expansions. Having burnt their fingers in the previous shale boom, many shale creditors are now adopting a more cautious approach before committing to new pro jects, putting a damper on the expansion plans of many operators. While E&Ps have recently enjoyed record free cash flows, which will provide better optionality to fund work independently outside financing, some companies will still need external funding, especially mid to small-sized players. The lack of financing is further exacerbated by rampant inflation and the inevitable spike in interest rates. The US Federal Reserve is looking to curb inflation by reducing business spending, which could dampen continuous recovery in the labor market. Additionally, an accel eration of retirements across the economy, permanent employee relocation, competition from the renewable energy sector, and a limited pool of highly skilled workers, will challenge industry players looking to boost hiring activity. Amid a combination of all these factors – and spearheaded by historically high inflation – we expect the US oil and gas industry to add nearly 120,000 jobs between 2022 and 2027, meaning a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.3%, taking the total employ ment above pre-pandemic levels.

Inflation is taking a toll on the budgets of industry players. The average wage across the industry increased by nearly 6.3% in 2021 compared to only a 2.9% increase in 2020. However, the impressive wage growth in 2021 was primarily concentrated in low-skilled trades with a lower starting salary. Wage growth remained elusive for highly skilled oil and gas roles, such as petroleum engineers and geoscientists. But the future outlook is promising as wages for these trades are forecast to rebound as the talent pool tightens. For instance, the supply of petroleum engineers has de clined by more than 10,000 since 2019 as many workers became frustrated by frequent boom and bust cycles and moved into other industries. Young graduates are increas ingly showing reluctance for oil and gas trades, instead opting for renewables. Based on figures from the end of 2021, the oil and gas industry requires an additional 8,000 petroleum engineers to capitalize on the current high oil prices. Consequently, it will need to shell out a premium to lure young graduates and existing engineers alike. The lack of highly skilled labor combined with high inflation and an increasingly demanding workforce in terms of better working conditions, flexible hours, and perks is expected to usher in high wages. Oil and gas wages are expected to grow at a rapid CAGR of 7.13% between 2022 and 2027. For more information, please visit www.rystadenergy.com.

Wage growth

Shortly after the pandemic hit and demand dropped to previously unseen levels, the US oil and gas labor market suffered one of its most harrowing periods of job loss. Between June 2020 and May 2021, more than 100,000 jobs were lost, primarily in the drilling tools and services segment. More than 20,000 jobs – 20% of the segment’s workforce – were cut as drilling activity ground to a halt, operators doubled down on remote drilling initiatives and shelved or delayed new initiatives.

The operational support and construction and installation segments were also severely impacted and lost more than 68,000 jobs combined, accounting for more than 68% of all job losses. The maintenance segment remained largely unaffected as operators prioritized maintenance over other segments. In contrast, since May 2021, a significant number of jobs have been recovered. As of late April 2022, the industry has regained more than 100,000 jobs com pared to pre-pandemic levels, and by the end of 2027, we expect the number of oil and gas jobs to marginally surpass pre-Covid employment levels.
