Editorial

Hell reader and thank you for taking an interest in this fantastic event hosted by Portsmouth Guildhall and Supported by our staff and students from St Vincent College, Gosport.

Clash on the Coast and Esports with St Vincent Sharks is presented as part of Portsmouth Guildhall’s annual Games Fest. Clash on the Coast was established in the February 2023, along with Portsmouth Guildhall and the resident esports team of St Vincent College known as the St Vincent Sharks

The competition is a collective show match, set up to allow local south coast teams to display their skill on the live stage in the seaside city of Portsmouth. Teams are invited to showcase their collective abilities and demonstrate the positives that epsorts provides.

Teams will compete in a series of games including Overwatch 2 and Rocket League with the chance for audience members to participate later in each of the days - we will be following the same rules that the British Esports Federation set out for the unique and inclusive Student Championships which run nationally from October - June every academic year.

Following the popularity of board and retro gaming as part of the Guildhall’s inaugural Portsmouth Comic Con, a stand-alone event for gaming was created and the first Games Fest took place in 2018. Since then, Games Fest has developed into a two-day event that explores all areas of gaming.

As well as Esports, Games Fest 2024 will offer board gaming, retro arcade games, indie games, South Asian games, Dungeons and Dragons and Tudor games with the Mary Rose!

We hope you enjoy the days and look forward to seeing you in the esports arena.

St Vincent Sharks

The St Vincent Sharks were established in January 2020, prior to covid.

Initially starting as an SEN esports enrichment team, for learners with additional learning needs and difficulties the team participated in their first ever British Esports Alternate Provision tournament

in the same year. The team started their journey in Rocket League playing 3 v 3 against other colleges, but soon the interested spread to the entire college, and ended up with the team becoming a mixture of both SEN learners from our school of personalised learning, our SEN unit, and our Sixth Form students, promoting equality through video games.

Since 2022, the Sharks have expanded tremendously, with the introduction of both Level 2 and Level 3 esport courses being introduced into the college.

We have also seen students from the course move into Higher Education in 2024 from the courses.

St Vincent Sharks have become a staple in the British Esport student championships.

Portsmouth Paladins

Established in November 2018, The University of Portsmouth Esports Society is a 100% student-run Esports group committed to balancing the playing field and giving our members their ticket into the world of Student Esports. We provide a strong support for our players to compete in national

We provide a strong support for our players to compete in national student leagues, meet our graduate alumni and realise their potential in their respective games. We support students with finding their teammates and setting up teams, and forging friendships for life. In addition to this we try our best to host 1-2 LANs per year, typically within the University or Student Union.

Outside of competitive play, we have a strong sense of community and are committed to maintaining that through frequent in-person socials across the entire society, or game by game. We host regular Wings Wednesday trips, Esports Sports Weekend (Hosting Dodgeball and Five-a-side Football), Movie Nights/Cinema Trips and Pub Golf. On smaller scale events within games/individual teams we often do Minigolf, Spoons, Arcade trips and Watchparties.

QM Samurais

Established by Director of Fraser Esports James FraserMurison and based in Queen Marys College, Basingstoke, Hampshire.

QMC Samurais, are one of the early adopters of the Epsorts Level 2 and 3 courses and set the standard for esports in education by investing with support from Etnterprise M3

to create a superb arena costing over £300,000. QMC Samurais have seen some fantastic results in the competitive scene winning the Overwatch Division 1 Finals in 2022.

QMC Samurais, have attended multiple LAN events including BETT in London and have previously made an appearance at Games Fest in 2023 where they won the Overwatch tournament, beating the runner up Chi Cobras.

Study Esports

Esports can be studied at Level 2 or Level 3 through BTEC Pearson. Many will assume incorrectly that Esports is a course which teaches “how to play videogames” which is not the case.

The course, teaches learners about the industry of course and provides an overview of different subjects related to the sector. It provides education in business development allowing students to develop their business plan skills and branding development, provides learners with IT sector skills, develop their health and wellbeing along with nutrition and gives a good education in the media sector - all whilst allowing learners to embrace and expand their transferable skills.

Here at St Vincent College we are proud to offer a fantastic course with dedicated esports facilities including state of the art equipment in partnership with Dell Technologies

We pride ourselves on our strategic partnerships and strive to deliver a fully equal and unique enrichment offering, allowing students to compete in the student championships whilst also developing their social skills and making last friendships. for more information visit our website www.stvincent.ac.uk
