Where Art Meets Science to Impact the World

At the Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON), we Train Champions for Christ who care with both their hearts and their minds. Exhibiting the art and science of nursing, our students help those in need nationally and around the world by impacting and investing in the lives of others.

Our Purpose

The Liberty University School of Nursing is designed to prepare registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses to view nursing as a ministry of caring and service. The nursing curriculum is built upon a foundation from the arts, sciences, and the Bible and emphasizes the use of the nursing process to guide students as they acquire nursing knowledge, build strong clinical skills, and develop the foundation necessary for sound practice based on Christian ethical standards. Graduates are skilled at using the art and science of nursing to educate, lead, and positively influence all individuals and communities.

Rooted in Faith, Nurtured by Excellence

The story of LUSON began with a vision: to create nurses who not only heal bodies but also touch souls. Founded in the heart of Central Virginia, Liberty University’s School of Nursing has been a beacon of hope since its inception.

1982: The Liberty Nursing Department began with the Registered Nurse (RN) to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) track. The initial class comprised three students, and the second class expanded to five.

1986: We began to offer the four-year residential BSN program for aspiring nurses. The first class of 40 students embarked on their nursing journey.

2004: Our Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program began with the Clinical Nurse Specialist program. We transitioned to an online environment, offering the Nurse Educator concentration. Dual degrees with the School of Business (MSN/MBA and MSN/MSHA) followed.

2014: Liberty University School of Nursing was created from the Department of Nursing.

2014: Doctorate Level Degrees programs were launched. The first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was launched in 2014, followed in 2018 by the introduction of an online format for Family Nurse Practitioner DNP and a Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) Program in 2019.

2018: The LUSON Simulation Center was expanded. Our accredited Simulation Center, which transforms theory into practice, now spans 14,019 square feet, housing state-of-the-art rooms and equipment. Through deliberate practice, high-fidelity simulations, and virtual experiences, students learn critical thinking at the patient’s bedside.

2022: Our Accelerated BSN Program was introduced. Designed for second-degree students, it fast-tracks their journey into the nursing workforce.

2024: You Make an Impact! You could add your impact to our history. Donors like you are the heartbeat of our mission. Your generosity fuels scholarships, cutting-edge simulation labs, and faculty development. Together, we shape the future of nursing—one life at a time.

Training Nursing Champions

At LUSON, we say we are the hands and feet and heart of Christ to a hurting world. Our prayer for our faculty and students is that God would open the eyes of our hearts and that He would break our hearts with the things that break His heart. We aim to Train Champions for Christ who are not just skilled professionals but compassionate souls who see beyond symptoms, hold hands with empathy, and pray for healing. Our students graduate not only with a degree but also with a calling.

As a donor, you’re not just giving; you’re transforming lives. Whether you’re a seasoned nurse, a proud parent, or someone who believes in the power of Christcentered care, your support matters; together, we’ll continue to shape the future of nursing—one life at a time.

As you read through some of the Impact Opportunities available to you through the Liberty University School of Nursing, know that every contribution will be stewarded to the best of our ability. Take time to prayerfully consider the best way you can live generously through these needs and opportunities.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Imagine a student who dreams of making a difference but faces financial barriers. Your generosity can provide scholarships, opening doors for aspiring nurses. These scholarships don’t just fund education; they empower students to pursue their calling. With your support, dreams take flight.

Empowering Aspirations: Scholarships provide relief from financial burdens, allowing students to focus on their studies and clinical experiences.

Diverse Pathways: Whether it’s a first-generation college student or a seasoned RN seeking further education, scholarships make education accessible to all.

Impact Multiplier: When you invest in a student’s education, you’re not just changing one life—you’re impacting generations.

Cost of Scholarship:

Named Scholarship: You can create a legacy for yourself or a loved one while impacting the lives of our nursing students. Establishing a named scholarship at Liberty University requires a monetary gift that is contributed one time or annually. Financial awards are made based on the amount contributed by the donor.

Minimum Amount to Establish an Endowment: $50,000

Maximum Time Limit to Reach Full Endowment: Up to 5 years

STUDENT CLINICAL TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

Required Clinical Rotations Beyond Lynchburg

At the Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON), we believe that learning extends beyond classroom walls. That’s why we invest in student travel, ensuring our future nurses gain diverse experiences.

Our students complete vital clinical rotations at hospital systems outside of Lynchburg. These experiences expose them to different healthcare organizations, diverse patient populations, and cutting-edge practices. Your contributions cover travel expenses, including hotel stays and bus fares. By easing this financial burden, we empower students to focus on their learning journey.

Cost of Clinical Travels:

The total standard clinical travel costs are nearly $250,000 per year, or an average of $X,XXX per student.

Clinical Mission Trips

Our students have opportunities each year to complete clinical hours while impacting the world for good. They go outside the safety or comfort of our country to places like Kenya and Rwanda to bring healing to those who need it most. Your contributions make these clinical mission trips possible. Together, we impact lives worldwide. It’s not just about medical care; it’s about compassion in action.

Cost of Clinical Travels: On average, the total team cost for a Clinical Mission Trip is $XX,XXX. The current cost for each student to take advantage of this opportunity is approximately $5,000.

A Vision of Compassion and Support

At the Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON), we envision a campus where mental health is prioritized, stigma is shattered, and compassionate care extends to every corner. Our new Mental Health First Aid Training program embodies this vision. Here’s how your support can make a lasting impact:

With funding, we aim to train several LUSON faculty members as certified instructors. These experts will then empower other LU departments, creating a ripple effect of mental health awareness. Imagine faculty across disciplines equipped to recognize signs, offer support, and promote wellbeing. Your contribution fuels this transformative training.

Supporting Mental Health First Aid Training will improve mental health for students, faculty, and staff. Trained individuals become first responders—listening, empathizing, and connecting those in need to resources. Your impact reaches beyond classrooms and offices.

Cost to begin the Mental Health First Aid Program:

This program would be facilitated through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. It would cost us $XX,XXX to train enough instructors to adequately support our campus or $2,200 per New Instructor.

EMPOWERING EXCELLENCE

A Vital Investment in Learning

Quality education requires more than textbooks and lectures. It demands hands-on experience with cutting-edge medical equipment. By equipping the classrooms, your impact as a donor resonates far beyond the school’s walls.

State-of-the-Art Equipment: Our Simulation Center thrives on advanced tools. Your donations could fund EKG machines, ultrasound machines, defibrillators, and more. Students will learn with the same equipment that they will encounter in real healthcare settings.

Training Manikins: These lifelike simulators replicate human anatomy, allowing students to practice procedures, from basic assessments to advanced life-support techniques and even preterm baby care.

Task Trainers: These specialized models focus on specific skills—suturing, IV insertion, and more. Your contributions empower students to master these critical techniques.

Classroom Furniture: Every day, our furniture is used and practiced on. Hospital beds, rolling tables, and even folding chairs are all well-used and need to be replaced to facilitate an excellent education experience.

Consumables: From bandages to IV supplies, consumables are the lifeblood of nursing skills practice.

Your donations ensure that students have access to these essential materials during their training.
