GUIDE TO GIVING

A Guide To Giving

Help Liberty University carry out its original and continuing mission to train up the next generation of Training Champions for Christ.

Create a lasting legacy

At Liberty University, quality is not measured by exclusivity and how many students we reject. Instead, our focus is on how many students we accept and equip for success. This strategy has earned Liberty a place in the Carnegie Foundation’s ranking of U.S. colleges and universities as a doctoral university. We stand in the company of top universities and are recognized as a school committed to academic excellence.

Liberty prepares the next generation of leaders for tomorrow’s ever-changing global marketplace.

Campus Life

Campus life at Liberty University is thriving more than ever because of generous donors like you. The vision that God gave to Dr. Jerry Falwell is happening here in real time. Exponential growth has exploded this year with the building of a new Reber-Thomas Dining Hall, the announcement of brand new parking garage plans, more events than ever before, etc. It’s safe to say that Liberty is constantly growing, but still remaining true to its original mission of Training Champions for Christ.

Liberty students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and recreational spaces to ensure they enjoy the best college experience without compromising on values.

After nearly 50 years of educating young men and women to be faith-based leaders, Liberty diligently continues to ensure that our founding mission remains constant. Every person who steps on campus walks on years of answered prayers that have shaped, molded, and transformed this university through bold faith.

“Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” -2 Cor. 3:17

Academics

Our 700+ programs of study mean that no matter what a student is passionate about, they can easily turn it into a career with one of our degrees. They can also learn and grow in a faith-based environment that encourages them to pursue their God-given calling in the classroom or on the field.

Champions for Christ

Liberty’s student population is extremely diverse, allowing for Champions for Christ to go out and change the world with their unique traits, abilities, and calling. All 50 states and 76 countries are represented within the student body. There are over 40,000 military students. 59% of students are female and 41% are male. The University is considered to be one of the largest Christian universities in the world!

Rise With Us

Athletics

Student athletes train and compete in world-class facilities like the Liberty Athletics Center and Williams Stadium, all made possible by Liberty supporters.

A thriving athletics program has been an integral part of Liberty University’s vision from the beginning, and today Liberty has 20 NCAA Division I athletic vteams, 40+ Club Sports teams, and 20 intramural sports.

Spiritual Life

At Liberty, the education and spiritual well-being of our students are equally important. Liberty encourages a commitment to the Christian life, one of personal integrity, sensitivity to the needs of others, social responsibility, and, as it is lived out, a life that leads people to Jesus Christ as the Lord of the universe and their own personal Savior.

Convocation

Students attend Christ-centered services like Convocation, the largest weekly gathering of Christian students in the world, each week. Each year Liberty hosts more than 80 nationally known speakers from a variety of fields. Past speakers include author Lysa TerKeurst, Samaritan’s Purse president Franklin Graham, music artist Jeremy Camp, and NFL quarterback Carson Wentz.

Serving Faithfully

At Liberty University, we understand that the Gospel is universal in scope. Through departments like LU Send, students use their passions and skills for cross-cultural ministry. They share the Gospel in word and deed, restoring hope to people when and where they need it most.

Lynchburg & Beyond

Through programs like LU Send, which exist to Train Champions for Christ to become global citizens through experiential learning and cultural engagement, Liberty students are able to serve the needs of their community and the world around them. Many study abroad, international internships, and group travel opportunities are readily available.

Ways to Give Giving Opportunities

Make a difference and support our mission of Training Champions for Christ.

Annual Fund

Liberty University’s Annual Fund campaign raises money for the day-to-day operations of Liberty, such as funding student financial aid, academic initiatives, and maintaining university facilities. It also helps bridge the gap between tuition and the operating costs of the university.

Benevolence Fund

The Emplolyee Benevolence Fund provides emergency relief to university faculty and staff members in times of need, such as the loss of a loved one or an unexpected illness.

Capital Campaigns

Capital campaign initiatives provide for campus development and expansion as we focus on building the facilities needed to advance our programs and further our mission.

Endowments

While all gifts to Liberty contribute to the high quality of education, research, and outreach, endowments are particularly meaningful. These are gifts held in perpetuity and invested in a manner that protects the principal. Additionally, the investment income provides a stable funding source. Many endowment gifts actually allow more funds to be given to Liberty over the years than a gift for current use.

Gifts of Stock

Your wise investments are a great gift to Liberty. By donating stock, you avoid long-term capital gains tax and deduct the full market value on your return. It is almost always to your advantage to transfer appreciated securities to Liberty directly, rather than selling them and giving cash.

Gift of Property (Gift-In-Kind)

Works of art, rare books, antique furnishings, and other tangible personal property are valued and appreciated donations.

Gifts of Real Estate

Ways to Give Planned Giving

Make a difference and support our mission of Training Champions for Christ.

Bequest

A Bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying that a gift be made to Liberty University as part of your estate plan.

Gift Annuities

Gift Annuities provide assured fixed income for the lives of one or two qualified individuals by transferring $5,000 or more in cash and/or securities to Liberty University. An annuity agreement established during your lifetime is a good way to increased after-tax income. Your gift allows you to claim a charitable deduction on your tax return to reduce your tax liability.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust

A Charitable Remainder Unitrust generates a deductible charitable gift and provides you or another beneficiary with a lifetime income. The use of this trust avoids capital gains tax, generates an immediate income tax deduction, and provides that Liberty University will receive the remainder of the trust when it is released at the end of your lifetime.

A Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust

A Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust, like a gift annuity, distributes a fixed-dollar amount for your lifetime. This trust is irrevocable and provides you with an immediate income tax deduction for your charitable gift. Liberty University receives the remainder of the trust at the end of your lifetime.

Life Estate

Life Estate allows you to give a personal residence or vacation home to Liberty University and then retain the right to live in it for the rest of your life. You receive a charitable deduction based on the remainder interest that you give to the university, which will reduce your income taxes. At the end of your life, the university receives a clear title to the property.

A Living Trust

A Living Trust is set up by a grantor, who is still living, with terms that permit him or her to amend or revoke it at any time. A revocable trust is used to transfer property during one’s lifetime in order to secure better management, receive an income, and establish desired distribution at death to beneficiaries without passing the property through probate court.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance is simple to give. Choose from a variety of options to fit your person desires and financial situation. Simply name Liberty as a beneficiary, and the proceeds are paid promptly outside of probate. You may receive income tax deductions, and the gift will not be delayed by settlement of your estate.

Ways to Give Scholarships

The expense of a college education can be a burden, but Liberty strives to ensure that every student training as a Champion for Christ receives the help they require. Ninety-six percent of residential students at Liberty receive some form of financial aid. We invite you to make a difference in the lives of future Liberty students by considering a gift to one of the following funds:

71 Club Scholarship Fund

Be the champion they need and invest in the life of a Liberty student. One-hundred percent of your donation to the 71 Club Scholarship Fund goes directly to student scholarships.

General Scholarship Fund

The General Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students on the basis of need, as determined by the university’s Financial Aid Office.

Heroes Fund Scholarship

Liberty University is proud to honor the U.S. service members who selflessly risk their lives for America’s cherished liberties. Established to assist both wounded veterans and spouses of veterans killed in action, the Heroes Fund Scholarship helps our nation’s heroes and their families as they pursue their own American dream of a college degree.

Named Endowed Scholarship Fund

Named Endowed Scholarship Funds start at $50,000. You can name a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one for various schools and departments, such as the College of Osteopathic Medicine, John W. Rawlings School of Divinity, School of Nursing, and School of Business.
