Far and Wide Zimbabwe, located in the Nyanga sector of the Eastern Highlands, is a highly renowned outdoor mountain centre that has played a pivotal role in the outdoor education of tens of thousands of young Zimbabweans over the last 35 years, as well as boosting tourism in the Eastern Highlands through various companies.

Despite the overshadowing popularity of destinations like Victoria Falls, Hwange and Mana Pools, the Eastern Highlands has steadily emerged as a must visit location for adventure enthusiasts. Most notably with the opening of the Far and Wide Mutarazi Falls SkyWalk and SkyLine, the world’s highest, situated over Africa’s second highest waterfall in the Nyanga National Park.

The Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe caters to a unique kind of tourism, with a focus on adventure and mountain wilderness retreat experiences. Unlike the popular Big 5 safaris, this region offers a more specialised experience for international and local visitors looking for something outside traditional safaris.

Far and Wide Activities

Since its establishment in 1989 by Bernie and Julie Cragg, the organisation has experienced steady growth. Although centrally focused on providing premium wilderness outdoor team and leadership courses, personal development opportunities and conservation programmes, it has expanded through a tourism company to encompass a wide range of tourism services.

Their vast range of outdoor activities enables participants to step out of their comfort zone, familiar frames of reference and embrace the challenges. The programmes not only foster personal growth but also promote team dynamics offering valuable lessons in leadership and creating an environment that inspires personal growth.

The Turaco Trail, Zimbabwe's most beautiful and challenging hiking trail, is a 170-kilometre multiday experience established by Far and Wide. It takes hikers through some of the most remote and hidden wilderness areas of the Nyanga National Park. With a carefully handcrafted design and strict sustainability measures in place, this single-track mountain trail offers an unforgettable adventure for guests who can choose to spend anywhere from 1 to 7 nights hiking in the pristine wilderness of the park on the Turaco Trail.

Since its inception by Far and Wide in 2014, SkyRun Zim, Zimbabwe's inaugural Ultra-Trail Marathon, represents an extreme endurance event and personal challenge to participants. Starting at Far and Wide participants navigate the tough mountainous terrain for up to 35 hours, including a full unsupported night for those taking on the longest route – The GOAT 100km, the event has experienced significant growth since its inception and is loved by many who take on the challenge annually.

SkyRun is limited to a sought after 300 participants, primarily consisting of locals but also including 11 national representatives. This event has become a catalyst in Zimbabwe for trail-running. It takes place every December, typically during the second week.

Every year in March/April, the Mountain and Rivers Festival takes place over a full weekend in the mountains, with live music, whitewater sports and more. Experience the thrill of whitewater

rafting and kayaking expeditions on the Pungwe river, offering an exciting alternative to the well-known Zambezi trips at Victoria Falls.

Additional activities offered at Far and Wide include their new international standard high ropes courses consisting of blue, green, and black routes, with the newest continuous auto-belay technology from Switzerland, the first of its kind in Africa.

“We constantly aim to innovate in leading our industry whilst focusing on upholding the highest standards of sustainability, quality and safety within our mountain craft space. We place a great deal of importance on safety and source our equipment from the global leading manufacturers that comply with international standards,” said Joshua Cragg, Far and Wide Director.

Far and Wide, through its innovations, has been a major driving force behind the revival of interest in the Eastern Highlands and Zimbabwe's tourism industry, drawing attention to the region's numerous attractions.

They aim to have a soft touch upon the earth with minimal environmental impact and a strong CSR approach to sustainability. As part of a number of community and conservation service initiatives, SkyRun, The Turaco Trail, and Far and Wide, provide significant employment to local community

members in the Honde Valley. Their outreach initiatives include constructing Chikaka Primary School and Humble Honie (a bee keeping initiative providing hives to community members who harvest and sell almost 5 tons of honey annually). In addition, they provide conservation support to Nyanga National Park and road maintenance.

“We have to meaningfully demonstrate that there are significant benefits derived from the natural environment when we sincerely and collectively work to protect it” said Cragg.

SkyWalk and SkyLine

In 2014 Far and Wide demonstrated inventiveness in conceptualising the SkyWalk that would boost the Eastern Highlands and Nyanga National Park's tourism industry.

“During that period a number of businesses, including bed and breakfasts, hotels, lodges and inns, were closing as a result of financial difficulties. It was difficult to keep things running at such a time. The idea of the Mutarazi Falls SkyWalk and SkyLine was our answer,” said the director.

13 DESTINATION ZW EDITION 8

After a year of construction, the SkyWalk and SkyLine were finally completed and opened to the public in December 2017.

“According to our understanding, the SkyWalk and SkyLine are the tallest zipline and cable suspended footbridge in the world, respectively, over the second-highest waterfall in Africa at 762 meters high,” he said.

The SkyWalk and SkyLine were constructed to international standards and in some aspects set new benchmarks, meeting all civil engineering requirements and going through a rigorous engineering, ZimParks, ecological and community sign-off process. It was constructed with the utmost consideration for the environment under National Parks guidance.

Cragg is enthusiastic about the SkyWalk and SkyLine’s popularity as a driving force behind the Eastern Highlands' economic transformation. Since it was established, Zimbabwe's tourist sector has benefited from the success and is destined for increased growth.

“Post the development of the SkyWalk there have been numerous re-openings of different hospitality businesses in the area. The Eastern Highlands had become a forgotten destination until the building of the SkyWalk and SkyLine, but Nyanga's tourism has been reinvigorated; we are grateful to be part of this positive upturn” said Cragg.

SkyDeck Mountain Retreat:

The first five-star lodge in the Eastern Highlands is called The SkyDeck Mountain Retreat. Exclusivity is on another level with a max of ten guests, this bespoke boutique mountain lodge with its dramatic unobstructed views of the Nyanga National Park, is one of a kind.

A rejuvenating peace is tangible as the lodge immerses you into the magnificent Mount Nyangani, Pungwe Gorge and Honde Valley surrounds. It opened in 2020 primarily as an exclusive high-end destination.

“Zimbabwe's first ultra-luxury boutique mountain resort has been a major accomplishment”.

There is no doubt that such innovations by Far and Wide over the years have had a significant effect on the positive development of the Eastern Highlands and tourism in Zimbabwe in general, as evidenced by Far and Wide being awarded “Tourism Business of the Year” and “Tourism Innovation” (Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe - 2017).

A Baptism By Kayaking Text by Martin Chemhere

For the thrill-seeker, few adventures compare to the untamed power of whitewater kayaking.

Zimbabwe offers a world-class whitewater experience on the mighty Zambezi River, a churning torrent that carves its path through the heart of the country, culminating in a spectacular descent below Victoria Falls. Paddling through this iconic landscape is an unforgettable journey, a test of physical prowess and a baptism by exhilarating rapids.

The Mighty Zambezi: A River of Contrasts

The Zambezi River below Victoria Falls is a unique ecosystem, transitioning from the tranquil expanse of Lake Kariba upstream to a dramatic gorge carved by millennia of rushing water. This dramatic shift creates a diverse paddling experience. The upper sections offer scenic stretches of calm water, perfect for admiring the surrounding wildlife and the verdant African landscape. Here, pods of hippos’ laze in the shallows, crocodiles bask on the riverbanks, and a vibrant tapestry of birds fills the air with their calls.

As you paddle further downstream, the river transforms into a formidable force. The iconic Batoka Gorge, a deep chasm carved by the relentless power of the Zambezi, marks the beginning of a series of exhilarating rapids.

At this point, the previously calm river awakens, churning through the gorge with impressive force. Kayakers navigate a series of class IV and V rapids, names like "Oblivion" and "Boiling Pot" hinting at the intensity of the experience.

These stretches demand focused paddling, teamwork, and a healthy dose of courage as you manoeuvre through turbulent waters, dodging obstacles and riding the waves.

Zimbabwe, a nation renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, has long been a captivating destination for travellers worldwide.

However, in recent years, there has been a growing shift towards responsible tourism practices, ensuring that tourism benefits both visitors and the country alike. This article explores the rise of responsible tourism in Zimbabwe, its key principles, and the positive impact it has on the nation's environment, communities, and overall development.

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 8 34

Responsible tourism, also known as sustainable tourism, goes beyond simply enjoying the beauty of a destination. It encompasses a holistic approach that considers the environmental, social, and economic impacts of tourism activities. Here are some key principles that underpin responsible tourism in Zimbabwe:

Responsible tourism practices prioritize the protection of Zimbabwe's diverse ecosystems and wildlife (environmental conservation). This includes minimizing waste generation, using water and energy resources efficiently, and supporting initiatives that conserve endangered species and habitats.

National parks and conservancies like Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park exemplify this commitment, implementing eco-friendly practices and actively engaging in wildlife conservation efforts.

The practice of responsible tourism recognizes the importance of local communities and strives to ensure they benefit from tourism activities (community empowerment). This can involve employing local people in various aspects of the tourism

industry, supporting local businesses and artisans, and fostering cultural exchange opportunities. Initiatives like community-run lodges and cultural tours empower local communities, allowing them to participate in tourism development and improve their livelihoods.

The embrace of responsible tourism in Zimbabwe has yielded a multitude of positive impacts such as environmental protection, economic growth and cultural preservation.

Environmental protections involve practices like responsible waste management, reduced water and energy consumption, and habitat conservation contribute to preserving Zimbabwe's natural beauty for future generations. To date, the centre has saved the lives of hundreds of animals, educated thousands of mainly young school-going children, and provided space for volunteers to learn, and for local and international visitors seeking for that special and close-knit interaction with wildlife under rehabilitation.

“We are the first primate rehabilitation centre to be oriented specifically to the rehab and release of African primates. The success rate of primate releases in Southern Africa – carried out by qualified operators – is an admirable 97%,” she said.

The Genesis of Free 2 Be Wild

The story of FTBW begins with Baye Pigors, a former tour guide whose life intertwined with animals from a young age. Witnessing firsthand the plight of injured, orphaned, and illegally kept wildlife ignited a spark within her. The dream of creating a sanctuary, a space where these animals could receive care, recover, and potentially return to the wild, blossomed. Fuelled by unwavering determination and a growing network of supporters,

Baye embarked on a mission to make the dream a reality. In 2013, amidst challenges and bureaucratic hurdles, FTBW opened its doors, welcoming its first residents: a pair of orphaned owlets in addition to Umfazi, the orphaned boon. The organisation was later officially registered in 2014.

Humble Beginnings

The initial years were marked by tireless efforts. With limited resources and a dedicated team of volunteers, the sanctuary slowly expanded its infrastructure, building enclosures, acquiring medical equipment, and fostering partnerships with veterinarians and wildlife experts. Each rescued animal brought its own unique story, requiring specialized care and rehabilitation tailored to their specific needs.

Over time, FTBW transformed into a haven for a diverse array of wildlife. From majestic birds of prey soaring through the sky to playful primates swinging through the trees, the sanctuary became a vibrant tapestry of life. Each resident arrived with a distinct history: orphaned cubs separated from their mothers,

confiscated animals from illegal trade, and injured creatures nursed back to health.

Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release

The core mission of FTBW has always been threefold: rescue, rehabilitation, and release. Rescuing animals from a variety of situations, including poaching, illegal pet trade, and habitat loss, forms the first crucial step. The sanctuary provides immediate care, addressing injuries, malnutrition, and psychological trauma.

The rehabilitation process is often lengthy and painstaking. Dedicated staff, veterinarians, and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure each animal receives the necessary medical attention, nutritional support, and species-specific enrichment. The ultimate goal, however, remains to release animals back into their natural habitats, allowing them to reclaim their wild independence.

“The joy of witnessing a rehabilitated animal soar back into the sky, scamper back into the forest, or return to dams or lakes is unparalleled. Each release serves as a testament to the

dedication and expertise of the team, and a beacon of hope for the future of wildlife conservation,” said the founder of the sanctuary.

Educating and Inspiring

FTBW’s impact extends beyond direct animal care. The sanctuary serves as an educational hub, raising awareness about the threats faced by wildlife, the importance of conservation, and the individual efforts that can make a difference. Educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and community outreach initiatives connect people with the wonders of the animal kingdom and empower them to become advocates for change.

The centre is actively changing the perception of primates from being considered nuisances to being recognized as valuable contributors to ecosystems. Their efforts in education include a school program that teaches children about the significance of primates and how to coexist with them.

Additionally, the sanctuary plan to extend their impact by launching a program for villages affected by primate crop raiding, focusing on finding sustainable solutions to mitigate conflicts and protect both the livelihoods of the villagers and the primates.

The sanctuary is making a significant impact by providing a haven for

injured, orphaned, and confiscated animals and birds. This is crucial at a time when wildlife species, including the critically endangered pangolin, are facing a rapid decline and need a second chance to thrive in their natural habitats.

Milestones

As FTBW celebrates its tenth anniversary, it reflects on a decade of remarkable achievements. Thousands of animals have received care and a second chance at life. Countless individuals have been touched by the sanctuary’s mission, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for wildlife.

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 8 44

Throughout their journey, FTBW has collaborated with numerous organizations, including Nikela, people who help conservationists, which was established by the dynamic duo of Margrit and Russ Harris. The Harris couple’s invaluable support in spreading awareness about the sanctuary, their generous donations, and their assistance in facilitating releases have left a lasting impact on its work.

In 2021, the organisation made a significant accomplishment by partnering with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife to release a troop of rescued vervets into a national park in Zimbabwe. This release marked a historic event, as it was the first recorded troop reintroduction in Zimbabwe since the 1970s when a troop of monkeys was released onto an island in Kariba.

Under the authority of Zimparks, FTBW is a recognized organization with the responsibility of rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing orphaned animals, and providing care for injured wildlife. In her mission to provide a home for and to rehabilitate suffering primates and other wildlife species, Baye duly received the coveted ‘Unsung Conservation Hero’s Award 2016’ from by Africa Geographic. “However, the journey is far from over. The threats to wildlife persist, and the need for rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation remains critical. The centre continues to strive for a future where all animals can thrive in their natural habitats, free from exploitation and harm,” notes Baye.

Call to Action

The tenth anniversary of FTBW serves as an opportunity not only to celebrate past achievements but also to look towards the future with renewed commitment. The sanctuary invites individuals and communities to join their mission in various ways:

•Support their work: Donations, volunteering opportunities, and sponsorships allow the sanctuary to continue providing vital care and rehabilitation services.

•Raise awareness: Spreading the word about the sanctuary’s mission and the threats faced by wildlife can inspire others to take action.

•Make responsible choices: Supporting ethical wildlife-related businesses, reducing our ecological footprint, and advocating for stronger wildlife protection policies can create a ripple effect of positive change.

As FTBW embarks on the next chapter, the hope remains the same: a world where humans and animals coexist in harmony, and all creatures can roam free in their natural habitat. By joining hands and taking collective action.

The hotel sector’s favourite bed brand Unpacking Text by Martin Chemhere DESTINATION ZW EDITION 8 46

Restapedic Bedding, the top producer of beds and mattresses in Zimbabwe, maintains its market dominance in both domestic and international markets with its Firm Bed brand, which provides reasonably priced, high-quality sleep.

Since it has been on the market for more than a decade, this kind of bed has undergone further development thanks to new technology and the company’s access to a larger variety of raw materials. The continuous improvements have mostly been based on input from hotels. A void in the Zimbabwean market for high quality hotel beds served as the impetus for the creation of the Firm Bed brand, according to Denise Collet, Marketing Manager at Restapedic Bedding.

“Many of the country’s hotels and lodges were searching for mattresses and beds that were the best fit for the hospitality sector. In response, we produced a product of the greatest calibre, making it easier for Zimbabwean hotels and lodges to source bedding locally,” she said.

Restapedic brand history and philosophy:

Restapedic began as a small family-owned company operating out of a shipping container that was modified. There are now over 120 employees, up from only a small number of them—the majority of them are still employed by the company today. They currently occupy the second-largest bed factory in southern Africa, a 17,000 square metre fully automated facility.

The company’s attitude remains unchanged, as they strive to produce top-notch items at reasonable costs, even with their remarkable success.

“Not only are all Firm Beds constructed fit for royalty, but so are all those with the means to purchase them. We want the global market and our fellow citizens to feel comfortable using Zimbabwean companies because we have worked incredibly hard to produce things that are on par with or better than imported ones,” said Collet.

The making of the Firm Bed:

High quality materials are utilised to meet the needs of the guest because hotel beds are continuously used by visitors of all weights, with varying sleeping preferences, and some with medical concerns. The bed has the resilience required to sustain a wide variety of weights thanks to a bonnell spring system with wave and side supports. This gives the bed longevity and provides excellent spinal support for the user.

The mattress has multiple layers of foam inside it that give it a medium firm sensation while also softening it. Some visitors might prefer a softer bed, so not all will desire something extremely firm. Because bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic and has a high moisture absorption capacity, it is a great choice for a variety of hotel visitors. Bamboo is appropriate for both hot and cold weather.

Rather than only pleasing certain members of a household, the Firm Bed has been thoughtfully developed to satisfy a wide range of folks all at once. The illusion has been created that the guest personally selected the bed.

The typical mattress is medium firm, but if the customer requests it, the manufacturer can make the mattress stiffer.

Even the pickiest visitors’ needs will be met by the way the bed is made.

By adapting to the user’s body weight, the pocket springs stop pressure points from building up. An additional layer of comfort and joint health benefits are provided by the copperinfused gel topping that covers the mattress.

“Distinctive innovations distinguish our Firm Bed brand from rivals.

Our highly skilled employees collaborate with our state-of-the-art gear in our fully automated facility to ensure that every mattress is prepared to the highest standards.,” said the marketing manager.

Eco-friendly aspects and sleep:

Because some of the foam layers in the mattress are composed of recycled foam (Rebond foam), the construction of the bed has some environmentally beneficial features.

There’s also bamboo fabric. The bed plays a significant role in enhancing the entire guest experience in hotels since the mattresses are exceptionally comfortable and allow guests to obtain a good night’s sleep. Restapedic Bedding is in a strong position to grow going forward, as the Firm Bed is currently the market leader in Zimbabwe and is also making inroads into the adjacent region.

New Airport For

Mutare
58 DESTINATION ZW EDITION 8

The growth of the tourism industry in Mutare, in the Eastern Highlands has for a long time been hindered by several things. These include limited air connections, especially to major international hubs, making the region less accessible to tourists compared to other destinations and high cost of air travel, particularly for budget travellers, who are potentially discouraged from visiting the region.

Other setbacks for the region are infrastructure limitations as a result of poor road conditions and a lack of public transport options. Another likelihood is that the region might not be effectively marketed to potential tourists, leading to low awareness and interest even with adequate air connectivity.

There is also the appeal of slow travel and adventure due to some tourists deliberately choosing slower overland travel options to experience the region's scenery and culture more deeply, rather than relying on air transport.

It's also worth noting that air transport can also be a facilitator of tourism growth by enabling faster and more convenient access to the region for certain types of tourists.

Additionally, improving air infrastructure could be part of a broader strategy to address other hindrances, such as supporting the development of local tourism businesses and promoting sustainable practices.

However, the good news is that the government of Zimbabwe plans to build a new, contemporary airport by moving the Grand Reef Airport from the city of Mutare to Mutasa South District.

Adequate flat land, necessary for the development of airports has been cited by the government as the reason for the relocation of the Grand Rief Airport near Mutare to Mutasa South District.

The government has already made initial steps towards the establishment of the airport, with Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, accompanied by other government officials touring the proposed new airport site.

Significant progress has been made by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe in carrying out feasibility studies for the new airport project.

The feasibility studies are expected to be completed by the end of this year 2024.

With Manicaland being a significant tourism hub, the new airport should ease the movement of travellers to and from the region, as travelling time by air from Harare will be about 30 minutes only.

Furthermore, the government is complementing the construction of the new airport with the concurrent rehabilitation of roads in Mutare.
