Foreword from Our CEO

Step inside the pages of our 2025 Yearbook, and you’ll instantly feel the vibrant spirit of Lusitânia Primary School—a school where curiosity sparkles, friendships blossom, and every child’s talents are discovered, nurtured and celebrated.

At Lusitânia, learning is multi-faceted with a unique Lusophonic dimension added. Our holistic approach means that from the earliest days in Early Childhood Development all the way to Grade 7, every pupil is immersed in a world that intertwines the Cambridge Early Learning / Primary Years and ZIMSEC curricula.

But it doesn’t stop at academics! Whether it’s scoring goals on the field, dazzling on stage, or discovering new rhythms in cultural activities, every child is encouraged to give things a go, explore, and grow. Here, every day brings new possibilities and exciting challenges, helping our learners evolve into confident, creative, and compassionate young people.

Guided by our inspirational teachers, instructors and coaches our pupils discover that there are no limits to what they can achieve. “Believe” and “Achieve” aren’t just slogans; they’re woven into the very fabric of our school life, reminding us to strive, unite, and celebrate every success, big or small, as well as to understand that failing is a stepping stone to mastery.

It’s no surprise that all of our Grade 7 pupils earn places at the high schools of their choice, especially within the prestigious members of the Association of Trust Schools. Lusitânia alumni don’t just blend in—they stand out! Whether it’s leading teams, excelling in academics, or contributing to the spirit of their new schools, they are recognised as high achievers and all-rounders, always ready to participate.

As you journey through this yearbook, you’ll see stories of discovery, curiosity, leadership, and determination. The Lusitania family is a tapestry of achievements, kindness to each other, and engaged participation—in classrooms, on sports fields, on stage and behind many musical instruments. So, let’s celebrate another year of growth, discovery, and unity.

Here’s to the memories created and the bright future that awaits every Lusitânia pupil!

Thank you for choosing Lusitânia!

Nurturing Excellence: A Year of Triumph in Academics, Sports, and Culture

At Lusitânia Primary School, our mission is built upon a dynamic and mutually reinforcing foundation:

Academics, Sports, and Culture. This year, I am delighted to report that our collective commitment to this holistic vision has yielded truly outstanding results, with our students achieving remarkable success across all three pillars1. We are not simply educating; we are nurturing wellrounded global citizens ready to make their mark.

The Academic Ascent: Seamless Integration and Superior Results Our core focus this year has been on enriching and future-proofing our curriculum. We have successfully implemented the new Heritage Based Curriculum (HBC), running it in parallel with our established Cambridge curriculum. This dual-track approach ensures our pupils receive a robust foundation in core subjects like English, Mathematics and Science, while also deeply connecting with local heritage and project-based learning.

The hard work of both students and staff is clearly reflected in our exam results:

• Outstanding Cambridge Checkpoint Achievement

• Our 2024 Grade 6 students demonstrated high levels of proficiency, with the majority of the 64 candidates achieving outstanding and high grades.

Our commitment to a diversified skill set shines brightly through our specialized programs:

Specialised Certifications:

• Microsoft IC3 Literacy: All 33 candidates successfully passed the Microsoft IC3 Spark Examinations in 2024.

• University of West London: 15 learners achieved certification in the prestigious University of West London LCME Music Program (piano and violin).

• CHISZ Examinations: Our pupils performed exceptionally well in the CHISZ Computers examinations, securing 39 Distinctions and 11 Credits.

• The Power of Language: Our focus on oral language development in the Portuguese Department is paying dividends, with 15 successful passes in the 2024 Institute Camões Examinations.

We are also looking forward to expanding our technical capabilities, with the ICT Department planning to introduce an expanded Robotics Programme (ECD-G7), aiming for participation in national competitions.

Sporting Glory: Dominance on the Field

Excellence is not confined to the classroom. Our Sports Department has had a year of phenomenal success, cementing Lusitânia’s reputation as a top competitor in CHISZ leagues. Our students’ discipline and dedication have translated into multiple championship titles:

Athletics and Cross Country: We were crowned Zone and District Champions in the Golden League Athletics and took first place at the highly competitive St. Michael’s Cross Country Champions (1st out of 24 schools).

Team Sports Triumph: Our U13 Netball team secured 1st place at the EPSA Netball Tournament, a truly outstanding achievement!

• Our Football and Rugby teams also had strong performances, with the U13 Football team remaining undefeated in major tournaments and one of our players being awarded Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Provincial Recognition: The depth of talent in our school is clear, with multiple students selected for the Harare Province CHISZ teams: 6 for Football, 5 for Netball, and 4 for Hockey. We even had a swimmer compete internationally in Dubai!

Partnership and Infrastructure: We are thrilled to announce that Simbisa Brands joined Lusitânia as a sponsor or partner. Furthermore, our successful Sponsored Spelling Event in Term 1 directly funded a significant infrastructure upgrade: the installation of solar water heaters for the Main and ECD swimming pools, extending our training capabilities year-round. We now need to acquire pool blankets. To further support this success, we have installed a heated swimming pool system and have ambitious plans to re-grass the main sports field and build 6 concrete cricket nets— crucial steps to aligning us with the best cricket-playing schools.

A Flourishing Culture: International and Local Acclaim

The creativity, confidence, and passion of our students have been showcased spectacularly through our thriving Culture pillar. Our pupils are not just participating; they are competing and excelling on both the national and international stage.

Highlights of the year include:

International Performance: Our school choir proudly represented Zimbabwe on the global stage, earning national colours and prestigious recognition at the Lisbon Sings Competitions in Portugal and the World Choral Cup in Spain in 2024. This year, they plan an exciting European Tour to sing at the Vatican, Spain and France.

Dramatic Arts: The fantastic performance of “Shrek the Musical Junior” was a resounding success, performed for three days in Harare and followed by a successful tour to Bulawayo.

Clubs and Competitions:

Our pupils are demonstrating excellent performance in the spoken arts, achieving Distinctions in Duo Poetry and Choral Speaking at the National Institute of Allied Arts Speech and Drama Festival 2025. Furthermore, the success of our Spelling Bee students, who placed 3rd, 5th, and 7th in Zimbabwe’s top 10, shows the strength of our fundamental literacy programs. Our compulsory and optional clubs— ranging from Robotics, Mbira, Marimba, SDG, Debate (only to mention a few) — are the engine room of this creativity, allowing every student to find and develop their unique talent.

Strengthening the Academic Core: Professionalism and Innovation

To ensure sustained excellence, we have invested heavily in our staff and are strategically planning for our infrastructure.

Staff Specialization: Our commitment to specialized learning support has been deepened by Mrs. Mabhena and Mrs. Brown completing their NILD Search and Teach qualifications, while other Mr Mazarura gained certification in the NILD Rx4 Maths and Mrs Kanyangarara gained Rx for Discovery Reading Programs certification.

ICT Recognition : The school was recognised at Schoolscape Zimbabwe as a Microsoft Expert School, the only one out of 2 of all ATS schools in Zimbabwe chosen to showcase our innovative ICT practices. Recently, we won the Smart Education Primary School’s Award at the Smart Zimbabwe conference Our students exhibited their creativity to the attendees and Guests of honour who included the Minister of ICTPS Honourable Tatenda Mavetera who was amazed of their exhibitions in robotic, Lego and STEM.

Moving Forward: Character Counts

Our academic theme this year, “Life Skills: Character Counts,” underpins everything we do. The success across academics, sports, and culture is not just about scores and trophies; it’s about the confident, resilient, and well-rounded character of our students. From the successful Fun Run, which promoted staff and student wellness, to the essential work of our Counselling Department addressing academic stress and emotional regulation, we are focused on the holistic development of every child.

I thank our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and the Board for their unwavering commitment. Together, we are ensuring Lusitânia Primary School continues to be a beacon of excellence and a nurturing ground for the leaders of tomorrow.

ECD DEPARTMENT

What a joyful journey it’s been!

This year, our ECD A and B learners have blossomed in every way. They have grown in confidence, curiosity, and kindness.

From the first day of first term, to our ECD B Graduation, each child has brought their own sparkle to our department.

This year we introduced Search and Teach therapy as a provision to our students who experience learning difficulties.

This ensures that no learner is left behind and that we are able to identify a students strengths and weaknesses early to ensure they have a more productive academic journey.

In ECD B classes, we explored the theme, Around the World through play, stories, music, and movement. Whether we were building castles in the sandpit, painting masterpieces, or learning about places near and far, every moment was filled with laughter and learning.

ECD A classes explored the transport theme where they brought in toy construction vehicles, and did role plays to learn more about pilots, flight attendants and various airport jobs.

Our Tackie Day theme was an unforgettable highlight this year that showcased our creativity and team spirit. We used this event as a fundraiser and we were able to purchase new graduation gowns for our learners.

This year we visited the Lion and Cheetah Park, Mooland, St Elmos, The Studio and JumpZim for our class trips. Class trips are a lovely way of getting students to make a real-life connection to the themes they explore in the classroom.

We’ve watched friendships bloom, independence flourish, and imaginations soar. These little learners have shown us that big dreams start small and that every scribble, question, and giggle matters.

To our incredible ECD A and B students: thank you for the joy you’ve shared and the memories we’ve made. We can’t wait to see the amazing adventures that await you in Grade 1.

Infants Department… here we come!

INFANTS DEPARTMENT

As we approach the close of 2025, I firmly reflect on our significant progress and outstanding achievements as a department. This year began exceptionally well, supported by a strong team of four dedicated teachers.

Our department continues to thrive, driven by our clear motto: “Reader, Writer, and Problem Solver.” This guiding principle is the bedrock of our efforts in reading, writing, and numeracy. We establish a solid foundation for both the ZIMSEC and Cambridge syllabi, ensuring our students acquire essential literacy skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

From grade one, we emphasize cursive handwriting instruction, enabling our students to join letters seamlessly as they advance through the grades. We employ a phonetic approach to reading based on Letterland, and I take pride in declaring that all our learners write legibly and excel as readers. Through our Science and Technology and Heritage Social Studies programs, we challenge our children to think creatively and engage in varied and impactful projects (examples can be found below).

Our grade 1 and 2 students participated in educational tours that significantly enhanced their learning experiences. Grade 1s explored Kuimbashiri in Norton and Mooland in Mazoe, while grade 2s visited Ewanrig Botanical Gardens in Shamva and St. Elmo's in Harare. These excursions expose our learners to real-world applications of classroom concepts, fostering a mindset that goes beyond traditional learning and encourages exploration of the natural world.

Moreover, our department actively engages in charity work, instilling the values of helping and giving from an early age. Together, children and teachers visited Kasipiti Orphanage, where we generously donated groceries and clothing. We sincerely thank the Middle Department and ECDs for their collaborative spirit in this important initiative. This experience was both enjoyable and transformative for our children.

Our learners have excelled in a variety of activities, including Allied Arts, Sports, Carnaval, and Africa Day. Our Africa Day celebration was particularly noteworthy, showcasing vibrant decorations and authentic African cuisine (see pictures below). Additionally, the children’s presentation of the “Nativity Play” during their prize-giving ceremony was impressive, with their Christmas Carols bringing the audience into the festive spirit.

These achievements are the result of the unwavering dedication of our highly qualified and skilled teachers in the Infants Department. Their competence and creativity, coupled with a nurturing attitude, play a crucial role in guiding our little ones throughout the year. We have seen our learners flourish, enhancing both their physical growth and confidence, for which I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our remarkable educators.

As we move forward, we take pride in promoting our grade 2s to the Middle Department next year, confident that we have established a robust foundation for their continued success. For our grade 1s, we will maintain a strong focus on nurturing their development and reinforcing the concepts learned across various subjects.

I firmly express my gratitude to our Board of Governors and Management for their steadfast support; they are consistently present for us. To the outstanding staff, I offer a heartfelt thank you for your instructional expertise and relentless commitment to shaping these young minds. To our parents, thank you for your unwavering love and support throughout the year.

MIDDLE PRIMARY DEPARTMENT

Nurturing Growth, Exploration, and Achievement

In the Middle Primary Department, we are committed to nurturing each child's journey through growth, exploration, and achievement. Our learning environment encourages students to discover new ideas, build confidence through hands-on experiences, and celebrate their progress as they develop into independent and enthusiastic learners.

Our 2025 Grade 3, 4, and 5 learners began the year with remarkable enthusiasm and commitment. We are proud to highlight their academic progress and the enriching experiences from their educational excursions. Their energy, dedication, and eagerness to learn set a vibrant tone for the year ahead.

At Lusitania Primary School, student success remains our core focus. Our passionate educators continue to provide a dynamic and well-rounded education that equips learners for an ever-evolving world.

The Middle Department serves as a crucial bridge between the Infant and Upper Primary phases, with two classes per grade. Our team of six dedicated educators ensures a smooth and supportive transition:

Grade 3: Mrs. Munhenga and Mrs. Maphosa

Grade 4: Mrs. Muchetu and Mr. Mafaune

Grade 5: Ms. Kanyangarara and Ms. Sabau

Through innovative teaching strategies, we build on foundational skills, foster academic momentum, and prepare learners to embrace the challenges and opportunities of upper primary education.

Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring (CEM): In a significant development for 2025, all learners from Grade 3 to Grade 5 were included in the CEM programme. This initiative helps identify individual strengths and areas for improvement early on, allowing educators to tailor support and interventions. The detailed reports generated for each learner have proven invaluable in guiding instruction and enhancing mastery of key concepts. Our department continues to achieve outstanding results in both Cambridge and ZIMSEC assessments, a testament to our commitment to academic excellence and consistency.

The Life Skills curriculum is integrated into weekly lessons and assembly presentations. Key areas of focus include:

"Stepping Up, Standing Tall"

As we close another vibrant chapter in the Upper Primary journey, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the remarkable strides students and staff have made this year. It has been a season of growth, achievement, and transition—each moment adding depth to the tapestry of our school’s story.

Welcomes and Farewells

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Mutasa to the Upper Primary department. His wealth of experience and infectious energy have already begun to enrich our learning environment. At the same time, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Ms. Sabau, who transitioned to the Middle Department. Her tenure in Upper Primary was marked by maturity, integrity, and a deep commitment to student development. She leaves behind a legacy of excellence and compassion.

Academic Excellence and Transitions

Our Grade 7 learners soared to new heights, with nearly all securing placements at their high schools of choice—a testament to their hard work, resilience, and the unwavering support of their teachers and families. Meanwhile, our Grade 6s rose to the challenge of the CEM examinations, demonstrating commendable focus and determination.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our Grade 6 learners embarked on an enlightening tour of Parliament, where they gained firsthand insight into the roles of elected representatives and the workings of various ministries. Their visit to Heroes Acre deepened their appreciation for the sacrifices made by national heroes—a poignant reminder of the values we strive to instil in every learner .

Leadership and Character Building

As future leaders of the school, the Grade 6s also attended a transformative leadership camp in Nyanga. There, they were challenged to build resilience, foster cooperation, and embrace teamwork—skills that will serve them well both within and beyond the school gates.

Cultural and Historical Immersion

Our Grade 7s explored the Liberation Centre, where they delved into the rich history of Zimbabwe and experienced the traditional Shona village setup.

This excursion not only broadened their historical understanding but also deepened their cultural roots.

As we reflect on the year’s accomplishments, we celebrate the spirit of curiosity, courage, and community that defines Upper Primary. To our learners, thank you for your enthusiasm and growth.

To our staff, thank you for your dedication and heart. And to our parents, thank you for your unwavering partnership.

Here’s to another year of inspiring minds and shaping futures.

Warm regards,

Celebrating Portuguese Culture

At our school, we offer Portuguese language classes across all grades, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the language and culture. Recently, our Portuguese Department celebrated the Day of Camões, Portuguese Communities, and the Portuguese Language on the 10th of June; showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of Portugal.

Carnaval Fun

Our students had a blast participating in a vibrant Carnaval event themed "Flower Festival." They made beautiful paper flowers and decorated our school premises. It was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves and learning about Portuguese traditions.

Looking Ahead to the Camões Exam

We're excited to announce that our Grade 6 students will be taking the Camões exam in November this year. The Camões exam is an internationally recognized Portuguese language proficiency test, and our students are eager to showcase their skills.

Grooving to Portuguese Rhythms

The theme for our Portuguese Day celebration was Portuguese dance music, and our students had an amazing time dancing to traditional rhythms.

They especially enjoyed dancing the "marcha" and "corridinho," as well as the "vira," showcasing their newfound love for Portuguese dance and music.

In our Portuguese lessons, we use engaging activities to teach the language, including visual aids, Kahoot, Jamboard, quizzes, PowerPoints, and songs.

These interactive tools help our students learn and retain new vocabulary and grammar, making language learning fun and exciting.

ICT Department Report 2025

Motto: Aspire to Inspire

The ICT Department has once again proven itself to be a hub of creativity, innovation and excellence in 2025. Guided by our motto, “Aspire to Inspire”, our work this year has been anchored on a dynamic blend of curriculum, extracurricular activities and impactful community engagement.

At the heart of our teaching and learning, we successfully delivered three robust syllabi; CHISZ ICT, ZIMSEC and IC3 Spark (Microsoft). This strong foundation has not only ensured academic excellence but also equipped our learners with critical 21st-century digital skills. From coding basics to advanced productivity tools, pupils have demonstrated outstanding performance in both theoretical and practical aspects of ICT.

Beyond the classroom, the department runs four vibrant clubs: Kidz in Tech Robotics Club, Lego Robotics Club, ICT Club (specialising in web development) and the Drone Club.

Each club has been a space for learners to stretch their imaginations and apply their skills to real-world challenges. This year, our pupils proudly showcased their projects at prestigious events including the Schoolscape Zimbabwe Conference, the Smart Zimbabwe Conference and Expo, the school’s Club Exhibition Day and the Lusitania Open Day.

The Lego Robotics Club particularly shone when it organised a fascinating two-day trip on 3D printing excursion to Bushman Rock in Term 2, which opened new horizons for our young innovators.

Our state-of-the-art computer lab, furnished with modern facilities and the latest technology, continues to be a source of inspiration for learners from ECD A to Grade 7. Weekly ICT lessons have become the highlight of the timetable, as pupils eagerly engage in activities that combine learning with fun. No child wants to miss out!

The department also prides itself on maintaining a dynamic website and engaging social media platforms, which remain rich with updates, news and success stories. These channels not only showcase our learners’ creativity but also serve as a bridge linking the school community with the global digital world.

Importantly, we believe in giving back. Through proceeds from our 2024 fundraising movie night, the ICT Department proudly donated coded bins to the school. This initiative reflects our commitment to promoting a Green School, blending technology and sustainability, while encouraging responsible e-waste management. The year also brought with it moments of recognition. We hosted the annual Schoolscape Zimbabwe event, showcasing our Microsoft Expert skills to fellow ATS schools, while one other private school presented the Apple route.

Our efforts were further crowned when the department scooped the Smart Zimbabwe Award for Primary Schools. This prestigious award, presented by the Honourable Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, at the Golden Conifer on 18 July 2025, remains a milestone achievement.

Looking ahead, we are thrilled about our upcoming fundraising movie night, which promises to be bigger and better. Families can look forward to an afternoon filled

with VR games, computer games, trampolines, jumping castles and mouthwatering food stalls, followed by an unforgettable movie experience.

The event is not just about raising funds but about building stronger family bonds and celebrating the spirit of community bond over innovation and entertainment.

As we close 2025, the ICT Department celebrates not just its achievements but its enduring mission to inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and digital leaders.

Mathematics Learning Support Report 2025

We started the year well after receiving very good feedback from both Cambridge Checkpoint mathematics results and ZIMSEC examinations. Our focus this year was on interventions for learners with learning difficulties (ADD / ADHD).

I visited Hellenic and Sharon School learner support centers in October 2024 to learn more on learner interventions. After the visits I presented a staff development workshop on Dyscalculia in Mathematics. Lorna McCosh from The Institute for Learning Development had a presentation at Lusitania on Attention Deficient Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). On 31 May 2025 Mrs. Nyambi and I completed a NILD R X 4 Discovery Mathematics Course.

A range of strategies are focused on improving academic skills, addressing specific learning challenges, and fostering a supportive learning environment. The pupils are being exposed to: Individualized and Differentiated instruction, Multisensory instruction, Immediate Feedback, etc. Mathematics results from assessments and mid-year exams indicate pupils are progressing most satisfactorily. We have acquired a state-of-the-art magnetic whiteboard making teaching a lot easier and more fun.

The Centre has been re-named Da Gama Diagnostic Learning Support Centre.

I look forward to a remedial languages teacher joining our team in the new year.

CULTURE DEPARTMENT

At Lusitania Primary School, creativity is not just encouraged, it is woven into the fabric of everyday learning. The Culture Department stands as a vibrant hub of artistic expression, offering a dynamic and inclusive programme that nurtures young talent in music, dance, drama, and visual arts.

From the rhythmic pulse of marimbas and the harmonies of the choir echoing through the corridors, to the colourful student artwork adorning classroom walls. Lusitania celebrates the arts as a vital part of holistic education. The department is more than an extracurricular offering; it’s a thriving community where learners explore their identity, build confidence, and express themselves freely.

Voices from the Heart of the Programme “Our music sessions are the best part of my week,” says Bethel Mazango, a Grade 7 student who plays the violin. “It helps me express myself in ways I never thought is possible.”

Miss Alwanger, one of the school’s visual arts teachers, shares her pride in the students’ growth: “Art gives our learners a voice. Some of the most reserved children come alive when they’re painting or sculpting. It’s beautiful to witness.”Grade 7 student Waishe Nyaruvanga, a choir member, adds, “Singing in the choir has taught me teamwork and discipline. We are like a family, we support each other and grow together.”

Through these voices, it’s clear that Lusitania’s Culture Department is more than a programme it’s a movement that empowers young minds, celebrates diversity, and builds a strong foundation for lifelong appreciation of the arts.

THE HEARTBEAT OF CREATIVITY AT LUSITANIA PRIMARY SCHOOL MUSIC

Music is a cornerstone of Lusitania’s cultural programme. Students are introduced to a wide range of instruments, from traditional Zimbabwean mbiras and marimbas to modern keyboards and recorders. The school choir, a proud ensemble of passionate young vocalists, regularly performs at school events and competitions, earning accolades and admiration.

Mr. Zimbeva, one of the music instructors, believes music is a powerful tool for development. “Music teaches discipline, patience, and teamwork. It’s amazing to see how students grow not just musically, but also personally.”

Celebrating Culture Through Dance and Tradition

Beyond music, Lusitania’s Culture Department places a strong emphasis on traditional Zimbabwean mbira music and storytelling. Learners participate in cultural showcases where they perform dances, recite poetry, and dramatize folktales that reflect the country’s rich heritage.

A Grade 4 student, Asriel Kadyamurandu shares, “I love playing mbira in our cultural group. It makes me proud to be Zimbabwean and helps me learn about where I come from.”

These activities are not only entertaining, but they are also educational. They instil a sense of identity, pride, and respect for diversity, helping students appreciate both their own culture and those of others.

Visual Arts: A Canvas for Imagination

The visual arts programme at Lusitania is equally impressive. From painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media, students are encouraged to explore their creativity and develop their artistic voice.

The school regularly hosts exhibitions where learners’ work is displayed for parents and the community to admire. The visual arts curriculum is designed to be inclusive and exploratory, allowing students to experiment with different styles and techniques while learning about famous artists and cultural art forms.

Building Confidence and Community

What makes Lusitania’s Culture Department truly special is its ability to foster a sense of belonging and confidence among students. Whether they are performing on stage, painting a mural, or dancing in a group, learners are given the space to express themselves freely and authentically. Teachers and staff work closely with students to ensure that every child, regardless of skill level, feels valued and encouraged. The department’s inclusive approach ensures that creativity is accessible to all.

A Legacy of Artistic Excellence

Lusitania Primary School’s Culture Department is more than just a collection of programmes it’s a philosophy. It reflects the school’s belief that education should nurture the whole child, cultivating not only intellect but imagination, empathy, and cultural awareness. As Lusitania continues to grow and evolve, its Culture Department remains a shining example of what’s possible when creativity is placed at the heart of learning. It’s a place where young minds are inspired, talents are discovered, and the spirit of Zimbabwean culture is kept alive through the joyful expression of its future leaders.

Interhouse Public Speaking

Students from grades 3 to 7 showcased their public speaking skills with confidence. It was inspiring to see our students deliver well-thought-out speeches on a variety of topics, demonstrating their creativity and eloquence. Our overall winner for the 2025 competition was Kristal Munzvengi, representing Gama, who won after a heavily contested final against Ruvarashe Savanhu, representing Viriato.

Lomagundi District Cultural Festival

Our choir of fifty choristers and a group of seven visual artists travelled to Chinhoyi on the 16th of July and participated with distinction at the Districts’ Arts festival, which was hosted by Lomagundi.

Clubs Expo 2025

Our cultural programmes offer an opportunity for our students to learn critical life skills. We are happy to have this programme in our school programme as it enhances and complements the wider life of the school.

The club’s expo is an annual event that allows parents to have an appreciation of what their children have been learning. The grade 7 STEM club won this year’s overall best club trophy.

Canta Al Mar Festival Chorale Barcelona, Spain. On the international front, Lusitania was proudly represented at the prestigious Cantal Al Mar Choral Festival held in Barcelona, Spain. A coalition of schools and community children’s choir, Choice Children’s Choir, was the official Zimbabwe representatives competing in this global event, earning two silver diplomas, a testament to their hard work and musical excellence.

Pupils of Lusitania, particularly Grade 7s whose final event of this nature this will be - after spending their formative years here at Lusitania

Welcome

Thank you, parents, teachers, pupils, and friends, for joining us today as we mark the progression of another successful year. We can be proud of what we have achieved, together.

Each year, our school shows maturity and growth, expanding Lusitania’s footprint in the community and its presence amongst peer schools, especially ATS schools.

The Three Pillars of : LEARN, COMPETE, PERFORM

Academic Performance and Assessment

This year, our academic results have continued to meet our traditionally high standards. Our pupils achieved excellent results, and more students have reached or exceeded their targets than ever before.

The quality of teaching remains amongst the best in our sector. Our pass rates, overall and by subject, are right at the top of peer schools in comparison tables. Our students’ commitment and effort are clear in these positive results.

Performing Arts Distinction

We would like to share the remarkable achievements of our Culture Department throughout the year 2025. This year has been a testament to the creativity, talent, and dedication of our learners. I am delighted to highlight the milestones we have reached in the year 2025.

Our cultural activities were organized into targeted termly programs, encompassing internal, external, and interschool engagements.

Allow me to take you through some of the highlights of the year. In Term One, our learners participated in the prestigious Eisteddfod Music Festival, showcasing their talents in both Western and African music categories.

Our choirs and instrumentalists earned impressive results, receiving honours, distinctions, and merits, which were a true reflection of their hard work. Additionally, learners from Grades 3 to 7 embarked on compulsory club projects, which culminated in an impressive exhibition in August.

In Term Two, our students shone brightly at the National Institute of Allied Arts festivals, including Speech and Drama, Literary, and Visual Arts.

These platforms allowed them to demonstrate their creativity and confidence on a national stage. We also witnessed a significant increase in candidates sitting for the University of West London Music Examinations in piano, violin, and guitar, with outstanding results recorded.

Another highlight was the compulsory interhouse public speaking competition, which brought out the eloquence and courage of our learners from Grades 3 to 7.

In Term Three, we celebrated an extraordinary achievement: our Choice Children’s Choir represented Zimbabwe at the Canta al Mar Choral Festival in Spain, earning two silver diplomas. This accomplishment speaks volumes about their talent and commitment. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the parents whose generosity made this possible.

Furthermore, our ECD and Infant learners showcased their skills during their prize-giving ceremonies, reminding us that excellence begins at the earliest stages.

As we close the year, we invite you all to join us for our Carols Night, a festive family event that promises to be a memorable conclusion to our 2025 calendar.

Sporting Engagement

Our sports teams have made clear improvements in all areas. This year, we have been a force to reckon with Golden League athletics conference, cross country, cricket, football, netball, rugby, swimming, and tennis. Our pupils have trained hard, shown good sportsmanship, and learnt the life skill value of teamwork.

We post all sporting results online, so that everyone can follow our achievements. Field trips and other out-of-classroom learning experiences have also become a regular part of our school year, giving pupils more chances to learn in different settings.

Holistic Education and Experiential Learning

We are committed to helping every pupil grow in all areas, not just academics. Our goal is for each child to develop confidence, creativity, and respect for others.

Year after year, our focus on new teaching methods and varied activities helps our pupils become well-rounded individuals. Field trips and practical experiences are important parts of this improvement.

“Education is not purely about academics, about cramming knowledge and passing exams. Children will be imbalanced, incapable, incomplete if they only receive attention in one part. However, education is equally not purely about sport; it is not about cultural activities; it is not simply spiritual or social. It is fundamentally all of these together. Every child in every school must be involved and educated in all these areas”. – Tim Middleton, CEO, Association of Trust Schools.

Da

Gama

Learning Support Centre

The Da Gama Learning Support Centre has continued to make a big difference. Pupils who need extra help in mathematics or English receive targeted support. This year, more pupils have made progress through the centre.

The Centre helps students to strengthen their understanding and to build important skills, leading to better performance across subjects.

Prefect Body: A Sterling Example

I want to thank our outgoing prefect body for their strong leadership. They have set an example in responsibility and respect, helping the school improve each year.

As they leave us for high school, we wish them continued success and hope their efforts are rewarded in their chosen schools.

The Power of Consistency: Anecdote

I would like to share a simple story. Imagine a student who reads for a short time each night. At first, the progress seems small, but each day adds up. By the end of the year, this student has finished many books and improved their reading skills. This shows that doing a little every day leads to big improvements over time.

Thank you and a fond farewell… Thank you to our pupils for your hard work and positive attitude, to our teachers for your dedication, and to our parents for your ongoing support. Thank you to the Board of Governors for their dependable and entrusting support throughout the year.

Our school has grown and improved this year in every area. I am excited to see even more steps taken toward greatness next year.

I especially wish our Grade 7 pupils every success in their high school years. High school is a new adventure. You’ll meet new friends, learn new things, and maybe even discover you have a hidden talent for science, sports, or… remembering your locker combination.

There will be challenges, but remember: every great hero faces a few dragons along the way. And if you trip up, just smile, get up, and keep going. After all, even the best of us have walked into the wrong classroom at least once!

And speaking of classrooms, let’s not forget our wonderful teachers. They have taught us so much—like how to solve math problems, how to write essays, and most importantly, how to spot when someone is trying to eat in class. I’m convinced teachers have superpowers—they can hear a sweet wrapper from across the room!

Believe in yourself. You are smart, kind, and ready for this next step. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, try new things, or make mistakes. Mistakes are just proof that you’re trying—and sometimes, they make the best stories to tell your friends.

So go forward with courage and curiosity. Dream big, work hard, and never lose your sense of humour. The future is bright, and it’s yours to shape.

Congratulations, Grade 7 leavers! We are so proud of you, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll do in high school.

Make the most of them and know that you are always welcome here as esteemed alumni.
