We remember
Elvie Archbold (Harch, 1949) 05/03/32 – 30/04/21
Elvie was born in Kingaroy and attended Booie State School for most of her Primary School education. Elvie was a Foundation student, attending St Peters for her Scholarship year in 1945. In the latter part of the 1940’s, when the polio epidemic was raging, Elvie contracted polio. She was treated at Sister Kenny’s polio clinic and recovered reasonably well although she wore a brace on her leg for some time. Elvie’s father decided to send her to St Peters to be confirmed because the petrol rationing during the war, meant it was difficult for her to get to Kingaroy for confirmation lessons. Her uncle from Yarraman was able to attend the confirmation service to represent the family. At 12 years of age, Elvie had to travel home to Kingaroy by train, alone. This meant a walk to the station at Indooroopilly to catch a train filled with soldiers and usually nowhere to sit. Elvie remembers the day peace was declared and the ringing of the bells all over Brisbane to celebrate. Elvie worked as a dental nurse for a practice in Kingaroy. There was no formal training then and she learnt on the job. Elvie married Howard Archbold and they had two sons, Cameron and Rowan. They moved to Wynnum where they lived for the rest of their lives. Elvie is remembered by her family as a quiet, caring person.
